Samsung NX1 issues https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12079/samsung-nx1-issues Fri, 02 Jan 2015 15:18:14 +0000 brianl 12079@/talks/discussions A lot of early Samsung NX1 users are returning their cameras on account of an ugly exposure bug in the NX1's 4k video. There's an odd, and so far unfixable glitch in the camera when in full manual video mode. The camera randomly hunts for exposure, even when locked down. You'll see the brightness increase and decrease randomly, even if the light doesn't change and the camera doesn't move. The symptoms are worse when you pan or tilt from an overexposed area, such as a light, to a dark area, you'll see the camera hunt around for exposure as if it's set on AUTO, problem is, this is in FULL manual mode. Many say a firmware fix can solve it, but Samsung already released v1.1 and this issue wasn't addressed, so people don't want to gamble that Samsung will fix the issue. So cameras are going back. Look for USED NX1's on the shelves of B&H and on ebay. It's still a great still cam, but video functions weren't done right. Until it's fixed, IMO this camera isn't viable for serious video work. sample:

Pentax K-3 II. blast from the past https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12855/pentax-k-3-ii.-blast-from-the-past Wed, 22 Apr 2015 18:24:18 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 12855@/talks/discussions image

Available at http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-K-3II-DSLR-Body-Only/dp/B00WBIYADC/

RICOH is proud to introduce the PENTAX K-3 II Digital SLR; refining the ultimate field camera. Developed as the successor to the award winning PENTAX K-3, the new K-3 II shares its predecessor’s magnesium alloy casing, metal chassis, 24.35 effective megapixel resolution, 27-point AF system and approximately 8.3 frames per second shooting while adding an improved 4.5EV stop shake reduction system, new high-speed AF algorithm, GPS, gyro sensor panning detection and automatic horizon correction.

"The introduction of the PENTAX K-3 II marks our commitment to providing photographers with rugged high quality solutions that exceed our customers’ expectations,” said Jim Malcolm, President of Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation. The “magic’’ we add to our cameras through the motion-controlled Shake Reduction (SR) technology helps our photographers shoot for the stars and capture images in stunning detail; no other manufacturer is offering such a variety of features in a single camera design.”

The K-3 II is the first camera in the PENTAX line to incorporate Pixel Shift Resolution® for capturing still life subjects with ultra-high resolving power. Pixel shift technology uses the camera’s in-body Shake Reduction mechanism to move the image sensor at single pixel increments, capture 4 separate images, which are subsequently combined into a single high definition image. Benefits include higher resolving power, reduced false color and improved overall image quality of non-moving subjects.

Building on the PENTAX K-3 camera’s rugged dust proof and weather-resistant construction, the K-3 II features a built-in GPS receiver, GPS log and electronic compass purpose- designed to stand up to demanding location work. The GPS system records shooting location, camera orientation, altitude, and provides a date/time stamp tied specifically to your images; all of which can be transferred to a computer and mapped using services such as Google Earth™.

By combining the power of GPS positioning with in-body shake reduction mechanism, the PENTAX K-3 II cameras exclusive built in ASTROTRACER® features tracks and photographs astronomical bodies such as stars and planets. The system uses GPS and orientation location data together with magnetic and acceleration sensors to calculate the motion needed to synchronize the CMOS sensor with the movement of the stars; making it possible to capture stars as points of light rather than star trails during long exposures.

“The original PENTAX K-3 has been my go to camera since it was first introduced,” said professional photographer Kerrick James. “Now with the addition of GPS, Pixel Shift Resolution, and 4.5EV stop shake reduction, my field photography is further refined and documented regardless of my remote location. This ensures my demanding shooting style will always be met and will provide my clients with consistently high quality photography.”

The new PENTAX K-3 II uses the advanced and intuitive user interface common to most PENTAX camera products. The system is compatible with a host of accessories including a versatile array of flash units, lenses, battery grip and interchangeable focus screens.

Pricing and Availability

The PENTAX K-3 II will be available in May 2015 for a suggested retail price of $1099.95.

1. High-resolution images

The K-3 II combines an APS-C-size CMOS image sensor free of an anti-aliasing filter with the high-performance PRIME III imaging engine — identical to the one installed in the PENTAX 645Z medium-format digital SLR camera — to optimize the imaging power of approximately 24.35 effective megapixels and deliver sharp, fine-gradation images. It also effectively minimizes annoying noise generated at higher sensitivities, allowing high-grade, high-sensitivity shooting even at the top sensitivity of ISO 51200.

2. New-generation PENTAX-original shake reduction mechanism

(1) Upgraded in-body SR mechanism to assure the best shake reduction performance in the K series

The K-3 II comes equipped with a PENTAX-developed SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism that can be used with any compatible PENTAX interchangeable lens.* Thanks to its new, high-precision gyro sensor, this mechanism assures more stable, effective camera-shake compensation than ever before, with an extra-wide compensation range of as much as 4.5 shutter steps — the widest of all K-series digital SLR models. Even when taking a panning shot, this efficiently controls the SR unit to always produce the best image possible under the given conditions.

(2) New Pixel Shift Resolution System to deliver image resolutions higher than the image sensor’s capacity

The K-3 II features Pixel Shift Resolution System,** the latest super-resolution technology, which captures four images of the same scene by shifting the image sensor by a single pixel for each image, then synthesizes them into a single composite image. Compared to the conventional Bayer system, in which each pixel has only a single unit of color data, this new system obtains all color data in each pixel. This innovative system delivers super-high-resolution images with far more truthful color reproduction and much finer details, while significantly lowering the level of high-sensitivity noise. Recorded images can also be synthesized, either on a computer using the accompanying utility software, or with the camera’s in-body RAW-data development function.

(3) Innovative AA filter simulator to minimize moiré

By applying microscopic vibrations to the image sensor unit at the sub-pixel level during image exposure, the K-3 II’s AA (anti-aliasing) filter simulator*** provides the same level of moiré reduction as an optical AA filter. Unlike an optical filter, which always creates the identical result, this innovative simulator lets the user not only switch the anti-aliasing filter effect on and off, but also to adjust the level of the effect. This means that the ideal effect can be set for a particular scene or subject.

(4) Supportive shooting functions

The K-3 II’s SR unit has a flexible design that tilts the image sensor unit in all directions. This is one reason why the K-3 II can provide a host of handy shooting functions, including auto level compensation; image-composition fine-adjustment; and ASTROTRACER, which simplifies advanced astronomical photography.

3. High-precision, SAFOX 11 sensor module with 27-point AF system

The K-3 II features the sophisticated SAFOX 11 AF sensor module with an expanded image-field coverage using 27 AF sensors (25 cross-type sensors positioned in the middle). The center sensor and the two sensors just above and below it are designed to detect the light flux of an F2.8 lens, making it easy to obtain pinpoint focus on a subject when using a large-aperture lens. Thanks to the combination of a state-of-the-art AF algorithm and the advanced PENTAX Real-Time Scene Analysis System, this AF system assures much improved AF tracking performance in the AF Continuous mode, while providing an extra-wide measurable luminance range (–3EV to +18EV).

4. High-precision exposure control with PENTAX Real-Time Scene Analysis System

The K-3 II is equipped with the advanced PENTAX Real-Time Scene Analysis System, which is supported by an approximately 86,000-pixel RGB metering sensor. This system is designed to optimize the camera’s overall performance, not only by controlling exposure with great accuracy, but also by utilizing the data obtained by the light-metering sensor to further enhance the accuracy of autofocusing and white-balance adjustment. It has also expanded the measurable luminance level to as low as –3EV. By detecting the type of scene or subject using the RGB metering sensor, the K-3 II selects the exposure settings that are more consistent with the photographer’s creative intentions.

5. High-speed continuous shooting with a top speed of approximately 8.3 images per second

The K-3 II continuously records as many as 23 images in the RAW format, or 60 images in the JPEG format,**** in a single sequence. This has been made possible through the use of several innovative developments, including: a high-speed, highly accurate control mechanism that regulates the shutter, mirror and diaphragm independently; a damper mechanism that effectively minimizes mirror shock; and a high-speed data transmission system incorporated in the PRIME III imaging engine.

6. Optical viewfinder with nearly 100-percent field of view

The K-3 II’s glass prism has been treated with a coating that is designed to improve reflectance for a much brighter viewfinder image. With a magnification of approximately 0.95 times, its viewfinder provides a broad, bright image field for easy focusing and framing.

7. Full HD movie recording with an array of creative tools

The K-3 II captures Full HD movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels; 60i/30p frame rate) in the H.264 recording format. It also comes equipped with a stereo mic terminal for external microphone connection and a headphone terminal. The user can even adjust the audio recording level manually and monitor sound pressure levels during microphone recording. In addition to a host of distinctive visual effects available for movie recording,***** the K-3 II also provides the interval movie mode, which captures a series of 4K-resolution movie clips at a fixed interval

8. Built-in GPS module

Thanks to its built-in GPS module, the K-3 II provides a variety of advanced GPS functions, including the recording of location, latitude, longitude, altitude and UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) and direction at the time of shooting. The user can easily access images containing GPS data using a computer, to browse them, check on shooting locations and position data on the screen, or save them. The user can also take advantage of some unique tools, including: GPS log, which keeps track of the photographer’s movement; Electronic Compass, which displays the camera’s direction on the camera’s LCD monitor; and ASTROTRACER, which simplifies the tracing and photographing of celestial bodies by coupling GPS data with the camera’s SR mechanism.

9. Large, easy-to-view 3.2-inch LCD monitor with approximately 1,037,000 dots

On its back panel, the K-3 II features a 3.2-inch high-resolution LCD monitor with approximately 1,037,000 dots and a 3:2 aspect ratio. In addition to its wide-view design, this monitor also has a protective tempered-glass front panel for added durability, and a unique air-gapless construction in which the air space between LCD layers is eliminated to effectively reduce the reflection and dispersion of light for improved visibility during outdoor shooting.

10. Compact, solid body with dustproof, weather-resistant construction

The K-3 II’s exterior casing, consisting of top and bottom panels and front and back frames, is made of sturdy yet lightweight magnesium alloy. Thanks to the inclusion of 92 sealing parts in the body, it boasts a dustproof, weather-resistant and cold-resistant construction, assuring solid operation at temperatures as low as –10°C. It also features a dependable, durable shutter unit that withstands 200,000 shutter releases. Despite all these features, the K-3 II has been designed to be compact and maneuverable, assuring remarkable operability and swift response in the field.

11. Other features

Sigma's SD1 (Flagship) Foveon Camera - Prices tumble https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10800/sigmas-sd1-flagship-foveon-camera-prices-tumble Tue, 15 Jul 2014 07:19:12 +0000 goanna 10800@/talks/discussions Sigma seems to be finally generating attention for its Foveon range of cameras - so much the better if it generates for them the cash they'll needed for R&D if we ever want to see faster Foveon cameras.

Many understand the Foveon advantage: you can get a prize-winning, unforgettable picture, just once in a while, because of the aesthetic edge the sensor gives. The processors are slow; you'll have to convert the RAW to get that super-real look. You wait up to 6 seconds for the camera to write to its SD card. There's no video.

( I can imagine the Hitler-in-bunker subtitles film excerpt where the fuhrer invites all who want fast, cheap cameras with video to leave the room - and only two remain. This then, is for those two of us remaining in the bunker ;-)

The ~$600 DP1,2 and 3 series (Merril) produce fixed-lens shots which look as good as the (previously around $10,000) SLR Sigma SD1

Now there are the newer, boxy looking Dp' s in the ring as well- with pretty much the same sensor/processor as the big SD1. So nobody much bought the expensive SD1 one unless they were rich - or else sure of a certain job or shoot which would recoup the purchase price in one go - as well as come up with the winning shots.

But that's chanced recently; The same, once £5,3000 / $11,000 SD1 has starting popping up for sale at prices down by around 85% Off Now as low as$AUD1,400 !! (US$1250) Time to compare them again!

image

from http://fotogenerellinternational.wordpress.com/2013/04/10/comparison-sigma-dp2m-vs-sigma-sd1-30mm-f1-4/

Both the Sigma DP2m and SD1 are fine cameras which appeal to different target groups and which reach top forms under different conditions. The DP2m is a compact camera capable of astonishing image quality – the full format for the jacket pocket, so to speak. This compactness comes with disadvantages as well, lenses cannot be changed, one has to make do with a fixed normal focal length. The SD1 is equipped with the same Foveon sensor and performs similarly, but having a lens mount, it provides the possibility of changing lenses in order to be all geared up for any motif whatsoever. What happens, however, if one mounts the Sigma 30mm f1.4 onto the SD1, thus creating equal opportunities (as much as this is even possible with such different cameras) and let them compete against each other.

SEOUL, Korea – January 02, 2014 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd announced today the professionally-inspired NX30 compact system camera, featuring high quality images and with faster than ever performance. Samsung also expanded its line of NX lenses with the introduction of its first “S” Series premium lens.

"The NX30 continues the evolution of our award-winning NX series of cameras, bringing with it new and improved features such as a better imaging processor and our advanced SMART Camera offering. Not only does this camera deliver the performance users demand, it is also easy-to-use so that moments are never missed,” said Myoung Sup Han, Executive Vice President and Head of the Imaging Business Team at Samsung Electronics. "The NX30 allows photographers to shoot with confidence, providing a seamless ability to capture moments and share them immediately, delivering exceptionally beautiful photographs while creating an unmatched photo-sharing experience.”

Image Quality at the Core

High quality images with rich color are guaranteed with the advanced 20.3MP APS-C CMOS Sensor. Delivering shots that are bursting with sharp detail and intense colors, the large sensor is ideal for creating rich images with dramatic foreground and background blur, providing professional quality imaging that ignites the visual senses. Featuring the Samsung NX AF System II that boasts fast and accurate auto focusing, this new model ensures all moments, including fast-moving scenes and subjects that make up the beauty of everyday life, will never be missed.

Capturing short-lived, fast-paced moments in perfect clarity is achievable with the NX30's exceptionally fast 1/8000 sec Shutter Speed and the 9 frame per second (FPS) Continuous Shooting function. These features help to further break down the action and capture movement beyond what the eye can see so that each split second can be appreciated.

Featuring a unique, Tiltable Electronic Viewfinder (XGA, 2,359K-dot resolution), the NX30 makes it easier than ever to discover a new perspective. Whether crowds are obstructing the shot or a more creative angle is desired, the 80 degree tilt means that different viewpoints are simple to achieve. With the ability to move from side to side up to 180 degrees, and upward and downward up to 270 degrees, the NX30's 76.7mm (3.0-inch) Super AMOLED Swivel and Touch Display offers flexible angles which are especially useful for self-shooting, whether for stills or video capture.

Smart Connectivity, Tag & Go

Building on the successes of Samsung's market leading SMART Camera technology, the NX30's NFC and Wi-Fi capabilities offer the next-generation of connectivity, making it is easier than ever to take advantage of a host of intuitive sharing features. The ‘Tag & Go’ function lets users tap and share memories instantly and easily, pairing the NX30 with NFC enabled smartphones and tablets.

The Photo Beam feature allows the transfer of an image or video to a smartphone or tablet by simply touching the two devices together with no other configuration needed. MobileLink lets users select multiple images to send to four distinct smart devices at one time, so everyone can treasure photos without the need to take repetitive shots on each individual device. AutoShare automatically sends every photo you take instantly to your smartphone or tablet and the Remote Viewfinder Pro function enables control of the NX30 from a smartphone, allowing the user to zoom and snap shots remotely yet still have full visibility of the scene, opening up new photographic possibilities. Manual settings can still be accessed, including shutter speed and aperture, so that photographers can retain camera control yet have another option as to how they want to frame their shot.

Dropbox, the popular web storage service is pre-loaded on the NX30 in selected regions – making it the first camera-specific device to offer direct-to-Dropbox uploading. Additionally, users of the NX30 in select regions can upload directly to Flickr, the full resolution photo sharing site – another first in a camera-specific device. Using the advanced connected features of the NX30, images can be uploaded automatically so that snap happy photographers will not need to be concerned with filling up their memory cards ever again.

Experience Life from all Angles

The NX30 includes the sophisticated next-generation DRIMeIV Image Processor and a powerful DSP imaging engine that brings an unmatched shooting experience and Full HD 1080/60p movie capabilities. The high light sensitivity of the NX30, with a range from ISO100-25600, produces stunning images even in low light conditions and with OIS Duo technology, steady shots for better movie recording are guaranteed, even while on the move. The innovative technology provided by the DRIMeIV Image Processor also enables the 3D capture of scenes and subjects via the Samsung 45mm F1.8 2D/3D lens, letting memories live on through lifelike 3D images and videos displayed on compatible 3D devices. The introduction of OLED Color to the NX30 records the ultimate contrast and real colors, to make it possible for you capture landscapes that are rich and portraits with natural tones.

Advanced video features make the NX30 the ideal solution for movie makers searching for a compact yet high performing camera. In addition to Full HD Video Stereo Recording, the NX30 supports a standard 3.5mm microphone input for high quality audio capture while shooting movies. The Audio Level Meter appears on the display so you can continuously monitor the input level status while recording. In addition, the input level can be manually adjusted to ensure optimal audio quality. Moreover, the NX30 is also perfect for advanced video enthusiasts because of its HDMI live streaming with Full HD 30p output that makes it easy to connect with a large screen, recorder, and other HDMI devices.

Intuitive design is a central feature of the NX30. Two dedicated Custom Modes can be accessed on the mode dial, so that preferred camera settings can be retrieved quickly, while ten additional custom settings can be stored on the camera. The separate drive dial also provides instant access to a selection of popular modes, including continuous shooting, bracketing and self timer. It is therefore fast and simple to select the ideal settings for a shot, meaning that there is no delay in capturing the perfect image.

Through Samsung's innovative i-Function system, advanced camera settings such as shutter speed and aperture can be accessed with the touch of one button. For more experienced photographers, i-Function Plus lets users are able to reprogram existing buttons with their preferred and frequently used settings.

The powerful new SEF 580A TTL external flash with a Guide Number of 58 makes it simple to capture perfect shots, allowing light to travel further and wider. The high speed flash sync mode allows for flash with shutter speeds faster than 1/200 of a second, ideal for brightly lit scenes with selective depth of field. Additionally, this new flash supports wireless strobe sync, bringing an added dimension to images with light that looks natural.

Premium and Professional Quality in any Situation: 16-50mm F2-2.8 S ED OIS Lens

The new Samsung 16-50mm F2-2.8 S ED OIS lens allows photographers of all skill levels to achieve professional image quality through a myriad of new and advanced features. It is the first Premium “S” Series lens, which signifies end-users will be given superior optical-technology to meet their photography needs. Its versatile standard zoom angle of view allows for flexibility to take photos at frequently desired angles and vantage points, without limitations on what is captured. The 16-50mm has an extremely bright aperture (F2.0 at 16mm; F2.8 at 50mm) making it the brightest 3X zoom among equivalent class lenses, adding-value to the overall picture-taking experience and imaging results. Splash and dust proof, this lens is designed to deliver quality results even in extreme, harsh conditions.

This lens features an Ultra-Precise Stepping Motor (UPSM), improved from the conventional Stepping Motor (SM), that is 3X more precise in its ability to control and focus on subjects. Coupled with its optical image stabilizer and combination of three aspherical (ASP) lenses, two extra-low dispersion (ED) lenses, and two eXreme High Refractive (XHR) lenses, the 16-50mm F2-2.8 S ED OIS has the ability to take a steady shot and produce an exceptional photo with ultimate clarity and detail. The combination of these advanced elements work together to enhance the results from the lens. The ASP lenses reduce and nearly eliminate spherical aberration, whereas the ED elements reduce chromatic aberration and the XHR allows for a more compact and light lens.

Excellent Imagery Everyday: 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 Power Zoom ED OIS lens

The new 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 Power Zoom ED OIS lens was designed for everyday use as well as for photographers who often travel and desire quality and compactness. It is lightweight, weighing only 111g with a compact 31mm frame and a modern and simple design. It is available in two colors (Black and White). With an outstanding wide angle optical performance, the 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 Power Zoom ED OISlens includes Silent Auto Focusing and a low zooming noise, excellent for capturing video which is clear and undisturbed by the noise of the mechanism.

A vital feature of the new lens is its quick control made possible through an Electro zoom with a seesaw type button. This unique feature allows photographers to simply click to zoom and take a photo from any view or angle, similar to a compact camera experience. The smooth zooming operation, applied from the high-end camcorder not only creates superb pictures, but enables high-quality videos. The intuitive operating mechanism, i-Function and UPSM help to take more precise pictures, while the Optical Image Stabilization reduces the blur associated with camera movement adding to the appeal of this lens.

Samsung NX system topic https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12210/samsung-nx-system-topic Mon, 19 Jan 2015 20:05:50 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 12210@/talks/discussions Some short thoughts about my experience (and talks to members) with Samsung NX system.

Now Samsung NX system is underdog with great value. Something that Pentax years ago.

Interesting bodies

  • Samsung NX1 - video king for APS-C cameras, current top camera
  • Samsung NX30 - ex top camera, available for $460 and up on ebay . It is hard to get such good camera with EVF and AMOLED screen for so cheap in any other system.
  • Samsung NX20 - early top camera, available for $260 and up on ebay . Still with good EVF and AMOLED. FullHD video and Wi-Fi. Steal.
  • Samsung NX300. Little gem. Amazing build, AMOLED tilting screen. From around $280 on ebay.

Optics

Most optics is of very good quality, quite cheap, except one ultrazoom (but it is very ok for video).

Best ones: 16-50mm F2-2.8 zoom, 60mm macro, 85mm F1.4 S, 30mm F2, 12-24mm wide zoom, 16-50mm PZ lens.

Samyang and Rokinon optics can be got with good discount with NX mount (check $235 35mm F1.4 I posted in NX1 topic).

Connectivity

Samsung is known for best connectivity options and very good Wi-Fi speed (as they are pro in implementing Wi-Fi in smartphones).

Firmware

Bodies before NX1 can have small issues with video compression. It is BaseLine profile, 1 ReFrame only, no CABAC. Ala GH1.

Software

Samsung cameras come with full fledged Adobe Lightroom (except newest NX500). Take it into account also, looking at the prices.

Sound

On some bodies it is no mic input as well as headphones out.

Yet unusual hack to this exist, you will need small Samsung EM10 microphone.
It has headphone output and internal ADC. If you want to attach dynamic or electret lavalier mikes you'll need to rip it apart and solder wires to the original capsules.

Samsung NX Mount Protocol https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12663/samsung-nx-mount-protocol- Tue, 24 Mar 2015 19:59:45 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 12663@/talks/discussions NX protocol is based on SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) communication.
NX body is set as Master and Lens is set as Slave

Pin Out

  • Pin 1: SPI Clock - Body (Master) generates clock signal to synchronize SPI communication. (Normal High)
  • Pin 2: SPI MOSI - (Master Out Slave In) Body sends data to Lens. (Normal Low)
  • Pin 3: SPI MISO - (Master In Slave Out) Lens sends data to Body. (Normal High)
  • Pin 4: AF Tick - This line is used only when AF is performed. This tick commands lens report the lens status (AF location, moving status, etc). (Normal High)
  • Pin 5: Lens Data Ready - (Normal High) Lens set this line LOW when lens has data ready to send Body. Once this signal set LOW by lens, body will generate SPI Clock, and Lens will transfer prepared data with the clock signal.
  • Pin 6: GND (0V)
  • Pin 7: Power (3.3V) - It is a power source for microcontroller in Lens.
  • Pin 8: Power (5.0V) * It is a power source for motors in Lens (AF and Aperture motor)

Samsung NX1 UHD4k vs 1080p - Rolling Shutter and Resolution Crash Test https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12377/samsung-nx1-uhd4k-vs-1080p-rolling-shutter-and-resolution-crash-test Fri, 13 Feb 2015 08:09:01 +0000 eddavid 12377@/talks/discussions

This is a test shooting the Samsung NX1 in UHD mode 23.98 FPS and 1080p 23.98 FPS - both in PRO mode to see how it handles rolling shutter and resolution loss. My test chart was one of those magazine insert things that always fall out of your magazine when you are trying to read in the subway and someone comes up to you and says, "hey you dropped your thingy." and they want you to pick it up because it's littering but they say it like maybe you want to hold onto the magazine insert, to avoid confrontation. I wonder if the world still needs these magazine insert thingies? Maybe it's time to stop littering, magazine people? Actually I shouldn't be so hard on the magazine people, I love magazines and I need them to keep existing and if it requires them to have these annoying insert thingies, let them be. I need to accept other people for who they are. I am working on this. But anyway back to the test.

I transcoded using wondershare at -25 contrast - sorry guys I can’t figure out iffmpeg!

Shot at 800 ASA, 1/60 shutter, 23.98 FPS

Shot with Leica R 50mm f/1.4 lens at F stop 2.8. Focued on center text with zoom tool.

I lit it with some weird LED light so that it would flicker a lot and cause even more rolling shutter shenanigans - to see what's going on with the rolling shutter from a scientific perspective. But I'm not a scientist, I'm mostly just faking it till I make it.

Shot at Gamma DR with master per up +10 and contrast down -3.

Then I increased resolution 200% then 300% then 400%

Results - the rolling shutter is so much better in 1080p mode, and the loss of resolution is there - is it enough to bother me ? No, actually I’m not that into resolution anyway - I think rolling shutter is a much greater evil.

How does 1080p affect the image beyond rolling shutter and sharpness - highlight handling looks similar from this weak test. Color looks similar too. Less resolution and maybe edges less defined might make the image more organic and smoother.

Woo hoo

I think we can help make the world love the little Samsung NX1. The little engine that could. The outsider. Next test - Sony A7S 4k to Odyssey 7q in Full frame mode vs Samsung NX1 in 1080p mode. Resolution and rolling shutter and dynamic range and highlight handling.

There's a separate switch between stills and video so while in video mode it looks like you use the mode dial to switch from P to Av, Tv, Mv and TAv modes. There's also a headphone jack to monitor audio.

And most intriguingly, the leaked specs suggest 14bit RAW output.

Pentax K30 is weather sealed, has additional external buttons, and has two e-dials: a first in an intro-level Pentax DSLR.

The K-30 has a clear glass pentaprism viewfinder with nearly 100% coverage, and 0.92x magnification.
Quite unusual for entry level bodies.

  • 11-point autofocus
  • 100% viewfinder coverage
  • AA or rechargeable batteries
  • Scrteen - 3-inch VGA with 921,000 dots
