Rebuilding/cleaning lenses is not a simple thing to do. The work is physically easy but any small slip up can render the lens unusable. Also, in most lenses if you take the helicals apart and then attempt to put them back together later, the helicals will line up a hundred different ways but only one way will be right. IF you take the helicals apart, be VERY sure that you have marked them somehow or you'll be in for a hard time.

I have been building up a set of manual nikon lenses, primarily AI series lenses. I've been buying cheap lenses that usually have stuck focuses since this is really an easy way to get lenses for less than premium price, as long as you can work on them. This isn't without potential issues as a lot of sellers will tell you the obvious problems but either won't know all of the details or they just won't tell you all the details. Some lenses have even been taken apart previously and put together wrong.. In short, there might be more problems with these lenses than you know about, so be prepared.

Anyway, I can't go into detail about how to rebuild a lens since each lens is different and might need different work done but I can share some of the issues I had.

One of the issues was re-greasing the lens helicals. Tons of websites and forums claim to have the magic formulas for helical grease or they'll tell you that some strange brand works the best. Some sell you tiny little amounts of grease for lots of money while others mention greases that haven't been available for decades.

I've tried a lot of different greases and here's what I found:

Forget any organic grease.

Anything marked NLGI 2 is going to be too thick. This includes pretty much any of the "bicycle" or automobile greases that are touted on a lot of lens websites. They make the lenses feel solid but focusing takes considerable force which may cause the lens to "bob" back and forth while focusing(also known as lens breathing) and/or shift in the mounts. Both of which ruin shots.

NLGI 1 is better but some of the greases are sticky while some are more jelly-like and offer very little metal-to-metal protection. Most of these are made to grease plastic gears or O-rings. A lot of these greases are PAO based oils with thickeners to make them more grease-like.

PAOs are the base chemicals for synthetic oils like Mobil 1 automobile oils. They tend to stick to metals pretty well and they never separate under heat and pressure like organic oils.

Many of the websites I read said nothing about using oils and the few that did said never to use oils. They never specified what kind or even if they had tried it. I found that synthetic motor oil felt the best and offered the most metal-to-metal protection in the helicals. I even performed a test where I heated the lens helicals up to see if the oil would run out. It did not, generally because synthetic oils actually thicken up slightly when heated.

I wanted a PAO based oil with a sticky property that had PTFE(teflon). I found Super Lube 51004. It's a high viscosity PAO based oil with PTFE. a few small dabs of oil on the helicals and the lenses move smoothly and easily with no "whispering" that you get with metal/metal contact. Just don't use too much, a small amount is all that is needed.

There may be a more lenses such as macro, more zoom, large aperture, and prime lenses in the pipeline. While we were unable to have specifics, more lenses are already in the works, and on the X lens roadmap. High quality lenses have been developed after learning Leica qualities and applying them to their own designs, and by using software correction they are able to correct any distortion caused by the more compact lenses. This will mean that the distortion will / may show on RAW images, and that Panasonic will need to update RAW support for these new lenses.

He also said that the GH3 is not due imminently, as the GH2 is still extremely popular, but that there is a high end GF series camera in the works.”

Sony FE lens aperture control failure http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16300/sony-fe-lens-aperture-control-failure Sat, 07 Jan 2017 22:09:03 +0000 vstardust 16300@/talks/discussions Hi Guys,

I'm on my once in a lifetime around the world trip and my Sony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS broke down in middle of nowhere in Philippines.

The problem:

  • Camera body (Sony A7sII) does not recognize lens aperture and it cannot be controlled. When switching lens on and off and flicking camera power the camera might show the right aperture just for 0,5 seconds and then disappear into -.

  • Lens aperture sometimes randomly "hunts" between aperture fully open and closed until it always gets stuck in closed (~f36).

  • Focusing works very randomly. Focus mode cannot be changed due to "Lens not attached properly or not supported"

  • Still photos can be taken (not in focus) but no video cannot be recorded.

  • There is a strange ticking sound inside the lens when camera power is turned on and lens attached.

Tried fixes:

  • Contacts are cleaned and no physical damage can be seen on the lens. Other lenses Sony FE lenses work fine with the camera body.

Have you guys experienced similar problems with Sony FE lenses??

I'm truly getting desperate. :(

do you have any tips on which lenses to choose in this focal range. They should be vintage lenses and below 140€ (I know this is probably though for the 24mm). They should be relatively fast (below 2.8), plenty sharp and have an analog, film look like color rendition. I know that everybody wants these, but maybe you have some ideas. Have a great day. V

I wanted to know if anyone has experience with C Mount Lenses. I was looking at some different lenses and really don't understand the difference between the CCTV, 16mm, 2/3" C Mount Lenses and if they can work with the GH1.
I also noticed that they make mention of some Lenses being 1" or 1/2". What does this mean for use with a GH1?

Could a Lens like this be used? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/341297-REG/Pentax_C60812_C60812_8mm_to_48mm.html

Vintage Lenses Recommendation (Contax Yashica, Canon FD, Minolta MD / Rokkor) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15280/vintage-lenses-recommendation-contax-yashica-canon-fd-minolta-md-rokkor Sat, 25 Jun 2016 11:52:51 +0000 VortekShow 15280@/talks/discussions Hello camera nerds,

I need your help. I want to build a lens set from affordable but superb vintage lenses for cinematography. These 3 brands would be adapted via an passive adapter onto my Samsung NX1.

Focal lengths I am generally interested in: 24 or 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm

I'll need some experts opinion on which brand to go for. I don't know wether to go for Contax Yashica, Canon FD or Minolta vintage lenses so hit me up with your knowledge and recommendation. It is much appreciated.

I need a relatively inexpensive lens under $450 that will provide at least 200mm reach and is very sharp at the long end. I've looked at some vintage tele lenses from Canon FD, Nikon F-mount(Nikkor), and other old lenses but there isn't enough information on the sharpness of the lenses compared to Micro 4/3 lenses for me to make a decision. Any suggestions for lenses and/or comparisons between modern and vintage lenses would be greatly appreciated.

Chatterhead - Short Film on Bernie vs Hillary shot on Sony F65 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14533/chatterhead-short-film-on-bernie-vs-hillary-shot-on-sony-f65 Wed, 03 Feb 2016 09:42:11 +0000 eddavid 14533@/talks/discussions I directed a film about the debate in our heads that is driving us nuts - Hillary or Bernie?  Vote with our heart or mind?

Shot on the Sony F65 with Cinealta 4k lenses, with Tiffen Digital Diffusion 1/4 filter. The camera is heavy so we used an easy-rig for everything but the subway stuff. In terms of content, this is an idea that was in my head a lot. It's based on walking home from a job one night, thinking a lot about these things. Especially after a post I did and the feedback on it, about Bernie. Calling him a populist and all that. It was interesting, because I chose Bernie but didn't research him when I chose him months ago, even though this is the guy who may be president. And my anger towards Hillary was after reading just one article in Harpers. Interesting how much power we the uniformed are given. Better than some dictatorship, we must not take the ability to vote for granted. Just wish the media educated us better on their past, their records. There I go again! We shot Sony SR Raw -compressed mode which is like shooting red at 5:1 compression. Very simple to load the clips in with the new sony reader. Goes right into resolve, then mostly played with the Sony raw tab, and used a color chart to naturalize the skin tones and went from there. Very easy workflow. Before this card reader, it was really annonying as hell. You had to go through ethernet and load clips from a web browser. Probably is what sunk this camera. But the flip side is that it's what allowed me to afford one :) Incredible low-light camera. Pushed it a lot one stop to 1000 ASA and it looks completely clean. The digital gain looks like film noise. Amazing skin tones. The camera has a lot of meat in the image, a lot of resolution which is nice - gets it a very smooth, natural look. I was I very impressed with the quality of skintones at 3200k. Can't wait to use this guy on many more projects. Just have to figure out how to get it on a movi :)

Which CCTV lens for wide angle fisheye use ? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7609/which-cctv-lens-for-wide-angle-fisheye-use- Fri, 26 Jul 2013 05:31:26 +0000 TruHype 7609@/talks/discussions Hello everyone,

I've recently started to get interested in C mount (CCTV) lens, for they are fast, wide, and cheap. So I wondered, is there any CCTV lens that I could use as a Fisheye (and get the same effect as the Panasonic 8mm f3.5, but faster) ? Here's a few lens I've found looking on the internet :

  • Rainbow 3.5mm 1.6

  • Tamron 4-12mm 1.2

  • Pentax 6mm 1.2 (+ wide conversion lens x0.45)

Wanted effect :

The GH2 exact m4/3 sensor crop is x1.86.

So I would like to get the same widness as the Panasonic 8mm or any 8mm Fisheye (Samyang, Peleng, Rokinon...) :

Panasonic 8mm : 8 x 1.86 = 14.88mm equivalent (no need for ETC mode)

Rainbow 3.5mm : 3.5 x 1.86 = 6.51 -> 6.51 x 2 = 13mm equivalent

Pentax 6mm : 6 x 1.86 = 11.16 -> 11.6 x 2 = 23.2mm equivalent -> 23.2 x 0.45 = 10.44mm equivalent

x 1.86 : GH2 Sensor Crop

x 2 : ETC tele conversion mode crop (to cover vignetting)

x 0.45 : Wide convversion lens

Does that mean we could use any CCTV c mount lens instead of the Panasonic lens to get the wide fisheye effect ?

A few videos :

Lenses :

C mount lens (1/2") work well on the GH2, but I heard that the CS mount lens (1/3") would still have really heavy vignetting because even with the ETC mode it would not cover entirely the GH2 sensor. Is that true ?

Interesting CS mount lens, but 1/3 inch : http://www.ebay.fr/itm/TAMRON-Manual-Iris-CCTV-Lens-3-0-8mm-1-1-0-ASPHERICAL-C-Mount-3-Mega-Pixel-/261248954560?pt=UK_CCTV&hash=item3cd3a6b0c0

I would use the fisheye to film Skateboarding.

Thank you.

MFT lenses: Panasonic Sharpness versus Cine-Lens Softness http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14419/mft-lenses-panasonic-sharpness-versus-cine-lens-softness Tue, 12 Jan 2016 07:48:43 +0000 Brian_Siano 14419@/talks/discussions I just did a shoot where we used three Panasonic cameras of different capabilities: a GX7 and my GH2 shooting in 1080p, and my GH4 using Vlog in 4K. Most of the time, the GX7 used Panasonic lenses, while I used combinations of SLR Magic and Rokinon cine lenses to pull focus properly.

Well, now we're in post, and there are a few problems. The GX7's footage is, well, pretty vibrant: it's smooth, with vivid color, and very sharp focus. And not only is it difficult to grade Vlog to match it (Balazar's LUTs are a big help), I'm finding that my cine-lens footage is just a lot softer than the stuff shot with auto-focus lenses.

Is this kind of the rule with lenses-- that the auto-focus lenses made by Panasonic are just sharper than Rokinon or SLR primes?

(Also, a side question: if I use sharpening on my 4K footage, which is better: sharpen the 4K and then reduce to 1080p, or reduce to 1080p and then sharpen?)

This is an EXCELLENT starter set of primes for the necessary focal lengths.

I primarily kept these lenses around because they were the only 3 that worked very well with the BMCC + Speed Booster + Anamorphot combo. So if that 1.33x anamorphic combo is important to you, then these lenses are ideal for ANA shooting.

They are the 35mm f2 AI, 50mm f1.8 AI, and 85mm F2 AI, they are in excellent optical condition, with the 85mm having tiny tiny, hairline cleaning marks. Absolutely no fungus and haze, come with front/rear caps and the very excellent helicoptersean for the 35 and 50. I don't have one for the 85, but sean can hook you up no problem. The AI lenses have the same optics as AIS, which are excellent, but longer focus throw, and with the expanded diameters on the gears, the throw is very very long.

I would like to move them as a bundle, and will be dropping the price as a whole to move them. $300 for the whole set (The 85mm goes for $200 itself) plus the focus gears for free. Shipping is gonna be low or split depending on where you are in the world. Will ship worldwide.

Paypal please, so PM me or email me at innersparkfilms@gmail.com if you're interested or have any questions! Thanks guys!

FS: Panasonic Lumix GH1 in box with a ton of vintage prime lenses http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12422/fs-panasonic-lumix-gh1-in-box-with-a-ton-of-vintage-prime-lenses Sat, 21 Feb 2015 20:32:07 +0000 LiftCM 12422@/talks/discussions I am sadly selling my trusty GH1 with its lovely 1080/24p 75Mbps hack included with accessories in BOX. Ask me for video samples. I last used it on a two cam corporate video shoot for a major Pharma company and for a broadcast commercial. Its been the B-Cam companion to my GH2 for the last 8 months but I am wanting a second GH2.

I am throwing in an assortment of vintage lenses along with their m4/3 lens adapters! The highly sought after Minolta MD Rokkor-X 24mm f2.8 AND the Minolta MD Rokkor - X 45mm F2 Konica Hexanon AR 28mm f3.5 Brand New in Box New Old Stock never used Kalimar 28mm f2.8! Konica Hexanon AR 50mm f1.4 Konica Hexanon 57mm f1.8 (needs work) Konica Zoom Hexanon 65-135mm f4 (needs cleaning).

I also have a spare Chinar 28mm f2.8 I'll throw in as well if you need more than one 28mm or need an extra 28mm prime for a second camera. This is a ton of glass all in very good shape. Im only asking for $350 for all of the above and not really interested in selling just one lens for 50 bucks. I really need to clean out my camera bag and raise some cash to get another GH2. Anyone have a GH2 and willing to trade for all the above...that would be nice too!

Cheers, C

D Mount Cine Lenses--Can they be adapted for use with modern cameras? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12514/d-mount-cine-lenses-can-they-be-adapted-for-use-with-modern-cameras Tue, 03 Mar 2015 15:53:11 +0000 Fujinonner 12514@/talks/discussions Hello,

So I know C mount lenses can be used for different modern/digital cameras with varying sensor sizes, as long as you have the right adapter. Can D mount lenses be used in a similar way? Or are they simply too small? Also, was wondering about M mount (Kodak Cine) lenses--can they be adapted for use with newer cameras?

Thanks for any insights!

Found this lens in a thrift shop http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12449/found-this-lens-in-a-thrift-shop Mon, 23 Feb 2015 22:30:59 +0000 MBlue 12449@/talks/discussions I need some help figuring out how to use this lens I found in a thrift shop. I've been lurking around this forum for a couple weeks and you guys seem like the friendliest most knowledgeable group so I figured I'd give you a shot.

I'm pretty new to m43 photography, and digital in general. My last camera was a Minolta X370. I just went out and bought a used GH2 and an adapter for my old MD mount 50mm f1.7, but I've been wanting more lenses so I was cruising local thrift shops and I came across something that looked like an anamorphic lens. I bought it without thinking (it was pretty cheap) but now I have no idea how to use it.

It says "SANKOR ANAMO-PRIME LENS f=95mm-3.74in Japan" on the side in blue letters. I googled that and apparently there are a million just like it on ebay, but no reviews, camera tests, stats, nothing. It looks kinda like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sankor-Anamo-Prime-Anamorphic-f-95mm-3-74-in-Theater-Proector-Lens-/271743605595?nma=true&si=Vg%252BTHgfPDrHc8kswmEhylSSwtXA%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Except its a little more beat up.

I've read about mounting anamorphics with a taking lens and focusing both of them to the same distance, but that doesn't seem to be working for this one, or at least not with me hand holding it against my 50mm. It only cost $30, but after buying the GH2 I'm pretty broke and now I'm scared I threw away what money I had left on a shitty, unpopular lens I can't use.

Does anyone know anything about this lens?

FS: Nikon Prime/Zoom Set 28/2.8, 35/2.0, 50/1.8, 55/2.8, 85/2.0, 80-200/4 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11937/-fs-nikon-primezoom-set-282.8-352.0-501.8-552.8-852.0-80-2004 Wed, 10 Dec 2014 10:13:03 +0000 InnerSpark 11937@/talks/discussions The day has come where I will finally part with my beloved Nikon Set. I've made the switch to modern glass that streamlines working with stills, and I don't use these as much anymore. Nothing optically wrong with any of them, just would prefer to see them get more use. I prefer to sell in bunches, rather than individually, and anyone needing a full range prime set/zoom or a backup set I'll offer a good discount as well. I've had these primes for quite some time now, and they have been picked because I felt they were the best performers compared to their siblings. Mostly used on the BMCC w/ Metabones adapter. ALL work with the SLR Magic Anamophot (except 80-200 zoom which I did not test) Did I mention they all have a lovely LONG focus throw. These are a great set.

Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AI-S - $150 (Exc condition, fung that has been UV treated on front element, outside of the image circle, does NOT affect IQ) Nikkor 35mm f2.0 AI - $170 (Exc condition, no dust/haze. Comes with helicoptersean seamless followfocus ring) Nikkor 50mm F1.8 AI - $100 (Exc condition, no dust/haze. Comes with helicoptersean seamless follow focus ring) Nikkor Micro (Macro) 55mm f2.8 AI-S - $125 (Exc condition, no dust/haze) Nikkor 85mm f2.0 AI - $250 (Exc condition, small dust specs, doesn't affect IQ. My favorite of the bunch) Nikkor 80-200mm F4 AI-S $125 (Exc condition, small dust, doesn't affect IQ. Sharp, sharp, sharp)

Or $850 for all of them plus shipping. Thanks guys! PM me or e-mail me at innersparkfilms@gmail.com if you have any questions!

7mm lenses that you would recommend? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3373/7mm-lenses-that-you-would-recommend Sun, 27 May 2012 09:17:59 +0000 kronstadt 3373@/talks/discussions Hi all, I want to achieve a 14mm look. In GH13 language that would translate as 7mm lens. Has anyone come across a decent 7mm or even a 6mm lens that could be used without vignetting?

Many thanks!

G6 Basic Movie Mode & Legacy Lens Questions http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11473/g6-basic-movie-mode-legacy-lens-questions Thu, 02 Oct 2014 15:11:19 +0000 redstar17 11473@/talks/discussions Movie Mode Question: So I'm setting my REC FORMAT and REC QUALITY on the touchscreen MOTION PICTURE screens. All set, now ... I want to set the ISO and shutter speed. Can I do this and shoot a video in Shutter priority (S)? Or do I have to shoot in Manual or Movie? Can I set the settings as if they were a stills setting and then push the red button and these stills settings will control video also? I'd like to avoid Movie mode so that I can allow the aperature to grab the correct light. I'd also like to avoid Movie mode because I need to snap stills while shooting videos (I know the video interruption danger). What I need to do is to keep the big stills button active so that I can shoot stills while shooting (ending) a video record. And a crazy thought -- can I set video and stills at different settings? ANOTHER way of asking -- When I set up settings for still photos do those same settings become part of the video recording set up?

Legacy Lens Questions: I have three Oly M3/4 auto-focus zooms that I want to use with my G6. I have a Lumix Pany-to-Oly adapter. Do I lose the ability to auto focus (it seems like I do)? If they should zoom and focus correctly what settings on the camera will make this work? THANKS!

Want to get into adapting lenses to my gh4. Not sure where to start http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11416/want-to-get-into-adapting-lenses-to-my-gh4.-not-sure-where-to-start Sat, 27 Sep 2014 09:07:00 +0000 nosignal 11416@/talks/discussions Hi everyone! I recently upgraded from my gh2 to the new gh4.

I've got two m4/3 panasonic brand lenses (14-42kit and 20mm pancake).

I've been wanting to start adapting some foreign lenses to my gh2 and gh4 but I'm pretty clueless on where to start. Since there are so many options, I'm a bit overwhelmed on what route to go. I've read a bunch about people adapt FD mount lenses to their cameras. And I've read about the canon 50mm. I like doing hyperlapse and timelpase photography, also, a lot of different kinds of video work. I usually use my camera outside in the sun, and at night for timelapses. I guess I'm just looking to get some more variety in my choices.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Newbie looking for lenses recommandations http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11316/newbie-looking-for-lenses-recommandations Wed, 17 Sep 2014 15:50:41 +0000 monks19 11316@/talks/discussions Hi. I do some events filming with Lumix cameras (G6 & GH2) using Sigma (Nikon mounts) zoom lenses with RJ adapters. All lenses are at f2.8 max for speed and luminosity. I know that the lowest can go down to f1.4, but I havent been able, so far, to find zoom lenses like this, whatever the brand, especially at a good price (lower than 500 $, used or new).

Does any of you have any recommandations/suggestions on which zoom lenses (whatever the brand, as long as an m43 adapter is avalaible) I should get with my cams (and which adapters, if needed and unavalaible with the RJ m43 ones) ?

Thanks to answer.
