Across all of Alibaba's sales platforms (a group that includes both Alibaba's main website, the consumer-focused Tmall, and others), gross merchandise value (GMV) surpassed last year’s 213.5 billion yuan record (nearly $30.5 billion) on Monday afternoon local time, and kept rising through the rest of the day.
Alibaba kicked off Singles Day 2019 with $1 billion in sales achieved in just one minute and 8 seconds and in less than 30 minutes (29 minutes and 45 seconds) had hit the $10 billion sales mark. That’s about a third of last year’s Singles Day sales of $30.8 billion reached in 30 minutes flat.
