What would be the crop factor be for a Nikon Dx lens on a GH2. I know a standard Nikon 35mm lens is X2 crop factor on a GH2. A Nikon Dx body with a standard 35mm Nikon lens is X1.5
I nabbed a Nikon 10.5mm Dx lens from work and bought an adapter to work with G lens and wanted to know what the 10.5mm ends up being. I thought it might be around the 13mm mark.
I have always been a Nikon guy since a kid so have many many manual and G Nikon lens and bellows and extension tubes oh and work has a good amount of lens i can use at the weekends.
Thanks

GH? What I'd like to have in a DSLR or Hybrid camera https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3260/gh-what-id-like-to-have-in-a-dslr-or-hybrid-camera Fri, 18 May 2012 14:34:30 +0000 shian 3260@/talks/discussions Here's what I'd like to have in a GH? (Granted I know I'm dreaming)

Depending on how this new AVC codec works: forget 4K, gimme 4:4:4 or at least 4:2:2 1080p at around 80Mb/s native, and 120fps option. And at least a flat, if not RAW, option. (2k is nice...but I'm a realist. I'd rather it be Prores as well, but again....realist) I know the current sensor won't do this, so obviously a new sensor but with the same great quality of the GH2 sensor, hopefully minus the moire.

Give me 2 to 4 more stops of DR (Even 2 would be HUGE!)

better I/O (I don't need xlr's, just a way to get audio in, and a headphone jack)

A clean 3200 ISO (6400 would be nice, but I don't really need it)

Built in selectable ND

False Color or some sort of waveform monitor instead of a histogram.

Better EVF (one that's more flexible/ adjustable as far as angle)

And if it performs as well in terms of sharpness and clarity as the GH2, and if VK and Driftwood can hack it up to a stable 220 M/bits, I'd have one hell of a camera, maybe the BEST HD production Camera on the planet. It would likely be the size of a 5D or a Scarlet, but I'm okay with that. the GH2 is TINY.

I'd pay $3000 for it, easy. (I know I'm dreaming, cuz its worth more than that) I would use it as a C-cam on every shoot. ( I can't now cuz, most of the stuff I get hired to do has a high DR, and you have to light differently for the GH2 or sacrifice detail in either the highlights or shadows) While my guys are operating A and B, I'd be running around with it getting extra coverage. Hell, I'd probably just convince the producers to shoot the whole show with GH?s.

I know most TV guys still wouldn't use it cuz no Genlock, but with the multi-cam functionality of the newer NLEs, you don't really need it anymore, unless you're doing live TV.

sigh dream time over

Ban all Photography?Really? How will you implement that? What if I or anyone wants to take a picture of the subway or of our friends or your cameras?

Isn't this a PUBLIC place funded by Glasgow commuters and tax payers? I really do wonder what you think we will be doing with our photographs and films SPT?

As long as you don't invade someone privacy/personal space or, if you wish to take a photograph of a stranger just kindly ask then if it's okay with them to do so then then it should be okay to take whatever photograph or film you want. If they think playjg the whole terrorist card thing on this i think it's absolutley preposterous. If someone gets offended buy you having a mobile phone/camera or suspects you of infringing there personal space then WTF you are recording US too so you have the footage there to review if this is the case!!!!.

Anyone from the public having a complaint with someone for having their smartphones/cameras can report this when they leave the subway station and have the footage (video/photographs) reviewed to see if it's acutely fact. Most times you will find this wont be the case. I have seen 100's of people with their phones and camera on the subway and never felt threatened by anyone with a phone or DSLR or seen anyone be threatened by a film maker or photographer.

Don't know but with the number of smart phones out there (shit loads probably too many)that have wireless connectivity how will they police that? Your probably safer with a DSLR videographer/photographer as he's got less connectivity and is more likely to getnuisance fae bams !!! We are more likely to capture evidence than obstructing the law!

Most importantly, we are hosting the Common Wealth Games and you really expect tourists not to to take fucking pictures? Get fucking REAL.. Anyway it's summer time :-) time to get on a bike and see the daylight SPT

Running out of resources https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3212/running-out-of-resources Tue, 15 May 2012 01:50:05 +0000 brianluce 3212@/talks/discussions The world's biodiversity is down 30 percent since the 1970s, according to a new report, with tropical species taking the biggest hit. And if humanity continues as it has been, the picture could get bleaker.

Humanity is outstripping the Earth's resources by 50 percent — essentially using the resources of one and a half Earths every year, according to the 2012 Living Planet Report, produced by conservation agency the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Colby Loucks, the director of conservation sciences at WWF, compared humanity to bad houseguests.

Related: Most mammals won't flee climate change fast enough

Burning through resources The biannual Living Planet report is designed to call attention to the Earth's "invisible economy," said Emily McKenzie, the director of the WWF's Natural Capital Program. Natural resources — and the rate at which humans burn through them — rarely appear on policymakers' balance sheets, McKenzie said.

But humanity is essentially in debt to Mother Earth, conservationists find. As of 2008, the most recent year for which data is available, humans were outstripping Earth's biocapacity by 50 percent.

Biocapacity is the amount of renewable resources, land, and waste absorption (such as sinks for carbon dioxide) the Earth can provide. In other words, it takes the planet 1.5 years to restore what humanity burns through in a year. (The organization Global Footprint Network marks "Earth Overshoot Day" every year to draw attention to how fast humans use natural resources. In 2011, Earth Overshoot Day fell on Sept. 27, the day humans used up Earth's annual resources.)

The report scientists calculated the world's hogs when it comes to resources (called the ecological footprint ) by determining each nation's productive land capacity and comparing it to the actual population and consumption per person. The United States has the fifth-largest ecological footprint of any nation on Earth, according to the report.

In order from most to least, the top 10 greediest resource users per capita are:

  1. Qatar
  2. Kuwait
  3. United Arab Emirates
  4. Denmark
  5. United States
  6. Belgium
  7. Australia
  8. Canada
  9. The Netherlands
  10. Ireland

Struggling species

All of this resource use is taking a toll. The Living Planet report also tracks biodiversity and species populations across the globe. This year's report details a startling loss of biodiversity around the globe: A loss of 30 percent of biodiversity on average, meaning a major decline in the number of different species of plants, animals and other organisms. Temperate species are doing relatively well, Loucks said, but tropical species have declined by 60 percent since the 1970s. Freshwater tropical species are the hardest-hit, having declined by 70 percent in that time period.

Investing in film https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3188/investing-in-film Sat, 12 May 2012 07:14:27 +0000 brianluce 3188@/talks/discussions http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/28/your-money/filmmaking-as-an-alternative-investment.html

FOR most people, investing has not been fun these last few years. At best, it has been stressful. Bucks Investing With Your Heart, as Well as Your Head

Have you ever followed your passion with an investment? How did that work out? Can you offer advice to others tempted to do this?

Paul Sullivan writes about strategies that the wealthy use to manage their money and their overall well-being.

But there are investments that have nothing to do with stocks or bonds or real estate that may be at least enjoyable if not always moneymaking. I’ve come up with about a half-dozen, and over the next few weeks, I plan to explore some of them, including investments as different as horses and restaurants. My goal is to see how people do this successfully — or whether they have a broader definition of success than just making money.

This week, I’m going to look at films, given that the influential Tribeca Film Festival is under way; it runs through Sunday.

Investing in a movie seems a risky proposition. Movie studios lose tens of millions of dollars on films almost every week. But for some amateurs, being part of the film festival circuit, let alone making it to a big Hollywood premiere, can be glamorous. For a serious investor, with more at stake, there are many ways to make money in films that have little to do with box-office success.

Dennis Wallestad, chief financial officer of the Treasury services division of JPMorgan Chase, said he wanted to back a promising filmmaker after spending over a decade as a benefactor to David M. Lenz, an artist who gained wide acclaim in 2006 when he won a competition at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.

He met the filmmaker Nate Taylor because their wives knew each other. On the surface, they seem nothing alike. “I’m a C.P.A. from Milwaukee and as white bread as they come,” Mr. Wallestad said. “He’s a goth with a mohawk.”

Yet after many meetings, Mr. Wallestad put up $300,000 to make the film “Forgetting the Girl.” He also ran all aspects of the film’s finances and whittled away waste as he does in his day job. “I wanted to help someone else,” Mr. Wallestad said. “My covenant with Nate is, You do the art and I’ll take care of the business.”

Earlier this month, “Forgetting The Girl” won the audience award at the SoHo International Film Festival, and Mr. Wallestad said that had attracted interest from two dozen distributors

Fusion as energy source. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3128/fusion-as-energy-source.- Sun, 06 May 2012 21:50:53 +0000 brianluce 3128@/talks/discussions Well, maybe this time they really got it. http://scienceblogs.com/casaubonsbook/2012/04/will_quantum_fusion_save_the_d.php?utm_source=networkbanner&utm_medium=link

The Astrophysicist, when he has time, will have something to say about his reading of the physics of the material Tom Whipple sums up.

This situation however seems to be changing following a lengthy interview with a fellow out in Berkeley, California by the name of Robert Godes of Brillouin Energy. He has been working in this field for the last ten years and says that he not only has a reliable heat-producing device, but also understands the physics behind it - which he calls the Quantum Fusion Hypothesis. He says that this theory of just how low-energy nuclear reactions work has allowed the development of a device which produces heat immediately and reliably. Most interestingly, Godes says he has shared his insights with scientists at the Los Alamos Nuclear Laboratories and SRI International, one of the leading US laboratories investigating the phenomenon. He says that both have verified that his theory does indeed work and that they can now produce heat from hydrogen every time they try.

Godes' hypothesis is interesting for those with even a smattering of physics in their background. First of all, he holds that the heat which is coming from infusing hydrogen into nickel or palladium is not coming from "cold fusion" in the classic sense of the term. It is not a deuterium fusing with deuterium reaction as takes place in the sun or H-bombs and which requires extremely high energies.

What seems to be happening in this new kind of fusion is that when hydrogen is "loaded" into nickel or palladium and subjected to the proper kind of an electromagnetic pulse, the hydrogen nucleus which is a positively charged proton acquires an electron which turns it into a low energy free neutron. Now a low energy free neutron is something very nice to have for it quickly combines with other protons to form deuterium, tritium and finally quadrium. The quadrium only lasts for an instant before undergoing a process called beta decay turning it into helium. This is where Einstein and E = MC2 comes in. The beta decay of quadrium results in a loss of mass which is turned into heat. If all this pans out as claimed, it could be one of the most important secrets of nature that has ever been discovered, for our energy problems are over.

Help! Broken camera? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3092/help-broken-camera Thu, 03 May 2012 09:18:54 +0000 samstjohn 3092@/talks/discussions Hi

I was in love with the GH2 when i bought it in Dec 2011. Now, 6 months down the line, i'm pretty much heart broken.

I bought it to hack. I have put three hacks on it so far, driftwoods AquAmotion. EOS Unified, and EOS Vanilla.

I've had it playing up on me a while now. Shot some documentary stuff on it and started noticing these weird things happening when i looked at the converted files (MTS converted via FCP log and transfer function)

1st, its grainy as hell. Even shooting outside at ISO 160 with a stop of about 5.6 with a 0.50 shutter is grainy.

Im also getting these strange banding issues, colours (purple/blue) appear on the screen for no reason.

Whats happening? I managed to shoot a music video in February on it with the AquAmotion hack no problem (apart from graininess on his face on one of the beginning shots) >

I rung Panasonic this morning and they said that because i bought it off ebay it wouldn't be covered under warranty. So i can pay for a company down in London to do a repair on it.

I tried putting the firmware 1.1 back on to it and unhacking the camera, but it says 'no picture to play' on the screen when i put a SD card in with the fw (card formatted in camera, put into computer, GH2__V11.bin put onto card, play button pressed on camera)

I'm really gutted about this. I feel like my camera is kinda useless to me now, i cant trust it to not play up on me, some stuff i shoot is fine, but alot of it is trashed by all the problems with it.

Also check this out, this was shot with two GH2. The Static was a unhacked camera, the handheld head and shoulders was with EOS Vanilla.

I feel like i shouldnt have touched a hack in the first place.

What do i do? Is this a hack problem? Is my camera broken? How can i unhack it succesfully? How do i get the camera to just function normally? i dont even care if its hacked or not, i just wanna be able to shoot with it.

Please help!

iTunes hates my PC https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3050/itunes-hates-my-pc Sun, 29 Apr 2012 17:30:30 +0000 LPowell 3050@/talks/discussions My Windows 7 x64 workstation recently crashed (black screen of death) and I had to restore the OS to an image saved by Windows Home Server a few weeks ago. Most everything fit back into place without much grief, except for one little thing:

iTunes

Actually, the iTunes app still worked after the restore, but it nagged me about being a .version or two out of date. When I ran the iTunes installer, however, it refused to cooperate, passive-aggressively complaining that it was "interrupted", as if an unidentified force prevented it from completing its mission. I then tried to use the Windows Control Panel to uninstall the existing version of iTunes, and it refused to do that as well! (Right here, I'll just get it over with and say it out it loud: Fuck. You. Apple.)

After some research, I tried using the following resources to scour the dregs of iTunes out of my system:

  1. Downloaded and ran the Microsoft Fix It utility to manually uninstall iTunes, QuickTime, MobileMe, Apple Software Updater, etc.
  2. Deleted all remaining iTunes and Quicktime folders from Program Files folders.
  3. Deleted all remaining iTunes and Quicktime folders from all users' AppData folders.
  4. Used ResEdit to delete all iTunes, iPod, and Quicktime keys from the Windows System Registry.
  5. Rebooted the computer and verified that no trace of the string "iTunes" could be found anywhere.

Then I ran the QuickTime 7.7 installer for Windows. This successfully reinstalled the last known reliable version of QuickTime on my system.

And once more I tried to install iTunes. Result? "iTunes installer Interrupted."

Then I realized what I was missing:

  • No more dialogs pestering me to make iTunes the default media player.
  • No more random interruptions by the iTunes software updater.
  • No more unchecking the insidious "iCloud" download Apple keeps trying to push.
  • I can now recharge my iPhone without iTunes trying to take over my PC!

...sometimes small blessings come in unexpected packages :)

Hi Everyone... if this should be somewhere else please move...

Considering the power of bespoke coding, I have embarked on learning a bit of Javascript. Thought that I would share this find: http://www.codecademy.com

Basically a free tuition website with a life Javascript console with progressive tests.

Considering that this is @VK's main area (expert coder) I thought that either he or anyone else could share their thoughts on this or any other web sites like it. It has been a long time coming for me to get off my lazy ass and learn even basic coding but I am finding it very rewarding and progressing very fast... (However I already have a grasp of programming fundamentals - not total beginner).

Any thoughts? Especially considering how popular Python Scripting and many other languages are becoming this is almost needed now, (at least a very good understanding of the Terminal - Windows, Mac, or Linux).

What I like about the idea is that it makes learning more like a competition and very social...

Cheers, A
