Panasonic Announces the Firmware Update Program for LUMIX DMC-GH4

NEWARK, N.J., Sept. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

Panasonic announces the new firmware update program for the LUMIX Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) camera DMC-GH4. The firmware will be released to enhance the performance and controllability of the camera, featuring new 4K Photo Mode.

The 4K Photo is a new way of photography that Panasonic is proposing. It encourages users to capture the spur-of-the-moment in high resolution 4K photo by cropping out a designated frame from the 4K video. With the new firmware, it is easier to get a 4K photo by using the 4K Photo Mode. Once selecting the 4K Photo Mode, recording format / picture quality setting / brightness level are automatically set to the optimum parameters for photo shooting. Users can record high quality video either in 4:3, 3:2 or even 1:1 aspect ratios in addition to 16:9 – all can provide a still image with 8-megapixel equivalent resolution. Each JPEG image cropped out of the video footage complies with EXIF just as a normal still picture. While recording the 4K video in 4K Photo Mode, it is possible to mark the designated portion by just pressing the [Fn1] button. This can reduce postproduction work for searching the spur-of-the-moment worth cropping out. Moreover, 4K video can be recorded continuously with Loop Rec function which keeps saving the 5 newest 2-minute video files. Users can patiently wait for the perfect photo opportunity to come as long as they want keep the camera recording without worrying about the capacity of the SDXC/SDHC Memory Card*1.

There are more functional upgrades such as the addition of 4K video recording in 23.98p (MP4, AAC) and enhancement of controllability over ISO setting or the amount of flash emission. Also, the DMC-GH4 now expands its connectivity with external equipment. For example, the PC software "USB Tether*2" enables remote camera control (shooting, setting or image data transfer) by PC via USB.

The PHOTOfunSTUDIO 9.5PE and Panasonic Image App for iOS/Android will also be updated to support these functional upgrades.
The new firmware program is scheduled to be released with more information in detail at the Panasonic LUMIX Support Site at http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/ in the beginning of October, 2014.

Trying to change a few GH4 settings. Need some help https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11432/trying-to-change-a-few-gh4-settings.-need-some-help Mon, 29 Sep 2014 06:15:37 +0000 nosignal 11432@/talks/discussions I've had my GH4 for about a month now and I'm loving it overall, but I've noticed a few things I would like to change, if possible. I've not been very lucky in getting these things changed though.

I'll Include pictures of each item.

  1. There is some sort of square in the middle of the screen. I believe it has to do with the focus assisting. Is there a way to get rid of this square? I understand it's purpose, but I think it gets in my way, especially with the touch screen becuse it can move.

  2. The AF box in the lower right hand corner. Again, I understand why it's there and what it does. But I don't always want that option available. It's just taking up real estate on my display.

  3. My guides and info dissapear from the display after 1 minute of sitting. Is there any way to keep them displayed?

  4. (no picutre included) This is one I've kind of grown to enjoy, but is there any way to remove the side quick menu from the display?

I'd appreciate any help! Thanks!

GH4 Lenses For Documentary https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11430/gh4-lenses-for-documentary Sun, 28 Sep 2014 18:35:28 +0000 Pino 11430@/talks/discussions So, I have a documentary shoot upcoming, first doc as a shooter. My background is more directing, producing on the corporate, but began shooting on the GH2 three years ago. Now I've moved to a GH4, need to think through some lens purchases, and could use some advice. The doc will focus on college students as they retrace steps of the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march. Shot will be single camera and a soundman. GH4 on a Marauder rig. Location interviews on the fly. Lots of b-roll. Storyline still developing.

I own a Panasonic 12-35 OIS and a Nikon 50mm 1.4 I'm trying to debate the merits of going all native M43 or Speedbooster/Nikon mount. I'd like to get something really wide and fast, along with two primes for interviews. Do I go Tokina 11-6, Sigma 18-35, and two Voigtlander primes (25mm &50mm) with a Speedbooster? Or should I go Panny 7-14mm, SLR Magic 10mm & 25mm? I could use some input and advice. Appreciate the help.

My question is can the cards I have been using the extreme 95 san disk cards handle the 4k footage without write errors and spanning issues. also I imsagine a 64 gig card would only habdle about a half an hour of 4k footage and this doesn't seem practical. anyone who is currently running a gh4 and filmimg in 4k with subsequent 1080 renders, any tips would be much appreciated. Should I expect the cards Im using to work the same way with the gh4 in 1080 60? Second question Id like to be able to use one of my Gh2s as a B ROLL Cam. What would the best setting be on the Gh2 for working with the 1080 60 Gh4 on a vegas pro timeline? Thanks in advance for your input.

This is my latest short film. Shot on a GH3 with Canon EF L Primes (from my 60D days) and a manual aperture adapter (wish the new speedbooster was out earlier, and wish the GH3 had the focus peaking feature like the GH4 does).

I like the Vivid setting in the GH3, the blacks look good after grading. This wasn't aimed as a cinema production, instead TV with a slight filmic quality!

Few things I would of changed, would have lost the massive DOF to one of my interviews. Broke my lens hood on the Canon 100mm f2.8 IS lens and found I had some casting/refraction on certain shots without it.

GH4: No Extended ISO Steps in Video Mode? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11223/gh4-no-extended-iso-steps-in-video-mode Mon, 08 Sep 2014 06:15:45 +0000 bluehabit 11223@/talks/discussions On the GH4, in video mode, you are very limited in the range of ISO steps: 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400. With the GH3 you could use extended ISO steps in video mode; however, with the GH4 extended ISO is not available in video mode only in other modes such as manual stills. Is anyone else disappointed by this? It feels like a step backward from the GH3 & very awkward having to jump to ISO 800 when I know I could make do with a lower ISO. The new Fenchel & Janisch review of this camera points this out as well.

Curious on everyone's thoughts.

Panasonic GM-1, good for green screen work? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11155/panasonic-gm-1-good-for-green-screen-work Fri, 29 Aug 2014 14:09:23 +0000 thesaifking 11155@/talks/discussions Hey everybody I'm looking for a camera to use at my job that may occasionally need green screen footage.

I have been using my own equipment (hacked panasonic gh2) and have awesome results, but I'm drafting a budget up for equipment that should already be on hand at the site, not my own personal stuff. All I need now is to add a camera.

I take a lot of product photography and sometimes film people working, the GH2 seemed good for that. But I used a high bit rate on my videos, will using a GM-1 have problematic results if the bit rate is lower? I know it takes awesome video that's close to the GH3, both cameras which have better dynamic range than my gh2, but will Ultra Key work just as well in Adobe premiere using GM-1 footage?

I'm aiming for the GM-1 since it's cheaper than the GH3 and good form factor. But would it be better if I used a different camera?

Thanks!

Leica Camera AG, Wetzlar, presents a new model in the Leica rangefinder camera range. With the Leica M-P photographers can be ready to shoot anytime, so that the “decisive moment” is never missed. Thanks to the large buffer size of 2 GB it is now possible to shoot up to 24 images in full continuous speed of 3 frames per second, so the focus is on you and your photographs.

Based on the otherwise identical Leica M, the Leica M-P offers all the technical advantages of the Leica M-System and several additional features, such as the enlarged buffer memory. The ‘P’ in the name of this camera indicates the particularly discreet and enduring design concept with which the Leica M-P joins the line of Leica M-Cameras conceived especially to fulfil the needs of professional photographers.

The buffer memory capacity of the Leica M-P has been increased to 2 GB – twice the size of that of the Leica M. This guarantees that the Leica M-P is immediately ready to shoot in almost all situations. This is a particular advantage when shooting pictures in rapid succession, as the image data needs to be buffered directly after the shutter is released, before writing to the SD memory card. This means that users can now react to events with even greater spontaneity to capture the decisive moment in almost every photographic situation.

In terms of design, the Leica M-P is based on the typical characteristics of the Leica rangefinder system and focuses in particular on robustness and a long product lifespan. The use of an extremely scratch-resistant sapphire crystal cover for its LCD monitor is one example of this. This material is so hard that it can only be worked with special diamond cutting tools and is one of the world’s hardest materials. In practical terms, the sapphire glass LCD cover is almost unbreakable and offers resistance to many kinds of wear and stresses, meaning that the camera is ideally equipped for many years of use. Thanks to an anti-reflective coating on both sides of the cover glass, image reviewing is now even better, even in difficult lighting conditions, and allows photographers to assess and check every subject with optimum precision both before and after exposure.

The unobtrusive and minimalistic look of the Leica M-P provides even greater discretion in decisive shooting situations. Many photographers who already use Leica M-Cameras actually tape over the red Leica logo to make their work as unobtrusive as possible. For precisely this reason, this identifying feature has been omitted from the new rangefinder camera. Instead, the top plate of the camera is engraved with a subtle Leica script.

Other new details of the camera include a frame selection lever with which bright-line frames for six different focal lengths can be projected into the viewfinder to simulate subject framing. The corresponding frames are shown in pairs for the focal lengths 28 and 90 mm, 35 and 135 mm or 50 and 75 mm. This avoids the need to change lenses to assess suitable subject framing, offers greater creative freedom and allows photographers to concentrate fully on composing their pictures.

Unfortunately, it was 'body only' therefore I had to wait until a separately bought lens arrived before I could use/test it. All photos/videos have a very strong red/dark pink tint - this is the same as through the LCD/viewfinder.

Photo 1 is just a straight (but resized) photo. The filing cabinet is actually a light coloured wood framed with a light grey shutter thing. Photo 2 - White-balanced using a white card/paper (again, resized).

Any thought? I sort of suspect it's had some IR/infrared conversion - which wasn't detailed in the Ebay listing.

The biggest reason I'm wondering is because it's been confirmed that VFR mode reduces the GH4's resolution to somewhere between 1080p and 720p. However, by using anamorphic lenses you would have to crunch the vertical pixels in post, therefor giving you more vertical resolution. This doesn't help with the horizontal resolution, but I'm sure it would help with the "softness" most people notice in VFR mode. Since we are talking about improving the resolution though, it would make sense for someone to try it out with some legitimate anamorphic lenses (not Jimmy rigged projector lenses from the 70's). Think it might be possible?
