Ultra wide low light option for GH4 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15971/ultra-wide-low-light-option-for-gh4 Mon, 31 Oct 2016 10:54:19 +0000 Irfan 15971@/talks/discussions Hi there Im looking to get lens for shooting underground parties. I already own Lumix 12-35 2.8 and 20mm f1.7. Still Im not satisfied with them in low light. I would love something that is wider (7mm) and faster for gigs shooting. Fixed lenses with manual aperture and focus are not problem to me. But Im opened to any solution. Thanks!

BMCC EF vs Sony A7s for a feature film with a lot of night shoots? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11517/bmcc-ef-vs-sony-a7s-for-a-feature-film-with-a-lot-of-night-shoots Wed, 08 Oct 2014 02:33:24 +0000 IronFilm 11517@/talks/discussions How does the A7s and the BMCC compare against each other?

Because I've just joined on as the DoP to shoot a feature on a BMCC, but given the nature of the film (shooting most of the time late at night), am wondering if a Sony A7s is better.

Am curious about some direct comparisons between an A7S and a BMCC at night, and how they'd be able to grade, and how they'd be used in practise with lighting set ups (as if we can use a smaller lighting kit, that might help mitigate some of the cost of an A7S), their look, etc.

As if so, I might then recommend to the director trying to find space in the tiny budget to switch to a Sony A7S instead.

What I really wish Sony would do is make something like an A7S version of the Sony A5100. So perhaps an APS-C version with merely a 5 megapixel sensor and the same amazing low light performance as the A7S but with the cheap price of the A5100!

As I don't need a "full frame" sensor, neither do I need more than 5 megapixels so as to have enough for 4K video. I'm content with 1080p.(after all, even with the A7s, most are not shooting 4K because it doesn't do internal 4K)

Unfortunately I don't think a 5 megapixel camera would go down well at all with the typical 2014 consumer, even though I've shot plenty with my old Nikon D50 which was only 6 megapixels. So I think 5 megapixels would do just fine for casual photography, especially as it would be a very very good 5 megapixels. (plus of course I wouldn't be getting it for photography, but video)

Which of these combinations would be better in night photo? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9669/which-of-these-combinations-would-be-better-in-night-photo Wed, 19 Feb 2014 20:08:48 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 9669@/talks/discussions NEX (5N, 6, 7, A6000, A3000, A5000, etc) with the SEL 35mm f1.8 or Lumix GX7/GM1 with the PanaLeica 25mm f1.4

Although this forum is focused mostly in the video, my question is for still photography, but equally valid for the video. I love make street photo and usually I do night street photos with my NEX-5N accompanied by Sigma 30mm f2.8 and Zuiko 50mm f1.4 with ambient light and I doubt as the new sensor of Panasonic with the PanaLeica lens.

And I would think in this exercise, both cameras at ISO 1,600, 3,200 and 6,400 at the street in the night, both lens at full aperture, the PanaLeica is faster, but the Sony sensor is larger and has theoretically advantage. but the new sensor of Panasonic seems has cut the distance respect to the NEX.

Some of my shots.

Thanks!

Canon's new full frame sensor for see in the dark http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6352/canons-new-full-frame-sensor-for-see-in-the-dark- Wed, 06 Mar 2013 23:55:24 +0000 amateur 6352@/talks/discussions Frustrated with how your camera’s CMOS sensor performs in dimly-lit situations? Canon has just announced a new CMOS sensor that’ll put a smile on your face. It’s a new 35mm full-frame sensor that’s designed specifically for capturing video in “exceptionally low-light environments.” Canon claims the sensor can capture high quality video with high-sensitivity while keeping noise very low.

Here’s how sensitive the new sensor is: it will reportedly be able to see meteor shows, rooms lit with incense sticks, and scenes lit only by moonlight.

25mm F/0.95 Voigtlander - Shooting in the dark http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2621/25mm-f0.95-voigtlander-shooting-in-the-dark Mon, 19 Mar 2012 15:08:24 +0000 Alexauwa 2621@/talks/discussions Hi everyone,

I am shooting on the Voigtlander 25 mm f0.95. I've tried several shots, insight and outsight. I've noticed that in some parts the dark areas were absolutely clear, no noise at all, but in some where were. I've keep ISO between 320 - 640, f0.95.

How do I get, even if there is less light, the most best possible result - here a clean picture? Do I have to raise ISO in order ta achieve better results? (Sensor need more light sensitvity to bring out details, can you shoot on too low ISO?) I always thought: lower IS0 value= better picture quality.

How do you handle night shoots, any tricks? Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks, Alex

After Effects from a N00b http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1906/after-effects-from-a-n00b Mon, 02 Jan 2012 09:47:38 +0000 itimjim 1906@/talks/discussions
Anyway, in an effort over Christmas, having a little time to myself, I decided to embark on learning a bit more about After Effects. And what better footage to work on than our incomplete short. We'd done a few edits and quick grades, but nothing serious, so now was the time.

First of all, the script called for this to be set at night time, and we'd shot in the daylight. Plus, there was supposed to be a character that magically appears in the garage, and we'd left the bloody side door open! We also wanted to add some form of special effects, knowing full well it would look cheesy, we just didn't want it to look like we'd drawn them on with crayons.

I've put together a few screencasts of our learning process and what we did, and I just thought they might be useful to anyone that is very new to all of this. These are by no means tutorials though, just commentary around what we did, why and our learning experience.

After Effects Door Removal Clone Tool (Part 1)

After Effects Door Removal Clone Tool (Part 2)

Learning After Effects Commentary: Crop, Levels, Day for Night

Learning After Effects Commentary: Light Effects and Motion Tracking

And here was the result of my learning efforts, which I was quite pleased with considering how much of a novice I am.

Camera: Panasonic GH2 (Unhacked)
Lens(es): Panasonic 14-140 4-5.8
Software: After Effects/Premiere Pro CS5.5, 5DtoRGB Batch, Red Giant (Looks, Shine), Video CoPilot (Optical Flares)

Hope its useful to someone.
