Custom WB with BMCC Speedbooster is a bad idea on GH4 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10905/custom-wb-with-bmcc-speedbooster-is-a-bad-idea-on-gh4 Mon, 28 Jul 2014 14:50:51 +0000 0range 10905@/talks/discussions This little bastard...

I now own 3 cameras. The GH2, BMPCC and the GH4. For the Blackmagic I bought the BMCC Speedbooster, so I can use it on the BMPCC and the GH4, if I would buy it any time soon. And I did - today. Excited about the Speedbooster working with my Nikon Glass and getting away with no vignetting in UHD mode (crop factor 2,3 becomes 1,472 like APS-C), I just wanted to give the Custom White Balance a try, since I had to dial in the correct color temperature on the BMPCC, I wanted the luxury back, to have the right settings at the push of a button.

So I was just about to flex my finger and set Custom WB... when I remembered... my GH2 always using the mechanical Shutter, when taking the custom WB. Cause I want to use the GH4 a little longer, I dismounted the BMCC Speedbooster and took the Custom Whitebalance.

Long story is short: Even with activated Electronic Shutter, the GH4 still uses the mechanical Shutter for Custom White Balance and can be damaged with attached BMCC Speedbooster. Since the SB touches the inside of the Shutter Casing and even leaves a mark there due the pressure of the adapter, when it´s attached.

So better stay with the Blackmagic way of dialing in the color temperature or use your MFT Kit Lens - if you own one - to do the work.

By the way.... am I the only one who sets custom WB? Cause I didn´t read about this issue anywhere else. At least the BMCC Speedbooster Users don´t care much about it and stick with automatic WB ;-)

That´s it for today!

Cheers from Austria! Stefan

Hoya EVO Antistatic filters https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10873/hoya-evo-antistatic-filters Wed, 23 Jul 2014 14:50:32 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 10873@/talks/discussions

Hoya engineers have developed a new ANTISTATIC coating that acts like a force field around the filter to repel dust. Perfect for environments where dust is common, these filters require less frequent cleaning and maintenance than traditional filters. Additionally, the hardened, antistatic top-layer is water repellent, stain and scratch resistant, and cleans easily when smudges or fingerprints are introduced to the surface. The filter’s UV properties filter unwanted ultra-violet rays, reducing haze and increasing clarity.

The new EVO ANTISTATIC professional filters are made in Japan using hand selected silicates that are carefully smelted and blended to yield high performance optical glass. Hoya then uses extreme care and precision to apply the Improved 16-layer Super Multi-coating formula which greatly reduces or eliminates reflections on the surface of the glass and yields a 99.8% light transmission rate. This means the filter has virtually no effect on the color balance, contrast, or clarity of the final image.

The filters features a lightweight, one-piece, low-profile aluminum frame to house the glass. This one-piece design allows the filter to maintain perfect parallel alignment to the sensor plane for maximum sharpness, while the low-profile form eliminates vignetting when used on ultra-wide-angle lenses.

  • NEW Antistatic coating repels dust
  • 99.8% Light Transmission
  • Scratch resistant – Hardened coating protects against everyday wear
  • Stain resistant – Protects against exposure to ink, markers etc.
  • Water repellent – Water beads up and wipes away easily
  • Fingerprints and smudges wipe away cleanly
  • Filters unwanted UV light before it reaches the sensor
  • Hoya’s Professional-grade optical glass
  • Hoya exclusive one-piece, low-profile filter frame with front filter threads

Fotodiox, Excell, Lens Turbo analogs for m43 and NEX https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7356/fotodiox-excell-lens-turbo-analogs-for-m43-and-nex Wed, 26 Jun 2013 01:57:22 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 7356@/talks/discussions image

The Vizelex Light Cannon from Fotodiox Pro is an advanced lens mount adapter that not only attaches a Nikon Lens (including G & D type) to a Micro 4/3 (MFT) camera body, but has added light focusing optics which makes the lens wider by a 0.72x factor and increases the maximum aperture of the lens by 1 stop. This effectively allows use of your 35mm lenses on a crop sensor camera and not lose the angle of view normally associated with lens mount adapters (ie, 50mm lens stays roughly a 50mm lens equivalent).

Additionally, this light focusing optic gives a faster than normal aperture, turning a f/2.8 into the equivalent of a f/2.0; perfect for shooting in low light situations, when you need a faster shutter speed, or want a lower ISO sensitivity! The blue dial on the adapter is an aperture adjustment dial which allows the iris to be adjusted on even the Nikon G & D lenses; on older Nikon lenses with a aperture dial on the lens, the blue dial on the adapter can act as a depth of field preview lever allowing you to switch back and forth between wide open and stopped down to a certain f-stop.

As with all Fotodiox Pro series adapters, these adapters have been specially crafted to endure professional use. The leaf spring design in the adapter holds the lens tight to the camera body ensuring there is no play between the camera and the lens. The all metal design and polished surface is designed to guarantee a smooth mounting and long lasting experience. With unique styling, the lens mount adapter maintains a professional appearance. Although the lens will fit physically, automatic diaphragm, auto-focusing, or any other functions will not operate correctly while using this adapter. Because of this “stop-down mode” will need to be used when metering since the lens does not have the ability to have its aperture controlled by the camera body. You can shoot with manual mode or aperture priority mode. Infinity focusing is guaranteed

  • Crop Factor Gain 0.72x
  • Aperture Control Yes via Adapter
  • from $149

Electronic aperture lens setting before adapting https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10403/electronic-aperture-lens-setting-before-adapting Mon, 19 May 2014 00:36:05 +0000 atlzonlyplayer 10403@/talks/discussions Hey all, I am very sorry if this has been posted before, but I have a few simple questions.

I own a fotodiox EF-m/43 adapter with aperture control. Till now i was using a lens with manual aperture control, but Ive bought a lens which has electronic aperture. Should I have the lens opened all the way to the largest aperture before adapting ( It goes down to 1.4) or is it recommended to stop it down?

Also, if it is open all the way and I am controlling it with the fotodiox adapter aperture control...how does this, in your experience, affect the sharpness and depth of field? Does it act similarly to the way it would if used on a canon. Thanks in advance! :D

Nikon F to m43 adapters https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2492/nikon-f-to-m43-adapters Mon, 05 Mar 2012 15:57:31 +0000 WarrantyVoided 2492@/talks/discussions The go-to shop for good adapters, ciecio7, unfortunately does not list a Nikon F to MFT adapter. I did send some questions, but unfortunately I did not receive any answer. Apparently they do exist, Grue has one, but I can't sit and wait for years to come. I did consider getting some Canon to MFT, but this leaves the issue of a solid Nikon to Canon adapter, preferably one which allows to change aperture by means of a ring or so. (There do exist adapters with a confirm chip, but with the Canon to MFT this won't work anyway.)

Does somebody know another seller which offers the cheaper adapters, but has a solid check to deliver consistent adapters? I'd love to get an adapter with aperture control (manual of course) and a tripod mount.

Contax lenses to Canon EF + Speed Booster https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10258/contax-lenses-to-canon-ef-speed-booster Sat, 26 Apr 2014 09:37:21 +0000 spencerb 10258@/talks/discussions I have a Panasonic GH3 and am investing in some old Zeiss Contax Yashica glass. I intend to use the Metabones Speed Booster with them but also want to keep my options open in the future.

  • Safe Option 1: Buy Metabones Speed Booster in Contax/Yashica -> Micro Four Thirds mount. Connect C/Y Zeiss glass. Profit.

  • Theoretical Option 2: Buy Metabones Speed Booster in Canon EF -> Micro Four Thirds Mount. Adapt Zeiss C/Y glass to Canon EF mount. This allows me to share lenses with Canon bodies if necessary and also mount standard Canon EF glass to the Speed Booster as well. With the limited range of wide angle Zeiss C/Y glass available this also could make things easier. It saves me buying multiple $400 Speed Boosters.

Question is: Is there any reason NOT to do option 2? I know it will allow a greater chance of error in the adaptors, but will the C/Y -> Canon EF even mount to a Canon EF -> MFT Speed Booster? Is this entire idea completely stupid or have I stumbled on accidental brilliance?

THANKS!

Smaller 72-77mm filters are even cheaper (about $80-100)

If you get 82mm round filter to 4x4" converter

It'll just add $26 and for almost all lenses, even wide, 82mm is more than enough.

Here is small video on importance of IR ND (just remember that it uses extreme 128 ND filter).

Some time ago I wrote to Ryszard of foto-akcesoria.com.pl asking if he could make up an Eyemo-> M4/3 adapter. He replied:

I think it would be possible to make an adapter for MFT system. I don't know exact technical details of Eyemo cameras so you would have to send me one lens in order to make measurement.

He's in Poland. I'm in Aus and reluctant to post my lenses away. By some chance, does anybody live near have a lens they can show this guy?

BTW, you can get some very good high-end lenses in the Eyemo mount, from older Cookes to modern (ex-NASA) General Scientifics. They're cheaper than some other mounts and I suspect the lack of adapters might be one reason.

My adapter has a tiny screw inside the barrel that mounts to the camera. Is there any reason for it? I guess it is there to help to fit the adapter in case it is not 0.1 mm perfect or to fine tune focusing, but i´m really not too sure.
