Interesting interviews with Olympus https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8542/interesting-interviews-with-olympus Thu, 24 Oct 2013 16:58:14 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 8542@/talks/discussions

In 2012, the total shipment quantity was 20 million units.

DE: 20 million total interchangeable lens cameras?

Ogawa: Yes, including mirrors. [Ed. note - that is, including both mirrorless and DSLRs] Now, the average age is mid-40s and the percentage of females went up to 30%. This is thanks to, we believe, Olympus introducing the Olympus Pen. That contributed to the significant change in the demographics. (By the way, out of 20 million units, four million units were mirrorless or CSC.)

DE: Four million, out of 20?

Ogawa: Yes.

DE: Ah, so about 20%.

Ogawa: Yes, the rest, over 16 million units, were mainly SLR.

........

Ogawa: With the development of output devices like 4K TVs, we probably could say the same thing about movies as well, for the future. We are also preparing for that future as well, specifically movies. I believe that the TruePic VII processor we’ve newly developed for the E-M1 will have much better quality and performance than the competition.

Now we’re working on the next generation engine as well. For that next generation engine, we are expecting that movie sharing will be the new demand coming. So we are prepared for that.

When we look at today’s movie sharing, social networking or websites like YouTube and some others, perhaps today's OM-D movie quality is good enough. So I believe that movie quality will matter more when 4K TV penetration becomes really high. Then we have to have our device ready for it.

DE: Mr. Ogawa mentioned that contrast detect is more accurate than phase detect. That’s certainly the case when you have a separate phase detect sensor, and the PD sensor might be out of position. But I was surprised that when you have phase detect elements on chip, PD is actually still less accurate than contrast detect even though they’re right on the same chip as the imaging pixels.

Shirota: Yes, comparing contrast auto focus and phase detection auto focus with a separate sensor, the phase detection is inferior in terms of accuracy. However, with on-chip phase detection, that inferiority will go away. It’s better in terms of accuracy compared to this conventional way.

Looks like we're going to be at Big Wangs at 801 SOUTH GRAND AVE. LA, CA 90017 (don't let the name fool you, it's not that bad) on the 13th of Jul at 1PM. They offered to let us have the patio which might be nice but if it's a little hot, I'm sure we can move it inside. I'll throw up some money for some appetizer trays and a couple pitchers of beer but by no means expect anyone else to. I know some wanted to hold this at different locations and possible have some sort of speaker or viewing but some of us think it's better just to have an initial meet and great, then if all goes well and there's enough combined interest, look into other events down the road. Here's a poll to get a real headcount for the business on the 13th. If you could take a min and let us know if you plan to show, that would be great and a huge help.

http://www.esurveyspro.com/App/Polls/DirectPoll.aspx?id=22904

In terms of transpo, like I said before, there's two lots right across the street that charge $6 on the weekends and @Shian said the Metro let's off a couple blocks away which is pretty convenient.

Like we said before, if anyone wants to bring some gear that others might be interested in trying, go ahead and let us know. I'll bring my SLR Magic Cine set and Rokinon Cine set, though I just did sell the 14mm to one of our guys here. Maybe he'll bring it if anyone wants to try it. Thanks again and see ya'll on the 13th of JUL!!

With a half-dozen local friends/videomakers RSVP'd to join us throughout the day and an open call to all P-V members, we set up under some shade with snacks and drinks around 1:30PM.

The event was attended by only one member who wasn't already a part of our videomaking circle. He is Korean, and an associate professor at a local graduate school of "Cinematic Content". He brought his teenaged son and GH3, seeking technical advice for an upcoming documentary production in northeastern China. For three hours or so we discussed classic films from Japan and Europe, the film-school bubble, professional and artistic aspirations, and the GH cameras.

He left, and then the local expat filmmakers arrived. Some are P-V members, some are not. We shared and critiqued content we've been working on, discussed short and medium term plans, and had fried chicken and beer.

Though it was a fine day, this wasn't the P-V meetup we hoped for. The scheduling was short notice, and the following day was a work day; these factors probably affected the turnout. Apparently over 250 PV members live in Korea. Next time we hope to get a few more of them.

Adobe will soon make the iPad an even more viable solution for mobile content creation: the company will soon unleash a version of its popular Lightroom photo editing suite that is optimized for tablets. References to Lightroom for Mobile appeared on Adobe’s official website earlier this week, but they were immediately removed when we contacted Adobe for comment on the yet-to-be-announced product.

Adobe’s tagline for the product is “Take Lightroom anywhere”. One-year subscription will be $99.

The data breach at Target was significantly broader than originally reported: The company said Friday that 70 million customers had information such as their name, address, phone number and e-mail address hacked in the breach. Target said the personal data stolen could affect its past shoppers -- not just those who have visited the store recently.

Target Corp and Neiman Marcus are not the only U.S. retailers whose networks were breached over the holiday shopping season last year, according to sources familiar with attacks on other merchants that have yet to be publicly disclosed.

Smaller breaches on at least three other well-known U.S. retailers took place and were conducted using similar techniques as the one on Target, according to the people familiar with the attacks. Those breaches have yet to come to light. Also, similar breaches may have occurred earlier last year.

Most of the 2,500 workers at the factories will move to Tower, while the rest will switch to other roles at Panasonic, the person said.

President Kazuhiro Tsuga is seeking alliances for the Osaka-based company’s chip business as he continues restructuring its consumer-electronics units, including ending production of plasma televisions. The company plans to cut as many as 7,000 workers in the semiconductor business, or about half of the staff.

The acquisition expands Yamaha’s portfolio of modeling guitar processing products as well as pro-audio equipment, and offers new and exciting opportunities for accelerated growth for both companies.

Say farewell to Samsung cameras, all will be phone with lenses now https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9089/say-farewell-to-samsung-cameras-all-will-be-phone-with-lenses-now Fri, 13 Dec 2013 17:19:55 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 9089@/talks/discussions

Samsung Electronics integrated the Digital Imaging Business Division, in charge of cameras, with the Wireless Business Division. Samsung Electronics began to create synergies between smartphones and cameras in a bid to capture the largest share of the global mirrorless camera market in 2015. Also, earlier this year, the company created the Enterprise Business (EB) Team, and turned the global B2B Center into a quasi-business division. Its intention is to reinforce B2B sales as the consumer goods market is saturated.

Samsung Electronics executed reorganization on December 11.

Samsung Electronics maintained the 3-company business system: vice-chairman Kwon Oh-hyeon (DS: Device Solution), CEO Yoon Boo-geun (CE: consumer electronics) and Shin Jong-gyun (IM: IT Mobile). Global economic recession continues, but they performed excellently. We need to keep an eye on the IM Company during this organizational realignment. Samsung Electronics removed the Digital Imaging Business Division in charge of cameras. Samsung Electronics reshuffled it into the Imaging Business Team, and plans to make full use of the Wireless Business Division which has the leadership in the global market.

Samsung Electronics explained, “We will transplant the brand, sales networks, software competency and manufacturing competitiveness of the Wireless Business Division into the Camera Business Division, and integrate the technical know-how of the two business divisions into competency for differentiating our smartphones.” To increase its share of the camera market, it will take advantage of the networks and marketing know-how of the Wireless Business Division and enhance the camera competitiveness of smartphones at the same time. Under the Media Solution Center of the IM Company, Samsung Electronics created the Big Data Center. It looks like a measure to actively respond to changes in trends by means of Big Data analysis. Some business divisions, such as the Washing Machine Business Division, have already capitalized on the Big Data analysis technique to produce visible outcomes.

CSR, the Cambridge-based microchip maker (they got all Zoran developers and assets), has announced a retreat from the digital camera market as sales decline and amateur photographers increasingly rely on smartphones.

The company said it would take a $90m (£54.6m) one-off impairment charge, mostly attributable to goodwill, to shut down its camera-on-a-chip business.

Joep van Beurden, chief executive of CSR, said: "We continue to take a disciplined approach to capital allocation and cost control and have decided to withdraw investment from the COACH [camera-on-a-chip] platform due to weakness in the digital still camera market."

He said the company would redeploy some camera-on-a-chip engineers in higher-growth divisions. Some 200 jobs will be lost in the second quarter of 2014, however.
