I note that Vitaliy and others have in the past recommended the following memory cards, especially for higher bitrate hacks:

SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC 95 MB/s, 32 GB

SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC 95 MB/s, 64 GB

But today much faster cards with much larger memory are available. Are there any advantages/ disadvantages to using these newer cards in the GH2?

Here are the simple instructions.

Download HD_Speed zip file from http://www.steelbytes.com/?mid=20
Extract the HD_Speed.exe executable from the zip file and start it. It may hang for a while (Not Responding) when it starts up because it is scanning your system for drives but eventually will become available.
Set the parameters to Bits/Sec, BlockSize=32KB, Mode=Write and Duration 01:00.
Insert your blank SD card in your computer. HD_Speed will destroy all data on your card.
Choose the appropriate drive letter in HD_Speed and run the test. Be careful here, don't choose your other drives. When you're done, you'll want to format your card before using it.
Report your results in Mbps along with the following information:

Card Reader
Card Brand
Card Type (SD or SDHC or SDXC)
Card Class
Card Size (in GB)
Date Purchased
Card Write Speed (in Mbps) Current and Average

GH4 Memory Cards. What works and what doesn’t?

I have a GH4 and the following 7 memory cards. Listed in order of their theoretical speed. Some of these cards have failed with the “Motion Recording was cancelled due to the writing speed of the memory card” error message in the GH4 and some have not. If they failed then it was always in the stills mode while recording 1080p @ 60 FPS 200 mb/sec ALL-I video.

These cards all failed at some point

Eye-Fi 8 GB Class 6
Eye-Fi 16 GB Class 10
Transcend 32 GB Class 10
SanDisk 8GB Extreme SDHC 30 MB/sec Class 10
Transcend 64 GB SDXC UHS-I Class 3(Gold Plated Label)

These cards have never failed despite my best efforts to make them fail

Transcend 32 GB SDHC UHS-I Class 1
PNY 64 GB 90 MB/sec UHS-I Class 1

Please post your experiences with different memory cards and the GH4. Please only comment if you have the GH4 and have tried the memory card with it. No comments like “This memory card is better so it must work”. Just actual tests that you have performed yourself.

SDHC UHS Speed Class 3 cards for 4K

SD Association have announced a new high-performance option and symbol specifically designed to support a wide array of 4K2K television and video products.

A new Ultra High Speed (UHS) Speed Class 3 (U3) symbol will indicate products capable of recording 4K2K video and will operate exclusively on SDXC UHS-I and UHS-II memory cards and devices and SDHC UHS-I and UHS-II memory cards and devices.

The UHS Speed Class 3 defines a sizzling fast 30 Megabytes per second constant minimum write speed to ensure high-quality video recordings. This means 4K2K video, live broadcasts and content can be recorded on high-performance cameras such as Digital Single Lens Reflex (D-SLR), Digital Single Lens Mirrorless(DSLM), camcorders and video cameras and then played back smoothly. Consumers will benefit from a single card that is capable of meeting all of their video, photo, music, document and data storage needs.

“The world’s favorite SD memory card continues to evolve and meet shifting industry needs,” said Brian Kumagai, president of the SD Association. “Our new UHS Speed Class 3 standard will give consumers and businesses more flexibility and capability as the market shifts to 4K2K video formats. Both SDXC and SDHC memory card standards already offer the massive storage needed to support 4K2K video with enough room to store photos, music, documents and other data on a single portable card.”

New devices offering the UHS Speed Class 3 will be backwards compatible and will work with existing SD memory cards.

New standard speed between the memory card and the device can be up to 312 Megabytes per second.

I am new to the GH2 and the patches. It appears to be a lot of scattered info that is difficult pull together. So any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is my question... Which combination of SD card and patch work reliably together?

Here is my shooting scenario...

It will be mostly indoors (bar, bedroom), low light. I am using a Rokkor 1.4 50mm lense. We will use Adobe everything, on a Mac, for post.

The other big factor is that it will be screened in a theater. So quality is very important.

Thanks again as this camera is new thing for me and any advice is very welcome.

Where does the 'extra' data come from when transcoding?

I wasn't sure what category this fit in exactly....

This is something I've never quite understood, but have always wondered. Forgive my basic knowledge here, but I've tried to research this without a specific answer as to what is going on.

When I convert from an .MTS file to ProRes422 HQ, the file get's huge. Why is that? Where is that extra data coming from if it's not there to begin with? i.e. higher bitrate. I understand the codec has a standard bitrate it will always maintain, but why do it if the original file bitrate is so much lower?

For example, a stock GH2 mts for me streams at about 22 Mbits/s, I convert it to ProRes422 HQ, that same file is now playing at 216 Mbits/s. - With no discernible image quality difference.

What is going on in the codec that makes the file so huge? Other than workflow issues, why would you want to transcode from MTS? Does converting it to ProRes (or another codec) 'Unpack' the data in a more efficient way?

Why not use something like ProRes422 LT if you're starting from a much lower data rate like a native MTS file provides?

Transcend Ultimate 600x UHS-I cards

Okay so I bought a pair of Transcend Ultimate 16GB SDHC UHS-I cards at work (the 600x/90mb/s ones not the 86mb/s ones).

Since they were quite cheap at work.

Anyway, first test out of the box, using the SD card reader built into my laptop (which does have a USB 3.0 bus, but I dont know if the card reader runs over that, or how good the card reader is).

CrystalDiskMark, 2 tests @ 1000MB

Sequential read 70.19MB/s Sequential write 37.42MB/s

I bought these two weeks ago for my GH3 package. I ended returning the GH3 package but the Sandisk cards because the package has been opened can't be returned for refund. They've been only used once to for tests. No more than an hour total write on it.

They list for 150.00 each Will sell for 135.00 Shipping included.

Good cheap SDHC for hacked cameras

Hi All,

What are the best/fastest SDHC cards you guys have had success with for HD videos with GH1 without breaking the bank?
I'm looking to buy a class 10 but what brands/type(speed/transfer rate/kind) would you recommend? I'm not concerned about the size(GB) of the card but I am keen about the type of the card.

I'm your average/casual user.

Please let me know what's the best price/performance point for a good SDHC? Patriot seems good but then sandisk are supposed to be the best. Aren't they but there are just so many choices. Not sure which ones will even work with GH1. The site just says SDHC.

Sandisk 30mb - Dead?

Just flew to Vegas, my Zoom recorder is toast and so is one of my Sandisk 30mb cards. Won't mount on iMac, disk utility won't recognize it neither will the GH2. My SD Formatter won't pick it up either.

When I insert the card it's takes the screen to gray. "insert the card again"..until it says "try another card". Could have been fried by the TSA?

Any hope or is this card dead? Hate to toss the (at the time) $40 card.

During these tests you may find that some SD cards performs better than other even they are marked class10.
What is your experience with SD cards ?

interesting thing for us/settings GH2, for example SDHC667 (667x) but minimum 16MB/s so min. 16x8=128Mbit/s !!! for now already on the market and selling on xstra.eu see link below: "Pretec 16GB SDHC Card 567x Class 16" for €45,55 and there is 32GB version of this SDHC. BUT also on pretec the website there is SDXC 64GB, the cards all Class16, AND NOT the older versions (class10, 6, 4 etc.), here are the links:

The minimum thing of Class16 means minimal trasfer speed of 128Mbit/s maybe this can help us the minimum limit (on the lower side) is 128Mbit/s AND up to it's higher limits (specifiation of Pretec).

Now we can do guaranteed minimum of 128Mbit/s ??!! Sounds good, BUT the also the "64GB SDXC 567x" and the upcoming "16GB SDHC667 667x". Maybe helpfull for "GH2-settings" and data is not lost when power is down!!!

Well...I usually GENTLY place the SD card into my GH1, but the FIRST time I jammed it in...something happened. It started feeling weird coming out, then the camera would start having shutdown fail errors with no card in the slot while it would stay on before. I checked the card and found a jagged sliver at the edge missing. Now it started jamming up with another good card. I managed to find the service manual online, but the screws were so tight on the back body I was afraid I would strip them. Finally I took a bread twist tie, stripped it to the wire and was able to fish out the plastic scraps jamming it up.

Has anyone tried the Delkin brand class 10 SDHC card? It claims to have a 95mb/s read and 80mb/s write. It's a UHS-I card and is categorized as an SDHC card. I wonder if these will work with any of Driftwood's high-quality hacks? Spanning? Can anyone comment on whether they've tried this card out, or based on the specs if this card will deliver the goods?

GH2 Hack - File Sizes

About to pick up the GH2 and I'm trying to figure out the best option for cards. I haven't found many posts discussing file sizes.

I was wondering how much footage a 16GB card would hold (figured I'd be better off getting several 16GB then 32GB and keep copying the data to a laptop during a shoot).

Been looking at the 16GB SanDisk Extreme Pro (45mbs).

I'm guessing this also largely depends on which settings I will end up using. I'd be shooting at 1080p. Seems like 42mbit is popular but I've been seeing a lot of 176mbit popping up lately.

Basically I want to make sure I'm not going to only get like 8mins of footage per 16GB :)

We have recently learned that Transcend Information is voluntarily recalling the Transcend 16 GB Class 10 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS16GSDHC10E.
Items impacted by this recall were sold between July 28 and August 15, 2011. Due to a manufacture process issue, the item subjected to this recall might cause read/write blocking if the file size is over 4GB and the information on the card may not transfer.

The SDHC cards impacted have a serial number between 446136 0001 to 446136 9999 and 446121 0001 to 446121 9999. In order to identify the serial number of your card, please refer to the number in green on the right side of the back of the card.
