Any tips for shooting my first music video? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4191/any-tips-for-shooting-my-first-music-video Thu, 09 Aug 2012 18:49:56 +0000 jimtreats 4191@/talks/discussions Hi folks,

I've got a local band interested in shooting a music video or two with me after I showed them some footage I got of a small gig of there's shot handheld live with a single camera.

I need to flesh it out with them some more, just exactly what sort of things they're looking for but thought it'd be a nice thing to ask if anyone here had any tips about attempting my first one?

I think we'll be shooting multiple takes with the band miming over the top of a sync track which will be used for the actual audio in the final video. I guess I'm wondering first about the best way to tackle the syncing issue. I'll record with the camera the sound in the room so should be able to here this sync track and sync all the clips to the actual music properly before I start editing... Wondering the best way to go about that tho, obviously can't rely on a clapperboard as such, and when the artists start miming to the track I'll likely hear they're instruments over the sync track so I wonder if having a small bit of un-mimed to music at the front of every take may be the best idea for having something clear to sync with.

I'll try to edit with FCPX, I guess it's multicam work of sorts, not sure if that update dropped.

Who knows how it'll go, I look forward to trying, and would greatly appreciate any suggestions from anyone else on here who's more experienced in these matters.

Cheers

Jim

Background music, jingles, loops, scoring, fx etc http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3549/background-music-jingles-loops-scoring-fx-etc Mon, 11 Jun 2012 17:24:35 +0000 zigizigi 3549@/talks/discussions А friend of mine introduced me to Apple Logic which has a great loops/fx/jingles library. All sorted by genres, bmp, moods etc. I find it a very convenient construction set for quickly creating music for video needs.

I'm looking for a PC alternative. I use Vegas for video, Cubase for music, but since I'm no longer in audio production I find Cubase being way too complex instrument for my basic video needs. I don't want to program custom drum loops and create midi score from scratch, tweak EQs and FX for hours - all I need is a quickie-bricky loop based construction toy where I can drop few loops and pre-made fx on a timeline to create a jingle for an advert for instance.

Any recommendations? Few years ago I checked Sony Cinescore before it got discontinued and SonicFire but I found them to be not as elegant as Logic. Any progress in this realm ever since?

There was a hailstorm here last week. Luckily we had the camera with us at the right time. Our friends had a really good time playing in the rain, we tried to capture some of the enjoyable moments and thought of making it into a small music video. Also this is the first time we tried to pull off some ultra slow motion shots with our Canon 550D. Hope you all like it. Thanks

GH2 Slow Motion Music Video http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2513/gh2-slow-motion-music-video Tue, 06 Mar 2012 23:48:22 +0000 deturbanator 2513@/talks/discussions

Unfortunately the slow motion of the video did not come out so prominently. I had the singer sing his song 2x as fast, while I recorded at 60fps. Slowed it down, and then synced the audio. But even at 2 times the speed, the singer had a hard time singing the song. I couldn't imagine making the slow motion effect any bigger.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to improve this effect? Any general comments or criticisms? Feedback is welcomed and encouraged.

Good article http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1845/good-article Wed, 28 Dec 2011 01:21:32 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 1845@/talks/discussions I’ve been getting emails from people wanting help to start their music careers for many years, and I’ll always offer as much advice and support as I can. Most of it involves me, rather pathetically, commiserating with people that Steven Spielberg never got back to them about that demo CD.
Thanks to the massive number of deeply mediocre music tech courses spewing out huge numbers of over‑qualified and under‑experienced kids with virtually no hope of employment, a good number of people recently have been sending begging emails, offering to make me coffee and sweep my studio floor for two years just for the experience. For free. And a good number of those people have degrees. One was even a PhD.

In sharp contrast, I’m beginning to suspect there’s also something about this bit of the industry that seems to attract the Stupids. The bloke who came to fix my Aga recently asked me if I knew anyone at the BBC.
“Yeah, a few people. Why?” I asked.
“Wondered if you could put in a word for me and get me a job.”
“Er, doing what? Fixing ovens?”
“Dunno really. Maybe writing telly music or something? I know they don’t have adverts but I could play guitar like on some of their shows, and stuff.”
Recently, I stumbled across a post in an online recording forum asking what was the best way to mic up an accordion. We’ve all got to start somewhere, and yes of course it never hurts to ask and all that, but really? I’m going to make the staggeringly harsh prediction that if pointing the business end of a microphone towards the part of the instrument making the noise and pushing Record is a bit of a stretch for you, the chances are that there will be other elements of the multi‑billion pound, fiercely competitive UK music industry that will leave you feeling a bit like a guinea pig trying to follow a game of Monopoly.

This is a crowded profession, and most of the people it actually manages to sustain still feel only a heartbeat away from career flame‑out and starvation. And yet despite the huge amounts of information available about publishing, commissioning, marketing strategies, developing and growing your craft, there is still a frighteningly large number of people out there who genuinely think the likes of EMI and Universal Music actually open the thousands of Jiffy bags with CDs in that they get sent each week. Amazing.

So what advice can I offer? Start early. If you aren’t working full‑time in the music business (in whatever capacity) by the time you are 20, it’s almost certainly too late. Get really, really good at what you want to do. Meet as many other people in the industry as you possibly can, except musicians. Specialise in your chosen field as soon as you decide what it is. Keep doing it despite all the setbacks, and don’t ever expect to make any money at it. Know who your clients are and understand what they want and how they pay for it. Know your limitations and your strengths.

And above all, whatever you do, never, ever send me MP3 files of arrangements of Metallica songs performed on a General MIDI synth along with a note saying “Could you kindly pass these on to Hans Zimmer for me?” You know who you are. You bastard.

How The Ear Works http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1830/how-the-ear-works- Sat, 24 Dec 2011 22:20:39 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 1830@/talks/discussions
Note that this article won’t attempt to cover psychoacoustics in its entirety. In particular, we’ll be restricting our focus to monaural audition and setting aside the notion of integration time, which is the audio equivalent of ‘persistence of vision’. Stay tuned for future articles covering stereo image issues and the very diverse uses one can make of the ear’s integration time in music production.

image

We’ll start our study of the ear by looking at Figure 1, on top. This drawing shows the morphology of the ear, as usually represented. This is divided into three sections. The outer ear consists of the auditory canal and the exterior of the tympanic membrane, better known as the eardrum. The malleus, incus and stapes, which are small bones often referred to as ossicles, belong to the middle ear, along with the interior of the tympanic membrane. Then there is the inner ear, which includes the cochlea and the semicircular canals. Last, we find two nerves that connect the ear to the brain. (The semicircular canals and vestibular nerves don’t relay any information relating to hearing; their purpose is to give us a sense of gravity and balance, so we’ll leave them aside.)
Figure 1: The morphology of the human ear (diagram derived from Chittka L, Brockmann A (2005): Perception Space — The Final Frontier, www.plosbiology.org).
Figure 1: The morphology of the human ear (diagram derived from Chittka L, Brockmann A (2005): Perception Space — The Final Frontier, www.plosbiology.org).
What we call ‘sound’ is in fact a progressive acoustic wave — a series of variations in air pressure, spreading out from whatever source made the sound. When these pressure variations strike the ear, they find their way through the external auditory canal to the tympanic membrane, setting it into vibration. The signal is thus converted to mechanical vibrations in solid matter. These vibrations of the tympanic membrane are transmitted to the ossicles, which in turn transmit them to the cochlea. Here the signal undergoes a second change of nature, being converted into pressure variations within liquid. These are then transformed again by specialised hair cells, which convert the liquid waves into nervous signals.

Asher Roth Feat. Akon Music video shot with GH13 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1605/asher-roth-feat.-akon-music-video-shot-with-gh13 Wed, 30 Nov 2011 23:04:40 +0000 magnus387 1605@/talks/discussions
I shot this video at the end of July with a GH13 and a Red Mx. All of the body mounted shots that you see of the artist running around in were done with the GH13.

The concept of the video was inspired by graphic novels, and a bleeding of reality with dynamic illustrations. As a result I attempted to give the footage an HDR, almost drawn-in look. Enjoy!

I know this is far from a raw MTS file... I had to compress it to 90mb to make the file fast and easy to upload (the promotional nature of the video didn't leave me with much time - I needed to get this out the door ASAP). But, to me, this video shows how nicely the visual quality holds up.

Canon FD 50mm 1.4, set on f1.4, just a regular house lamp for light (with my V96 LED pointed at the back wall with a purple gel over it, to give you something to look at). 24p, highest quality settings on the cam. ]]>
