But a normal person also usually pays taxes, for the better of society. Apple does not. Think about this when considering your next buy - maybe you would like to support companies supporting society at least as much as you do.

eBay's new postage option: "the Global Shipping Program" = A nightmare! https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11707/ebays-new-postage-option-the-global-shipping-program-a-nightmare Wed, 05 Nov 2014 18:27:56 +0000 yiannis_zach 11707@/talks/discussions I had recently 2 awful experiences as a buyer, with this quite new "shipping+taxes" option (or "Global Shipping Program") that eBay uses:

I bought the first item and eBay's shipping company had it for days in their storage place, without never contacting me for delivery. I tried to contact them, and I had to pay for the call €5 (~$6.5), as they charge €1.34 the call, then 0.36/min and they have you waiting for at least 10-12min, without finally accepting your call, with the excuse that the lines are too busy and that you'll have to call later again...

Finally, one day, they came to deliver, but without even ringing my bell, they put it (a signed-for shipment) inside my box...

The second one, they never delivered any parcel, but their tracking status indicates that they did delivered to my hands and that they've put my name as the person who received the parcel... When I opened a dispute on PayPal for this, Paypal in dt time, closed the case, with the excuse that they can't help on this and that I have to find a solution with the seller!... In any other similar case, if the seller had shipped via any other carrier, they could ask him to show them (to PayPal) the proof of delivery, asking this from the shipping carrier... If the shipping company couldn't prove that they had my real signature, then the money had to be returned to me. But as this new company is eBay's (so & PayPal's) business, they of course closed their eyes, as they can't blame their own company. SO, I lost $273.76...

I will NEVER-EVER buy any item from sellers that they are using this "Global Shipping Program" again! NEVER! I've found though that there are hundreds of others with similar, like mine, problems...

If you are selling on eBay and you want to avoid any negative feedback caused by similar cases, never use this option again please.

To be able to do so, please follow this next steps, to block this shipping option from your sales:

Your ebay>>account>>site preferences>>posting and packaging preferences>Offer the Global Shipping Programme, then on the right hand side of the screen change yes to NO and save changes.

By the way I have to say that, with this "Global Shipping Program", buyers are paying more on import taxes, than if they had to pay straight to their customs...

That's all from me.

How would you design the next Panasonic GH camera? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11649/how-would-you-design-the-next-panasonic-gh-camera Mon, 27 Oct 2014 06:34:09 +0000 driftwood 11649@/talks/discussions If you could design the body outline of a new Panasonic GH camera what would it look like?

Would it look like the current GH4, or more like the shape of a Canon C300? Would it incorporate the features of the YAGH? Must it be useable for both video and photography? Where would you put the functional buttons, the battery, main shutter/record switches, external outputs for HDMI, audio; where would you place the LCD/s? the evf? Battery? What features would be included on the body?

All in all what would it look like? I'm sure Panasonic would be interested to know. Please show any kind of artwork, scribbles, CAD designs, wireframe outlines, together with discussion below;-

P.S. It is pure Nick initiative, I or PV does not support it. We really like collaboration with Panasonic, but on different thing and of different kind. VK.

  • auto iso in M for video with EV control (EV control for photos too)
  • auto iso limiter or range for video
  • every menu item programmable to every Fn (at least video AF, maybe not format)
  • AE/AF lock on-off-on-off usage during video recording
  • possibility to save camera setup with all C-memories. Now you can save family members to camera memory, why not camera setup with names like indoors, outdoors, sports, 4k, etc. Now there are too few C-memories.
  • focus peaking in AF-mode (if processor has power for it, helps monitoring AF)
  • sharpness setting in EVF and monitor (easier to monitoring focus)
  • stepless aperture change in video if possible
  • iso 50 or 100 would be handy for video in bright light
  • NIGHT MODE: if using slower than 1/25s shutter in video, camera should go automatically to proper manual mode maybe with warning
  • more songs (maybe mp3 load option) to slideshow and simple crossfade option when viewing photos. Music option for video slideshow also.
  • OIS modes for video: Action and steady or OIS freeze button option for static shots.

    LG will end plasma TVs production https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11660/lg-will-end-plasma-tvs-production Tue, 28 Oct 2014 10:11:57 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 11660@/talks/discussions

South Korea's LG Electronics Inc said it will wind down its plasma television business by end-November, as a technology long overtaken by liquid crystal display takes one step closer to its demise.

LG Electronics said in a regulatory filing on Tuesday that the decision reflects a decline in demand for plasma TVs, with the business accounting for 2.4 percent of its 2013 annual revenue. The exit was widely anticipated as LCD TVs have become the mainstay in global markets.

"We wanted to keep it going as long as we could," LG spokesman Ken Hong told Reuters, noting that LG Electronics has been making its own plasma panels. "No matter how much we try to keep it going it's just not a business anymore."

A lot of bug reports, responses are pretty rare (especially from BM staff). But the saddest thing, is that those professional color graders can be real (excuse me) a***oles. The only right way to do things is RAW, you got to have timecodes in all material, RTFM (almost 1000 pages) and blah blah.

I've seen this phenomenon also in my country among video professionals. They e.g. really hate DSLR cameras. They have really bad attitude at the forums, that I'm really surprised that they still get gigs and make their living out of it.

Or is it just that when they go to Internet, they feel like they are Gods and can do/say what ever they want.

Luckily, this kind of attitude is really rare at P-V forums. Probably because so many hear are hobbyists.

Have someone else noticed something similar?

As aerial stock footage is very expensive. The Warp Stabilizer in AE is excellent and I feel I can take out the jitter in my video. The Gh4 can, and needs to improve https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11393/the-gh4-can-and-needs-to-improve Thu, 25 Sep 2014 13:42:17 +0000 UEstudios 11393@/talks/discussions I just got a gh4... and I have used a gh3 since it was released. Now I don't think the gh3 could improve much, its IPB codecs specially 50p are very nice. But the gh4... kinda disapointed me in some ways. The 4k modes, will only be at 100mbps, while there are 1080p modes at 200mbps. Why would be the reason of that? My guess would be the gh4's hardware can actually record 4k at 200mbps. Getting rid of some of those compression artifacts... Also something else that kind of made me sad is why the 96fps mode looks like uprezed 720.. I guess a ~70fps mode at full 1080 could be possible on that hardware too

At the moment my gh4 feels like a strong horse with 3 legs. If i want to make a video with it, I won't use the 96fps mode because it looks mushy, also I doubt I will use 4k, if anyway Im going to need to shoot some takes at 50p (4k 50p? too much maybe?), the 4k doesnt present much of an advantatge, rather a problem later in post aswell as weird changes in resolution and detail throughout the finished video. Im actually scared of using it for money work.. Probably customers wouldn't even tell but Im scared of ending up with non-solid products. I will keep using my well trusted gh3 for the jobs and the gh4 shooting at similar settings only... Doesnt feel so much of an upgrade.

Is there any possibility of a firmware hack? If any of those issues could be sorted, it would make this camera becomes a serious serious tool, to the level that I doubt that I would spend my money on bigger cameras instead of lenses lighting etc.

In-camera Wireless. Is it useful to you? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11551/in-camera-wireless.-is-it-useful-to-you Tue, 14 Oct 2014 08:56:19 +0000 mpgxsvcd 11551@/talks/discussions Most of the newest cameras have wireless built-in the camera with the exception being the Canon 7D MKII. Canon obviously believes this feature is not a requirement for high end enthusiast cameras.

So the question is “Is built-in wireless something you would use”? Have you used it before? Has it been beneficial to you or did it not meet your needs? Did you have trouble getting the wireless to work?

I think wireless is one of the least understood new features that the cameras have. Everyone thinks of it as just another way to post a “Selfy”. When it actually could be a very lucrative tool in a Professional Photography portfolio.

There are some circumstances where quality is not the absolute number one priority. News reporting is one of those situations. In that scenario time to post is the ultimate priority. Image quality is definitely a goal but getting the picture distributed in near real-time is essential.

Sports often require near-time distribution as well. Laptops and even tablets are not always practical solutions for editing and uploading in the field. That is where built-in wireless and in camera editing can be very beneficial.

The problem is that all of the in-camera wireless implementations I have used have been cumbersome. For example Panasonic’s Lumix Link App will only upload very low resolution (960x540) images to social media sites.

They have an app built directly in the camera for uploading as you shoot the images. However, that app cannot create a separate folder or album when it uploads. Therefore, it just dumps everything into a generic “Mobile Uploads” folder that becomes very cluttered and unmanageable.

In addition, their upload while you shoot function doesn’t work with the new images from video feature. It won’t trigger the upload automatically like it does with the regular Still images mode.

I wonder if these flaws in the implementations are preventing users from seeing the potential of wireless? Hopefully, the companies will start to fine tune the wireless capabilities so that this feature is adopted by more users.

What would it take for you to use in camera wireless?

I asked about budget , he said he don't mind paying alot if he gets the right system that he asked for, so basically -HD quality _ok in low light _able to record for 3 to 4 hours , preferably stream live to pc (and what software to record this?) -Able to record 3 to 4 different cameras at once any idea's guy? thanks

GH4 4K Image Analysis (Is it really 4K?) https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11558/gh4-4k-image-analysis-is-it-really-4k Tue, 14 Oct 2014 19:14:46 +0000 Astro 11558@/talks/discussions Hi I have had the GH4 for some time now and use it pretty much every day. I have also conducted a lot of tests, all sorts of tests...however as my main business is 3d and graphics I dont like to just test, my main business is creating.

Now to get to the point, I have read on this forum "User Reviews and Opinions" that the GH4 image is really 3K not 4K.

Now this may or may not be right, I have no wish to get in a flame war about this, my only interest is to establish some real world facts. Here is what I have found...(after quite a few tests) I did the recent one in UHD mode (3840 x 2160) in 4K photo mode...which BTW works the best for me (I use 25p) I use it because of the incredible detail if you get the focus right.

I have a 2560 x 1440 27 inch monitor, and in my tests I have recorded videos of several complex scenes leafy trees and so on, captured a still image of the movie and analyzed that image in an image editing/art program (any art program will do PS or Painter etc...). When zoomed right in at 2400%, you can see the individual pixels with different color shades very clearly, and consistently those screen caps show a different color in each pixel, except in areas where there are large amounts of color with no shading, this color differentiation is clearly seen by eye in full zoom and confirmed by simply sampling the color pixel with the eye dropper tool, if the image is really 3K, then I assume this would not happen. I am happy to be proven wrong, but my tests show that at the very least the GH4 uses a different color for each pixel of either a 4K image or a UHD image.

Now another point is that a group of 4 x 4 pixels (16 pixels) is very small on a 2560 x 1440 27 inch monitor, I can only imagine how small they may look on a 4K monitor that is 27 inches. All in all, my findings are that (especially in 4K photo mode...but also in the UHD/4K modes ) the detail of the GH4 is almost beyond what your eye can see in 99% of circumstances and you would need to be sitting quite close to large 4K monitor to really see any difference. My verdict on the GH4, an amazing camera in just about every respect!!

And yes I use iDynamic in high contrast areas (bright sun, treees and shade) and it works amazingly, but you do need enough light and it will not introduce noise in that circumstance. Cheers

Recently I uploaded one more poppoza to vimeo and audio was seriously compromised.
In both x264 or x265 copy versions the audio track (48 KHz AAC 320 Kb/s) has loose a bit of "organicness" and gain more noise but vimeo compression just made it much worse, almost painful.

So I'd like to understand 2 things:

A - Did I push the audio too much in post? Please see, well listen to small wav sample extracted from master video file.

B - How could I improve audio compression for web upload maintaining image quality? Regarding the visual aspect, I'm Ok with how vimeo chews my x264/5 uploads, after all for non PLUS users it's always a matter of balance (500Mb 1 HD upload per week).

All constructivist feedback is most welcome =)
As a "token" of my appreciation here's a LUT I made using DRL (zip file)

Can high framerates offset compression artifacts? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11507/can-high-framerates-offset-compression-artifacts Tue, 07 Oct 2014 11:24:11 +0000 Brian_Siano 11507@/talks/discussions I was looking at some footage I shot with a consumer-grade camcorder, of a running stream. I shot it at 60fps, so when I play it at a slow-motion 24fps it looks wonderful and fluid and alla that good stuff. However, when I freeze the frames, the narrow bitrate of the camcorder is pretty obvious-- the points where the water gets turbulent become chaotic little blocks of data.

So I have a question. If I shoot at 24fps, or 30fps, the compression artifacts are certainly visible. If I were to shoot at 60fps, and render it as 24 or 30-- not in slow-motion, maybe frame blending-- the renderer would have two frames to combine into one. Would this extra data enable me to reduce the compression blocking in the final?

Apologies if this is a stupid question.

Black holes have long captured the public imagination and been the subject of popular culture, from Star Trek to Hollywood. They are the ultimate unknown – the blackest and most dense objects in the universe that do not even let light escape. And as if they weren't bizarre enough to begin with, now add this to the mix: they don't exist.

Merging two seemingly conflicting theories, Laura Mersini-Houghton, a physics professor at UNC-Chapel Hill in the College of Arts and Sciences, has proven, mathematically, that black holes can never come into being in the first place.
