Two Fingers - Smurf (Anamorphic Music Video) https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5069/two-fingers-smurf-anamorphic-music-video Thu, 01 Nov 2012 19:55:17 +0000 Oedipax 5069@/talks/discussions

Here's a music video I shot recently with my friends. We've been working with Atlanta rapper Bre Fontaine for a while, and recently he was given a guest spot on Amon Tobin's new Two Fingers side project, which in turn gave us a chance to shoot a higher profile video than we have in the past.

I shot with the GH2 using my Kowa 16-D (I have the 16-H as well, but went with the lighter-weight D for this project) and Driftwood's Sedna 'A' AQ1 patch (Smooth -2 everything). The taking lens was an old Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AI. Redstan's anamorphic clamps (for orienting the lens and for mounting filters) rounded out the setup, plus a set of diopters (the +0.5 Redstan sells plus some lower quality +1 and +2's).

Graded with FilmConvert and a touch of adjustment layer curves in After Effects - mostly because I only had a couple days after editing and vfx were done to do the grade before we had to push it out. But I'm happy with the look overall. As a cinematographer it does pain me that the song is so short, because we had a lot of great looking stuff that you only see glimpses of in the video!

I'm linking the YouTube version up above because the streaming 1080p version looks better, but you can also check it out on Vimeo (vimeo.com/52431231) and download the original upload for a few more days.

Hope you guys dig it, it was fun to finally do a real project on anamorphic.

I was traveling at the time, so didn't have my shoulder rig or steadicam therefore some of the handheld is a bit shaky, but I'm happy with the results.

This is the rough cut, mixing together footage shot in one location on the same afternoon in Sedona, AZ.

I managed to use my school's dolly to pull off some test shots for smooth camera movements. Take note that I used and controlled everything singularly: I pulled focus, performed pans, and physically pushed the dolly itself. It was difficult, but I managed to get some usable footage. With one or two extra grips I can easily pull off great looking, smooth shots. I'll be shooting more with the dolly this week. I like grain.

These are fairly low res files for web delivery but the high res footage looked great too. Here are the four spots:

http://www.nixhealth.com/home/reform

The Epic was used for the wide and medium shots, the GH2 was used for the CU cutaways on the face and hands. I think the footage cuts very well. 'Just goes to show that you don't need to spend $100K on a camera package to get very nice results.

Here is the video that I entered.

This isn't a contest that will make me famous or anything like that. It is just for a bag O swag(AKA gear). However, it is a great way to show people what climbing is all about. If you are like me then your kids are probably climbing all over your house and furniture. Try taking them to your local climbing gym where they will have a lot of fun and where it is much safer for them to do this natural activity.

I was deathly afraid of heights my entire life because my parents were always so afraid I would fall off something. I never even climbed trees when I was a kid because I had such an intense fear of heights. Then when my son was 5 years old he looked up at a 40 foot wall and said "Dad, that is what I want to do". Little did I know that what he really meant was "Dad that is what I want to do the rest of my life".

For someone that is that terrified of heights the thought of climbing a 40 foot wall is almost unbearable. However, I realized that I must overcome that fear in order to teach my son not to fear it. I overcame my intense fear of heights so that I could enjoy the sport my son loves so dearly and I have been climbing right there with him ever since. Needless to say my son definitely lacks a fear of heights.

Here is another video showing what the youth climbing competitions in the US are like. If you have any questions about where the closest place to climb is for you just ask and I will try to help you out.

This was shot entirely with a hacked GH2. I used the No adverse affects settings because I just can't have any write errors at all with these live events that you only get one take for.

"Tweedling" short film https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4941/tweedling-short-film Fri, 19 Oct 2012 19:43:42 +0000 ChainsawFilms 4941@/talks/discussions This is my latest completed short film. There's a lot of baggage with this one - basically 8 local directors were going to make an updated Alice In Wonderland zero budget feature, but due to various reasons that never came about and it's not gone off in a "different direction". I'm being polite :) Lots of internal bullshit, blah blah blah.

This was meant to be a side project for me, 4 weeks of work. I got half a page of dialogue and then "Alice fights TweedleDum and TweedleDee". Well, this is the result. I cut half of the half a page of dialogue, added a musical number, and decided the Tweedles would be better off fighting against themselves. In their minds.

8 months later and it's done, lol.

There's some GH2 stuff in here. Not a lot. The commentators were filmed on the GH2 against a greenscreen. There may be the odd insert here and there as well. The majority was a couple of Canon 550's and a Panasonic HMC151 on a steadicam. Had loads of issues intercutting those three different cameras - the 151 was fine, but the other two cameras were never white balanced (I was merely directing), and I'm guessing there was some funky stuff going on with profiles or something as one of the Canon's had huge colour shifts between lenses. Basically that's my excuse for some poorly matched footage in there. I done my best with what I had.

The best thing to come out of this project; it was the first time I'd had a DSLR on set, and the footage convinced me it was a viable alternative to a "proper" camcorder. Of course, that was just shoddy 550 footage, and research lead me to the GH2 and to this very site.

Well, here's the "film". Standalone I'm afraid there's no context at all. This was supposed to be the scene where Alice is trying to get into the Secret Garden and the Tweedles try to stop her.

The Colors of Fall https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4920/the-colors-of-fall Wed, 17 Oct 2012 22:45:09 +0000 GravitateMediaGroup 4920@/talks/discussions First of all, I am WELL aware that some of the slider shots are not perfect in this video due to the fact I'm using a piece of junk Optek that I was just testing to see if I could see myself having any use to own a descent slider, turns out I liked the results enough to purchase a slider with ball bearings that I haven't received yet, and am hoping for much better results. Also, some of the shots have had a pinch of post stabilizing added to them and we all know that's not a flawless method. Basically this video was shot mainly to test the whole "slider" thing, a Sigma 30mm, and a Voightlander 25mm (along with some Voightlander 17.5 that I exchanged the 25mm for.) I believe 98% of the shots are done with Flowmotion v2, and 2 clips (time lapse of clouds and the shot after) were shot on a Panasonic AC130. I was also trying to achieve a some what "flat" BMCC color grade by using a combination of 2 MB looks and a few other things in Sony Vegas, which seemed headed in the right direction as far as the grade (let me know what I could do to improve the look). Any feedback would be nice, but like I said already, I'm aware that the slider shots are not flawless, and there are a lot of them....that's the point of testing right? : ) Any other questions just ask.

I will try and have a vimeo version online by tomorrow.

GH2 with 2/3" B4 adapter at the 2012 War & Peace show https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4860/gh2-with-23-b4-adapter-at-the-2012-war-peace-show Wed, 10 Oct 2012 14:41:32 +0000 FW200 4860@/talks/discussions Hi all, I used my GH2 at a reenacting event this summer. I used a homemade shoulder rig along with a homemade B4 adapter. Sadly the lens I got only had a x1.7 extender and not a x2 so the edges of the lens are visible.. This is why I chose to do a fake 21:9 conversion in the edit.. I also used footage from Gopro HD Hero 2's (One running at 720p50 and one at 1080p25), a contour SD model and another camera running at 30fps (which you can hear). The GH2 footage can be easily identified.. I used flowmotion v2.02 iirc.

Audio was recorded on 2 microphones through a zoom H4, though I used the camera mics from gopro's etc as much as possible. My style is throwing the camera around a lot and the GH2 worked quite well for that. It was set at 1080p25.

The event shown in the video was a reenacting display we took part in, showing Soviet gear (vehicles, uniforms and weapons) vs "mujaheddin".

Despite the fact that the lens was not a x2 extender lens I was pretty happy with how it turned out, sadly I couldn't do much about the other cameras (and their settings).. only one gopro was mine..
