14-140mm lens usage http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1046/14-140mm-lens-usage Wed, 28 Sep 2011 03:25:27 +0000 alcomposer 1046@/talks/discussions
I am sure that there is a topic here about this- however I can't find it after searching half the day.

I am wanting to know if the 14-140mm standard zoom lens is good for matte box usage etc... if not is there another lens? I mainly (only) use primes, so zoom would be just for documentary work. (so auto focus needed for run and gun)

Please let me know your thoughts, lots of guys on PV don't really have much nice to say regarding the 14-140, I have also used it and it is quite slow... :(

Thanks in advance...
@VK if you can find the thread that details this please take the liberty to post and close topic.]]>
1/2-inch ENG zoom lenses and mounting solutions http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5862/12-inch-eng-zoom-lenses-and-mounting-solutions Mon, 21 Jan 2013 21:08:50 +0000 balazer 5862@/talks/discussions The 1/2-inch format has an image circle diameter of 8 mm, which is very close to the GH2's 1080 ETC-mode diagonal of 8.3 mm.

1/2-inch format ENG lenses are made for 3-CCD cameras. The standard specifies an amount of glass behind the lens for the prism and color filters. It also specifies slightly different flange focal distances for green than for red and for blue. Since the GH2 has no prism and has its color sensors all in the same plane, these lenses are not perfectly matched for the GH2. In my testing, at wide aperture settings the image becomes hazy due to some focus aberration - I'm guessing mostly because of the absence of glass behind the lens. Stopping down to f/4 or so mostly fixes the haziness. In theory, the lack of glass behind the lens could be corrected with nothing more than a flat block of glass between the lens and the sensor. It would take more complicated optics to correct for the differences in the flange focal distances of the different colors, but I don't expect the longitudinal chromatic aberration to be very bad if this weren't corrected.

There are two 1/2-inch mounts: standard, and Sony. Most 1/2-inch lens models were made in both mounts. About two thirds of the used lenses for sale are in standard mount, and one third in Sony mount. I have attached sample images of the different mounts. The standard mount has a flange focal distance of 35.74 mm. The Sony mount has a flange focal distance of 38 mm.

ciecio7 on eBay makes a 1/2-inch Sony mount to Micro Four Thirds adapter: http://en.foto-akcesoria.com.pl/index.php/shop/product?idproduct=321&productname=1-2-quot-38-mount-mft

He also had a 1/2-inch standard mount to Micro Four Thirds adapter listed for sale, but I ordered the adapter and it was wrong. I'm sending my adapter back, but I'm sure someone could work with him to get him the proper specifications for a 1/2-inch standard mount adapter. The 1/2-inch standard mount is quite similar to the 2/3-inch B4 mount, except with a different flange focal distance. He already makes 2/3-inch B4 mount adapters.

Canon 1/2-inch ENG lens models:

  • KH: portable high def
  • H: portable
  • PH: studio/field
  • YH: portable pro standard def and pre-HD (semi-pro)

  • SX or SY in the servo unit model number indicates a Sony interface. IX, HX, or BX indicates a standard interface.

Fujinon 1/2-inch ENG lens models:

  • HS: premiere series high def, standard mount
  • HSs: premiere series high def, Sony mount
  • ZS: high def, standard mount
  • XS: high def, Sony mount
  • S: standard def and pre-HD

  • -38, -D38, -18, or -D18 suffix in the servo unit model number indicates a Sony interfaces. Suffixes with other numbers usually indicate a standard interface.

Standard definition lenses in most cases are more than capable of delivering HD resolutions, though not necessarily across the entire frame and at all focal lengths and aperture settings. HD lenses are made to a higher standard, and they cost a lot more.

Tascam DR-40 or DR-100 versus Zoom H4N: Sync issue? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9200/tascam-dr-40-or-dr-100-versus-zoom-h4n-sync-issue- Thu, 26 Dec 2013 14:31:29 +0000 Brian_Siano 9200@/talks/discussions Looking to buy an external sound recorder, and it's come down to one of the above. I'll be using this with a Panasonic GH2 shooting in America, which means NTSC and framerates of 24 and 30 fps.

It's a question about the sync issue. I do a number of long events, mainly plays, that run 90 minutes or so. I've been hearing that the Tascams drift out of sync after an hour or so. Haven't heard as much about the Zooms (save for people shooting PAL). So the first question is whether the Tascams have been fixed on this point, or if the Zoom H4N will or won't drift out of sync with my video.

I understand that I can plug these recorders into my camera's mike port, and record directly onto the video. If I do this, then I have two questions. The first is how the camera records this: does it record multiple tracks onto separate audio streams? Or does it consolidate it into a mono audio track? The second is whether the record can record its own multitrack audio file while it's feeding the camera something. (This'd make post-synching easier, and give me more options for audio mixing.)

SOLD: GH2 + Fujinon B4 ENG/Documentary Kit http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7727/sold-gh2-fujinon-b4-engdocumentary-kit Thu, 08 Aug 2013 22:31:53 +0000 BobbyMcDonald 7727@/talks/discussions Selling my trusty GH2 basic kit. This setup has covered the large majority of my video needs for awhile now, but trying to raise some extra cash for Burning Man, and cleaning out the old camera shelf. The camera is in great shape and comes with: 1 GH2 (obviously) grey, hacked (can return firmware to stock or any patch on request) 3 Panasonic batteries, all keep full charge, 1 Panasonic charger like new, 1 64GB Sandisk Pro Extreme SD card - this is the king, what you need for driftwood's and others top shelf patches. Has yet to fail me. 1 Fujinon Pegasus III B4 lens w/ rubber hood and hand brace 1 Cieco7 B4 -> m4/3 adapter with tripod mount 1 77mm circular polarizer, uv filter and homemade vari-nd

Everything is in great working order, and good to great cosmetically. The lens covers the equivalent of 31mm-438mm, a 14x range! This lens is a legend and a workhorse, not clinically sharp, but still holds great detail, especially in the center... a great match to the super sharp GH2. Comes with hand mount and the power zoom should work fine if hooked up to a 12v power source.

I'd prefer to sell as a set, but would be willing to part it out if the lens were to sell first. Asking $885

I'll get pics up tomorrow, I'm happy to answer any questions.

Thanks.

Zoom H1 vs Rode Videomic http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2095/zoom-h1-vs-rode-videomic Mon, 23 Jan 2012 18:59:33 +0000 sprinke 2095@/talks/discussions I'm just learning about this stuff, so be gentle with me, please.

Thinking about improving audio with my GH2. Originally I thought that for low-budget, okay, cheap (just a hobby for me), that the Rode Videomic would be a nice option.

Then I start reading here about audio recorders, and take a look at the Zoom H1. Seems pretty neat, and cheaper than the Videomic!

Now I wonder, why would anyone choose the Videomic over the H1, for a budget option? If I understand things correctly, the H1 offers more capability. You could mount it on the camera and run line-in to camera AND have headphone monitoring (with a splitter), or you could take it off the camera altogether for interviews, or attach a separate mic to it like a lav mic. Am I correct? Am I missing something?

The mechanical parts seem to have undergone some modification so the focus is a bit stiff, the zoom is smooth though. The OCT19-mount is fairly shallow so it will fit any OCT19-adapter!

It covers 4k all the way through on my Scarlet-X

Also, my budget for a good wide is around 200$. if anyone can suggest me a better vintage/new/used lens i would be thankful.

Parfocal, internal mechanisms, fast and well built. Optically it´s nice too, very competitive in this range of zooms. Very nice to chase stuff around with from afar, especially on a crop sensor (m43). Had a very quick test of it (mainly to see if it was parfocal), and although it´s not exactly cheap I will definately get one when the time is right. Didn´t try out the stabilisation but it seems good.

Looking for zoom lens recommendation with requirements http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6111/looking-for-zoom-lens-recommendation-with-requirements Wed, 13 Feb 2013 21:43:28 +0000 super_spyder 6111@/talks/discussions Hey there I'm looking for a recommendation for a zoom lens with the following things, but am having a hard time finding it. This is going to be used with a Preston FI+Z or C-Motion unit on an FS700, possibly with a speedbooster if it is a FF lens.

-Hard stops on zoom and focus, most likely a manual lens. I'd be afraid of breaking an AF lens even if it has hard stops.

-Zoom and focus rings can't change position while zooming or focusing

-Must be in the "normal" to wide range on the wide end, so anything with a 17 or 24 or 28 or 35 on the wide end. I don't care much about the long end.

-Constant aperture, is a major plus.

I do not need constant volume on the lens, or anything very fast.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hacked GH2 Works GREAT for Corporate Videos! MY EXAMPLES http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5669/hacked-gh2-works-great-for-corporate-videos-my-examples Sat, 05 Jan 2013 09:04:04 +0000 Luke 5669@/talks/discussions Hey guys!

Been watching this forum for a long time and decided it's time to share some of what I've been doing with Vitaliy and Driftwood's magic patches.

Here's a corporate interview style video shot using the older Orion v4 patch I think it was.

And here's a more recent one with Cluster v6 Drew Net.

Both videos were done with green screens, two fluro lights and a reflector for a basic three-point lighting setup on the subject, also using a rode lapel mic recording to a Zoom H1. Lens is just the standard 14-42mm.

I am simply blown away with the results. I've made sure to donate in return. Thanks guys!

smooth(er) manual zoom on Panasonic 14-140 (finally!) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5614/smoother-manual-zoom-on-panasonic-14-140-finally- Sat, 29 Dec 2012 21:12:29 +0000 village_west 5614@/talks/discussions I've always been envious of the motor zoom of prosumer camcorders , slow zoom in particular , via lanc. Never been able to get close to that with a 14-140 (on GH2) , until yesterday when I placed (by mistake) a rubber band on top of the focal scale and bingo: the zoom gets the right resistance and now it can be smooth (even on slow action, even on very slow action). almost as good as a lanc zoom controller set slow. the band should be large enough to cover the entire scale (broccoli bands are a little big and don't give a good resistance, but they can be shorten with a clip or something. The band that I used came from a softbox for flash). Works very well with a lensstrap zoom lever. Well, this works for me, just wanted to share.

Zoom lens for documentaries http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5005/zoom-lens-for-documentaries Sat, 27 Oct 2012 07:03:50 +0000 Leif_ivan 5005@/talks/discussions THE DP i work with generally found that the fast and Fantastic Olympus 14-35 2.0 changed aperture egen zooming.... Toooo bad since this lens really can perform as far as I can see. Well that is a 4/3 still photo lens so we Did not not expect more.

But now we tried the equally fantastic Pana 12-35 and same DP found the same Issue with this lens as well. Is this something well known? I have not heard it from other sources.

Is there any workaround that someone knows about or other zoom that can be used.

Now with an even better Gh3 Coming up and our AF101 still performing well it is à shame not to be able to find good tools. Prime - wise the situation is fantastic ... But Video zoom?

Now THE slow 14-140 does not behöver in this way. But focus by wire is not really good.

THE new Pana zooma just must work... But How can one prevent the aperture to change while zooming?

I'm looking for a good zoom for video work with the GH2:

-Any mount/brand which allows adjustment of iris is fine.

-Not bothered about auto focus, not bothered about zooming during a shot, unless there is a lenses which holds focus pretty well while zooming.

-Ideally 11-60mm ish but anything down to about 14-50mm would be ok.

-Max about f4, faster the better though.

-Minimal breathing while focusing

-Usable manual focus ring (Canon 24-70mm design would be fine)

-Good picture quality

Price isn't too much of an issue if all of the above are ticked (as long as it's not silly money) Olympus 14-35mm is too heavy by the sounds of it.

Thanks for any advice

For Sale: Canon FD Prime & Zoom Lens Package w/ ND Filter Set - Complete & Color Matched http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2148/for-sale-canon-fd-prime-zoom-lens-package-w-nd-filter-set-complete-color-matched Mon, 30 Jan 2012 19:26:12 +0000 cowpunk52 2148@/talks/discussions I'm selling a complete set of Canon FD Prime Lens + 1 constant aperture zoom with a screw-on ND filter set. I spent several months putting this lens set together, making sure all the samples matched as closely as possible with no visible color shift between them. This is a perfect budget manual focus lens package to go with a GH2, AF100, FS100 or NEX camera. The glass is pristine and they all function flawlessly. Each lens is also already geared with zip tie focus gears and are ready for follow-focus attachment and operation.

I just finished shooting a feature film with these lenses on a GH2 with the Quantum 9b settings created by @driftwood and the images came out f-ing amazing. This is a truly beautiful set of very high quality glass. However, I'm purchasing a C300 package now, and these will not be adaptable to that camera... so they must go, sadly. I hand-picked each of these lenses, and love them all. I'm 100% certain you will, too!

The lenses are as follows:

20mm f2.8 FDn

28mm f2 FDn

35mm f2 FDn

50mm f1.4 SSC

85mm f1.8 SSC

135mm f2 FDn

35-105mm f3.5 FDn

The ND filter set includes:

Tiffen 72mm ND 0.6

Tiffen 72mm ND 0.9

Tiffen 72mm ND 1.2

Tiffen 62mm ND 1.2

B+W 62mm ND 1.8

Step-Up Rings: 52-72, 55-72, 52-62, 55-62, 46-52

I'll sell the complete package for $1500, including shipping to CONUS. Payment is made by Paypal as a gift, or purchase payment with fees added. I would prefer not to separate, but if you want just one or two items, send me a PM with an offer.

I also have a Novoflex m4/3 to Canon FD adapter that I will add for an additional $100 if you want it.

Complete package will be shipped in a foam cut-out hard case. Two filter slings are included for the ND set.
