Zacuto EVF Pro viewfinder review

The Zacuto EVF is a high-resolution 3.0" monitor that offers the flexibility of mounting virtually anywhere. and is fully compatible with their line of Z-Finder's (Jr. and Pro). The Zacuto EVF was designed for dual-purpose use. With a Z-Finder attached it becomes a high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF) and without it's a 3.2" monitor that can be positioned where you need it. The EVF was designed to accept Canon LP-E6 Li-ion batteries making it compatible with the Canon 5D Mark II, 1D Mark IV, and 7D, and Zacuto figured out a way to make the battery last what feels like a lifetime. During the first wedding the EVF was left on during the entire 65 minute ceremony and again on a 4 hour beach shoot a few days later and the battery gauge is still showing 3 out of 4 bars. Incredible. It's a pleasure not to feel as if you need to turn it off after each pause in the action in order to conserve battery power.

On paper the resolution of the Zacuto EVF (800x480 resolution, 384,000 pixels) might seem inferior to the DSLR's 3.0" display which on some models like the 5DMKII, 7D, etc. is billed as having 921,600 dots. What many don't realize is that it takes 3 dots (Red, Green, and Blue) to make up one pixel so Canon's 920k dots equals a resolution of 640x480. Zacuto's EVF with its 800x480 display offers 20% higher resolution than the screens found in video-enabled DSLR's. This is one of the reasons it is easier to judge focus with the Zacuto EVF, even without using the built-in focusing aids, than it is using the camera's own LCD. The slightly larger 3.2" diagonal screen is also a true 16:9 monitor so you'll see everything in the frame and the EVF uses IPS panel technology and a tighter dot pitch (spacing between pixels) to make this an overall great monitor.

Despite the smaller size of the Zacuto EVF, when used with the Zacuto Z-Finder Loupe you have the best of both worlds. A big view through the lens and one that can adjust to any shooting situation. At another wedding this past weekend I attached the EVF to an articulating arm which allowed me to keep the screen in front of me while the camera was positioned about a foot above eye level on a tripod. As I tracked the Ceremonial Walk during the [Greek] Ceremony I was able to keep the subjects framed and in focus, despite the shallow depth-of-field. During the reception I made use of the EVF without the loupe for low-angle slider shots and also back on the articulating arm for the first dance, toasts, and high-angle dance floor shots.

GH4 "external" Handgrip

Hello,

I am planning to build up a Shoulder Rig for my GH4. I am pretty close to have all the research done, but there is one thing, that struggles me.

The GH4 will be resting on my shoulder and I have no very nice and easy way to access the main Buttons for setting Expsoure "ISO, Shutter, Iris". I´ve seen an "Handgrip relocator" from Zacuto for the FS700, so you can relocate the Handgrip where ever you want and have still the "One Hand Access".

So my Question would be, if there is some kind of "Third Party Handgrip" or an interesting LANC Solution for the GH4, that i can attach to my normal handgrip?

I believe know why Coppola chose the GH2 at Zacuto Revenge Shootout 2012

I watch some movies I subtracted master Coppola, including an excellent thriller 'The Conversation' of his early years. My first reaction just came out the first pictures is that it looks like when you combine the GH2 or GH1 with old lenses for its look and color, but the texture of the film different though but not as radical.

I think what Coppola to see shots of the GH2 was somewhat familiar with this movie great unknown but which he felt so proud. I'd love to ask him about it, but that is almost impossible.

Excuse me if this thread its trivial and offtopic, but wanted to share this impression.

And I recommend to all screenwriters and directors see this movie frugal, sometimes with limited resources and without a very complex story, but well told and surprising elements can do a good job in this case is a masterpiece.

Now that you've probably seen part 3 - any comments?

To me it was the most interesting part (except for the boring interviews, of course), as it finally allowed to really see the technical camera differences. And still, the GH2 was IMHO pretty good for its low price point, especially in the "wall shot".

BTW: At 00h:27m:44s, "Nancy Schreiber" looks kind of ... unexpected. ;-)

As for me, I am leaning towards the DP4: It seems to offer "more for less" (the 'flip' version is by default, switchable battery plates). Even though I haven't completely made up my mind.. yet.

In summary:

Image quality – superb resolution, accurate colour and smooth tonal range
Helps manual focus even when used as a monitor, good as small portable field monitor as well as EVF
Comes with an articulated Giottos ball-joint, so for DSLRs without an articulated screen (like the 5DMkII and 7D) it’s a big step up
Clearly visible live-view in really strong sunlight when used as an EVF
Can be offset on a shoulder rig in front of your eye, improving the balance of your rig
Lovely big eyecup and comfortable to use

Also now thanks to Vitaliy we can use ExTele mode via HDMI and have full monitoring for the first time with c-mount lenses in 1:1 crop mode!

Gorilla Plate for GH2

I'm looking for suggestions or "zacuto" gorilla plate for gh2. My setup consists of dslr base with D|focus follow focus system and zacuto gorilla plate. I found this setup to work perfectly on the canon cameras however, the zacuto gorilla plate is too big for my GH2 and there is no way to replace the battery with the gorilla plate screwed to the camera . The reason why I need "zacuto" gorilla plate for my gh2 is that is more portable and easier to slide up the camera from the dslr base with out touching the follow focus system. Any advice?
