C-Mount Lenses: How wide can you go before vignetting?
  • Hello, I have a GX85 and wanted to experiment with old film c-mounts. Like the Kern Paillard. It seems like 25mm+ is the safe zone, is that correct? I just don't want too much vignetting. Thanks!

  • @thebmillz I used a 26mm f1.1 on the GH1 and had a little darkening in the corners of the GH1's Multi Aspect Sensor (MAS). I think the were Panasonics don't have a MAS so there's a little more cropping (= less vignetting) then there was on the MAS of the GH1 and GH2 generations.

  • It's actually the image circle of the lens that's creating the vignetting, not the focal length. C-Mount lenses cover a wide range of sensor/film sizes, so you get vignetting if a lens can't cover the entirety of the sensor. I usually search on Youtube to see if anyone else has used the same lens/camera setup as I do before buying it. And here's a list of C-Mount lenses with their image circle sizes: http://www.filmcentre.co.uk/faq_ic.htm Good luck!
