GoPro could conceivably fetch $1 billion, based on the price that Hewlett Packard paid for Palm—another struggling electronics maker—in 2010. A sale might happen. CEO Nick Woodman has said publicly that he is open to a deal. Chinese electronics maker Xiaomi has weighed whether to make an offer but doesn’t want to overpay, according to a person familiar with the matter.

GoPro Inc. jumped as much as 8.8 percent after a report said Chinese electronics maker Xiaomi Corp. has weighed whether to make an offer for the action-camera maker.

Can be quite real, as Yi suddenly become not too big priority for Xiaomi few months ago, as it seems.

One focus of this effort has been an initiative called Prodicle. At its core, Prodicle puts a variety of production application technologies into the hands of our freelance production crew. By creating this foundational environment, we’re able to leverage existing technologies (like Google’s G-Suite) to collaborate with our productions in real-time. Furthermore, we’re able to introduce new technologies that reshape the fundamentals of production planning and logistics. For example, here’s a look at our first progressive web application called Prodicle Move.

Move seeks to answer one simple question: “What is happening on set right now?” We want to put that information into the hands of every user, using a mobile app that showcases key shooting data. The concept in and of itself is not groundbreaking, but the prospects of taking information once found only in emails and PDFs and centralizing it in real-time, opens up countless possibilities for efficiency across the production and back at the studio.

Multiple sources tell us that Google is acquiring Lytro, the imaging startup that began as a ground-breaking camera company for consumers before pivoting to use its depth-data, light-field technology in VR.

One source described the deal as an “asset sale” with Lytro going for no more than $40 million. Another source said the price was even lower: $25 million. A third source tells us that not all employees are coming over with the company’s technology: some have already received severance and parted ways with the company, and others have simply left. Assets would presumably also include Lytro’s 59 patents related to light-field and other digital imaging technology.

The sale would be far from a big win for Lytro and its backers. The startup has raised just over $200 million in funding and was valued at around $360 million after its last round in 2017, according to data from PitchBook.

EBay said it will start processing payments globally using Dutch payments company Adyen, allowing its users to remain on the eBay website when checking out.

PayPal said eBay shoppers will still be able to select PayPal as a form of payment until at least July 2023. The news from eBay came as PayPal reported quarterly earnings that beat Wall Street estimates but gave a disappointing outlook for the first quarter. PayPal shares initially fell 5 percent after the release of the quarterly results.

The chief executive officer of PayPal, Dan Schulman, said on a call with analysts that the changing relationship with eBay was very “manageable” and that it was in line with PayPal’s new strategy.

EBay accounts for roughly 13 percent of total payments processed by PayPal.

Paypal processed $131 billion in payments in the fourth quarter, up 32 percent from a year earlier, and added 8.7 million active customers.

This is just my personal opinion, but I think that maybe by next year’s CP+ you’ll see full-frame mirrorless cameras from Canon and Nikon. I think [by then] they will be participating in this market.

Just look at our technologies, like eye focus. All of that data comes from the imaging sensor. In DSLRs, the data comes from separate sensors. The main imaging sensor is blanked out, 90% of the time by the mirror. The sensor is turned off. But the imaging sensor is very important. So if cameras are going to develop, and be more able to capture the moment, manufacturers have to develop mirrorless technologies. So within one year, I think.

March 1. 2018

Questions asked by:

Todd Mellon Japan PV Team

Your questions answered by:

Michiharu Uematsu (Panasonic Technical Consultant)
Masanori Kouyama (Panasonic Assistant Chief of DSC Product Planning)
Tetsuji Kamio (Panasonic GH line development team)

Question - Don't you think that cameras kind of stuck in the Apple II era (in stone age, in other words)? As you go from one camera manufacturer to another you need to learn new OS, new structure of menus, sometimes new specific terms even. I am not talking about mounts here, but it is also related to Apple II era as different computers had different expansion slots :-)

Answer - It’s an interesting observation. But we don’t expect changes in this soon.

Q - To extend previous question. Don't you think that for present time cameras are still really dumb? May be it is related to the fact that it is very relatively small teams of developers are working on camera software?

AWe have to differentiate from many manufacturers. We are trying to make our best. Others also. We do not think we reached our limits yet.

Q - GH cameras price is rising with each new model, especially GH5s. Lot of people who stopped updating at the GH2 and GH3 times ask if Panasonic will address the video focused amateurs in GH line. Or it is now G line that is made for them?

A - G series are also actively used by filmmakers and now they offer better image quality than earlier GH series.
Actually, what functions you want to be present additionally in G series? Please tell us.

Q - Any chance of GH5 / GH5s specifications ever appearing in an m43 video camera form factor (a la AF100 lineup)?

A - This is difficult to say

Q - Lot of members ask about cheap video oriented fixed aperture lenses with linear focusing like 12-60 F4 or 50-200 F4, for example. It seems like it is one of the few remaining niches in m43 lenses line-up, don't you think?

A - Thanks for the request, we will look into it.

Q - Is 48 frames per second still planned for the gh5 and gh5s cameras?

A - This may be a compatibility issue with 4k

Q - Any plans to enable option for control for aperture/ shutter via USB. So devices like Promote that work with the gh4 can work with the GH5?

A - We have no plan, but it would be interesting to do if we have enough requests

Q - Any plans to for an "untouched" picture profile? One that will completely disable noise reduction (especially temporal noise reduction), Sharpening, and any additional processing.

A - This is an interesting idea.

Q - Will future firmware updates increase the differences between the GH5 and GH5s? But, as Panasonic continue to improve these cameras, will there be other features that one camera gets and the other doesn't?

A - Of course each camera has it’s features. IS sensitivity, etc. There will be updates, and maybe some overlap, but each will remain individual.

Q - One member really wished that G85 could have gotten anything higher than 60fps, even if I had to drop down to 720p resolution. Is it possible or it is also hardware limit?

A - Although there is no plan to do this, it is possible to do and unlikely to be a hardware limit.

Q - Another question considering G85, any plans adding V-log modes via future firmware update?

A - There are no plans.

Q - Do you think that double card slots will become standard feature for all cameras on the market above certain level?

AWe are not sure.

Q - What do you think about users critique considering protruding strap lugs on some Panasonic m43 cameras?

A- It’s interesting. Most seem to not mind, but we have heard this from some users, and we are considering other options.

Q - Whether we will see the multi-aspect sensor on all future cameras?

A - It depends on the camera’s sensor. We know people like this function, and some of us do too. Sensors cost money. Common sense is a factor.

Q - Is Panasonic planning to further improve color science in the full range of the camera lineup?

A - HDR mode has 2020 color space in intelligent mode, we feel it is enough.

Q - GH5s in manual video mode does not support both auto ISO and AF lock at same time, so user can lock/unlock ISO with one touch. Is it possible to add?

A- If we understand the question correctly, in our opinion, nearly the same function can be done with AE mode. Do you mean to lock and unlock both simultaneously?

Q - Can and will DCI Cinema 4k 60fps be added to the Original GH5?

AHeat would likely be an issue.

Q - Multiple members want, if possible to try adding some raw video modes to GH5 and GH5s, even if it will be sensor crop or other limits. Is it possible or hardware here is the limit?

A - Officially we are unsure, but it is likely a heat issue as well.

Q - All last years in video oriented mirrorless market it was move to higher bitrates. No one followed Samsung with their move to more efficient HEVC codec and lower bitrate (and price for their last NX model still keep rising on used market). No one offering 10bit and 12bit HEVC video options. Do you expect it to change (not talking about Panasonic plans, but as general market approach)?

A - We have to consider compatibility first. BlackMagic Davinci and other editors have HEVC support already. But it is still rare.

Q - Can cameras become sold as part hardware and part service, especially low end cameras? I mean here that you will pay for subscription to advanced cloud based artificial intelligence that will help you with framing, exposure, lighting? Is it possible?

A - We cannot answer to this question as this is business strategy matter.

Samsung's Stacked ISOCELL Image Sensor https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/19100/samsungs-stacked-isocell-image-sensor Wed, 28 Feb 2018 08:09:01 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 19100@/talks/discussions

The new 3-stack ISOCELL Fast 2L3 with integrated DRAM supports super-slow motion, low-light shooting, real-time HDR imaging, while minimizing picture distortion Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today introduced the newest addition to its ISOCELL image sensor family, the 3-stack ISOCELL Fast 2L3. The 1.4-micrometer (μm) 12-megapixel (Mp) image sensor with integrated dynamic random access memory (DRAM) delivers fast data readout speeds to capture both rapid movements in super-slow motion and sharper still photographs with less noise and distortion.

image

“Samsung’s ISOCELL image sensors have made great leaps over the generations, with technologies such as ISOCELL for high color fidelity and Dual Pixel for ultra-fast autofocusing, bringing the smartphone camera ever closer to DSLR-grade photography,” said Ben K. Hur, vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. “With an added DRAM layer, Samsung’s new 3-stack ISOCELL Fast 2L3 will enable users to create more unique and mesmerizing content.”

image

Conventional image sensors are constructed with two silicon layers; a pixel array layer that converts light information into an electric signal, and an analog logic layer that processes the electric signal into digital code. The digital code is then sent via MIPI interface to the device’s mobile processor for further image tuning before being saved to the device’s DRAM. While all these steps are done instantaneously to implement features like zero-shutter lag, capturing smooth super-slow-motion video requires image readouts at a much higher rate.

Delivering an advanced solution, the Samsung ISOCELL Fast 2L3 is a high speed 3-stack CMOS image sensor designed with the company’s two-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR4 DRAM attached below the analog logic layer. With the integration, the image sensor can temporarily store a larger number of frames taken in high speed quickly onto the sensor’s DRAM layer before sending frames out to the mobile processor and then to the device’s DRAM. This not only allows the sensor to capture a full-frame snapshot at 1/120 of a second but also to record super-slow motion video at up to 960 frames per second (fps). With 960fps recording, which is 32 times the typical filming speed (30fps), recording moments such as a child hitting his or her first game-winning homerun, a baby taking his or her first step, or a friend doing a gazelle flip on a skateboard becomes much more dramatic.

In addition to super slow motion video, fast readout can hugely enhance the photography experience. Since the sensor captures an image at very high speeds, it significantly reduces the ‘jello-effect,’ or image distortion, when taking a picture of fast-moving objects, for example helicopter rotor blades. By storing multiple frames in the split of a second, the sensor can support 3-Dimensional Noise Reduction (3DNR) for clearer pictures when shooting in low-light, as well as real time high-dynamic-range (HDR) imaging, and detect even the slightest hint of movement for automatic instant slow-motion recording.

The image sensor is also equipped with Dual Pixel technology, which allows each and every one of the 12-million pixels of the image sensor to employ two photodiodes that respectively work as a phase detection auto-focus (PDAF) agent. With ultra-fast auto-focus in any lighting condition, it will be harder to miss capturing important moments before they pass by.

The Samsung ISOCELL Fast 2L3 is currently in mass production.

The Company's Board of Directors has terminated the employment of Louis Hernandez, Jr., former Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately, due to violations of Company policies related to workplace conduct. Mr. Hernandez has also resigned from his position on the Avid Board of Directors and Nancy Hawthorne has been elected Chairman of the Board.

Mr. Rosica, who joined Avid in early 2013, is a well-known industry veteran with more than 30 years' experience in broadcast, media and entertainment. Prior to his role as President, he served as Senior Vice President, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for the Company.

Nancy Hawthorne, Chairman of the Avid Board of Directors, said, "Jeff's deep experience as an industry expert coupled with his impressive knowledge of Avid's business and strategy make him the natural choice to lead the Company."

Jeff Rosica, President and Chief Executive Officer of Avid, said, "I am honored and excited for this opportunity to lead Avid through this important moment in the Company's history. The outlook for Avid is strong, and I look forward to working with the leadership team, the Board and our incredibly talented employees as we execute on our strategic priorities and continue our journey to be a best-in-class company and leader in our industry."

With the assistance of independent external legal counsel, a Special Committee comprising independent members of the Board of Directors conducted a thorough investigation into allegations of improper non-financially related workplace conduct by Mr. Hernandez. After reviewing the findings of the Special Committee's investigation, the Board of Directors unanimously concluded that the findings warranted immediate termination of Mr. Hernandez's employment.

Ms. Hawthorne continued, "The Board is committed to the Company's core values and to upholding an environment of the utmost respect and integrity. We remain confident in the strategy and the long-term business plan of the Company."

SIGMA launches seven Art prime lenses for Sony E-mount https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/19096/sigma-launches-seven-art-prime-lenses-for-sony-e-mount Wed, 28 Feb 2018 04:17:18 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 19096@/talks/discussions

SIGMA Corporation is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of interchangeable lenses for the Sony E-mount digital camera series with full-frame image sensors. SIGMA will gradually introduce the lenses as members of the Art line, which offers photographers the highest level of optical performance.

image

While offering the same high-performance optical design as other lenses in the Art line, the new Sony E-mount models will feature a newly developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed. In addition, these lenses will be compatible with Sony's Continuous AF (AF-C) and high-speed autofocus, which are not addressed by SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11. Like the converter MC-11, the lenses will be compatible with in-camera image stabilization and in-camera lens aberration correction, which includes corrections for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, and distortion.

The lineup will include the Art line set of seven prime lenses covering 14mm to 135mm. It will also include two models that SIGMA will be exhibiting at CP+ 2018: 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO | Art and 105mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art (launch date TBD). Further, SIGMA plans to introduce additional Sony E-mount models in the Art line going forward.

Note: This product is developed, manufactured and sold based on the specifications of E-mount which was disclosed by Sony Corporation under the license agreement with Sony Corporation.

Key features

  1. Autofocus tuned for each lens
Thanks to an autofocus drive control program tuned for each lens and high-speed data transmission, the lenses will offer high-speed autofocus at the same performance level as that of a lens designed exclusively for mirrorless cameras. In particular, in E-mount cameras offering Sony's Fast Hybrid AF, AF-C mode will deliver exceptional subject following performance. Moreover, autofocus will remain extremely precise even in those E-mount cameras offering only contrast AF.
  2. Compatible with in-camera image stabilization
The lenses will be compatible with in-camera image stabilization. The Sony E-mount camera senses the focal length of the lens and automatically optimizes image stabilization performance.
  3. Data loaded for compatibility with in-camera aberration correction The lenses will be fully compatible with in-camera aberration correction, which includes corrections for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, and distortion. By matching corrections to the optical characteristics of the lens, this function takes image quality to an even higher level.
  4. Native mount for a more rigid and stable feel Making the mount native to the lens makes possible a more rigid and stable feel to the lens. Featuring a special surface treatment to enhance strength, the brass bayonet mount offers a high-precision fit and exceptional durability. The mount connection area incorporates rubber sealing for dust- and splash-proof construction.
  5. Available Mount Conversion Service This service converts the mount of SIGMA lenses to that of a different camera body, allowing photographers to continue using their favorite lenses over the long term regardless of camera system.

Affordable 8K LCD TVs to come this year, will use AUO panels https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/19068/affordable-8k-lcd-tvs-to-come-this-year-will-use-auo-panels Thu, 22 Feb 2018 02:30:55 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 19068@/talks/discussions

AU Optronics (AUO) will begin to ship 8K TV panels in sizes ranging from 65- to 85-inch in the first half of 2018 according to Liao Wei-lun, president of AUO's video products business group.

Shipments of TV panels in 65-inch and above sizes will be a major focus of AUO as global sales of 65- and 70-inch TVs and display products are expected to grow 40% and 50% on year, respectively, in 2018, Liao reasoned.

The penetration rate of 65-inch and above sizes of 8K TVs will start gaining momentum in 2018 and reach 10% in 2020, Liao said, adding that AUO will begin volume production of 8K TV panels soon to cash in on the emerging trend.

Demand for 4K TV panels will also remain strong in 2018 as the penetration of 4K TVs is expected to hike to over 40% in 2018, from 30% a year earlier, with 4K displays becoming a standard for 50-inch and larger TV products in the year, Liao added.

Good news.

Sony Corporation today announced that it has developed a 1.46 effective megapixel back-illuminated CMOS image sensor equipped with a Global Shutter function*1. The newly developed pixel-parallel analog-to-digital converters provide the function to instantly convert the analog signal from all pixels, simultaneously exposed, to a digital signal in parallel. This new technology was announced at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) on February 11, 2018 in San Francisco in the United States.

    image

CMOS image sensors using the conventional column A/D conversion method read out the photoelectrically converted analog signals from pixels row by row, which results in image distortion (focal plane distortion) caused by the time shift due to the row-by-row readout.

The new Sony sensor comes with newly developed low-current, compact A/D converters positioned beneath each pixel. These A/D converters instantly convert the analog signal from all the simultaneously exposed pixels in parallel to a digital signal to temporarily store it in digital memory. This architecture eliminates focal plane distortion due to readout time shift, making it possible to provide a Global Shutter function1, an industry-first for a high-sensitivity back-illuminated CMOS sensor with pixel-parallel A/D Converter with more than one megapixel3.

The inclusion of nearly 1,000 times as many A/D converters compared to the traditional column A/D conversion method2 means an increased demand for current. Sony addressed this issue by developing a compact 14-bit A/D converter which boasts the industry’s best performance4 in low-current operation.

Both the A/D converter and digital memory spaces are secured in a stacked configuration with these elements integrated into the bottom chip. The connection between each pixel on the top chip uses Cu-Cu (copper-copper) connection*5, a technology that Sony put into mass production as a world-first in January 2016.

In addition, a newly developed data transfer mechanism is implemented into the sensor to enable the high-speed massively parallel readout data required for the A/D conversion process.

    Main Features

Global Shutter function achieved in a high-sensitivity back-illuminated CMOS image sensor by using the following key technologies: Low-current, compact pixel-parallel A/D converter. In order to curtail power consumption, the new converter uses comparators that operate with subthreshold currents, resulting in the industry’s best-performing4, low current, compact 14-bit A/D converter. This overcomes the issue of the increased demand for current due to the inclusion of nearly 1,000 times as many A/D converters in comparison with the traditional column A/D conversion method2.

    Cu-Cu (copper-copper) connection
To achieve the parallel A/D conversion for all pixels, Sony has developed a technology which makes it possible to include approximately three million Cu-Cu (copper-copper) connections*5 in one sensor. The Cu-Cu connection provides electrical continuity between the pixel and logic substrate, while securing space for implementing as many as 1.46 million A/D converters, the same number as the effective megapixels, as well as the digital memory.

    High-speed data transfer construction
Sony has developed a new readout circuit to support the massively parallel digital signal transfer required in the A/D conversion process using 1.46 million A/D converters, making it possible to read and write all the pixel signals at high speed.
