They will have an aspherical design, also using extra low dispersion glass to improve edge sharpness.

Ffocal reducers will be 0.71x with 1 fstop increase in light.

Will be available in main mounts: Canon FD, Canon EOS EF, Nikon F or G, M42, MC/MD, OM, PK, Leica R, Yashica/Contax

Main problem of all focal reducers in market today is the edge blur, this is due to spherical lens design. Also some small amount of chromatic aberration is present. Someone will solve these issues using aspherical lenses and extra low dispersion glass.

This Apefos suggestion.

Worldwide Electricity Power Frequences and FPS https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10305/worldwide-electricity-power-frequences-and-fps Sat, 03 May 2014 19:34:00 +0000 goanna 10305@/talks/discussions image

There seems to be no foreseeable standardisation of electricity worldwide - despite the obvious cost savings that would produce in producing everything from turbines to appliances in the one standard.

Smart switchable power supplies in domestic appliances have managed to cope with the different countries' power supplies, however we all still know how the fast-flicker of electric lighting involves adjusting shutter-speed of video shooting.

The waveform of 230 volt, 50 Hz compared with 110 V, 60 Hz.

Frame rates for TV and video have traditionally corresponded to multiples of the AC cycle and 60p is often cited as an ideal frame-rate, for smoothness - but as one of the majority who lives in a 50Hz country, I'd like to see a future standard of 100fps video one day.

Bits of Canon Crap https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10292/bits-of-canon-crap Thu, 01 May 2014 15:26:40 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 10292@/talks/discussions

Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, will unveil today the results of a 2013 Anti-Counterfeit Study it commissioned on U.S. consumers’ attitudes and perceptions of counterfeit consumer electronics in the U.S.i The study reveals that while counterfeit consumer electronics are a significant concern to U.S. consumers, most seem to be unaware of the full impact and risks of their purchase and use. The study revealed that consumers trust their instincts, but seem to lack the understanding of the possible safety risks and the true long-term costs of counterfeit consumer electronics.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, $145 million worth of counterfeit consumer electronics entered the U.S. in 2013.ii The research commissioned by Canon reveals, however, that while three out of every four consumers surveyed were concerned about counterfeit consumer electronics, only about one in two believed they can accurately identify counterfeit consumer electronics.

“Most American consumers are unaware of the full risks associated with these potentially dangerous devices. Four in ten of the U.S. consumers surveyed don’t know counterfeit consumer electronics can harm them, and this lack of awareness leads to what Canon calls a ‘Confidence Trap’,” said Chuck Westfall, Technical Advisor, Professional Engineering & Solutions Division, Canon U.S.A, Inc. “Based on the survey, consumers seem overconfident in their ability to spot a fake, and as a result, are at risk of possible harm.”

Based on the survey results, 18 percent of U.S. consumer electronic purchasers surveyed say they have unknowingly purchased counterfeit consumer electronics this past year. Further, the study revealed, overconfident in their abilities, a significant proportion of consumers surveyed fell victim to counterfeit purchases, largely unaware that they could be putting themselves at risk of inferior product performance.

When it comes to purchase drivers, according to this, the majority of consumers surveyed overwhelmingly value product performance, quality, and safety when buying an electronic good. 82 percent of respondents cited product performance and 70 percent said product safety is important to them. It seems that purchasing counterfeits is therefore largely driven by a knowledge gap. For instance, close to half (45 percent) of consumers surveyed believe that a counterfeit product does the job just as well as the genuine product.

“One of the most significant revelations of this Anti-Counterfeit Study is our obligation to take action and educate consumers about the potential health and safety risks of counterfeit consumer electronics,” commented Westfall. “This research indicates that education can largely impact perceptions of counterfeit consumer electronics, and steer consumers away from making uninformed and misguided purchases. After learning about the facts, 71 percent of the U.S. consumers surveyed said that they were less likely to buy them.”

What it is all about? No one seen fake Canon camera, printer or even lens lately.

Click on http://usa.canon.com/cusa/about_canon/standard_display/aboutcounterfeits and we see that all this loads of long words are about batteries.
It is also about cartridges usually. generally, lot of fakes exist due to only reason - such products have huge margins :-)

Thing is they get it from wrong end. Right end is to establish few standards for size and such for the batteries used and make every damn corporation to use standard. And this is exactly that they try to avoid.

Dreams which worry you... https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10180/dreams-which-worry-you... Wed, 16 Apr 2014 11:03:06 +0000 Mark_the_Harp 10180@/talks/discussions Anyone had any worry-dreams? You know, the sort where you are involved in something really worrying, and hope you don't wake up and find out it's happening for real.

Last night I dreamed I was trying to do a video in a very run-down house. I was glad I'd brought a little bag of all sorts of weird CFL light bulbs because the ones in the house were very dim little incandescent bulbs, hanging down from random places in the ceiling, and they were all different fittings I'd never seen before. Then some news people arrived and set up a studio complete with lighting. They asked me to record the programme on my GH2, which surprised me a bit. I was really worried because I wasn't planning to do this and I wondered how much charge the camera had - and why they couldn't record it themselves. So every time they played something pre-recorded into the show (I guessed they'd already have that bit recorded so I wouldn't need to capture it again) I would go off to a back room to save files to make sure I wasn't going to miss any of the live stuff. The LCD was showing a graphic with bottles of milk, with a huge milk-churn showing the total capacity remaining on the SD card. But I couldn't get back into the studio for the next live sequence so I recorded it all off a monitor. I didn't have a tripod either - so the whole thing was shaky, and I was wondering how they were going to use any of this. I was thinking there would be terrible moire all over it, videoing off a screen. I never found out, as I woke up at that point...! Thank god.

I used to have recurring worry-dreams all the time at the BBC, as did other people, so I can't be the only one here who's had one. Anyone else care to share theirs?

Microsoft in serious talks with MediaTek https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10105/microsoft-in-serious-talks-with-mediatek Tue, 08 Apr 2014 07:10:05 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 10105@/talks/discussions

Microsoft has been aggressively trying to persuade MediaTek to push Windows-based tablets in China's white-box market and with the software giant's announcement of offering free Windows licensing to mobile devices sized below 9-inches, sources from the upstream supply chain expect a high chance for the two firms to form partnership. MediaTek and Microsoft did not confirm the rumor yet.

Because of Windows tablets' high prices, most brand vendors have chosen to develop Android-based tablets, but with Microsoft's new licensing policy, brand vendors may reconsider to develop related models, the sources said.

The sources pointed out that Microsoft and Qualcomm are mainly cooperating over Microsoft's Nokia smartphones, which had shipments of 10-20 million units in 2013. However, seeing the Windows platform continues to remain a minor player in the smartphone market, Microsoft is seeking cheaper solutions for its products to boost market share.

It is serious. First results of Microsoft can be already seen in the market of small tablets with full fledged Windows 8.1. If they move Windows Phone and Windows RT to MTK solutions their share can triple in no time.

What's the oldest digital camera you have ready for shooting? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10020/whats-the-oldest-digital-camera-you-have-ready-for-shooting Tue, 01 Apr 2014 17:09:47 +0000 karl 10020@/talks/discussions While contemplating the fate of several unharmed yet no longer usable digital cameras I own, all of which just suffer from a lack of still usable proprietary batteries which are not sold anymore, I wondered what is the oldest digital camera that I own that is still "ready for shooting" at any time.

For me it is actually a Konica Minolta A2, for which I was clever enough to buy the 6-AA-battery accessory while it was still available. The A2's original LiIon battery has long died, but using the standard batteries the A2 is still a quite usable 8 MPixel camera to take where you wouldn't take anything of too much value with you. And the A2 is also one of the few digital cameras that are so "analog-camera-like-to-operate" that you can hand them even to 80+ aged people to take a photo with.

What's your oldest digital camera still ready for shooting?

The device features 1080p avchd video @12mbps out of the box. The file that controls video bitrates is a simple xml file that can easily be changed and the device can handle quite a high bitrate ~60mbps or more on the internal storage. The quality seems limited by the tiny sensor/lens, so this is clearly not the next pro setup, but possibly something fun to fool with. Why not optimize the settings :) I'm not sure about posting external links here so I'll leave it at this for now. Will post more if there's interest.
