GH's can take stills too and damn good ones. Let's share workflows, compare apps and results! I personally, organize a 40.000 photos catalog with lightroom. Lr is very versatile but there are times when even it's myriad tricks don't get there. Capture one is giving me pretty nice results (best color engine out there) which doesn't come as a surprise once I got best results with 4/3's ORFs; is also unbeatable at sharpness. Other times I go with raw developer; I like it's simple interface and that I can get closer to "traditional" analogic photography (i.e. DR) look/feel. WHAT ARE YOU USING?

Photo Printer 2017 recommendation http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16295/photo-printer-2017-recommendation Fri, 06 Jan 2017 14:26:23 +0000 Tommyboy 16295@/talks/discussions I would like to get some feedback on type of a photo printer people use to print high quality photos up to 19x13 prints and even bigger.

I come from an older version of Epson SureColor P600 Inkjet Printer which was the r3000 and had really good experience with it.

I've been always debating on getting laser printer to get rid off the expense of small inkjet cartridges however the paper we use for inkjet printer is not good for laser and I'm not sure if you can even get different type of paper for it (mate, satin, metallic, luster, glossy etc.)

Nevertheless what would be anyone's professional mid size pick for a photo printer in 2017?

GH4 and anamorphic http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14688/gh4-and-anamorphic Wed, 02 Mar 2016 12:34:32 +0000 Vpro 14688@/talks/discussions Hi to all !

Once again thanks to the ones that use their brain and take time to create some crazy good things !

I have a question about 4K photo mode.

For those who don't know, it enables to record 1:1; 4:3 and 3:2 image.

Here are the image sizes possible:

  • 4K UHD 16/9
  • 3840x2160
  • 4K Anamorphique 4/3
  • 3328x2496
  • 4K Photo mode in mp4
  • 1:1 2880x2880
  • 3:2 3504x2336

With the combination of an anamorphic lens it allows in 1:1 for example, to shoot in 2x time anamorphic with a 16/9 ratio. (not exactly 16/9, maybe 17/9 or 18/9…)

It is awesome because you can have the benefit of shooting anamorphic without being restricted by the "cinemascope" format. This format is nice but may not be appropriate for all movies and anamorphic also has other great attribute :

  • different bokeh.
  • wider field of view.
  • flares for those who like them.

So you'll tell me what's the problem ????

When you enter this 4K photo mode and want a live output via HDMI you need to have a 422 10bit output feed. This 422 10bit option disable the recording on SD card…

And as the output is via HDMI it can only output 4K…so all the various picture sized written above are downscaled to enter in a 4K size… For exemple the 2880x2880 become 2160x2160 in a 3840x2160 so you get a 4K UHD ratio with a square image on it, and so black recorded on left and right.

If you edit in 1080 HD, this 1:1 ratio recorded by 4K HDMIwith a 2x anamorphic, is used by 100% wide and 50% height… So that's not to bad but a little bit of deception as well.

I've tried this morning with a Atomos Shogun recorder I had a chance to use at a production company.

I really plan to test with a Odyssey 7q+ but I think it will be the same because all those equipment are made to work with standards and limited to 4K…

I don't understand why Panasonic made this limitation and in the same time gives us those possibilities (1:1, 3:2…)… They don't have a higher camera to be canibalized (like Canon with 5D and C300…) and they don't sell 4K portable recorders…

SO MY QUESTION IS : May GH4 be hacked ?

to allow 8bit HDMI output with 4K photo mode ?

or to allow recording 10bit 422 on SD ?

I understand the second option may be limited by hardware of the GH4 or by the speed of the SD cards.

The benefit would be 1- having the choice of the image ratio ! 2- having the ability to desqueeze image that I think is a necessity to have a good framing for the operator or other people of the staff/ client

Am I dreaming ? Maybe…but so sad to have the perfect tool for anamorphic and having to use it in a crazy/dangerous/not precise way !

And I don't believe the feature will be unlocked in GH5…

THX for reading! Best .V

RICOH KR-10 OR MINOLTA X-300s, what would you recommend, what should I BUY ? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13923/ricoh-kr-10-or-minolta-x-300s-what-would-you-recommend-what-should-i-buy- Mon, 12 Oct 2015 14:09:45 +0000 nycaroline 13923@/talks/discussions Hi!! I am planning to buy my first (manual) analog camera and trying to decide which one to buy. I have done a little research and discovered these two. I have a propositions of

RICOH KR-10 + RICOH XR RIKENON 1:2 f=50mm L

or minolta X-300s Minolta 3.5 28mm

When it comes to X-300s Minolta I also have a possibility to choose one of those lenses: MD ROKKOR 45/2 or MD Tokina 28/2,8.

Which one would you recommend? I am just starting my adventure with the analog photography and I need a good and easy gear I can get to know really well and appreciate extensively during (especially ) this year and the years to come.

Thank you for your thoughts and opinions !!!!

4K Photo Mode Bird Examples http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11582/4k-photo-mode-bird-examples Fri, 17 Oct 2014 12:58:23 +0000 ragnar 11582@/talks/discussions Here are a few examples of 4K Photo Mode frame grabs. I say frame grabs because I did the choosing in Premiere and not in the camera as I found grabbing the jpegs in camera too slow. Anyway, I recorded both regular and loop 4K Photo Mode video in both 30p and 24p. I then put those clips in Premiere and found the ones I wanted to export as frame grabs. I exported these frame grabs as .tiffs but I'm not sure that makes them any better than if I had just used the in-camera jpegs. For someone like me that basically takes pics of birds and insects in his backyard, this 4K Photo Mode is really something. It's an embarrassment of riches, it is. I can grab just that right shot for a high-resolution still. Thanks, Panasonic for this innovation.

Which of these combinations would be better in night photo? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9669/which-of-these-combinations-would-be-better-in-night-photo Wed, 19 Feb 2014 20:08:48 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 9669@/talks/discussions NEX (5N, 6, 7, A6000, A3000, A5000, etc) with the SEL 35mm f1.8 or Lumix GX7/GM1 with the PanaLeica 25mm f1.4

Although this forum is focused mostly in the video, my question is for still photography, but equally valid for the video. I love make street photo and usually I do night street photos with my NEX-5N accompanied by Sigma 30mm f2.8 and Zuiko 50mm f1.4 with ambient light and I doubt as the new sensor of Panasonic with the PanaLeica lens.

And I would think in this exercise, both cameras at ISO 1,600, 3,200 and 6,400 at the street in the night, both lens at full aperture, the PanaLeica is faster, but the Sony sensor is larger and has theoretically advantage. but the new sensor of Panasonic seems has cut the distance respect to the NEX.

Some of my shots.

Thanks!

Wanted: photo Screengrabs of World Television EPG show guides http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6833/wanted-photo-screengrabs-of-world-television-epg-show-guides Sun, 28 Apr 2013 18:35:59 +0000 driftwood 6833@/talks/discussions Guys, I need a favour for a project Im working on and thought this would be the ideal place to ask for help.

I urgently need ORIGINAL photographic Screengrabs (RAW preferred) of YOUR country's TV 'electronic programme guide' (EPG).

I require stuff like platform guide overviews Freesat, Freeview, Canal Plus, Viasat, etc... for each country (exactly as the example shot below for Sky) so any of you who have the time (it'll only take a few minutes!) can you take a picture of the screen when you press the GUIDE button on your TV's remote.

Its for a global television project Im involved in. Trying to collect every TV box programme guide.

email: nick@driftwoodproductions.co.uk or dropbox/web link me to your images.

I would love to see them from all over the world but Europe is particular urgent :-)

Try to shoot at 50 shutter for PAL Europe and 60ss for for NTSC. Tripod it too if you cant keep a steady shot.

Satellite, Cable, or Terrestrial EPG guides only (not online EPGs)

Many thanks.

Nick

PS DON'T post them here as VK will get annoyed.

Even if I choose the best settings the quality is really bad. There is a lot of aliasing which is not so visible on the original file?

I'm using Windows and Premiere pro CS5. The same thing was on Apple and Final Cut.

Is there any solution to that? I must have PHOTO JPEG as an output.

Here is a sample picture: http://shrani.si/f/g/a5/vhSletJ/test-gh2.jpg

still picture hacks for pany u43 - Possible to use auto-iso in M mode? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1394/still-picture-hacks-for-pany-u43-possible-to-use-auto-iso-in-m-mode- Wed, 09 Nov 2011 03:24:45 +0000 Derway 1394@/talks/discussions
For underwater photo, we always use strobe, and either A mode, (to maximize control of DOF and balance ambient and strobe exposure), or full M mode, to control blur and DOF, and balance the 2 exposures.

But with these pana cams, at these price ranges, there is no way to do the obvious. The A mode with flash forced on, is broken, since it allows 1/30 or 1/60 sec SS, which is way too slow, and will blur fish. Hoping that "intelligent ISO" will notice the movement, and do the right thing is absurd.

Is there a hack for specifying what the slowest SS allowed in "A mode, with flash" should be? (And bump the ISO if it is in auto, or just leave the exposure low, if not in auto ISO).

The alternative is to use full M mode, to specify SS and A for control over DOF, blurring, and ambient/strobe exposure balance. But this is so much easier in oly PENs, for example, which allow you to use auto iso in M mode, in 1/3 EV steps.

So, is there a hack for this? To make auto iso in M mode, set the ISO according to the meter reading? This sounds tougher.

Are these hacks possible? And for what cameras?

If you wanted to really beat the OLY/Nikon/Canon crowed, allowing us to use exposure compensation in M mode, to shift the ISO selection accordingly, would be awesome!

Is the firmware fully disassembled at this point? Can we all work on it too?

Thanks!
