Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra is a free orchestral sample library. While not as advanced or ambitious in scope as commercial offerings, SSO contains all the basic building blocks for creating real virtual orchestrations. It's primarily aimed at beginners, but also more experienced composers looking for something lightweight and/or portable might find it useful.

In-Depth Audio Tech Reviews http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8960/in-depth-audio-tech-reviews Tue, 03 Dec 2013 19:43:40 +0000 thepalalias 8960@/talks/discussions Over the years, I've contributed to Wusik Sound Magazine but last year much of the staff moved to a new magazine at www.soundbytesmag.net. Writing there has given me a chance to go really in-depth with my reviews, generally exceeding 3,000 words and sometimes over 8,000. I figured I would start providing links to them here in case they prove of use to the community.

VST CSOUND creation with Cabbage http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5643/vst-csound-creation-with-cabbage Wed, 02 Jan 2013 11:25:31 +0000 alcomposer 5643@/talks/discussions Been playing with Csound lately. Csound has been given a new lease of life with the remarkable Cabbage VST creation software: http://code.google.com/p/cabbage/

If you are interested in music check it out. Csound is a very simple language made up of more than 1000 Opcodes which allow you to send data (and audio) all over the place.

With Cabbage you can make a simple GUI for your effect- or instrument. Cabbage also comes with a tone of example scripts.

Cheers, A

Ones that I know:

Independence Free 2.5 (about 2GB library contaning many instruments), company had been aquired by MAGIX
http://www.yellowtools.us/cp21/cms/index.php?id=842

SampleTank Free (about 500Mb library)
http://www.ikmultimedia.com/sampletankfree/features/

East West / Quantum Leap - Symphonic Orchestra Free Edition (about 1.7Gb)
Not available for download from producer anymore, but easy to find.

Sample Players
NI Kontakt Player- http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/kontakt-5-player/ ,
Steinberg Halion - http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/vst/halion/halion_start.html,
Yellow Tools Engine - http://www.yellowtools.com/cp21/cms/index.php?id=842 (now part of MAGIX)
SampleTank - http://ikmultimedia.com/sampletankfree/features/
Liquid/Elastic ,

Note
NI Kontakt Player (their free version) allow to run only specially authorized libraries (who paid fees to NI) :-)
Otherwise it'll time out fast.
