Sony https://personal-view.com/talks/categories/sony-cameras/p5/feed.rss Tue, 21 May 24 05:08:16 +0000 Sony en-CA Shootout between Sony A65 vs GH2 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1789/shootout-between-sony-a65-vs-gh2 Mon, 19 Dec 2011 19:53:36 +0000 EOSHD 1789@/talks/discussions
Essentially the Sony A65 is the same for image quality in video mode as the NEX 7 and A77. It has a superior sensor to the GH2 but doesn't do a very good job scaling and codec wise - so the GH2 resolves a cleaner looking image with more detail and less aliasing and moire.

However where I feel the A65 wins is...

- CHEAP!! £699 in the UK compared to £1300 for the A77, but same great OLED viewfinder, same sensor, same image processor, 95% of the same features but a plastic body
- Internal stabilisation - Your cheap £50 300mm Minolta becomes as good as an OIS Canon lens. Your £100 fast 50mm F1.8 gets stabilisation for free. Not bad!!
- Handling. I prefer the bigger body to the NEX 5N really
- 1080/50p and 25p in PAL land
- MF peaking, great EVF and 920k LCD

I am also going to be testing a Nikon J1 soon. I feel this is prime for a good hacking Sir @Vitaliy_Kiselev. The sensor may be on the small side but Expeed 3 does a great job of scaling the image... nice clean, sharp resolution and a pretty fast LSI considering the price point. Maybe if the firmware is not encrypted it could be your next conquest :) If you want a body say so and I will whip round for donations on EOSHD for a J1 body to be sent.]]>

New Sony camera with z-axis moving sensor? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7988/new-sony-camera-with-z-axis-moving-sensor Tue, 03 Sep 2013 03:09:42 +0000 LongJohnSilver 7988@/talks/discussions I was reading this rumors on several sites. They say that the upcoming A7000 (a fake picture was posted days ago) incorporates the Contax AX AF.

The sensor is mount on a tray that slide in Z direction. It allows approximately 18mm of focus adjustment. As actuator you have strong piezoelectric servo, this make for rapid movement back-forth if selected that option.

Is this really a viable solution for universal lens adapter and image stabilization?

The main source is alpharumors: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-there-is-a-sony-camera-to-come-also-for-nikon-and-canon-lens-owners/

A second body: NEX-3N or NEX-5N? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6593/a-second-body-nex-3n-or-nex-5n Wed, 03 Apr 2013 21:39:57 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 6593@/talks/discussions I think buy a second body basically for photo still and leaving the GH2 basically for video.

I have reached the conclusion that the ideal would be one of these two options because arent so expensive. With less than $400 I can get one of these bodies even be used. I cant buy a NEX-7, NEX-6, E-M5 or E-PL5. Sony has a magnificent sensor, is excellent for photo still, plus I can use my old glasses, I think the Zuiko 50mm f1.8 or Asahi SMC 50mm f2 is one luxury with NEX to photograph street, rather than the GH2 as photo still.

And although the opportunity for ask which of the two NEX is better for video ?, Isnt the for video, but if I use one as a second camera in any circumstance or for any determinated shot, and I like the idea of have two different systems to experience both worlds.

Thanks advanded

SONY DRO in Movie Mode - Drawbacks? How it is done? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5797/sony-dro-in-movie-mode-drawbacks-how-it-is-done Wed, 16 Jan 2013 11:15:45 +0000 richg101 5797@/talks/discussions Hey Guys.

This forum seems to be full of technical minded people, I'll post my query here.

I am interested in the DRO mode which applies processing to both still images and during video mode within Sony Alpha/ Nex cameras. From tests it seems to lower the contrast of the captured data meaning sky is less beached out and darker areas are more exposed. The result is a flatter profile (even flatter than setting your picture profile to flat -3-3-3).

The camera has 6 DRO modes from 'off' to 'level 1' through to 'level 5'. meaning you can adjust the amount of processing / exposure swing the camera applies to the captured footage.

Does anyone actually know how this process is working? Is the camera changing the ISO of different parts of the sensor in order to lower sensitivity in the brighter areas of the frame, and raising the iso to get better exposure in the darker areas? In still photography mode the resultant image when looked at in playback mode is brighter than it looked when you actually take the image, but the change is clearly visible in realtime while recording which would suggest to me that there is not a post processing type process going on during movie recording mode. - what you see on the monitor during recording is the same as what you see when you play it back.

Could it be that it is the camera ramping or lowering ISO depending on the brightness of the details in the frame or is it more likely to be similar to the processing a picture profile would be imparting on the picture?

I want to get some theories so I can start to look at ways to make best use of this process. EOSHD sstate that DRO adds a lot of noise/colour artifacts to the picture in movie mode, but could this be that if the camera were set to iso 800, the DRO might be ramping things right up to 3200iso in the darker areas? If i set the camera to iso100, it will mean the DRO wont ramp to as high ISO (assuming the DRO is playing with ISO.

Some clips about the process:-

I think this feature is yet to be properly understood and up until recently i thought it were just a feature available in still mode. If it is applying at sensor ISO level this could be something Sony havn't thought to advertise as a benefit to using their consumer grade products like NEX5n within indi film making.

Thoughts???

Anyone ever considered a Sony NEX-5N Hack?! https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1977/anyone-ever-considered-a-sony-nex-5n-hack Tue, 10 Jan 2012 09:01:56 +0000 Jonesy91 1977@/talks/discussions I'm a long time GH1/GH2 hacked user. I viewed the Christmas Shootout videos from Phillip Bloom, and I realized that the DSLR with the most cinematic potential aside from the GH2 is the NEX 5N. If someone could hack the NEX 5N to a higher bitrate, it could probably gain all the advantages of the GH2, while keeping or improving what it already does better. A list for perspective:

GH2 (Hacked): -Better Resolution -Higher ISO values -More native lenses -External Mic Jack -Swivel out LCD

NEX5N: -Better Low light Capability -Sensor has better crop factor -60p!( better Full HD slow motion potential) -Flatter Pictures Profiles

...and I sure I'm missing something for both, but it would be helpful if anyone could add anything else they know. I don't know which one has better AF/AF tracking for its lenses. Just thought that the Sony NEX 5N may, if hacked, have everything we have in the GH2, and more (of course with no mic jack). SOMEONE PLEASE HACK THE SONY NEX 5N, PLEASE!!!!

Moire and Aliasing: will Sony learn from Canon? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4789/moire-and-aliasing-will-sony-learn-from-canon Tue, 02 Oct 2012 05:50:11 +0000 apefos 4789@/talks/discussions Canon 5D Mark III did an intelligent sensor design 22.3Mp using 5760x3240 pixels for video. This is 3x1920 x 3x1080 so the moire and aliasing is corrected because camera takes one pixel from each 9 pixels group. Sony release the VG900 with 24Mp and VG900 videos shows moire and aliasing... So will Sony changes 24Mp to 22.3Mp in a near future? Can we expect something better in a future version of this camera?

Both models cannot allow full manual controls in video (you can't set ISO), however videos on vimeo looks pretty good. Of course nex camera and gf1/2 have different sensor , crop factor etc...so a comparison is not "fair", however I would be curious to know what (little) camera you can suggest for video quality: gf2/1 or sony nex 3-5?

Anyone switched to the NEX-7? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2476/anyone-switched-to-the-nex-7 Sat, 03 Mar 2012 16:00:35 +0000 Shield 2476@/talks/discussions I have, for a few reasons. First of all I will easily admit the GH2 video is sharper and more detailed with less moire; even the unhacked GH2. But, I like the Sony colors better, the size of the NEX-7, the ability to get autofocus with the LA-EA2 adapter + Sony Alpha lenses, this combination gives me phase detection autofocus which is pretty cool. Also, I love the 60p for slowing it down to 24p and not having to use Twixtor.

But don't sell your GH2's just yet - even with the Sony Zeiss 24mm F/1.8 I'm not getting the pleasing bokeh like I did with the Panasonic Summilux F/1.4. But the pictures are far, far better.

So in my humble opinion, the GH2 is a 9/10 for video and 6/10 for stills. The NEX-7 is 7/10 video and 9/10 stills.

If anyone cares.

Sony Introduces Alpha 57 Digital SLR with 1080/60p Video https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2640/sony-introduces-alpha-57-digital-slr-with-108060p-video Tue, 20 Mar 2012 23:45:46 +0000 disneytoy 2640@/talks/discussions Their new mirrorless HDSLR around $700 has 1080/60p. AVCHD 2.0. So this is the first time we see 1080/60p on this class of camera. It will be interesting to see what Canon does with their lower level cameras like the T3i which I think is competitive with the Sony 57. Also, my hopes, that Panasonic can come to the table with 1080/60p in the upcoming GH-3.

GH2 vs Sony NEX 5N https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/842/gh2-vs-sony-nex-5n Sat, 03 Sep 2011 07:23:11 +0000 EOSHD 842@/talks/discussions
It's good and nice to have an APS-C sensor in a mirrorless body with full manual video controls. Powerful new image processor, crying out to be hacked :)

But GH2 clearly wins on resolution and the cleanness of the image with less aliasing.

If you want a larger sensor and 1080/60p the 5N is a pretty good choice though!]]>

Body only, and it's at $1825 already. Geesh people.

Here's some raw video footage. I see LOTS of moire in the daylight shots.
