A couple of years ago I bought the Dedolight 436 with DT36-1 ballast (www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/231419-REG/Dedolight_K436_400W_One_Light_Kit.html) for a great price on ebay. It takes a 400w 36v halogen bulb and with the ballast packs a real punch basically the equivalent of a 1k. It's a tremendous light, but I find myself rarely using it though because of the size. I was considering selling it, until I thought that it might be possible to convert it to an HMI. Dedolight also makes an HMI (www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1090974-REG/dedolight_k400dt_s_hf_dlh400d_std_hmi_hf_blst_hard.html) of the same wattage that is part of the same series as this light, so it might be possible. Does anyone have any idea of how I would even go about contemplating to do this?

Mini Review of the Kinoflo Celeb 200 [LED Lighting] https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11511/mini-review-of-the-kinoflo-celeb-200-led-lighting Tue, 07 Oct 2014 13:37:20 +0000 andyharris 11511@/talks/discussions Currently I'm of the view that lighting is more important than cameras (given a reasonable starting point) so I've bought a pair of Kinoflo Celeb 200s.

Here's my blog post:

http://wbavproductions.co.uk/resources/celeb200.html

Here's a picture:

And here's a little test video based on a script I had knocking about and haven't used yet:

My goal was a quick test to gain experience, I matched the colour temperature with the outside ambient. I matched the power of the lamps to give a natural effect.

Softbox for the 312 Led light https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2327/softbox-for-the-312-led-light Sun, 19 Feb 2012 11:10:01 +0000 atticusd 2327@/talks/discussions Hi guys,

I've been looking for a cheap softbox/diffuser solution to make the light from a 312 bicolor led more pleasant looking and keep the eyes of the actor from burning out. There's a lot of stuff on ebay but being an available light kind of guy I'm a bit lost.

Any recommendations? I would buy from anywhere but prefer a european seller/shop.

Thanks a lot!

Cheap HMI lights - Made in germany https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9342/cheap-hmi-lights-made-in-germany Tue, 14 Jan 2014 04:32:02 +0000 klem007 9342@/talks/discussions I found myself in the market for an other lamp. After selling some of my redheads i planned on getting a second arri lamp but ended up getting something better ?

It amazes me how little talk there is around these lamps on the internet and i think that our forum could be a good place to point people to this option.

The light i bought was the Hedler Dx15. Its a quality HMi light with built in balast. Weighs about 2-3 kilo and gives about a 650w output for 150w consumption. I love the handle on the back which i find missing on the arri's when they get hot. And the build quality is on par with what you'd expect from german built material.

I bought the cheapest version being the lamp without fresnel and this one you can get for 450 euro. Fresnel or higher powerd versions cost more.

Last thing i bought was the umbrella holder which is a cheap way to modify your light.

Z Mini review in Spanish

La chica says it's equal to 150W tungsten which is not much but still decent provided the size and the weight of the light. For $495 I know no competitive solution currently for such a small and portable fresnel. Or is there any?

Newbie looking for CFL advice https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10846/newbie-looking-for-cfl-advice Sun, 20 Jul 2014 21:31:30 +0000 Brian_Siano 10846@/talks/discussions Here's the background. I did a shoot a few weeks ago, using a GH2 and the Cake patch, to shoot interviews. We set up a lighting rig using three LED panels and umbrella stands. While we were shooting my camera's screen showed a set of green bands running horizontally across the image. This was new to me, but I reasoned that the adjustable LED panels might be causing it-- you know, refresh rates and alla that. So I switched to 100-watt incandescent bulbs for the rest of the shoot.

Well, the footage shot with the LEDs was fine, no green bands. But the 100-watt bulbs weren't as bright. So, it seems to me that I should use more powerful lights, and I'm thinking CFLs equivalent to 200-watt incandescents.

So my question is: what color temperature should I look for? Floods or standard configurations (for use with white-umbrella stands)? Do they make dimmable high-power CFLs, so I can adjust the lighting more delicately? (And if I did this dimming thing, would there be problems like flicker or banding with my GH2?)

Sorry if this has been asked before, but the info I found was in many different threads, and I figured, let's assemble it all in one post/thread.

It's small, lightweight (unlike the old GLP which was the size of Spock's old tri-corder from the TV series and was like a lead weight hanging around my neck). It's very accurate, and also measures contrast. For $169 it's the cheapest light meter you'll find out there, and works great for DSLR video work.

DIY Fresnel LED lights https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3558/diy-fresnel-led-lights Tue, 12 Jun 2012 14:37:00 +0000 kronstadt 3558@/talks/discussions LED lights are awesome, save you a LOT of hassle on location, and are dropping in prices. At the same time the good old ARRI fresnel tungsten lighting gives you that beautiful cinematic lighting - so beautiful and easy to control that you might want to put up with all the hassle and cost that they involve.

So I thought: would it be possible to combine best of both worlds? Would it be possible to have LED lights which also work as a Fresnel lights? Then I found out that this is the newest cutting edge thing that ARRI offers in it’s L-series, and LightPanels is releasing its own early models too, and they cost tens of thousands of dollars!

I wonder if I can make it DIY?

After all it shouldn’t be that difficult. I thought of getting a 312ASZ led panel (which, correct me if I'm wrong should give me a 250W equivalent) and sticking one of those plastic Fresnel lenses that old people use to read newspapers. Like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Magnifier-Full-Page-Magnifying-Fresnel-Lens-Sheet-XL-/320649270129?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4aa82f9371#ht_3008wt_932 or fresnel lenses for Solar cookers like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fresnel-Lens-Over-Head-Projector-Solar-Cooker-Oven-Project-OHP-310mm-x310mm-x4mm-/150826264411?pt=UK_Gadgets&hash=item231df2275b#ht_500wt_1164

But then the question becomes, are these good enough Fresnel lenses for purposes of cinematic lighting? And how to make it so that the lens moves back and forth, so as to focus the light?

What do you think? Any advices? Any suggestions? Any links to such DIY tutorials?

Different sites sell different models but the picture is the same. So, what's the difference between FL360L and the FL360LE ?

Homemade LED Ribbon China Balls-Rolling Experiment https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9287/homemade-led-ribbon-china-balls-rolling-experiment Tue, 07 Jan 2014 17:47:29 +0000 vicharris 9287@/talks/discussions Ok guys, I'm just going to start a thread with all my findings, success' and failures in the search for a homemade China Globe option like we say in the American Hustle thread. Of course name brand LiteGear ones here http://store.litegear.com/product_p/lrp-vho60-x3-1m.htm.

I also found some cheap Chinese ones from Amazon Prime. Why did I pick these?

  1. Free shipping
  2. If they are defective or don't put out the correct light described, I can send them back easily. This only applies to the US folk, sorry about that guys.

Anyways, here's a few links to the ones I'm trying out.

  1. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QQ48TK/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  2. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00710K0DE/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  3. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002Q907EW/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm going to start off with #1 above as they came in first. I'm not going to get to into the design and build quality at this point as I'm just evaluating whether these cheap LEDs can even be used. If so, relatively easily, we'll get into the other stuff.

Tonight I just did a down and dirty test with the Pocket Cam and the Sigma 18-35 shooting ProRes 800asa at 3200k in Film Log. I just stood in a blacked out room and held the strand of LEDs about 12-16 inches from my face. Once again, just trying to get an idea of whats going on. Here's a some screen grabs of before and after a quick grade.

@pundit @BurnetRhoades Here ya guys go. See if these are worth a shit :)

Update: The third pic is the first rigged up piece. I'm powering it off of one of my batteries I used on my GH2. Works prefect and the mic stand holds it well for testing. Think I might be on to something cheap and useful here.

Anyone interested in good 500-1000 LED lights?

Something like this:

For one of the models manufacturer tells that quality is same as:

I mean CRI>=93

Please, not that this won't cheap lights as we are aimed at high quality stuff.]]>
