OpenToonz: Animation Production Software https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15076/opentoonz-animation-production-software Sat, 14 May 2016 17:30:43 +0000 tida 15076@/talks/discussions OpenToonz is based on the software "Toonz", which was developed by Digital Video S.p.A. in Italy, customized by Studio Ghibli, and has been used for creating its works for many years. Dwango launches this OpenToonz project, in cooperation with Digital Video and Studio Ghibli.

https://opentoonz.github.io/e/

Since the software "Toonz", which is the original version of OpenToonz, was first used for some cuts of Princess Mononoke, it has been used in the ink and paint, color design and digital composition process of almost all of works of Studio Ghibli. After "Arrietty/The Secret World of Arrietty", it was customized inside the company, and evolved to become more usable according to its production style.

AfterShot Pro by Corel https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8065/aftershot-pro-by-corel Tue, 10 Sep 2013 16:28:27 +0000 Tesselator 8065@/talks/discussions I just got this only a yesterday but I've found that's about the same as a few weeks for the less app-aggressive users out there. :p Man, have you guys used this yet? Drop the poorly-written slow-as-molasses LightRoom and put aside CaptureOne for awhile and give this a try!

It's available for Windows, Mac, and Linux so you're afforded a bit of platform freedom with it. There's a trial version available on the home site here.

The Corel site starts off the introductory blurb with "Corel® AfterShot™ Pro is a fast..." and as these kinds of blurbs typically go they're drastically understating the case. Running AfterShot Pro on my ancient 2006 MacPro1,1 (w/32GB RAM, and 8-cores of x5355 Xeon at 2.67GHz & GTX570) acts much faster than LR on my liquid-cooled 16-core 4+ GHz Boxx 8980 XTREME with dual Tesla cards and 32GB RAM!

All the usual raw processing tools plus some unexpected goodies are presented in a pretty slick highly customizable, gooey (GUI):

It's of course all non-destructive. The last 4 or 5 revision releases have offered OpenCL support as you can see from the image above. Totally sweet! It has layer masks for selective editing and processing. Layer brushing can be as accurate as 2 pixels and selection areas are sub-pixel accurate. It has options for independent layers which allow opacity and unique selection spline sets and/or brush strokes per layer. The selection splines can be edited at any time during editing or after saving the files out. I guess the spline data is saved in either of it's two kinds of XMP sidecar files. It sports a plug-in architecture but I haven't looked yet to see what APIs it's using nor if the plugs are compatible with those from/for other apps. Mine came with a souped up version of NoiseNinja and B&W processor with selective color capabilities.

It supports catalogs which I personally dislike, and also OS hierarchal folder structures of your own devise - which is what I prefer. It uses just two user definable folders for all of its cache, work, proofs, previews, and profiles so it won't make a mess of things either. The review-and-select tools are similar to all other good PP apps I've tried so finding, sorting, and tagging stuff is done in the usual ways. Basically if you already know LR, CP1, or Aperture, there's no learning curve to deal with - just a HUGE speed increase and who doesn't want that? :D It has some nice output features but nothing others don't have IIRC. PDF files, Proof (Contact) Sheets, and so on. It also has a slide-show feature but it's fairly simplistic with just interval, border offsets, and so on as available options. No fancy wipes or anything but this is a RAW processor so I'm not sure how fitting something like wipes or etceteras, would be. It's got Versioning, Stacking, Keywording, Tagging, and Star Rating to help with progressive edit revisions and so forth. And the various tool pallets can be docked and floated for us multi-monitor users. ;)

My little old MP1,1 with GTX570 can select, apply many many adjustments, and display GH2 RAW files in 0.27s or 3 FPS depending how you look at it. Processing, converting, and saving one raw-to-jpeg image at a time occurs in about 0.8 seconds with every slider and adjustment set to something other than the as-shot defaults. Batch processing 100 such 16mpx GH2 raw files took considerably less time with an average 0.63 seconds for each. That's fast in the extreme - given the machine spec!

So give this a try. DL the trial version, walk through all the preferences to optimize it for your particular system, then try out all the features, and come back here and tell us what you thought - good or bad. I have a feeling some here will be typing CASP or ASP in their posts more often than LR from now on. Me, I'm uninstalling LR all together - that's for sure! ;) They've put together quite a system with hordes of free plug-ins and a fairly energetic community.

Right now Amazon has it for sale for $14.99 as a download. But you can only take advantage of the deal if you're either in the USA or are using something like a Tor network which makes you location independent. :D

NeatVideo target for create denoise presets and profiles https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14967/neatvideo-target-for-create-denoise-presets-and-profiles Sat, 16 Apr 2016 15:27:49 +0000 apefos 14967@/talks/discussions This target was developed to find the highest amount of noise for a given ISO. It uses shades of grey varying 8 units each.

Print the target in greyscale with high dpi printer in A4 or similar paper sheet, and fix it in the wall. I used day light from a window, but I think other lights can be used also.

Point camera to target, Set the iso and do the white balance in the target, record out of focus video in exposures -1, -1 1/3, -1 2/3, -2, the highest amount of noise will be in one of these exposures. For GH2 -1 1/3 was the highest noise, for NEX-5N -1 2/3 was the highest amount of noise.

import the video to timeline and set the neatvideo square in each shade of grey in each exposure to find which one has the highest amount of noise for each ISO (for each area neatvideo will show the amount of noise), then click in auto-profile and auto fine-tune, then save the profile.

to create the presets (noise filter settings), you can see the NEX-5N and GH2 presets that I uploaded to understand what to do for your camera in each ISO.

Enjoy!

Looking for beta testers for After Effects/Premiere Plug-in https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14803/looking-for-beta-testers-for-after-effectspremiere-plug-in Wed, 16 Mar 2016 17:26:55 +0000 Brumbazz 14803@/talks/discussions A friend and I have been trying to create a simple little plug-in for After Effects and Premiere. What the plug does is simply stretch a frame to the desired aspect ratio.

The idea behind the plugin is simply that sometimes, it can be advantageous to use the full sensor in 4:3 and then stretch in a 'clever' way afterwards. The included images show an original image in 4:3, stretched 16:9 and stretched 16:9 with a distortion grid overlay and the protected region shown in green. The plugin is quite customizable (stretching, size and position of protected region plus some bells and whistles) but the default settings should work in most cases.

It currently only works under Windows but in both AE and Premiere (6.0 or later), we expect to compile it for Mac eventually.

If you feel like this is a good idea and you would like to help us with testing, send me a short PM. We would like feedback on: bugs, usability, suggested features and settings.

As this is a hobby project no money will be involved :-)

General comments are also welcome

(Trim tells the OS which blocks are available for overwrite. Overwrite operations create a lot of overhead for SSD's which does not exist for hard drives.) I implemented it on my two Samsung 500 GB SSD's. No problems. When you run the command, a big warning comes up. Make sure you have just backed up, and do a test restore before implementing trim. You must have admin rights. The command is "sudo trimforce enable". The command works on all SSD's. You cannot pick and choose if you have more than one.

Production tips to get rid of artifacts and digital limitations https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6901/production-tips-to-get-rid-of-artifacts-and-digital-limitations Tue, 07 May 2013 11:34:05 +0000 lolo 6901@/talks/discussions Hello!, i want to start a thread for everyone to add their tips and tricks to get rid of the commpression issues, if someones add his own, please use the same format, here are mine:

Banding:

example: i´m shooting a sunset with the gh2

  1. set the proyect settings to 16bit
  2. double the layer
  3. on the upper layer isolate the banding area, can be rotoscoped, or keyed out, in this example is easy to key out the sky as it is only made of one color
  4. on the bottom layer use a blur effect

--pros: it truly gets rids of the banding

--cons: is useful only for soft areas with not much detail, but then again, banding almost always appears only on these areas

Dynamic range:

example: im shooting an actor on a bedroom, and a window is in frame, therefore i´m in backlight against the sun, so either i blow up the window or i underexpose for the actor, unless i increase the light of the bedroom, i have to choose, here is a trick:

  1. Camera must be stationary (over a tripod)
  2. Shoot the scene, exposing for the talent
  3. Without changing the frame, shoot again with no actor, exposing for the window
  4. Mix both shoots on the editor, rotoscoping the window against the actor.

--pros: increases the dynamic range of a camera, gives more information for color grading

--cons: the camera shouldnt move, and rotoscoping is tedious

This has been troubling me for some time, mostly because of woes and contradictions when creating DCPs with subtitles: the Interop standard (called "bad" dcp by the author) demands 24fps which is often not the rate of the original material nor spotted subtitles, plus the general information I have is that only SMPTE subtitles are reliable. Except many theaters still cannot play this DCP norm!(which is what the author of the post above states, written in the year 2014)
