Removing the Corrupted Start-up GH2 AVCHD Frames. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/621/removing-the-corrupted-start-up-gh2-avchd-frames. Mon, 08 Aug 2011 04:16:49 +0000 Skeptikal 621@/talks/discussions
Of course it would be great if the "start-up" corruption issue was solved...but in the meanwhile (and as much as I like the 100 mbps MJPEG) I still would like to use the hacked GH2 at as high a bit rate as is stable.

The problem was finding software that could: 1) handle MTS files; 2) be easy to work with (preferably a "portable" .exe); and 3) most importantly allow quick trimming WITHOUT re-encoding.

It's not free...but it isn't very pricey either ($40). There's a free trial available so you can check it out for yourself.

I have never done any flight shots. Are their any special things to take in consideration? Are the vibrations a disturbing element? What about shooting through the windows? Is it good to use slowmotion to compense the vibrations? Thx for any hints

Zeami Motokiyo - the Nine Degrees https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9480/zeami-motokiyo-the-nine-degrees Wed, 29 Jan 2014 00:23:52 +0000 goanna 9480@/talks/discussions Zeami Motokiyo, considered the father of the Japanese Noh Theatre, wrote on aesthetics and acting.

One day in 1977 in the Sydney Opera House library, I scrawled his "nine degrees" lessons into my notepad. I had no idea that I would often return to these notes for guidance - not only in acting, but in almost any field.

image *from Leonard Cabell. Pronko, THEATER EAST AND WEST. Perspectives toward a total theater.

Zeami advises actors to start with with getting a grounding at number 5 (ample and precise), then try the higher grades (6 and up) and only go for the lower grades later.

I try to think I do my camera work with precision and amplitude (i.e. attention to detail while managing the big picture). Just once in I while I imagine I might be verging on what Zeami calls "the style of the genuine flower" but it's fleeting.

Zeami talks of artists who attain the "Style of the Marvellous Flower" happening only once in every few hundred years.

I find I often think about where I'd put certain artists (like Brian Wilson) in terms of Zeami's Degrees. Or Chaplin. Or Pina Bausch. Even non-actors, like some gifted mechanics. It helps me get a perspective. That's pretty much all I retain of Zeami's writings: get good at what you do, then try to get a bit of magic into it, and only when you can't get any better do you allow yourself to do the rougher stuff. Oh, and I do remember the bit about the duty of the artist to pass on his/her trade. (Which brings me to contemplate some exceptional teachers I've known, those who were merely powerful and meticulous, and the majority whose simple precision and amplitude got the job done).

How to frame 'short' actors with 'tall' actors? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9392/how-to-frame-short-actors-with-tall-actors- Sun, 19 Jan 2014 16:23:19 +0000 azza_act 9392@/talks/discussions Hey guys, might be a silly question but I'm shooting my first feature in a couple of months and we had to recast the lead. He's much taller than the original actor. The lead actress is fairly short so when the new lead is standing next to her the height difference is really noticeable. I read that you can use 'apple boxes' or trenches (can't see this working on cement) to make the height difference less noticeable but how would you shoot wide shots etc? Cheers

It'll be dark. I've made a little research around the web, mostly its all about photography, where they all assume there's a tripod involved.

My best guess is:

Widest Angle Manual Focus to Infinity F8 1/30th shutter speed 1080 50P WB Tungsten

As I only get one chance I thought I'd ask to see if anyone else has done anything similar

What Qualifies You? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8121/what-qualifies-you Sun, 15 Sep 2013 21:21:04 +0000 shian 8121@/talks/discussions I'm noticing a disturbing trend around here, and so to help those coming here seeking knowledge and insight; Here is a simple guide for filtering out the "noise". Before seriously considering one's opinion on something you should look at a few things.

  1. If evaluating someone's opinion on a certain camera or lens - look to see what that person has shot and what it was shot with. Do they have footage you can look at that in your opinion qualifies them to speak on that subject?

  2. If evaluating someone's opinion on image manipulation or image quality - again look to see if this person has any footage that demonstrates they know anything at all on the subject.

  3. If evaluating someone's opinion on drives, cards, codecs, software, etc... again look to see if they have any tangible evidence to support their claims. (I know this seems like common sense, but... here we are)

  4. If the above categories are satisfied according to your judgement, then evaluate if the aesthetic produced by these individuals is something that "speaks to you" as an artist. If the answer is "yes" then that person qualifies as a reliable source to instruct or guide you in determining what gear and software you might want to purchase, along with which sources you might want to consult in your endeavors to improve your craft or acquire better tools.

[let me add - do your own tests. Experiment find out for yourself.]

The proof is in the final product. The rest is nonsense. [this also applies to me - I am not special in this regard. If you believe me to be unqualified, then at least you've done your due diligence, by exploring the above steps to do so. I have a wealth of experience and knowledge, but if what I do doesn't "turn you on" so to speak. Then there' no need to listen to me. Find someone who does, and push forward.]

I write this as a simple guide to help cut through the overwhelming wave of opinions that are not backed up by evidence. Specs don't mean anything. [People told me that I couldn't be doing with 8bit video what I'm doing with it. Which is ridiculous. Clearly I'm already doing it. If the specs say it's impossible, then the specs are misleading.] If the final product - the images and sounds are non-existent or worthless then it stands to reason that everything coming from that source is unreliable.

If you have something to contribute, by all means step forward, but if you can't solidly back it up, then please... think twice before bangin' on the keys. Mis-information around here is like a cancer, and it's slowly overwhelming the good information. This is a hazard with all public forums like this, but those who really have something to contribute are souring on the cacophony of nonsense... it won't be long before they tire of trying to help.

[on a side note - I love a good argument. Arguments are healthy, if and, only if, they eventually lead to some truth. That truth has to come in the form of some sort of proof. I realize I have strong opinions, but when evidence is presented that convinces me otherwise, I will concede, and change my opinion. Convince me, and I'll switch sides, otherwise I'm gonna rely on my experience and my ability to examine and evaluate, and thus form an opinion. As should you all. Just make sure you have good materials from which to judge. But on the things that I know for a fact, tried, true and tested, I will stand firm.]

Slow Motion Settings https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7378/slow-motion-settings Fri, 28 Jun 2013 07:08:23 +0000 Donnie88 7378@/talks/discussions Hi guys, I'll be shooting a promo video next week and wanted to have the majority of the film at in normal speed, with some key points in slow motion (not immensely slow like the Twixtor effects).

The film will be in 24p. Is this the right way of going about it:

  • Filming the real footage in 24p Cinema mode // Shutter Speed: 50

  • Filming the few slow motion parts in Manual Movie Mode > AVCHD (720p). Rec Quality: SH. Shuter Speed: 125.

I'll have a 24p, 1920 x 1080 timeline. Will drop the slow mo clips in there and scale it up to 1080p.

Does this sound right? Cheers!
