For those who don't know - Ambarella SOCs are primarily used in small HD cameras like the Go Pro Hero 3 and Hero 3+ cams...

Seems like you can get quite a lot for quite a little with these cams, and they are running embedded linux. I think there is a wide open space here for a Ptool like setup tool to be developed, and for people to experiment with these - doing things like adding interchangeable lenses, and modifying to put multiple cameras on small Quad and Hexacopters for instance.

Some of them even seem to have GPS and other data logging.

Curious which one is the TOP camera in terms of best chipset used, best sensor, and highest achievable recording bit rate with modification.

Here is one example - but there seem to be a million out there:

How to record (and monitor) any internal sound on a mac easy and free? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9047/how-to-record-and-monitor-any-internal-sound-on-a-mac-easy-and-free Tue, 10 Dec 2013 21:06:11 +0000 maxr 9047@/talks/discussions Recently I desperately - oohh c'won exaggeration, buhhhh, hung him - needed to record something coming from the web browser, I normally use other more stupid (time consuming) ways. This one I thought was worth sharing

4 simple steps

1 - Download Soundflower

2 - Install. Restart. Go to system preferences/sound/ and select sound flower both from input and output
alternatively and much faster you can just press the volume icon in the menu bar while pressing Alt.

3 - In your sound flower applications folder launch Soundflowerbed, in the icon in system menu bar select Soundflower (2ch) output;
you can further tweak settings below, but it is really up to you

4 - Launch Quicktime X, then File/New Audio Recording and from little triangle at right select sound flower input and quality.
Orrrr you can use instead Quicktime pro version, as will allow you to record uncompressed happy audio unicorn files, yeahhh

Extra tit, I mean tip for monitoring or realtime line input
This is the simplest and free also: RogueAmoeba's Line In

And because I really don't want you to remain with unhealthy curiosity, this is the thing I wanted to record :P

it reminded me of a japanese Maria Peszek

Interview Series on Scoring History https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9002/interview-series-on-scoring-history Sat, 07 Dec 2013 15:59:45 +0000 thepalalias 9002@/talks/discussions Support The Arts for the Price of A Movie Ticket Next year I will be launching a group of (in-person) seminars, lectures and a YouTube series with one thing in common: part of the the profits gets donated to educational programs for arts or music, here the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley. I want to help support creative education, both directly and indirectly. If you want to support, there are four ways you can help - so PM me if you are interested in any one of them and I will keep you updated!

1) We need interview guests! One of the series is called “High Scoring”. This is going to feature interviews with game and film scoring composers talking about the history and craft of scoring. Far from the usual discussion emphasizing creative process or tools or “industry realities”, these interviews will actually look at musical influences and changes in scoring approach over time. The continuity of composing for media. Following this discussion, the audience will also have chance to participate in a Q & A.

Several people have already volunteered to be guests and all I can say is “thank you!” for your desire to both help the arts and to help expand the perception of what we do as composers. It is my hope that the series will help both help to give a sense to the greater public of the history of what we do (in much the same way that music history classes do for classical composition) while providing a unique perspective to those of us already in the scoring community. Admission should be only a little more than the price of a movie ticket.

2) You can come to one the interviews, lectures or classes. It currently looks like they will be held in North Hollywood and tickets will likely be $15 to $25 depending on the event.

3) You can help us gauge interest in terms of the potential classes and the best schedule (for instance, would weekday evening or weekend evening classes be better?)

Here are some likely candidates (but feel free to suggest your own): - “High Scoring” The History and Culture of Film & VG Scoring - Supporting Your Child’s Creativity - Intro to Photography and Video - Composing and Producing - How To Communicate Better With Your Clients and Customers - Cultivating Creativity - Developing Expertise: The Keys to Learning Effectively

4) We will be launching a YouTube series in conjunction with “High Scoring” and possibly other courses as well. That means if you want to donate time or labor to any of the related areas (recording, filming, editing) it will be greatly appreciated. The more help we get, the more content we can create in a short period of time and the more attention we can bring to our craft.

5) We will need to get word of mouth out! Even if you can’t help directly or attend in person, chances are you know someone that would want to come to the seminars or classes or at least would want to watch the videos.

Anyway, this is something that I’ve been laying the groundwork for a long time and we only recently found a good venue for it. So I hope you’ll support us in making it happen any way that you can. I feel like we can really help make a difference, both for our peers and for the children that will soon be following in our footsteps.

So if you’re interested, please PM me or e-mail me at per@perlichtman.com. Thank you.

LIFE STORIES https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8972/life-stories Thu, 05 Dec 2013 03:13:26 +0000 gameb 8972@/talks/discussions Last night I was out in Bars here in Barcelona with a friend and we were into telling stories - life stories. A lot of fun. This morning I woke up and I thought, why not making an off-topic about stories in PV?

Here is one of mine to start with:

EX AND POP

It was in Berlin 9th of November 1989, the day the ''Mauer'' (the wall) came down. At this time I was a film student at the Berliner filmschool DFFB (German Film and TV Academy). We were living with my recently born son and my wife on top of the Berliner ''escape museum'' at Checkpoint Charlie. To maintain my studies and my family I was part time working as a camera assistant for the news department of the ZDF (German second TV channel), but the correspondent studio was based in the east side of Berlin. In the Ex DDR.

This morning I took my car, drove through the checkpoint, 500 meters further on, to our east side studios, smiled to the STASI (east Germanys secret service) guys just in front on the other side of the street, who were always starring at us through their windows, and went into the studio.

As you know, these were troubled days. Everybody in the studio knew, that in any moment something really heavy could happen. And it happened in the afternoon, when East German top politician Guenter Schabowski suddenly announced in this famous press conference that any citizen of East Germany (DDR) could freely cross from now on the border to the West.

The Sony Betacam cameras in 1989 didn't have an image stabilizer and the tripods were shaking as we were filming one of world human history most important moments.

In the evening with friends we went to Moritzplatz in Kreuzberg and were watching the crazy crowd coming out of the East. That was very very impressing and moving, how all these people came out from there, crossing over to their beloved free West, expecting from Capitalism who knows what dreams. Some of the people who were welcoming them on the West side were showing up Bananas, as an ironic symbol of what was waiting for them in the West (in East Germany you couldn't buy Bananas in these times). Berliners can be quite sarcastic.

But for me the thing that marked that very day forever happened later in the night: We went to our always Bar, the ''Ex and Pop'', between Kreuzberg and Schoeneberg, run by Harry Hass (''Harry Hate'', a genius writer of the dark Berliner scene) and his wife Evelyn. It was an emblematic Berliner Bar, in these times it was THE Bar. The first decoration when they had opened the Bar, has been burning the interior down and leaving it like this. The guys from the Bad Seeds (Nick Cave), Einstuerzende Neubauten, Die Haut etc., were oftentimes around, and playing there. So, that night the Ex and Pop was packed with people, everybody was there.

People were crying tears, when Bruno a neighbor and friend of the Bar, a mentally disabled man was singing old german songs accompanied by his accordion on the small stage. Bruno was found as a baby in the streets of Berlin right after the war (a ''Findelkind'') after his prostitute mother had abandoned him. He was raised in several orphanages for mentally disabled people. Some might remember him, he was the main actor in Werner Herzogs amazing film about that child that was found in a pig stall after having been living there abandoned for over 20 years, the film is called ‘’ The enigma of Kasper Hauser’’.

There couldn't be a better guy to express everybody’s overwhelming feelings of this moment.

And then it happened: the door opened and a dozen Skinheads dropped in and jumped on the stage, pushing Bruno aside. They were Nazi-Skins from the East! Can you imagine? They had just crossed the border for the first time in their life’s and were screaming, how happy they were, that they finally found a free place were they make ''real and true German music''!!!

And then they started to sing THEIR German songs...!

Oh, boy, they got it all wrong. For a few seconds people were shocked to freeze starring at this surrealistic scenery.

Tiny little Harry Hass was the first: he jumped over the Bar onto the stage, punched the main big Nazi-Skin guy straight into his face, through him down the stage and what happened then ended up in a huge and massive mess.

This was how I lived that day.

Creativity, Writer's Block, Morale and Photography https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8733/creativity-writers-block-morale-and-photography Sun, 10 Nov 2013 15:16:03 +0000 goanna 8733@/talks/discussions

I never saw an exceptionally good artist who didn't have his/her ups & downs

Photography, unlike most other forms of creative expression, is unique in that we can practise it spontaneously. Carrying a camera opens us to changing our plans because the light has changed. It encourages us to think visually.

As @trevmar advised me:

Time to smile again Goanna. You are not doomed. Pick up your cameras, go and take some photos of children enjoying themselves. Then forget those silly doomsayers, and start smiling again... from http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/comment/148503#Comment_148503

[As it happens, I did not have the cholesterol blues at the time, nor am I sure that trevmar was not speaking tongue-in-cheek]..

Still, it was good advice. In fact, carrying my camera is exactly what I've found myself doing more and more. I personally find I tend to plan video shots a little too much (I always shoot series of editable takes), so I cannot be as spontaneous as when I take stills. I find I don't need any ulterior motive or plans to exhibit; more and more I can photograph friends and family without them paying much attention to the lens. My audience for these stills is simply my family and friends, the same as for anybody else.

I live in a place of great natural beauty and get a lot of satisfaction from the effects of sunlight on rocks, translucence through leaves, or sunrises.

So, I'll just echo trevmar's advice and say keep your battery charged, a spare SD and carry a camera - even if it's just a phone.

Sensor charachter CCD CMOS NMOS what to buy? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8723/sensor-charachter-ccd-cmos-nmos-what-to-buy Sat, 09 Nov 2013 21:20:55 +0000 endotoxic 8723@/talks/discussions why are new sensors so plastic like???? they have no charactet like the old CCD school. I know they have better dinamic range but...still not color acurate. Seems to me that canon colorimetri and sensors are the most recognised by its image, having more charachter in them, so does the GH2 NMOS sensor and its 8 bit hacked color matrixes but shit i hate its banding.

RED ARRI and BMCC are plastic like image, yes you can postprocess, but still you have to post to take it.

Ikonoskop A-CamDIII was an exelent implementation of one kodak sensor. Its image its quiet amazing.

Panasonic on its HPX500 is a pefect example of nice image aquisition.

why do all now bother about Dynamic range and forget about color acuracy.

im soon diging my GH2 but i dont know what to buy... ikonoskop its too old now only 1080p ...........

I haven't seen anything so bad (pretentious, egotriptic, falsely engaging, totally lack of soul, boring, completely shallow, un-cinematic, frozen/stagnated, deprived of humour, etc.) and completely opposed to what I perceive as art, be it of any kind, in a long long time.

As I may be going crazy, does anyone else felt... some sort of something similar?

The Twins Days Festival is an annual gathering of twins and multiples in Twinsburg, Ohio. The Department of Plastic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University obtained comprehensive medical and lifestyle histories of twins by means of questionnaire at the festival between 2007 and 2010. Professional photographers took standardized digital photographs of the participants in outdoor booths with overhead shades

Photographs were size-matched using Mirror software (Canfield Scientific, Inc., Fairfield, N.J.). A panel of three blinded judges (H.C.O., B.A., and K.K.) was trained to evaluate wrinkles using the Lemperle Assessment Scale. Frontal views of each twin set were arranged side by side and randomized by a nonjudge (K.V.) so that the smoker or smoker of longer duration appeared sometimes on the left side and other times on the right.

My first smartphone: the world is 144p https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8615/my-first-smartphone-the-world-is-144p Thu, 31 Oct 2013 08:59:32 +0000 apefos 8615@/talks/discussions Until some days ago my cel phone was a sony ericson w200. bar design with number buttons, very small screen... great for mp3 and fm radio due to it's own design and because battery last all day long. I also used it's voice recorder a lot... and I never thought about getting a smartphone.

With the advent of wifi dslr, mainly the D5300, I started to think about to get a smartphone to see the live view from the camera when I get one with wifi, so I started a fun research...and I found a cheap used old model with enough screen resolution... and I got it for a low price...

Problems started when I did some attempts to connect using the 3G network, as the seller promissed me it would do, but it just got connection in 2G, and then I found it was a model from other country and it would never work in 3G in my city... so I went back to the seller and got a discount... good deal!

But then this became a "happy problem". Why? Because this makes me realize lots of people are still using 2G connections around the world and youtube just enabled the 144p around 80kbps for mobile slow connections and also pc slow connections.

I saw some videos in 144p in youtube using the 2G smartphone, and it was fun... I just remember the old days when internet was analog fixed phone lines with 24Kbps speed and online videos was just a dream.

(hey you, the three halloween batmen flying around... go away!!! Let me type... LOL ps.: did you run away from an atari emulator? Mouse over you!!!)

The 144p videos are just enough in the smartphone screen to understand and get involved with the video, to imerse in the history telling... and the fun thing: no need to worry about shallow dof...240p and 144p is so small to show shallow dof...

Oh God, if online videos are your goal, yes you must care about dynamic range, resolution, shallow dof, and so on, but this 144p thing just makes me realize the old school lesson: good script and good sound: that's what really matters!!!...

There are researchs on internet (you just need to google it) that shows the average internet speed for computers around the world is 5Mbps (this is enough for youtube 1080p streaming or 720p vimeo streaming, vimeo demands more bit rate than youtube). But 5Mbps are the average speed for big cities, most people outside the big cities are still using 1Mbps or 1,5Mbps for PC connections, just enough for 360p online streaming, and here, the 3G mobile connections are 1Mbps, 500Kbps or 256Kbps, and the 2G mobile connections keeps in 30-200Kbps floating... 4G is coming, 3Gis spreading, but it takes time.

So again: there are lots of things which matters much more than the gear: good actors, good script, good misanscene... clothers, scenarios... and good script and sound. In some 144p videos from youtube I could feel the importance of good actors, because even in 144p videos bad actors are revealed and made me feel it was a so amateur production, not convincing, unpleasant to see.

I showed to a female model I worked with two videos in 6400 iso from T3i camera, one was original, other was denoised and with film grain. I asked her: did you found any difference in the image? which one was more beautiful for you? And she answered: Oh sorry I did not pay attention to this, I was watching the people talking... but as I can remember... I saw no difference... And then I started fo feel frustrated about my image quality pursuing behavior... Story telling... Why worry so much about gear? I can do the same thing with that old GX88U and PV5500 VHS combo from the early 80s...

After sometime using a smartphone I got pretty addicted to it. It is much more pleasant than a computer for internet surfing... and I believe it is better than a tablet also. I just can carry it around to any place, lightweight, and I can put it inside my pocket!!! I am very satisfied with 800x480 screen, but God... there are 1920x1080 screens in expensive smartphones! I think people who work with online videos must take into account the main device for online video viewing are smartphones and 640x360 (360p) in a 5 inch screen is the resolution and size to consider for aestetics.
