I am a Wildlife Cameraman working for the last 10 years on a variety of Wildlife documentaries see link below for more info

Many years back I worked with the guys at Magic Lantern to create a add on to allow a Canon camera to be woken up from sleep and triggered to start recording all through the shutter release cable. We got some really great results on BBC’s Planet Earth II for Snow Leopards allowing us to capture never before seen footage and the camera being able to last about 2 months on a set of External batteries.

Times have changed since then and now we need high end 4K or even 6k in the camera traps. My question is anyone interested in developing an android app to sit on Sony Alpha Cameras to be able for it to be used as a camera trap inside the camera.

We would need the following:

Wake up camera from external trigger. Start recording 4K video for a set amount of time (determined in the camera). Any other signal from the external trigger is ignored until the set amount of time has been completed, after this time it’s counter of time will be reset to add an extra X amount of time.

Then the auto sleep can turn off the camera ready for another trigger

Thanks All the best

Snow leopard shots Captured by the Magic Lantern firmware from BBC PE II are on site to watch.

MIA: Where is Vitaliy?! http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16151/mia-where-is-vitaliy Thu, 08 Dec 2016 02:17:28 +0000 matt_gh2 16151@/talks/discussions It's been 4 or 5 days since anyone's heard from our dear friend and fearless leader Vitaliy. Inquiring minds are beginning to wonder where he is...and what he's doing? I've come up with some ideas - let's vote on which one you think it is and see who's right.

Option 1: He has a new girlfriend and they're on a 72 hour sex marathon consisting of nothing except sex, pizza, and vodka.

Option 2: He has joined the Proletariat revolution, and is currently entrenched somewhere with comrads, pinned down in a bunker taking heavy fire from some capitalists. Cell phone battery has died, so he can't access personal-view.com remotely. Waiting for backup to return home safely.

Option 3: He has decided to take a few days to chill and relax, waiting to see how long it takes for us to come looking for him. While giving his mind a rest and taking a long bath, he has a eureka moment, discovering a way to hack the GH1 to get 12 bit 4K at 256 Mb/s!

Option 4: The new tools including spectrometer have finally arrived and he has immersed himself in equipment testing. He has lost all sense of time. When we hear from him next, he will publish results of tests.

My guess is option 1, but for our sake I'm rooting for Option 3! What do you think?

20 Megabyte a second setting http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1169/20-megabyte-a-second-setting Thu, 13 Oct 2011 07:16:02 +0000 Ausboy 1169@/talks/discussions

Sorry but on the road for a few days so may be slow to respond. All the detail is on my blog. Dunno how to upload file here so if someone wants to download it and add it that would be great. In summary.................

Folks,

Once in a while a revolution occurs that sets up the little guys for success. For sooooo long it has impossible to get a combination of an affordable large sensor camera that is; good in low light, that has minimal aliasing, that has a great codec, that has interchangeable lenses, that is convenient enough to put in your pocket, that is small enough to shoot without attracting attention etc. That is until the GH2 came along. But oh the codec – what a disappointment. Although it was 24 Mb/sec AVCHD those of us who were used to HDMI capture were never satisfied. Mud, compression artifacts and poor colour grading potential. UNTIL NOW!!!!!

A well known hacker in the GH2 community called Vitaliy permitted me to be part of the HDMI beta testing team but it became clear that in camera recording was so much more convenient and recquired fewer tricks. So……….. I tweaked and tweaked until I came up with a patch that gives all wanna be indie movie makers quality that they only dreamed of months ago IMHO. This patch will in most cases give you sustained 20 megabytes a second data. That is close to Cineform data rates. In fact conversion to Cineform has a similiar data rate. Stock up on SD cards and batteries – your gonna love it!!!!! I have 6 now as the average data rate will be about 1,2 Gigabytes a minute. If the files do not span that means an average take of 3 and a bit minutes. You need the Class 10 Sandisk extreme 30 MB/sec cards HD Video. Avoid UHS1 cards for now. No real issues as far as stability goes as long as you follow the simple rules. Use manual lenses or use your Panansonic micro four thirds lenses in Manual mode and focus prior to shooting.

If you are interested in colour grading with Cineform looks check out my post here and I have included some free looks.

Thank you Vitaliy. YOU ROCK!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen. I Present to you the Holy Grail of independent movie making…………….. the Henry Olonga Holy Grail patch for the GH2

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The "Let's thank Vitaliy and Chris" thread http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/707/the-lets-thank-vitaliy-and-chris-thread Fri, 19 Aug 2011 09:27:15 +0000 mpgxsvcd 707@/talks/discussions
Again thank you and everyone else doing testing for your time and effort. It is amazing what this community has accomplished. Panasonic would never attempt to do what we are doing and yet Vitaliy and Chris have for the most part re-engineered the Stalin GH2 to be vastly superior to a stock model and it still retain all of its reliability.

Great job guys. Please keep it going if at all possible. I know you guys can get the other things(Clean HDMI, B frames for 720p, 25 FPS) to work as well with enough time and effort.]]>
