BMC388 is made mostly for Black Magic cameras. Difference with previous models is that it has balanced outputs.

Otherwise it is same 3 XLR inputs, support for phantom power, not really good (as it is few only) leds used for levels.

And quite big $429 price (something about $300-350 margin here I guess).

What shotgun microphone are being used directly plugged into this camera beside the standard ones like sennheiser mke 400, Rode Video mic, Panasonic DMW-MS2E etc.? DR100mk2 vs RM222 etc. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8154/dr100mk2-vs-rm222-etc. Thu, 19 Sep 2013 02:17:40 +0000 wgtwo 8154@/talks/discussions Looking into upgrading my audio kit to accompany my GH3, and have a couple of questions that Google can't really help me with.

How favourably does the sound quality (namely noise floor) on the DR100mk2 compare to the RM222 and other DSLR preamps? I know the JuicedLink guy did a video on this, but I don't really trust that - the presentation was horribly preachy and it really did feel like he was trying to sell his product more than anything else.

How viable is the use of the DR100 as a preamp/mixer via the use of its 3.5mm line out port? This is, of course, not the only thing I am buying it for; it's just that it seems a lot more flexible than the single purpose RM222.

Any other suggestions are also, of course, welcome. Thanks!

High quality affordable audio... computer audio interface. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/683/high-quality-affordable-audio...-computer-audio-interface.- Tue, 16 Aug 2011 12:36:01 +0000 danyyyel 683@/talks/discussions
So back to your subject. Looking around I can't find any quality audio recorder below $ 500. I have seen the hype on the zoom H4n and Tascam dr100 but only from non sound guys. Any people with some sound experience will tell you about the low quality preamps, adequate for music but bad for dialogues. Now if you open your eyes toward the music/sound recording field, there is the computer audio interface world where you can get some very good hardware for around $ 200. You have for example the Mackie Onyx Blackjack. For $ 149 you have two super quality preamps. You just need to type Mackie Blackjack reviews on google to get the universal praise of the quality of this little device.

http://www.gearwire.com/mackie-blackjack-proreview.html
http://www.harmonycentral.com/docs/DOC-1621
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec10/articles/mackie-onyx-blackjack.htm
http://www.musicradar.com/gear/all/computers-software/peripherals/input-devices/audio-interfaces/onyx-blackjack-289526/review
http://www.proaudiostar.com/in-dev-review-mackie-blackjack-interface

Now you will have to couple it with a laptop and not a run and gun solution. But for $ 149 at this quality level, it make you really think for the kind of shooter than I am, that is more planned and narrative work. It don't know if anyone has any experience or thoughts on the subject to share if it is a good solution or not. In a ideal world Mackie would take this device, add a screen, battery and SD recorder and sell it for $ 400.]]>

Zoom H1 vs Rode Videomic https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2095/zoom-h1-vs-rode-videomic Mon, 23 Jan 2012 18:59:33 +0000 sprinke 2095@/talks/discussions I'm just learning about this stuff, so be gentle with me, please.

Thinking about improving audio with my GH2. Originally I thought that for low-budget, okay, cheap (just a hobby for me), that the Rode Videomic would be a nice option.

Then I start reading here about audio recorders, and take a look at the Zoom H1. Seems pretty neat, and cheaper than the Videomic!

Now I wonder, why would anyone choose the Videomic over the H1, for a budget option? If I understand things correctly, the H1 offers more capability. You could mount it on the camera and run line-in to camera AND have headphone monitoring (with a splitter), or you could take it off the camera altogether for interviews, or attach a separate mic to it like a lav mic. Am I correct? Am I missing something?

This happens one of two ways;

  1. via an infra-red trigger, which currently i beleive only works with the 5dmk ii, or
  2. through a wire from the Fostex to the remote port on the camera.

K-tek Nautilus https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7557/k-tek-nautilus Thu, 18 Jul 2013 16:16:32 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 7557@/talks/discussions

The Nautilus has successfully achieved three dimensional isolation due to the fact that the microphone is suspended in the center of the mounting ring, allowing it to move in any direction no matter which way the microphone is oriented. This is critical when using microphones like the Schoeps modular series of microphones with a GVC swivel.

Since The Nautilus is so simple in its design, that means parts are easily replaceable. All the parts are made from extremely tough, high quality, proprietary materials. But, should something break or fail it is easy to replace any of the parts quickly and cheaply.

2.5mm Angled Stereo Plug DIY for the GH2 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4846/2.5mm-angled-stereo-plug-diy-for-the-gh2 Tue, 09 Oct 2012 11:48:47 +0000 gameb 4846@/talks/discussions I could never find a 2.5mm angled stereo plug. The only other alternative to the regular straight plug which stick out of the camera and could potentially snap while inside the camera, is the 3.5/2.5 angled adapter. I found these adapters to be quite dangerous because they sometimes can loose contact and therefore are not very reliable. So I assembled my own version which works perfectly.

These two plugs are quiet standard i've seen them in shops and on ebay, easy to find and cheap. Make sure that the "golden" plug fits strongly into the GH2 plug to make a reliable contact. image

Take the interior part of the golden plug and the exterior part of the silver plug, bend the interior of the golden plug or just cut it off so it fits the the shape of the silver plug. image

Fit the golden interior part into the exterior silver part of the plug, so that the little "minidisc" (red arrow) of the golden plug is outside, if not it doesn't make contact. Sorry - I just realized that the exterior angled silver plug has a plastic inside whith which you fix the cable. I forgot to put it into the photo. But obviously that helps a lot the stability of the plug. image

Done! image

Small high quality audio recorder https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7117/small-high-quality-audio-recorder Fri, 31 May 2013 10:24:34 +0000 ade4all 7117@/talks/discussions Hi - am looking for a smallish audio recorder to use as a bit bucket using line in from SD mix pre-d. I would also like to use it connected to my Rode lav mic, sometimes as a poor mans radio mic ( i know I wont be able to monitor sound this way but when I'm filming on my own this can be really handy) I've been using Zoom h1 for this - have been reasonably happy with the results connected to the mix pre-d using its version of 'line' in - but using the zoom and rode lav has given me quite noisey hissy audio.

Is there a decent recorder out there that can handle true line in from the mix pre and has a low enough noise floor to create hiss free recordings when tethered to the Rode lav and can easily fit into someones pocket?

The Sony PCM-M10 has fairly good reviews and is my top choice at the moment, just wondered if there was something same size or possibly slightly smaller that has similar audio quality ? it would need to be a decent step up in quality from the Zoom h1

Any help would be gratefully received.....

Low frequency sound recording (on set)? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6876/low-frequency-sound-recording-on-set Fri, 03 May 2013 08:47:59 +0000 Psyco 6876@/talks/discussions Hi, I have a question for our sound-guys ;-)

I have 2 MXL FR-300 mics and a Marantz PMD 661 recorder, which is a nice combo for general audio recording (voice, sound on set, ambient,..). But the MXL mics have a frequency spectrum of only 50Hz-18kHz and there is some sound below 50 Hz. Especially the things you "feel" in a cinema are in the 20-30 Hz range.

How is that part recorded or is it all done in post? And would you recommend an additional mic like http://www.mxlmics.com/microphones/live/Cube for on set recording?

My budget is around £300 and I don't mind syncing sound separately in post. I've been looking at the NTG2 + Zoom/Tascam products but I see there's a lot of issues with pre-amps. I want a shotgun mic as I can just mount it on top of the camera and have the recorder attach to the shoulder rig or in my pocket. I should note I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to sound, I've made the mistake of diving straight in and buying a Zoom H1 after reading the hype and not doing my own proper research. This time around I want to do it properly. I'm happy with the NTG2 but I'm having a hard time trying to find a field recorder to go with it that won't cause me any issues.

4 batteries 1.2v or 4.8v should be the best solution, I took what I had on hand is just to try, this is not the final cut. it is a lower cost solution that works very well, and although cheaper than a mixer,   to make its "mobile first" first truly mobile thanks card has a battery via the USB socket.

I did not even try to connect the mobile pre mk2 on my gh2, because I do not know exactly the reliability and sensitivity of the input level jack2.5mm. But the microphone prodipe st1 out very well in the headphone sound card and line output

This system must work with other external sound card usb
