I learn something almost daily. While I've read posts in several places on this topic, I've not found consensus, but have run into issues. Here's the scenario:

I'm shooting 4K with the GH4 for all the benefits including punch in, pans, etc. Final output is 1080p. Occasionally I'll mix in some HD footage.

The last project I did was 6.5 mins, but much to my surprise was really dragging down my computer. I wonder if some of you with more experience can suggest a better workflow. I'm hoping to avoid buying a new computer for another year, but will do what I must when I can. Here's what I'm working with:

Premiere Pro CC iMac (Retina 5K, 27 inch, Late 2014) 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 16 GB 1600 MGz DDR3 AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB

To create a sequence, I've simply dragged the the first 4k clip to the timeline and let Premiere handle the settings accordingly. I edit, then export as HD.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and advice!

Which 4K to choose on GH4? (Too many notes, Mozart!) Talking heads shoot for 1080P output. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11488/which-4k-to-choose-on-gh4-too-many-notes-mozart-talking-heads-shoot-for-1080p-output. Sat, 04 Oct 2014 14:06:25 +0000 mschubb 11488@/talks/discussions I'm an experienced shooter (GH2, EX1, Canons, etc.) and just got a GH4 this week. Was expecting to ease into 4K, shoot camera tests, try out workflows and then do something "real" in 4K somewhere down the line.

BUT - an unexpected project just came up and I'll be shooting doc interviews straight away. Producer just found out I have a GH4 and asked about shooting 4K -- mostly to have better reframing options in post.

My first (and second) instinct is to say "not a good idea" because I know I can deliver beautiful 1080P with no surprises in post. And no one on this project has 4K experience. Post will be quick: Adobe Premiere CS6, 1080P timeline and minimal grading if any. All the shoots will be interviews, interiors, nicely lit. SD cards limited to existing Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mb/s.

Frankly, the real problem is that I'm overwhelmed by the number of 4K recording options for resolutions, recording formats and data rates, with little time to figure things out. (And no time for testing so I can have my own professional certainty.)

Anyone with GH4/Premiere experience have any wisdom or suggestions about "safe and easy" 4K recording format settings for this situation? Or links to good discussions/posts about merits of the various 4K format choices on the GH4?

Any advice, help or links will be much appreciated. Thanks!

Playback issues with Premiere exported footage http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/457/playback-issues-with-premiere-exported-footage Fri, 22 Jul 2011 00:32:13 +0000 azza_act 457@/talks/discussions Preset: H.264 HDTV 24p
1920x 1080p
Fps: 23.976
VBR: 2 pass
Target bit rate: 32
Max: 40
I've used this settings with the GH2 for six months, never had any issues. Now, when Pr finishs exporting i can play the H.264 file back in window 7 media palyer, no issues. But when i play it on both of my WD media players via my USB key, on one WD palyer its doesn't work at all and on the other is freezes on heavy pans of trees and the footage is just overall jerky (all of the footage was shot handheld, 24h. but on the PC it's fine)
Is it my export setting or hardware? ( hardware being the PS3 and WD players, which i'm worried about cos i can't use that hack on pro jobs fearful that the client doesn't have to correct/latest gear to watch the footage on. I give some of my clients H.264 files so they can watch on there TVs, computers and media players)

Any thoughts?

cheers
