The CompactFlash Association (CFA), the organization responsible for professional removable media specifications such as CompactFlash®, CFast® and XQD®, and the CFexpress® 1.0 specification, now announces the CFexpress® 2.0 specification which expands the spec to include two additional form factors for professional imaging and industrial markets that require performance and quality recording media for high-speed capture and transfer.

CFexpress was created to become a standard that can span many market segments and provide a stable and consistent format to fully leverage the industry’s R&D investments in technology and help reduce churn in the market surrounding standardized and proprietary recording media formats.

CFexpress 2.0 increases the portfolio of PCIe based removable Flash memory cards. The demand for sustained high performance with balanced power and optimized thermal dissipation shall be met with the new next-generation plug and play capability form factors.

With now three form factors, CFexpress® 2.0 supports performance levels to match various market requirements, while maintaining the same electrical/physical interface and memory/storage protocol. All form factors leverage the PCIe® Gen 3 interface for higher performance based on a computing industry storage interface and utilize NVM Express™ 1.3 protocols for fixed length commands, an efficient queuing model, and very low non-cacheable PCIe accesses per command. This enables access to a wide range of open standard platforms consisting of mature and proven drivers, saving development time and effort.

The new form factors are designed to meet specific requirements for applications in various verticals:

  • Imaging – Improved data rates in enthusiast and professional digital single-lens reflex cameras (DSLRs), mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (MILCs), drones and video cameras
  • Compute – Low latency external and removable SSDs
  • Enterprise – Faster and more reliable media to store image files, software features and configuration files for servers and routers

The three form factors – designated as Type A, with 1 lane of PCIe, Type B, with 2 lanes of PCIe, and Type C with 4 lanes of PCIe – support up to a maximum theoretical performance of up to 4000MB/s and offers host vendors design flexibility with a form factor size.

The CFA works closely with its ecosystem of partners to design and implement specifications that make a difference to the industry. The board is pleased to help advance the industry.

Mr. Hiroshi Noda of Canon and the CFA co-chairman of the board said, “As co-chairman of the CompactFlash Association I am pleased to introduce CFexpress* 2.0. The introduction of these three new form factors will support both the current and future needs of professional photographers, videographers and cinematographers and will standardize removable media storage on the established PCIe® and NVM Express® ecosystems.”

“The CFexpress* 2.0 will enable many hardware manufacturers to create next generation higher resolution and multi sensor cameras. I am excited to see what the coming years will bring for the industry,” said Mr. Nobuhiro Fujinawa, of Nikon and co-chairman of the CFA board.

CFA has recently added several new members interested in CFA's next-generation and higher-performance standards. CFA invites host and media companies interested in supporting the new CFA specifications to also join CFA as members. Membership enables participation in CFA work groups and access to draft specifications before they are approved and available for purchase by non-members. The new CFexpress* 2.0 is available for members only.

The CFA is also preparing two further specifications. VPG Profile 4 Specification will be released shortly to enable the promise of higher sustained video performance. In addition, the CFA plans to start specifications utilizing PCIe Gen4 in order to realize even higher speed memory cards.

Samsung Electronics announced that it has begun mass producing the industry’s first one-terabyte (TB) embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) 2.1, for use in next-generation mobile applications. Just four years after introducing the first UFS solution, the 128-gigabyte (GB) eUFS, Samsung has passed the much-anticipated terabyte threshold in smartphone storage. Smartphone enthusiasts will soon be able to enjoy storage capacity comparable to a premium notebook PC, without having to pair their phones with additional memory cards.

image

“The 1TB eUFS is expected to play a critical role in bringing a more notebook-like user experience to the next generation of mobile devices,” said Cheol Choi, executive vice president of Memory Sales & Marketing at Samsung Electronics. “What’s more, Samsung is committed to assuring the most reliable supply chain and adequate production quantities to support the timely launches of upcoming flagship smartphones in accelerating growth of the global mobile market.”

Within the same package size (11.5mm x 13.0mm), the 1TB eUFS solution doubles the capacity of the previous 512GB version by combining 16 stacked layers of Samsung’s most advanced 512-gigabit (Gb) V-NAND flash memory and a newly developed proprietary controller. Smartphone users will now be able to store 260 10-minute videos in 4K UHD (3840×2160) format, whereas the 64GB eUFS widely used in many current high-end smartphones is capable of storing 13 videos of the same size.

The 1TB eUFS also possesses exceptional speed, allowing users to transfer large amounts of multimedia content in significantly reduced time. At up to 1,000 megabytes per second (MB/s), the new eUFS features approximately twice the sequential read speed of a typical 2.5-inch SATA solid state drive (SSD). This means that 5GB-sized full HD videos can be offloaded to an NVMe SSD in as fast as five seconds, which is 10 times the speed of a typical microSD card. Furthermore, the random read speed has increased by up to 38 percent over the 512GB version, clocking in at up to 58,000 IOPS. Random writes are 500 times faster than a high-performance microSD card (100 IOPS), coming in at up to 50,000 IOPS. The random speeds allow for high-speed continuous shooting at 960 frames per second and will enable smartphone users to take full advantage of the multi-camera capabilities in today and tomorrow’s flagship models.

Samsung plans to expand the production of its fifth-generation 512Gb V-NAND at its Pyeongtaek plant in Korea throughout the first half of 2019 to fully address the anticipated strong demand for the 1TB eUFS from mobile device manufacturers around the world.

Failed drive? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21238/failed-drive Tue, 01 Jan 2019 17:21:49 +0000 EspenB 21238@/talks/discussions I have a Core 2 8200 @ 2,33 GHz CPU which have only been used sporadically to read mail since I upgraded to another PC 4 years ago.

But while it still works, its agonisingly slow every time it accesses the hard drive. 1 TB WD Green (WD10EACS-65D6B0)

It takes forever to load a prg or video file for playback.

I finally fired up WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics prog and started a quick scan. Which was supposed to go for 2 min, but after 15 min it was still lingering around 80 per cent completion only. SMART status is ok.

The drive is probably toast?

I fired up the EXTENDED TEST to run during the night.

Lacie DJI Copilot Backup Storage System https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/20934/lacie-dji-copilot-backup-storage-system Wed, 21 Nov 2018 06:21:43 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 20934@/talks/discussions

Seagate Technology plc (NASDAQ: STX), a world leader in data storage solutions, today announced a range of new products at the CES 2018 conference designed to equip the world’s increasingly mobile population with solutions that solve key challenges they face when creating, processing and accessing their data on-the-go.

“Our world is becoming more data-centric, connected and mobile. This means creating, transferring, storing and accessing data quickly and reliably is critical to unlocking the potential of everything – from data created in the field, to data powering self-driving cars, AI personal assistants or virtual and mixed reality experiences,” said Tim Bucher, senior vice president of Seagate consumer solutions. “At Seagate, we’re constantly pursuing innovative ways to address our customer needs so they can gain a competitive edge in whichever field they play.”

For example, videographers who want to capture footage in the field can now streamline their on-set workflow thanks to the second product offering from Seagate’s strategic partnership with DJI, the world’s leading manufacturer of unmanned aerial vehicles, which looks to advance data solutions for the UAV ecosystem. The new LaCie® DJI Copilot, with design by Neil Poulton, is a complete backup on-set solution – enabling drone users to quickly ingest and review their content in full resolution without a PC. This changes the game by allowing creative professionals and consumers to playback, copy and manage their drone footage from their mobile device without the hassle of leaving the field or booting up a computer. Users can quickly connect and reference the built-in screen to initiate direct file transfer from an SD card to LaCie DJI Copilot – without the need of a laptop or a mobile network. The Copilot BOSS (Back-up On-Set Solution) app by LaCie allows users to playback video in full resolution as well as manage and organize files with their mobile phone or tablet, and a built-in power bank recharges your mobile devices. With 2000GB (2TB) of storage, the LaCie DJI Copilot enables users to easily store up to 65 hours of 4K 30fps video footage and 20K+ RAW photos. The LaCie DJI Copilot’s street price in the U.S. will be $349 and will be shipping in the spring.

Another challenge facing many mobile users today is extending the storage and battery life of their smartphones so they can capture, access and view content for longer periods of time. For consumers in China and Indonesia – two countries with some of the highest concentrations of smartphones on the planet – owners of Android mobile devices can significantly extend the battery life and capacity of their smartphone or tablet with the new Seagate® Joy Drive. Whether consumers are on their morning commute or just out with friends, the Seagate Joy Drive enables them to access videos and other content anywhere, without the need for a WiFi connection or cellular service. Available first in China this March through an exclusive partnership with JingDong, one of China’s largest online retailers, the Seagate Joy Drive is available in 1000GB (1TB) capacity and has a street price in China of 660 CNY ($99). Seagate is also evaluating potential future markets and partners for this product.

In the meantime, on-the-go consumers worldwide can keep their files and lives in motion with the new Seagate® Fast SSD – an ultra-portable flash drive that teams fast performance of up to 540MB/s transfer rates, with shock-resistance and USB-C connectivity. Users can backup or sync their content using Seagate’s new Toolkit software. The Seagate Fast SSD is available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities and has a street price in the U.S. of $99, $169 and $349, respectively and will be shipping in the spring.

Data security is one more growing concern for anyone using a mobile device. To address this challenge, Seagate is introducing the latest addition to its popular line of LaCie Rugged drives: the LaCie Rugged® Secure. Built to withstand all-terrain extreme conditions from photo shoots in sub-zero temperatures to repeated drops on hard studio floors, the Rugged Secure, with design by Neil Poulton, is the first Rugged drive to include hardware encryption using Seagate Secure™ technology. This new drive gives creative professionals and other users peace of mind that they can control access to their content. A simple disconnection of Rugged Secure from a computer will automatically lock the drive and access to the data stored and will remain password-protected via new Toolkit software. The LaCie Rugged Secure street price in the U.S. will be $139 for 2TB and will be shipping in the spring.

And for creative professionals and enthusiasts looking to try out the latest graphic design and video editing software from Adobe Systems, an expanded partnership between Adobe and Seagate now provides limited-time, no-cost access to Adobe’s latest applications bundled with popular Seagate and LaCie drives. Two new offerings available immediately include two complimentary months of the “Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan” (worth $19.98) – which features the new cloud-based photo service, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC – across the full range of Seagate Backup Plus and LaCie Porsche Design devices, as well as packaging one complimentary month of the “Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps plan” (worth $74.99) – which features Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Illustrator CC and much more – with all LaCie Rugged, LaCie d2 and LaCie big devices.

For more details, come ‘get your game on’ during CES 2018 in the Seagate Experience Zone at The Venetian. There you’ll find interactive product demos and live experiences that showcase how the latest Seagate and partner technologies are teaming up to unlock the potential of creative workflows, smart home technologies, gaming, edge computing and more. We’ll also be joined at CES by our partners including Adobe, Blackmagic, CyArk, DJI, Grab Games, ioSafe and Synology. Anker USB 3.0 Card Reader review https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/20652/anker-usb-3.0-card-reader-review Thu, 11 Oct 2018 17:43:20 +0000 DrDave 20652@/talks/discussions I bought one of these because Vitaliy posted a discount code. I instantly regretted it since I have at least seven or eight card readers, but what the hey, in for a penny, as they say.
In many respects, it looks like the ubiquitous Transcend model and costs about the same. One annoying feature is that the label is on the wrong side, so when you load a card you face the label the other way. No biggie.
Compared to the Transcend, the Anker is a tiny bit faster in transfer speeds, but only by a few percent. The Transcend is smaller, thinner, lighter and has a better fit. The Anker will also copy from a regular sized SD to a micro SD. So, not a speed demon but perfectly fine. I slightly prefer the Transcend but they are very similar.
Note that if you are a heavy SD card user, heat is an issue. I use the Transcend because it runs fairly cool; these cards can get really hot if you are offloading hours of footage.
Avoid the Lexar style or any design that covers up the whole card: the card needs air to stay cool. It's a bit snug. I mention this because there is always a small risk if you have a tight connector that you can damage something.

Delkin premium fast XQD memory cards https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/20255/delkin-premium-fast-xqd-memory-cards Sat, 18 Aug 2018 02:05:10 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 20255@/talks/discussions image

Delkin Devices, a manufacturer of flash storage solutions and camera accessories, announced today the newest addition to their ever-growing line of memory-based products: Premium 2933X XQD memory cards. Version 2.0 compliant with speeds suitable for professional photographers and videographers, Delkin XQD cards are specifically designed to excel in the latest generation of cinematic hosts from both Sony & Nikon. As not all memory manufacturers are authorized to produce and sell XQD, Delkin is grateful for the opportunity to provide consumers another choice.

Utilizing a 2nd generation PCI Express interface and delivering blazing-fast write speeds up to 400MB/s (up to 440MB/s read speeds), Delkin Premium XQD memory cards are capable of capturing flawless cinema-quality footage, including DCI 4K & Full HD video at 180 fps, as well as RAW photos in burst mode. Each card has undergone extensive testing to ensure compatibility in today's high-end XQD hosts, including the Nikon D5, D500 & D850, as well as several of Sony's XDCAM Super 35 broadcast camcorders (PXW-FS7 & PXW-FS7M2). It is important to note though that XQD cards are not backwards compatible with either CompactFlash or CFast 2.0 hosts.

As proof that Delkin's XQD cards are built to the highest standard and full compatibility, each card is serialized, like your camera. This allows Delkin to offer the ultimate level of customer support, while providing customers additional protection and insurance for their purchase. Owners can register their Delkin Premium XQD cards at www.delkindevices.com/xqd/.

In addition to their "Lifetime Warranty" policy, Delkin also offers a unique built-in insurance policy for their XQD memory cards, called their "48 Hour, No-Questions-Asked Replacement Guarantee". Not offered anywhere else in the world, Delkin will replace any non-working XQD card within 48 hours or less (not including weekends), prior to receiving your non-working card. Cards can also be replaced over-the-counter at any authorized Delkin XQD reseller.

"This covers the unthinkable, from salt exposure to even pet and child inflicted damage" Jenn Sherry, Delkin's Marketing Manager explains, "Should anything happen, just give us a call and we'll send you a brand new replacement card that you'll receive in less than 48 hours, along with a pre-paid shipping envelope to get your damaged card back to us."

Delkin's "48HR Replacement Guarantee" is also offered on all Premium memory card lines, including BLACK (SD, microSD & CF), PRIME & POWER (SD & microSD), as well as CFast 2.0.

Delkin Premium XQD memory cards come in the following capacities and will start shipping mid/late October: 64GB, 120GB and 240GB. XQD cards will be made available for purchase to Promaster members exclusively through the PRO warehouse. Delkin products are sold through authorized camera stores worldwide. FuzeDrive - Ryzen friendly soft for DRAM, SSD or Optane cache https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/19701/fuzedrive-ryzen-friendly-soft-for-dram-ssd-or-optane-cache- Sun, 13 May 2018 13:57:25 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 19701@/talks/discussions

FuzeDrive for AMD is Real-time Tiering software with Machine Intelligence. It blends 2 different classes of storage media (fast and capacity) into a single volume that appears to the operating system as the C: drive. Active data is automatically moved to your fast storage media and stored there and your inactive data is kept on the capacity storage. Your storage activity is dynamically monitored and learns how you use your system. The result is you get the performance benefits of your fast storage and the combined capacity of both the fast and capacity drives. Since it is fully automated, you do not need to worry about manually moving data between 2 drives.

image

Unique is that you can also use Intel Optane as your tier drive, and all on AMD system.

Machine Intelligence

Combines your fast and slow storage drives as a single C: drive. Learns how you use your computer and adapts automatically to make sure performance is optimized.  Automatically moves frequently used data to the fast SSD tier and less frequently used data to the capacity tier.

Flash Performance

Your applications are served up from your fast storage media resulting in fast boot times, accelerated game loading and applications. Dynamic data movement means you no longer have to manually manage what drive to store you data on.

Large Capacity

Create virtual SSDs - vSSD - from 1TB-10TB in size with SSD performance.  Yes, you can have SSD performance and capacity too!

Flexibility

FuzeDrive for AMD allows you to mix any two storage media drives into a single vSSD with a performance tier and capacity tier.  Mix SSD with hard drives, or NVMe with SSD, or Optane with SSD or HDD.  You get the picture.

Meet Panasonic GH6 SD card interface - 985MB/sec SD Express https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/19972/meet-panasonic-gh6-sd-card-interface-985mbsec-sd-express Wed, 27 Jun 2018 05:48:40 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 19972@/talks/discussions

PR

The SD Association announced today SD Express which adds the popular PCI Express® and NVMe™ interfaces to the legacy SD interface. The PCIe interface delivering a 985 megabytes per second (MB/s) maximum data transfer rate and the NVMe upper layer protocol enables advanced memory access mechanism, enabling a new world of opportunities for the popular SD memory card. In addition, the maximum storage capacity in SD memory cards grows from 2TB with SDXC to 128 TB with the new SD Ultra Capacity (SDUC) card. These innovations maintain the SDA’s commitment to backward compatibility and are part of the new SD 7.0 specification.

“SD Express’ use of popular PCIe and NVMe interfaces to deliver faster transfer speeds is a savvy choice since both protocols are widely used in the industry today and creates a compelling choice for devices of all types,” said Mats Larsson, Senior Market Analyst at Futuresource. “The SD Association has a robust ecosystem with a strong history of integrating SD innovations and has earned the trust of consumers around the world.”

SD Express keeps pace with growing performance levels of mobile and client computing, imaging and automotive as they adopt faster communication and embedded storage protocols designed to make processing data faster.

“With SD Express we’re offering an entirely new level of memory card with faster protocols turning cards into a removable SSD,” said Hiroyuki Sakamoto, SDA president. “SD 7.0 delivers revolutionary innovations to anticipate the needs of forthcoming devices and content rich and speed hungry applications.”

“PCI-SIG is pleased to have teamed with the SDA to collaborate on this innovation for the world’s leading removable memory card – SD,” said Al Yanes, PCI-SIG president and chairman. “PCIe specification conformance tests are available today by major test vendors, offering a significant advantage for any new PCIe adopter.”

SD Express delivers speeds necessary to move large amounts of data generated by data-intense wireless communication, super-slow motion video, RAW continuous burst mode and 8K video capture and playback, 360 degree cameras/videos, speed hungry applications running on cards and mobile computing devices, ever evolving gaming systems, multi-channel IoT devices and automotive to name a few. SD Express will be initially offered on SDUC, SDXC and SDHC memory cards.

“NVMe is the industry-recognized performance SSD interface from the client to the datacenter, shipping in millions of units,” said Amber Huffman, NVM Express™ Inc. president. “Consumers will benefit by SD Association adopting the NVMe specification for their new SD Express cards.”

SD Express uses the well-known PCIe 3.0 specification and NVMe v1.3 protocols defined by PCI-SIG® and NVM Express, respectively, on the second row of pins used by UHS-II cards today. By relying on successful protocols already in the marketplace, the SDA gives the industry an advantage allowing utilization of existing test equipment and saving in development process by usage of existing building blocks used in existing designs. These cards also provide system developers new options offered by PCIe and NVMe capabilities, such as Bus Mastering, Multi Queue (without locking mechanism) and Host Memory Buffer. A new video explains more about SD Express.

The SDA released visual marks to denote SD Express and SDUC memory cards for easy matching with devices’ recommendation for the best SD memory card for optimal performance.

A new white paper, “SD Express Cards with PCIe and NVMe Interfaces,” provides more details on the new capabilities and features found in the SD 7.0 specification. More information is available on our website.
