This is a piece about Umbria, a region south of Tuscany in Italy, where everything revolves around the "Lago Trasimeno", a lake called the green diamond. I wanted to recreate the look of ancient landscape paintings as I felt it was fitting perfectly to the dramatic weather we had over the course of the 14 days..

And it is time to do it now. To get to the final selection and to be judged by expert (and potential win the first price, which I doubt is possible), I need your vote now as the voting time from the audience is off in 24 hours. The good thing is that most of you already know my film as I got more than 10 000 views from personal-view members on my vimeo page, after a successful post here. As a reminder, I shot this short film with a hacked Panasonic Lumix GH1 one year ago and lots of people loved it which is a great reward already.

Please, lets go to http://festival.viewster.com/ and vote for "La Deuche from Hell" To find it more easily you select RANK order and country of origin "France" If I am the winner or win any price, I am going to promote personal-view community as GH1 is the start of everything for most of us. You can see my film posted on viewster.com or just go to the source. In advance, thanks so much for your support:

If he gets the funding, which I'm sure he will since it isn't even 24 hours yet and he's 1/3 there, I will be shooting it on the BMCC MFT and BMPCC. Check it out especially if you're into the whole RPG thing. There are 3 episodes (I didn't shoot any of them, but was the first AC on the third one) and they are funny, witty, and entertaining. All three episodes are on the Kickstarter page. If you like what you see and want to see a forth episode, back his Kickstarter, you can donate as little as $1 if you want. Thanks.

Indoor Climbing is a sport https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11313/indoor-climbing-is-a-sport Wed, 17 Sep 2014 11:20:18 +0000 mpgxsvcd 11313@/talks/discussions We had our first climbing comp of the season this past weekend. Climbing in our region is growing very rapidly now. We had over 70 kids competing in one of our smaller venues.

If you haven’t tried indoor climbing before you should. There are climbing gyms in almost every major city in the U.S. and even some in the smaller cities. It is a great low impact sport that really challenges the athlete to use their brain’s to figure out the problem as well.

If your kids don’t like team sports then climbing might be right for them. Check out your local gym or let me know if you can’t find one near you and I will try to locate one for you.

Camera Note: I really need a wider angle lens for these types of events. I was going to buy the 12-35mm for my GH4 but I decided to just get the LX100 instead. These venues are very dark so I need as fast a lens as possible. The LX100 with is Optical Power I.S. should be perfect for these types of events.

Everything was shot in Shutter Priority with Auto ISO. Hopefully, Panasonic will add the min shutter speed setting so I can switch to Program Priority with Auto ISO and gain more aperture control.

I up-converted to 1440p for YouTube. Auto Focus for 4K @ 30 FPS just isn’t where it needs to be yet.

Music video shot on Lumix GH3 and anamorphic adaptor at 50fps https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11298/music-video-shot-on-lumix-gh3-and-anamorphic-adaptor-at-50fps Tue, 16 Sep 2014 02:41:24 +0000 Wotsisname 11298@/talks/discussions Please have a look at the music promo I made on a Lumix GH3.

If you're interested in the tecky stuff, here it is, otherwise please just enjoy the pictures!

I used a kowa 8-Z anamorphic adaptor, mounted on a voigtlander Nokton 35mm F1.2. I also had a Tokina .4 achromat and a Cokin Diopter +2 for the Close ups.

It was all shot at night which presented problems as I found the Lumix isn't very good in low light. I was shooting at 50fps which reduced the amount of light I had even further. I also found that if the lens was fully open it was difficult to get a focus. Not because it was too shallow, but because it wouldn't focus on anything with the adaptor.

As you can see I over-cranked the ISO (accidentally went to 3200 when I thought I was on 1600), but I couldn't set lights up on the banks of the Thames at 3am, as we didn't have permission to be there. I wish I'd got someone to stand close by reflecting a bright torch off a white shirt though. I can only hope that I get away with the graininess in the spirit of low/no budget film making, and it looks like 16mm. I couldn't ask the actors to go back into the Thames for me!

I think the Lumix in low light has given the film a real 'look' but in all honesty I wasn't impressed by how much colour information it recorded. This camera really needs light to work well.

You can also see the notorious shutter wobble a few times. Weirdly it doesn't bother me in this video, as I think it suits the slightly surreal mood. Same goes for the sodium street lights making the flicker. I wanted to keep the shutter above 100 (I was shooting 50fps), but I could have decreased flicker by reducing the shutter speed. However, I decided to embrace it, and instead increased the shutter, which made the flicker more pronounced.

Staying close up to the actors, using the diopters, gave me a picture I liked the most. The bokeh looks lovely and soft and cinematic. Shots where I had to focus to infinity were difficult - the bokeh is ugly in those shots (in my opinion), taking the shape of a kind of horizontal tear. But I couldn't film the whole video in close ups!

It was difficult to shot this as a one-man-band. Having to screw two different diopters on or off every time I wanted to change my proximity to the actors made it quite fiddly. I was also moving lights (I had x3 LED panels). I had some other taking lenses, but it wasn't practical to change during the shoot.

Lastly, I know its normal to crop the super-wide picture you get from shooting 2x anamorphic on a 16:9 sensor, but I decided to embrace it. It's fun, and a bit silly, but its a music promo, so why not.

Hope you enjoy. The track by Durlston George, his debut single, is lovely.

Raining - GH3 exposure tests / color grade https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11231/raining-gh3-exposure-tests-color-grade Tue, 09 Sep 2014 09:26:02 +0000 JulienMisc 11231@/talks/discussions

Hi there,

This short edit is a test of how do I need to expose my shots with the GH3. It was also a great opportunity to see how the weather sealed body is impacted or not by the rain.

I've used only two lenses : Olympus 45mm 1.8 (with Vari ND) and Canon FD 35-105 f3.5 with RJ Lens Turbo. I've recently shot FMX and I've found that the Canon FD and the Panasonic kit lens (14-42) give some moire on the image. So this test was also made for checking moire with this two lenses. I find that the GH3 need to be expose for highlights, shadows keep enough details and can be recover in post. Be careful with the noise. GH3 tends to be (very) noisy - even at low ISO - when you try to gain the maximum of dynamic range. Although it has just 50mbps MOV codecs, I find it pretty stable and robust for post. Don't try big corrections or grades of course. I've edited it directly in Premiere Pro without encoding.

I've used FilmConvert, Neat Video, Fast color correction and some curves for achieving the look. It was a good test for the denoiser and this codec. You can smooth the noise easily but banding start to appear. Some examples in this video. In conclusion, I really like the GH3, despite some drawbacks/missing features, it has an incredible quality. It just need lots of tests to find the right profile or codec for the right scene. It's a good B cam, very interesting in sports.

The compression give some big artefacts and bandings. I will try to encode a better one and update it soon. You can download the H.264 file which is better. Comments are welcome !

SLR Magic 12mm Hands On Experience https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2261/slr-magic-12mm-hands-on-experience Sun, 12 Feb 2012 21:51:17 +0000 GOODEMPIRE 2261@/talks/discussions I need to apologize to Andrew from SLRMagic for not being able to submit this review in time. Although I got the lens in late December, I couldn't test it until late January when I actually got all my visa issues resolved and could finally go to St. Petersburg for the final shoot. My impressions of the lens are purely subjective as I'm more a filmmaker than a professional DP. But I hope my observations will seem relevant to anyone working in the same genre (documentary).

So when I opened up the box the lens looked small and toyish, and it did resemble some of the surveillance glass which exemplified my initial fears. However from the very first moment I was charmed with the combination of wide angle field of view and quite shallow DOF. None of my lenses was giving me both.

Next thing I discovered is that the focus ring is stiff. Especially at the end of the circle. I can't say it was a big obstacle but I didn't expect it. The very location of the aperture ring (front side) and focus ring was a bit unusual as well. It took some practice. I also quickly found out that it's almost impossible to use this lens with my follow focus system because the focus ring is too close to the camera's body (I'm sure I'm not the first one to pay attention to this). Nevertheless because you typically are not supposed to play with focus a lot at 12mm I didn't find that very frustrating.

The lens itself didn't seem to me very sharp up until f2.5. It kind of devalues a bit the whole idea of having a fast wide angle lens, but 2.5 is still rather fast, plus after f4 the lens produces really crisp images (in my opinion). I won't speculate about the barrel distortion as I may need some math to support my assumptions and I'm really bad at math.

I ordered a variable ND filter for SLR Magic and because its front side is wider I guess it was a 58mm attachment which resulted in some visible (albeit nice) vignetting.

Now let me tell you why I love this lens and why I'm using it more than any other in my possession.

— I often have to shoot handheld in extreme conditions with no rig or other support. GH2 is an amazing camera for such purposes as it has a form factor of a small amateurish camera and you can go to subways, shopping malls, railway stations — unnoticed, with no special permissions. Before SLRMagic I was mostly using my 20mm Pancake. But although I love it too, it is very vulnerable to sudden motion and shakiness. While this 12mm is really perfect because its wide angle serves as an essential stabilization tool — even with no tripod it is giving me a decently stable picture. For example I had to shoot that way in the well-guarded residence of the Russian oligarchs (pretending I'm only taking stills for myself while I was doing video of course) and after applying some AE stabilization in post my shots look as if I was there on a tripod. — I like the form factor of this lens. With the little handle screwed to the bottom and my LCDVF attached the GH2 turns into a well balanced replica of the old 16mm cameras from the 60s. — I can't explain it but I also like the representation of colors it is providing. In the poorly lit settings of St Petersburg I was getting a very truthful color range, which resulted in almost zero color correction in post. — I also need to admit that I fell in love with the circular form of the aperture diaphragm. It produces a unique and cinematic bokeh.

I won't hesitate to recommend this lens to a filmmaker. It is fantastic for run and gun, for setting up a scene with a static wide shot, for shooting in relatively dark environments.

those of you who are patient enough can see how this lens contributed to my new documentary "Don't Cry For Your Hair" Shots made by SLR Magic 12mm are at the very end
