In all the excitement with the GH3 (some 1200 replies in 5 days here only ) I wanted to start a new discussion, because I feel we (or at least some of us) have to face the reality. Should we buy the GH3 or start filming again with a camera that is made for it ?!

I have the GH2 for 2 years, have 3 different lenses and tried several hacks, I bought the Tascam DR-40 for sound (and other stuff). I needed a rig to hold everything, and now it looks stupid. If you are not doing fiction, (always) filming on a tripod, or in a studio and you also want to be fast and flexible (which is often necessary) it just doesn't work! (for me ;-)

Therefore I am considering a 'normal' video camera again. But which one? Next month the AG-AC90 will be available for only € 1800,= . I got it yesterday to try it out for 1 day. As there is no information (or footage) about the camera, I wanted to do some video comparison.

I compare footage of the AC90 with the GH2 (As we do not have the GH3 yet, but I don't expect it to be a miracle anyway ;-). It was not my intention to make good shots, but to put both cameras in 'hard' circumstances, such as high contrast, back light, movement, moire, rolling shutter effects etc. I did different tests and tried to keep equal settings, same shooting moments and movements, tripod / handheld, slow motion, rack focus / auto focus, daylight / low-light / dark, menu / settings. I only had the camera for a day (without a manual), so I don't know it well. Most images in standard settings were a bit too bright (but this can be adjusted in the camera).

The AC90 has a smaller sensor so less DOF (but in daylight can be achieved with a ND filter.) I didn't have one during testing (but I did use a ND in some shots with the GH2, so that is not a fair comparison). I expected the AC90 to do worse in lowlight but I am actually quite surprised!

The video is definitely not a 'scientific' pixel tweaking test. I know little about how to test GOP, I / P/ B structure, 4:4:2, peaking, dynamic range, AVCHD profiles, etc. But you guys do! @Vitaly_Kiselev @Driftwood @Ralph_B @cbrandin and others ?! I can put some original files online for some deeper analyses. What can you tell about the footage? GOP, I/P/B, etc? Is it hackable (or worth hacking ;-) to give it a bit more Mbs? etc?

I hope to open up the discussion (from the large sensor cameras such as the GH3) and look forward to hear everybody's opinion!

Ps1 Some shots in the end are only with the AC90 because it was too dark for the GH2 (with the 14-140 mm lens)

Ps2 I know YouTube is not good, but I also think it is only showing HD 25P as I rendered it 50P (and the orginal looks better and more smooth)

Sorry guys i'm pretty late but i bought this camera just a few days ago and i was looking for some older/newer patch to put on my camera. Besides i'd like to find a way to restore the stock firmware (because it was hacked). I couldn't find any popular firmware because are all offline (EOSHD, etc...). Someone can help me? Thanks guys.

Lumix GH4 Big Noise Problem

Hi guys, I got my GH4 a month ago, and upon doing some video tests I am experiencing huge amount of noise in blacks and shadows. Even in bright daylight when i do some tests and i have something black in the video (dress, camera bag) even on ISO 400 it starts to get really big, ISO 800 almost unusable.

Anyone experiencing the same problem? Might be a faulty sensor from Panasonic? I am primarily shooting on Cine-D profile, no additional adjustments, but the problem is on Standard profile as well.

My iDynamic and iResolution is OFF.

I am really frustrated, I was expecting a better video that this noisy ants from GH4, anyone please help?

GH4 - Peaking focus when using ipad and image app software

Hello, was wondering if anyone else has had an issue where when using the wifi app on an ipad - focus peaking works, but as sonn as the camera is set into record ( video ) the focus peaking disappears on the ipad. I am able to change the manual focus while record but can't see any peaking. The camera lcd does show it. Is this a software glitch or is it something I have set wrong? I just purchased the GH4 and tested it at a family wedding I attended yesterday. My plan was to set-up the shot and connect the ipad and just sit in the audience with my wife. The shot was including the bride and groom and the minister in 4k. As each spoke I wanted to change the focus slightly to bring each into focus as the minister was a few feet further from the camera. In post I could drop the footage into a 1080 project and pan or enter closer shots through cropping etc. Once the ceremony started I quickly reallized that manually focusing from the ipad without peaking was close to impossible. lesson Learned.

Clownfish Eggs. GH4 underwater with Olympus 12-50mm

I shot these saddleback clownfish tending their eggs with a Panasonic GH4 in a Nauticam NA-GH4 housing. I used an Olympus M.Zuiko ED 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 EZ lens in the special Nauticam port that allows switching to the 43mm macro mode.

I love the panning and cropping capability that 4K gives me when publishing in 1080p. The slow zooms at the start and end were done in post and the most closeup shot at 0:43 was just a straight crop to 1080.

GF2 Patch wont exceed 1.1

Hi a newbie here trying to apply the PTool patch to my GF2. Followed all instructions and things go fine until I get to the 'Body version up' screen on my camera. Despite changing the new patched .bin filename to GF2__V12.bin and putting it in the SD root directory Version>>>1.1 is the only option showing. After selecting 'Yes' the menu obviously says 'Version up ongoing' but I am left with the standard 1.1 firmware.

I have formatted the SD before and afterwards and have tried every option I can think of (downloaded new PTools, used a variety of different digits V20 etc) and no closer after several nights of trying to figure this out

Im using an 16 gb Sandisk SDHC class 10 card

I have searched high and low for anyone with a similar GF2 issue in these forums to no avail. Apologies in advance if I have posted this in the wrong place. But any help or direction would be much appreciated!

Panasonic Image App phoning home

Today I test-installed the Panasonic image app for Android, closed the firewall for the device and had a look at the network traffic whether and if so whereto it "phones home".

Without being configured/instructed by the user to do anything on the network, the app (right after pressing the "cancel" button on the initial camera connect screen - didn't want to connect to the camera at this time) places HTTP POST requests with "lumixclub.picmate.jp". At least if that URL is unreachable, the app will also try to contact "panasonic.net" via HTTP.

Obviously, I won't let my firewall allow this unsolicited "phoning home". I'm not a member of any "Lumix club", I don't intend to become one, and I do not want to share any information about my camera or my images with anyone at Panasonic.

It's a plague how electronics manufacturers today abuse your InterNet connection as they like without asking for permission and without having any reason to do so.

GH4 wake from sleep with remote

I need to be able to get a GH4 wake up from sleep mode and go into record from the mini jack remote socket. I've tried this with the sleep mode set to "on" and have found that I can't wake it up from sleep mode using the remote. I am told there maybe a hack available to circumvent this. I want the camera to go to sleep to save power but then quickly wake up and go into record. Do any of the firmware updates released by Panasonic modify this function? is there hack or another workaround? thanks
