I have looked through the search function and no relevant results come up when I browse for this topic, so here's my new thread:

I am interested in astronomy as well as wildlife and videography/sound recording/film making in general.

Does anyone know if I can connect my new Panasonic GH2 video camera to a telescope such as the Celestron SkyProdigy™ 130 Computerized Telescope, for catering stills and videos of the moon and distant wildlife such as deers, birds etc?

I have seen a number of videos where people have used a telescopic lens in conjunction with the GH2 to film the moon and wildlife. But I am interested to know whether or not it is possible to connect a whole telescope to the GH2...

Thanks.

ND Filters and Lens/Filter Flares Clarification http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3453/nd-filters-and-lensfilter-flares-clarification Sat, 02 Jun 2012 13:56:24 +0000 B3Guy 3453@/talks/discussions Hey, all. I'm not entirely clear on how an ND filter changes the amount of flare in a lens system. (i.e. how much lens flare do you get with an ND in front of the lens versus with an ND in the camera body).

Also, how an ND changes flare from a flare filter (star, streak, etc.) i.e. would and ND in front of a flare filter reduce the amount of flare from the filter just the same as if the ND was behind the filter, or would the flare filter flare more with the ND behind it?

Perhaps some more experienced DPs could clear all this up for me, Thanks.

Always learning-

Need help identifying this lens & mount! http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4273/need-help-identifying-this-lens-mount Fri, 17 Aug 2012 02:34:54 +0000 bonanza69 4273@/talks/discussions OK, I'm wanting see if anyone can help me identify what lens mount this could be and if you know who possibly could have made it and its possible uses(would just be a bonus). It has no markings whatsoever except "lens made in France". It's a zoom and has 10blade aperture(no clicks), so i assume its a cine lens considering the age. It's black but seems to be made of brass. I'm thinking 16mm or super16mm.. not sure. Any help would be appreciated!

What do you think to this?

The lens costs roughly £100 and I already have the GoPro HDHero 2. I would like to try this but have no experience for skill with modifying electronics... so I would get someone to help me if I tried it...

I think before I buy my GH2H, It might be a good idea to make the most of my existing camera and modify it... Im not sure though as there aren't many videos of actual footage shot with this lens online that I can find.

Any thoughts?

thanks.

It is a non-destructive modification, unlike some that you may have seen on the web. In order for the C-Mount to M43 adapter to fit on this lens, some modifications, including removing a plastic housing were required. I have included more information, photos, and a video in my eBay listing. This is a great little lens that feels like a quality product in your hands. It's FAST at f1.0 and versatile. It requires the use of ETC Mode on the GH2, or similar functions on other cameras, or a teleconverter. Because I'm going to refer you to my eBay listing, if you have any questions, you can reach me through eBay and I'll respond to you. The "Buy it Now" price is $245 and the starting bid is $155. Searches yield no results, other than I need a 58-77mm step up ring to do this without vignetting. I can't be alone in this issue! I am constantly battling flares and lighting artifacts whenever the sun hits it. This is my glidecam lens and its becoming very problematic to shoot with. For instance, my T2i glidecam setup had a 17-50mm and has zero issues with flares. Is this more than a hood issue, could it be a lens coating issue?

Pentax FA31 Limited Lens http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3795/pentax-fa31-limited-lens Fri, 06 Jul 2012 05:54:50 +0000 pundit 3795@/talks/discussions Moved from the Driftwood settings topic...

@strancali @driftwood @feha Thanks and following on from the Cluster V6 discussion regarding the Pentax FA31 Ltd.

image

It is a bit of a gem though it's not exactly cheap. I have a Pentax DSLR system and already had this lens for some two years before I bought the GH2. It's not as sharp as say a Samyang 35 F1.4 is wide open, but it's very good from around F2.5.

However it has great color, bokeh and 'depth' for want of a better term. Yes there are faster lenses, and lenses that are sharper wide open, but the FA31 does have a certain look that I think makes it quite unique and seems to be the reason many like it.

It's around 58mm (35 still frame equivalent) on the GH2 and almost could be considered a 'standard' focal length lens on an Super35 or APS-C video camera.

All three Pentax FA Limited's which include the FA31, FA43 and FA77 come from the film era and while they are screw drive auto-focus they do have proper external focusing rings with hard end points and are probably amongst the best manual focusing auto-focus lenses around. They also have proper aperture rings which can be set to either the 'A' setting for aperture control via a Pentax DSLR or you can manually set the aperture when the lenses are fitted to any other camera such as the GH2. The FA Limiteds take lens gears and operate fine with my follow focus.

If I didn't have any Pentax camera gear and was just looking for lenses for the GH2 would I buy a Pentax FA31 Ltd now? I guess at around $1000 USD you need to ask yourself the question is there another lens(es) that would be more desirable for shooting video on your GH2?

I'm personally quite interested in the Voigtlander 17.5mm F0.95 but only wish I could use it on my Pentax K5 as well.

The other thing is the lighting. I use a Photek Softlighter II with flash for still photography but replace the strobe head with 4 x 85w Spiral Fluro's when shooting video.

Sorry for the long rant but you did ask! ;>)

Here's a still shot taken of the same fellow (but in orange garb) with the FA31 Ltd on my previous Pentax K7 and also using the Photek Softlighter II but with flash rather than fluros. The APS-C sensor of the Pentax means a crop factor of 1.5 versus 1.86 with the GH2. So this is around 46mm equivalent focal length on a Super35 which is more relevant with video being the subject here.

(This was shot about two years ago when his house was much less cluttered!)

Canon 100mm f2.0 FD for sale http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3686/canon-100mm-f2.0-fd-for-sale Sun, 24 Jun 2012 14:07:15 +0000 sam_rides_a_mtb 3686@/talks/discussions I have a Canon FD 100mm f2.0 for sale. Everything about the lens in near perfect except for the front element which has a very subtle bit of fungus. I have had this lens for over 3 years and I can tell you the fungus has not grown in that time, if anything, it appears to be less visible than when I first purchased it. The focus ring is smooth and the aperture ring is nice a snappy.

Have used this for both photos and videos on the GH1 and GH2 with gorgeous results!

I use this with the Canon BT-52 lens hood (designed specifically for this lens) and get nice contrasty images (even without it). Here are two sample images taken at f2 without the hood (option to view the originals in full res): http://www.flickr.com/photos/sol_rider/4856193665/sizes/l/in/set-72157624687046230/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/sol_rider/4856193013/sizes/l/in/set-72157624687046230/

I did some tests taking photos with the lens with a macro extension tube attached at various apertures just to see if I could get any sign of image degradation to show up because of the fungus: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sol_rider/4179552147/in/set-72157624687204126 and at the closest focusing distance with macro tube: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sol_rider/4179548171/in/set-72157624687204126/ You can be the judge.

Took it to a couple camera shops that do lens repairs and they said being that it is only on the front element and all the others look flawless, that I should not worry about it as it will have little to no affect of image quality.

Anyways, I love this lens, I just need to cut back my lens collection since I travel and move a lot. Offer me a fair price and I will include a brand new BT-52 lens hood.

Would prefer to ship within the US, though will ship internationally. Paypal accepted.

Might go to eBay, though figured I would offer it here first.

Also, have a couple other fast lenses on eBay currently with bidding starting at just $1: http://www.ebay.com/sch/sjsielen/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
