The generic name of the TV is Sony X800H, my model KD-65XH8096 being a European designation of the 65 inch with a certain color and shape of feet.

A detailed review can be read here: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x800h

Things that delighted me:

  • Image profiles are good "out of the box" but the image can be improved to near perfection after careful calibration; it is actually a pleasure to watch any kind of content on it!
  • It has an IPS screen with a large viewing angle,
  • The screen is flicker free, with backlighting white LEDs (not blue), an aspect that is easy to overlooked but very important for eyes and health!
  • It has a low latency of 10 ms and supports 4K 60hz in RGB mode, being very good to use as a PC monitor,
  • The matrix is very fine, pixels are observed at a distance greater than 50 cm from the screen,
  • As a PC monitor I use it at minimum brightness so I have no clouding problems (black is very uniform),
  • The sound is surprisingly good, the voice is clear and well defined and it offers a little bass,
  • When used as a TV, scaling the image to lower resolutions is surprisingly good due to the powerful image processing.
  • It has plenty of inputs and all HDMI ones are high speed 2.0.

Things I love less:

  • With an IPS panel, the ~1100:1 contrast is mediocre, the black is not as deep as it is in VA panels (where the viewing angles are smaller) or oled (which develops burn in over time),
  • Clouding on black can be seen at high brightness levels,
  • Due to the large size of the screen, you can see a small shift in color and brightness between the area where you stand perpendicular to the other edge; this small shift in color and brightness is visible only up close and only on evenly light shades, it's NOT noticeable in pictures, movies, games, etc.
  • A few days after the acquisition, a pixel remained hot (lit), but due to the fine matrix I normally do not notice it unless I look for it carefully or on uniformly dark backgrounds,
  • The corners have a very small vignetting,
  • Sony menus are confusing, poorly structured and the manual (non-existent in physical format) does not detail much of the functions described and is as poorly structured as the menus. It was "a lot of fun" to make it work in 4K 60hz RGB format, as the input had to be manually set to support this mode (nonsensical cause all HDMI ports support HDMI 2.0 high bandwidth) and only 2 of the image profiles "Game "or" Graphics" are sited for PC use (the rest of the profiles do not support RGB or 444); and obviously in the manual it was almost impossible to find accurate information, but luckily we have the internet. :)
  • A BUG: every time I close the TV while the computer is running, when reopening the screen it enters in 4:2:0 mode until I change the picture profile up from "Game "or" Graphics" to "Cinema" or above, then scroll down again to "Game "or" Graphics" profiles. I bet this bug can be fix in a firmware update if Sony acknowledges the problem and has the good will to fix it.

In conclusion:

I'd like it to be perfect, no TV really is, especially in the more affordable segment. After the effort to connect it to the PC in RGB mode, a careful image calibration and ignoring the small quirks it has, I honestly say that I'm very satisfied with it! It's absolutely fantastic to watch up close: movies, games, images, etc., on a 65-inch screen (a cinema experience). If I had to choose a TV in this price category again, I would buy it without hesitation!

Suggestions for a stationery camera at a music venue http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/24181/suggestions-for-a-stationery-camera-at-a-music-venue Sun, 02 Aug 2020 22:20:17 +0000 thiswayup 24181@/talks/discussions I've been asked to rig up a stationary camera for a venue as an output to some TV's via HDMI. On the odd occasion, they might record a few of the events (eg music etc) at 1080 (no 4k for now!) as they just want something they can edit quickly for social media. They saw my setup with a Panasonic GH5 and my 12-35mm f2.8 and wanted a similar quality (but cheaper).

I'm thinking I'll just set up a GH4 which is above the bar that they reconnect every time they have an event. Each event usually lasts about 8-9 hours. They want it to be as easy to plug and play as possible. Their budget is about $1250/£1,000.

I wondered if anyone has done something similar? Will there be any heat issues being kept on for 8 hours? Thankfully, they'll probably only record 2-3 hours of 1080 which shouldn't cause any space issues on the SD cards. Also since a GH4 has a micro HDMI connector, will there be any issues it failing after a while?

Any other suggestions welcome!

CAME TV wireless Follow focus http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14227/came-tv-wireless-follow-focus Wed, 16 Dec 2015 04:12:19 +0000 tired 14227@/talks/discussions This is a quick what's in the box video of the CAME TV Wireless Follow Focus. It's a great little unit, compact, quiet and does what it's supposed to - adjust focus remotely. I'm finding more uses than I originally thought and I can see it replacing my mechanical follow focus on most occasions.

I intend to make a series of these showing the unit in action and running a couple of tests regarding battery life, repeatability etc.

I have a short film coming up the the next couple of months where the final scene involves a slow track in on a woman on a bench, it's midnight, there's fireworks and she's crying - easy! The FF becomes a necessity here but after playing around with it, there are so many other situations where I can make use of it.

Interviews - the FF can be used to adjust focus during in an interview situation if you haven't got a camera operator to do the job.

Jib - If I plan a jib shot I set the foreground out of focus but with the FF I can adjust focus throughout the move.

I use a shoulder rig on occasion so I might try to set the transmitter up on one of the arms and see what happens.

If there's anything anyone want's to know or a test they're interested in seeing done - let me know.

Using a 4K TV as a Cinematic Background http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16504/using-a-4k-tv-as-a-cinematic-background Fri, 24 Feb 2017 09:37:41 +0000 andyharris 16504@/talks/discussions I was curious to see if the old ways of back projection could be updated with the use of a 4K TV. We thought that the brightness and refresh rates of modern screens could work well with a 24FPS camera.

Here's the results:

Have you got an Affordable (~ € 700) UHD 40"+ HDR IPS TV / Monitor recommendation? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16183/have-you-got-an-affordable-700-uhd-40-hdr-ips-tv-monitor-recommendation Wed, 14 Dec 2016 10:35:42 +0000 cas1 16183@/talks/discussions Hi,

I'm saving up for a G85, and with that I'm looking for a new 4k screen.

The screen is going to be used as a monitor for my pc. I like to have 40" +.

My priorities are:

  1. viewing angle
  2. colour accuracy
  3. NON flickering when set to low brightness
  4. latency
  5. HDR ready

My budget hovers about € 700.

Any recommendations?

  • Thanks!

Lens Modifying http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6498/lens-modifying Mon, 25 Mar 2013 14:58:37 +0000 producer 6498@/talks/discussions I've read and watched all the available info about modifying the lens Pentax/Cosmicar/Rainbow 8-48mm f1.0.

I just received Canon TV C-Mount Lens 8-48mm f1.0 which looks like Rainbow model:

http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q/210138-adapting-rainbow-h6x8-ii-8-48mm-f1-0-cctv.html

But the guides of modifying show difference between Rainbow and Canon at the thread construction inside.

Please anyone who has CANON 8-48mm f1.0 for help about the right modifying!!!

Big thanks in advance!

$1299 UHDTV Seiki 50" SE50UY04 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6658/1299-uhdtv-seiki-50-se50uy04- Wed, 10 Apr 2013 11:56:40 +0000 NickBen 6658@/talks/discussions We shall be testing this UHDTV 50" Monitor with Red footage shortly... no joke.

Picked it up today at Tiger Direct with 4 yr Square trade warranty (essential for early adopters)...

Will let you know how it pans out, astounded by the price, let's see the quality now...

Availabe at:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7674736

  • 3840 x 2160, 5000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio
  • 4K Ultra-HD 120Hz HDTV
  • Remote Control with Batteries
  • One HDMI Cable
  • Three HDMI Ports
  • Tabletop Base
  • Instruction Manual
  • The HDTV supports component and HDMI sources at 480i, 576i, 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 4K2K 30Hz on the 50” screen.
  • 5000:1 Contrast Ratio

Update 1: We had lots of fun today with this set. 4K and higher res Medium Format Photos look very good on the panel, as well as HD sources. Looks like a good inexpensive option for a UHDTV Computer Monitor. It is a basic panel, has inexpensive audio, two USB ports support playback of music and photos (Sorry, no video via USB). It has a scaler to fit height or width, and appears to give you back what you feed it... Garbage in/garbage out, etc.

BIGGEST PERK: IT'S PORTABLE!! Yes, it's slim and light enough for 1 person to move around. So far, it is an absolute steal at $1299 for April 2013...

You need to feed it an UHDTV signal over HDMI to get "4K" display of video. We have not had a chance to calibrate it yet, but it does look like a typical LED display, however with 4K resolution. Moving onto video display at UHDTV resolution next rounds...

UPDATE 2. I attached the 3840x2160 at 30Hz setting photo with one of my favorite websites while showing the Prometheus landed (c) 20th Century Fox, in the center top. NOTE the DVD size in relation to the entire screen. 4 of those little rectangles is HD. Cheapest setup possible- AMD 7970 and single HDMI cable on WIndows XP... Who needs displayport or HDMI 2 or thuinderbolt, when HDMI 1.4a will do for film and photo editing today at this low cost?

CONCLUSION: the SEIKI 50" SE50UY04 is a winner for lowest cost UHDTV Video/Computer Display in April 2013! A great achievement, and I strongly recommend an extended warranty with any new technology like this.

2 great updates:

  1. A pro color Calibrator in LA works on the Seiki and tweaks it enough to pass as an inexpensive 4K Client monitor option

Finally decided to put my hacked GH2 to work and pursue my dream of creating a TV show! http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9264/finally-decided-to-put-my-hacked-gh2-to-work-and-pursue-my-dream-of-creating-a-tv-show Sun, 05 Jan 2014 16:30:45 +0000 stampfli 9264@/talks/discussions Here's our shameless plug for the TV show we are trying to fund raise. The show is about Stevie, a normal guy in his late 20’s, who lives in a mental institution and tells the stories leading up to how he supposedly went crazy. It's a mix of styles in the vein of "Seinfeld," "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," and "How I Met Your Mother."

We shot the fundraiser video on the Panasonic GH2 using Driftwood Cluster X - Moon T7 settings. Would love to hear feedback from you guys and if you can "like" our facebook page even better!

Wanted: photo Screengrabs of World Television EPG show guides http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6833/wanted-photo-screengrabs-of-world-television-epg-show-guides Sun, 28 Apr 2013 18:35:59 +0000 driftwood 6833@/talks/discussions Guys, I need a favour for a project Im working on and thought this would be the ideal place to ask for help.

I urgently need ORIGINAL photographic Screengrabs (RAW preferred) of YOUR country's TV 'electronic programme guide' (EPG).

I require stuff like platform guide overviews Freesat, Freeview, Canal Plus, Viasat, etc... for each country (exactly as the example shot below for Sky) so any of you who have the time (it'll only take a few minutes!) can you take a picture of the screen when you press the GUIDE button on your TV's remote.

Its for a global television project Im involved in. Trying to collect every TV box programme guide.

email: nick@driftwoodproductions.co.uk or dropbox/web link me to your images.

I would love to see them from all over the world but Europe is particular urgent :-)

Try to shoot at 50 shutter for PAL Europe and 60ss for for NTSC. Tripod it too if you cant keep a steady shot.

Satellite, Cable, or Terrestrial EPG guides only (not online EPGs)

Many thanks.

Nick

PS DON'T post them here as VK will get annoyed.

Broadcast Industry Acceptance. of GH Cameras http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5531/broadcast-industry-acceptance.-of-gh-cameras Wed, 19 Dec 2012 16:37:48 +0000 goanna 5531@/talks/discussions In a much belated review, the GH2 finally gets presented in TV Technology Magazine.

Until recently, the field has been absolutely ruled by Canon and Nikon, companies who broke the ground for hybrid cameras and acquisition.

How can such old news become news? Simply because it's an example of how the GH2 series can slip into independent use right under the radar of Industry.

Thanks anyway to writer Michael Hamish, especially for the personal-view.com plug. But the industry still gets the wooden spoon.
