Rare Cine-Nikkor lenses on Nikon 1 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11546/rare-cine-nikkor-lenses-on-nikon-1 Tue, 14 Oct 2014 00:13:24 +0000 eurocameraman 11546@/talks/discussions For video work, i am using my GH series (from 1 to 4) without any hesitation as it delivers what I am looking for. For Photography work, I am using a Nikon D800 to please my clients, as they often print big from the pictures I had done for their website at first. They need high resolution and they always prefer the photographer they hired, handling a big camera. In many people mind, bigger is still more professional. For my personal photography enjoyment, I fall in love with a camera which had never been considered as exciting by usual reviewer: Nikon1 V1. I bought it new for 200 USD or so in 2013. My interest in this camera started after trying a collection of old C-mount lenses with some of them designed for 16mm film camera. Most of those lenses were too tight to cover the M43 sensor (huge vignetting going on) , but they perfectly match with the CX format of the Nikon1. For those who don't know: FX = 2 x M43, FX = 2.7 x CX (in term of cropping factor) Nikon1 V1 sensor (10 millions pixels Alpina) delivers "film like" colors, contrast, noise and sharpness. I know what I am speaking about as I started my career in professional Photography back to 1986.

You can go and visit my webpage blog post and my flickr album to have an idea of the result of combining a Nikon1 V1 camera with this set of lenses:

  • Cine-Nikkor 6.5mm f1.8
  • Cine-Nikkor 13mm f1.8
  • Cine-Nikkor 50mm f1.8
  • Angenieux 25mm f0.95
  • Tamron 25mm f1.6
  • Manual Focus and Manual Exposure (confirmed by Histogram after test shots)

I am planning to shoot a vintage looking short film with this camera soon or later to take benefit of my set of lenses.

16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Tamron lens https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9558/16-300mm-f3.5-6.3-tamron-lens Thu, 06 Feb 2014 05:18:14 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 9558@/talks/discussions

Superior, reliable image quality with a universal lens
The lens construction features 16 elements in 12 groups. This includes three Molded-Glass Aspherical elements, one Hybrid Aspherical element, two LD (Low Dispersion) elements, one XR (Extra Refractive index) glass element, and one element of UXR (Ultra-Extra Refractive Index) glass, which has greater refractive index than XR. The full use of specialized glass elements in the design contributes to thorough compensation of optical aberrations. In addition, the use of the latest coating technology for suppressing reflections on lens element surfaces minimizes unwanted flare and ghosting and assures sharp, crisp, high-contrast images.

image

A further expansion of the imaging range
With a minimum focal length of 16mm (35mm film equivalent: 24.8mm) at the wide-angle end of the zoom range, and a maximum focal length of 300mm (35mm film equivalent: 465mm), this remarkable new lens provides a zoom ratio of approximately 18.8X.

Responding to requests from consumers who wanted to be able to photograph subjects with a wider viewing angle than is possible with conventional high-power zoom lenses, Tamron has begun developing a unique lens with a minimum focal length of 16mm. At the telephoto end, the maximum focal length has been increased to an impressive 300mm. Users of this new lens can enjoy unprecedented framing flexibility by easily adjusting the angle of view using the convenient zoom ring.

Using a new design approach to create an ultra-compact lens

The latest optical technology has been used to provide an expanded zoom range (compared to the B008) at both the wide-angle and telephoto ends, without necessitating the use of an oversized lens body. By employing UXR glass (which helps to reduce the size of the front lens diameter), an optimized layout of the Molded-Glass Aspherical elements, and adopting a 5-lens-group zoom system approach to provide enhanced design flexibility, the new lens embodies the fusion of state-of-the-art optical design, sophisticated mechanical design, and high-precision lens manufacturing technology, thereby attaining a compact size, an unprecedented zoom range, and superior image quality.

A minimum focusing distance of just 0.39 meters supports an extensive range of macro photography capabilities
The new lens provides a minimum focus distance of 0.39 m over the entire zoom range, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9. This makes it possible to get right up close to the subject of the photo to enjoy easy, stress-free macro photography.

PZD (Piezo Drive) delivers faster, quieter autofocus action
The PZD (Piezo Drive), an advanced standing-wave ultrasonic motor system, delivers faster, quieter, more precise AF action when the autofocus is engaged. There is enhanced support for contrast-detection AF capabilities, and focusing when in live-view mode has been made smoother. The new lens also features full-time manual focus, a function that was not provided by B008, making manual focusing more convenient.

Sharper images with VC (Vibration Compensation)
Tamron’s acclaimed VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism is incorporated into the new lens. VC reduces image blur caused by camera shake to deliver significantly sharper images even when shooting handheld at long telephoto settings.

Moisture-resistant construction for worry-free outdoor shooting

I'm buying the Tokina 11mm - 16mm f/2.8 with the Nikon mount to use it with the GH2 and after July with the BMC for the GH2.

Would it be any pros and cons buying the Canon mount EF instead, which will be mount native for the BMC?

Thanks in advance.

Sell it because unfortunately it unexpected vignettes at close focus in combination with different zoom and iris settings on BMMCC sensor and i can't accept this. If focused to infinity - it vignettes closer to 110-120 zoom range and almost don't vignettes at wide angle. If focused to 1.5-3 meters - it vignettes closer to 12-40 zoom range. This lens made for 16 mm cinema. It will fit well to Panasonic GH, Ursa 4.6k, RED, Nikon 1 in 1:1 crop mode or to any camera with small sensor, like Pentax Q or 2/3" CCTV camera. Its heavy (1kg) and needs support, its far from perfect as all zooms are. It has its own character, dreamy with blue-orange abberations at wide open. The lens is sharp starting from T5.6. Front focus ring block was cleaned and greased with HELIMAX-XP grease. Works very smooth. I got this lens from local TV studio sale, seems it was used a lot in far past. Front glass is clear but got a few marks. Rear glass is clear. The iris ring can be easily declicked by loosing a screw. It has a rotating arm attachment for zoom, It is more-less usable but fixation clamp is broken (anyway modern follow focus will work way better for this). There is a 74 to 77 mm front ring adapter installed and additional 77 mm lens cap included.

Also i got additional Kinor-16SX-2 lens to MFT camera mount adapter http://www.rafcamera.com/en/adapters/adapters-for-cine-lenses/kinor-16/adapter-kinor-16sx-2-mft-bayonet , with bayonet lock it works well with other lenses but for some reason the bayonet nut don't screws to this lens so the adaprter must be fixed by grinding 0.1-0.2 mm from inner side of nut. Maybe i'll fix it by myself soon.

Sell it because unfortunately it vignettes on BMMCC sensor and i can't accept this. This lens made for 16 mm cinema. It will fit well to Panasonic GH, Ursa 4.6k, RED, Nikon 1 in 1:1 crop mode or to any camera with small sensor, like Pentax Q or 2/3" CCTV camera. Its wide. its not perfect but has own character. Its slightly soft and dreamy wide open and rather sharp starting from T2.8 and T4. It is a low contrast lens, but you can boost contrast in post easily to match other lenses. It don't have a focus ring. It very sensitive to flange distance changes. I shimmed it to the lens mount adapter with 0.1mm tape so it focus perfect even wide open. The lens is in very nice external shape, glass is clear, maybe few cleaning micro marks in front and some dust specks inside if look too deep with flash-light. I also find that at T11 and 16 i start to see two small dark spots (see the images in dropbox folder). Seems it never was disassembled or serviced. The iris ring is clickless, working very smooth.

The lens I purchase will be for the gh4 and gh2 to be used in a factory setting as well as action sports on a daily basis. I need something wide and fast. Autofocus isn't a deal breaker so the Samyang isn't out just for its lack there of. Autofocus is nice, but if the Samyang is superior enough I can deal without it. I will also use this lens for interviews occasionally. Just looking for a professional opinion for a the best quality all around lens that is wide and fast.

Right now I have the 14-42mm, Samyang 7.5mm and a 50mm f/1.4 Nikon with adapter. Im trying to stick around 300-400$ and willing to buy another adapter, so if there is another lens in this area please bring it up.

Of course, I do film work with my GH2 in anamorphic, and I need to decide how I want to display it in the gallery.

To be honest, I have yet to see a digitally projected image in a gallery setting that I've been pleased with aesthetically, which leads me to the question of this topic . . .

What are my options for transferring my 2.5K ProRes files to film, and how best would I project this in a gallery setting?

I have done some preliminary looking, and transfer services are available. 35mm transfer is more expensive, of course, and I do not know enough about 35mm projectors to know if "home use" projectors even exist. How high of quality is 16mm film? Will it do my GH2 footage justice in terms of resolution? It seems the easier route, as transfers are cheaper and good quality "home use" models are cheap too, even with sound.

I will continue to research and post what I find on this topic for the benefit of others, but I just thought I'd ask some preliminary questions in case there is a P-Ver with more first-hand film experience.

Support a Lovecraftian horror short I've co-written and DPing on 16mm! https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4692/support-a-lovecraftian-horror-short-ive-co-written-and-dping-on-16mm Mon, 24 Sep 2012 09:42:58 +0000 Gabel 4692@/talks/discussions Hello everybody!

I'm posting here to promote my short horror film, called Insane Madness. It's a short film, inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and films like Evil Dead that I've helped co-write. The film plays with human mind, never knowing what's real and what's a dream. It's a period piece, set in the 80s, which we will shoot using time correct techniques in effects (all make up here) and visually. As such, the best way to do it is to shoot it on 16mm, especially as it's soon too late!

So my post here is to essentially spread the word, hoping both to get some donators (if you like the idea) and also hoping for people to share it, to spread the word. We've managed to raise $205 in the first 24 hours, plus we've got over 80 likes on our Facebook page in the same time (including Harold Skinner, gaffer for the majority of Fincher's movies). Hesitations between two lenses to complete my kit https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4383/hesitations-between-two-lenses-to-complete-my-kit Mon, 27 Aug 2012 07:57:10 +0000 krotal 4383@/talks/discussions Hi guys, I know it will sound weird/stupid but I'm trying to decide which lens between Tokina 11-16 and Voigtlander 25 Nokton f.95 will better fit my needs and complete my kit... Theses two pieces of glass are totally different but both have pros that seduce me. I own a nikkor 35 f1.8 and nikkor 40 f2.8 macro. Here why I'm hesitating :

The tokina produces wide shots with a relatively fast aperture, but I'm not sure it will mix well with 35mm (transition between Tokina wide shots and nikkor "close-up" shots will be hard)

The Voigtlander's focal length fits better my actual kit, the super fast aperture gives a dreamy look that I love (I mostly shoot experimental stuffs, fictionnal shorts), this lens seems to be extremely polyvalent, some says it's a workhorse for the GH2. OTOH it's not that wide...

So I'd like to know if you guys think (considering my actual kit) it's better to go for a wide lens or for a more "versatile" lens like the voigtlander.

Thanks in advance
