Short visual poem: IT LÊSTE LJIPAAI - THE LAST LAPWING EGG [GH2, Canis Majoris] https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6752/short-visual-poem-it-leste-ljipaai-the-last-lapwing-egg-gh2-canis-majoris Sat, 20 Apr 2013 05:49:08 +0000 richardwouter 6752@/talks/discussions In Fryslân there is a cultural-historical competition to find the first lapwing egg of the year. This visual poem captures the spirit of a tradition, which is bound for extinction.

I made this film in admiration of my father. When I was a little boy he took me into the meadows to find eggs. I still remember the beauty of the landscape, the sound of the birds and the excitement when we found eggs. Sadly we never found the first egg. I also remember the cold of the wind and tired feelings in my small legs. Often asking my father to carry me on his back.

DISCLAIMER: No real eggs were harmed during the making of this film. We only used empty egg shells. My father stopped collecting eggs years ago.

Gathering lapwing eggs is prohibited by the European Union, but Fryslân (a northern province of the Netherlands) was granted an exception for cultural-historical reasons. The Frisian exception was removed in 2005 by a court, which determined that the Frisian executive councillors had not properly followed procedure. As of 2006 it is again allowed to look for lapwing eggs between 1 March and 9 April, though harvesting those eggs is now forbidden.

Lapwings belong in meadows. The name lapwing describes the sound its broad wings make when in flight. Lapwings are also known as peewits, thanks to their shrill call. They are very vocal during mating season and have glorious courting rituals in the air. In the spring, the male makes several simple hollows in the ground and the female chooses one to make brood her eggs in. Both males and females brood the eggs and care for the chicks. Should their nest with chicks be threatened, they will defend their young with all their might. Sometimes, you see them flying after a harrier, constantly attacking the raptor. If it really gets serious, they will pretend to have a broken wing, luring the predator away from the nest.

The Frisian languages are a closely related group of Germanic languages, spoken by about 500,000 members of Frisian ethnic groups, who live on the southern fringes of the North Sea in the Netherlands and Germany. The Frisian languages are the second closest living languages to English, after Scots. Filmed at Vegelinsoord (West Frisian: Vegelinsoard) a small village in Skarsterlân in the province Fryslân of the Netherlands.

Forth bridges - GH3 timelapse and video footage https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6726/forth-bridges-gh3-timelapse-and-video-footage Wed, 17 Apr 2013 12:07:04 +0000 gib 6726@/talks/discussions Here's a wee video I did almost entirely on a GH3 over the past few months (two clips are GH2)

It's a mixture of video and time-lapse of the Forth road and rail bridges around Edinburgh in Scotland. Initially I was just using it as a learning exercise about the GH3, but the bridge folks liked it themselves and started using it.

There are some dust bunnies in there, but I have learned not to go beyond F16 these days

I managed to get 510 feet up to the top of the Forth road bridge, but the barriers were moving so much my timelapse photo's were all blurred, so it's only shaky video footage from the top (I will take a proper tripod up next time)

I'm a german "digital media" graduate and would like to present to you our final project

"Replacement Music"

a 30min. no-budget short about a fictional reality in which music and music instruments are banned and illegal.

I was responsible for the cinematography and grading. The story, directing, editing etc. was done by two of my ex fellow students.

I was amazed about how well the hacked GH2 performed in various situations and am extremely thankful for being able to use such an amazing device!

I think it's time for me to applaud Vitaliy, Nick Driftwood and all the others who make this possible for all of us!

Awesome work!!

P.S.: I hope you can enjoy this, even if you don't speak german. Since this is not the final version, which is still a "work in progress" there are no subtitles yet, sry!

Oh and please don't share the vimeo link outside of this forum, since it's not the "official release" THX!

Cheers, David

Here's 3 minutes of such pleasure, in my opinion.

Make sure you set quality to "Original", then fill your screen, and enjoy.

All the "steadicam" shots were made with a tripod just opening it's legs as wide as possible (close to 90º) and holding it under the head with three fingers (not for long shots really). The ground level shot was done just holding it upside down and flipping it in post.

Population Zero is my latest short film. Check it out :)

After an alien life form visited planet earth our fate was sealed. Two years later one of the last survivors is desperately trying to find out if there's still anyone out there. Haunted by the past he doesn't seem to see the obvious when he finds a boy in an abandoned house.

I used Canis Majoris hack (Day and Night) and following lenses:

  1. Voigtländer Nokton 25mm F0.95 Prime Lens

  2. SLR Magic Hyperprime 50mm F0.95 Lens

  3. SLR Magic Hyperprime 12mm T1.6 Lens

  4. Panasonic Pancake 20mm F1.7

  5. Canon 50mm f1.4 (For zooms, 100mm)

As a student, I did this during 3/4 months, on my spare time. I did the maximum tasks I could handle : storyboard, scouting, directing, camera, grade, cut, very limited "vfx", sound design (enjoyed a lot this part). I learned a lot during this project, and can't wait to start another one !

I hope you'll enjoy it ! Feel free to comment ;)

Thanks to @Vitaliy_Kiselev and @driftwood for their work !

This is a music video I shot with my AF100 and GH2, against a green screen (which I overlit.) I'm still learning about green screen, and there are a few places where I just couldn't get a clean demarcation of the subject and the background. Also, the customer chose all the backgrounds, which aren't to my taste, but someone might enjoy it.

You can download all the contestants here, but I guess most of you will only be impressed by visuals of demos that are run on contemporary hardware, and if you happen to not own a high-end PC, you can still watch the video recordings of some of those demos on YouTube. (Notice that those demos render the graphics in real-time as they run, the videos are actual live recordings.)

I found especially impressive those PC demos that ran in the "64k" category, where the whole of the demo code has to be smaller than 65536 bytes, e.g.:

And this demo here ran in the "4k" category, so the whole of the demo code had to be smaller than 4096 bytes:

GH2 and heavy snowfall https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6531/gh2-and-heavy-snowfall Thu, 28 Mar 2013 12:30:47 +0000 DeejayMD 6531@/talks/discussions Hello there.

The whole Winter 2012/2013 was pretty boring, not much snow and moderate temperatures, until March shows how a nice Winter has to look like! We had up to 30cm of snow here (not bad for Hamburg), which was also caused by a Lake Effect from the Baltic Sea. I tried to document that with my GH2, the 14-140mm and Voigtlander 25mm. I often also used the 80% slow motion.

The picture quality varies because heavy snowfall is hard for every codec and i forgot to hack my camera. Maybe a 100Mbit Hack had done a slightly better job.

Greets,

MD
