New music video project! BMCC 2.5K and GH3 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9617/new-music-video-project-bmcc-2.5k-and-gh3 Thu, 13 Feb 2014 21:19:56 +0000 bwhitz 9617@/talks/discussions Been working on this for a few months... recording/producing the song and video. This is the first real project I've done with the Blackmagic Cinema Cam. It's amazing to work with! Same with the GH3... it really holds it's own for the 60fps shots. All regular-speed shots were on the Blackmagic in 2.5k RAW.

The project itself is a satirical take on modern pop/club songs. Enjoy!

The Volcano Ride https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13064/the-volcano-ride Thu, 28 May 2015 05:52:21 +0000 GMC 13064@/talks/discussions Hi folks, here is my new film about mountainbiking in La Palma, shot on Lumix GH2, GH4, GoPro Hero 4 & 3 plus a DJI Phantom Quadcopter.

La Palma is special in many ways, most notably due to the fact that the landscape is dominated by volcanoes, the highest being Roque de los Muchachos at 2426m. For mountainbikers this means endless trails in a beautiful scenic landscape with high contrast, the black and sometimes bronze / red rock formations, the blue skies, green vegetation and blue sea.

Riders: Harald Doucha, Philipp Heck, Andreas Höfner and myself

Enjoy the MTB trails of La Palma and let me know what you think! Share it with your friends too if you like it!

Shot with a DJI Phantom 1 quadcopter, two GoPro Hero 4's, two GoPro Hero 3's, a Lumix GH4 and a Lumix GH2.

Special thanks to Philipp Heck (also here on vimeo, have a look at his films) who carried the quadcopter throughout the 4 days on his back on the bike, just fuelled by the thought of getting good aerial footage. Due to the strong winds at the high altitudes (up to 2400m) he was risking his equipment just to get the one shot!

Flavours of Arabia https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12921/flavours-of-arabia Sun, 03 May 2015 12:39:18 +0000 GMC 12921@/talks/discussions Travelling to the arabian peninsula is always a fascinating mix of feelings. You find the huge, futuristic skyscrapers which feel weird and cold, dominating the skyline. But quite amazingly the arabian culture is present everywhere, especially at the various souqs, although most of them are newly built and more than 80% of the people are migrant workers from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. This makes up for a very interesting mix of cultures, giving so many flavours - the Flavours of Arabia!

With my images and the music fom Amon Tobin, "El Wraith" (licenced from ninjatune.net) I wanted to convey this weird, perplexing but highly fascinating cocktail of feelings visiting Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Doha, Qatar (Souq Waqif).

Shot on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, the BMPCC Speedbooster and the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens. Some additional shots on a Nikkor 50mm f1.4

The Horror...the horror...INTERVIEW w/ Landis, Carpenter & Cronenberg https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12874/the-horror...the-horror...interview-w-landis-carpenter-cronenberg Sun, 26 Apr 2015 13:55:38 +0000 jleo 12874@/talks/discussions “Fear on Film” is a 1982 roundtable discussion, hosted by filmmaker Mick Garris, featuring legendary directors David Cronenberg, John Landis, and John Carpenter. The group talks about the nature and history of horror films.

The genre of monster films and horror films has been consistent throughout the history of the business. If you look at the decades, there’s always cycles of westerns, war movies and comedies, but there have been horror films straight through. The only difference is budgets — whether they’re A pictures or B pictures.

I didn't really shoot enough to do a cohesive edit, but having lugged my camera and lenses all over the wold, it would be a shame not to use the footage at all. Shot mostly with an A7s, Rokinon 24mm, and Sony 55mm. There are a few iPhone 5s shots in there too. The motion controlled stuff was done one a Syrp Genie. Cut in Premiere CC, graded with Film Convert. Music is Chet Faker.

Lo-Fi Music Video shot with GH4 + a single Nikon lens https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12771/lo-fi-music-video-shot-with-gh4-a-single-nikon-lens Fri, 10 Apr 2015 07:15:48 +0000 shian 12771@/talks/discussions So in keeping with this week's "Less is more discussion" - Gab's song "White Room" got licensed to be used in the opening titles of Lifetime's "Killer Crush" and they told us initially that we had until the end of April before it would be released. We wanted to know when it would go public so we could coordinate releasing a music video for the song. We had a cool concept, and were planning out the logistics and budget for the shoot, when they called us and said, "Hey, we decided to release the film this weekend instead." So we scrapped our initial idea and scrambled to get a video shot, which we literally made up as we went. Trying to piece together a music video in 2 days with whatever time we could steal away from our work schedules was a nice challenge. Runnin' and Gunnin' - super lo-fi. Shooting in Gab's garage after work that night, then hitting the metro and shooting in spots around the city, and then trying to catch the sunrise in a parking structure in Burbank the next morning, taking a nap and shooting the opening guitar shot before heading home to edit. Cutting it all together and grading it for today's release.

Other than my buddy driving the truck while I shot out the back for one shot, this was a one man crew. Which I will probably never do again, cuz it's exhausting, and I really prefer to pre-plan my shots so I get better composition. Making stuff up on the spot in available light is fun, but then I get into the edit, and start berating myself... "Why the hell didn't you get a shot from THIS ANGLE OVER HERE, YOU IDIOT???" And without metering; when I go to grade I'm hating myself. I was hoping for a triumph in low budget shooting, instead... it is what it is.

Shot for $50 [Gaff tape, black wrap, a new monitor cable, and 2 fares on the metro.] in available light.

[except] - The garage stuff was lit, and it was improvised using:

which had one of these inside on a dimmer image http://www.filmtools.com/ligdep/nehoba2532qu.html and I just set it on a music stand locked into the flat position.

  • A fogger I bought at Party City 5 years ago that they don't make anymore so I can't find you a link. But it was $30.

....all of which I already owned.

The practical lights in the garage were already there. Just an Ikea nightstand light on the piano with a CFL bulb (the aged paper cover gave it that yellow glow). And a little nook light on the shelf. WB on the camera was @ 4100k

No lights in the metro, or on the streets, or the parking structure.

The whole thing was shot with a single lens.

Camera

  • GH4
  • UHD 24
  • internal codec
  • [CineD (-5, -2,-5,-5,0) Contrast curve (S+2, H-2)]
  • Graded with ColorGHear Pro

Fullscreen for best presentation - white page embeds make it look too dark, and certain things that don't actually have moire pick it up when squeezed into small form.

Feedback, please! First 'narrative' music video I've shot. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12846/feedback-please-first-narrative-music-video-ive-shot. Tue, 21 Apr 2015 20:38:28 +0000 StudioDCCreative 12846@/talks/discussions Hey everyone, I just shot this music video. It's my first serious music vid (the rest have been edited concert footage), and I'd really appreciate constructive feedback from those of you with real experience. The band really rock and I wanted to make something that had a bit of a strange homage to The Shining, a slight off-kilter feel you can't necessarily put your finger on. Those of you with experience will no doubt see what I was trying to do and have comments on how I could do it better. I welcome those. Anyways, please try to be nice, but I'll take anything honest.

Here's the vid:

Video I shot of multiple young performers https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12845/video-i-shot-of-multiple-young-performers- Tue, 21 Apr 2015 20:33:05 +0000 PauloTeixeira 12845@/talks/discussions This may look simple but it's a bit more work to edit than it looks. I spent some time color grading all the clips. Concert lighting can be good for live events but for videos, it can be a pain sometimes. I used mostly audio from the Audio Board using the Zoom H4N. Mixing in some live sound from the AC90 for some of the performances. Cleaning up the board audio a bit in Premiere. The effect I used (Denoiser) had a side effect and so I had to export the fixed audio and then put that back inside the timeline. Choosing which parts of each song to use was also a ton of work and I needed to make sure they start and end at the right times.

I did this all on my own free will since I thought it would look cool.
