HDMI FORUM RELEASES VERSION 2.0 OF THE HDMI SPECIFICATION

Increased bandwidth provides the infrastructure for new features that will drive the next generation of consumer entertainment

BERLIN, Germany - September 4, 2013 – IFA 2013 – HDMI Forum, Inc., a non-profit, mutual benefit corporation, today announced the release of Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification. This latest HDMI Specification, the first to be developed by the HDMI Forum, offers a significant increase in bandwidth (up to 18Gbps) to support new features such as 4K@50/60 (2160p), which is 4 times the clarity of 1080p/60 video resolution; 32 audio channels; as well as dynamic auto lip-sync and extensions to CEC. The complete Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification is available to Adopters on the HDMI Adopter Extranet. HDMI Licensing, LLC will host a press conference to discuss the new features of the HDMI 2.0 Specification at IFA 2013 in Berlin on Friday, September 6 at 12:00pm in the TecWatch Forum area of Hall 11.1.

Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification, which is backward compatible with earlier versions of the Specification, was developed by the HDMI Forum's Technical Working Group whose members represent some of the world's leading manufacturers of consumer electronics, personal computers, mobile devices, cables and components. The HDMI Forum currently has a membership of 88 companies.

"The introduction of the HDMI 2.0 Specification represents a major milestone for the HDMI Forum," said Robert Blanchard of Sony Corporation, president of the HDMI Forum. "Our members collaborated closely to take the highly successful HDMI Specification to the next level by expanding audio and video features for consumer electronics applications."

The HDMI Forum has chosen HDMI Licensing, LLC to be the Agent to license Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification. In this role, HDMI Licensing, LLC will provide marketing, promotional, licensing and administrative services, as well as education on the benefits of the HDMI Specification to adopters, retailers, and consumers.

"We are pleased to continue our work in supporting the HDMI Adopter base as well as the entire HDMI ecosystem," said Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing, LLC. "Adopters can now continue to develop new product functionality over the HDMI interface as well as look to HDMI Licensing, LLC as their single contact for all their licensing and administrative needs."

Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification does not define new cables or new connectors. Current High Speed cables (category 2 cables) are capable of carrying the increased bandwidth.

The HDMI 2.0 Compliance Test Specification (CTS) is expected to be released before the end of 2013.

GH3 HDMI Progressive possible? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10125/gh3-hdmi-progressive-possible Wed, 09 Apr 2014 11:19:39 +0000 kupchenpo 10125@/talks/discussions So I've read and read and I still can't find a solid, up-to-date answer to this question. Can the GH3 output true 24p out of the HDMI to send to a mixer or recorder? @driftwood @kavadni

It seems that some people say that it's possible with Viera Link turned off and resolution set to AUTO, but other say that doesn't work. I have some live shoots coming up where I'll need to feed a mixer 24p, and need to decide if something like an Atomos Connect is necessary for pulldown removal. I don't need SDI for run length, so I'd only be using these (in a practical sense) for pulldown removal.

Can anyone tell me if this is necessary with the most up to date firmware?

$50 (3G)HD-SDI to HDMI converter (quick review) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9245/50-3ghd-sdi-to-hdmi-converter-quick-review Thu, 02 Jan 2014 09:14:27 +0000 hempo22 9245@/talks/discussions Just thought I would give a quick "review" of an SDI to HDMI converter that just arrived. And by review I mean: List my equipment and say if it works or not with that combination. I couldn't find anything on this particular el cheapo one when scanning the forums so here we go!

It came without a box, just a padded envelope. The converter and the power supply was wrapped in plastic. The power had an american socket and and type f adapter (just what we use in Sweden). Input voltage is 5-12v.

According to the eBay seller I ordered from (and the manual that came with it) it said to support the following input/output resolutions:

  • 480i, 576i, 720p, 1080i @ 50/59,94/60
  • 1080p @ 23,98/24/25/29,97/30/50/59,94/60

On the BMCC 2.5K MFT + Zacuto EVF 1080i50/60 worked fine, so did 1080p25/29,97/30. 23,98 and 24p did not. I got "unsupported format" on the Zacuto display (latest firmware).

No big deal for me since I'm shooting 25p, but people who need an adapter and shoot 24p to use with their Zacutos, beware.

EDIT: 23.98 and 24p works on the converter. Hooked it up to my Samsung TV and sure enough, I get an image. Which is weird since the Zacuto manual states 1080p24. Time to contact them.

I can also add that audio passes trough and I get metering on the EVF.

For the money I'm not gonna complain and this will do till I can afford an Alphatron or whatever comes out this year that I will settle on. It's light and will stick easily on your rig with some velcro.

USB powered 13"+ Monitors with HDMI! GeChic On Lap Monitors $140 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8644/usb-powered-13-monitors-with-hdmi-gechic-on-lap-monitors-140 Sat, 02 Nov 2013 15:09:51 +0000 CRFilms 8644@/talks/discussions Looking here and there to see if there are any new cheap field monitors, I am always dissapointed when I see USB powered monitors, get excited, and find out they also ONLY do video through USB. After searching for a different solution to try and get a monitor stand so I could put a monitor on my lap(don't ask), I found this:
$400 IPS, does full 1080p touchscreen, and is powered by USB with HDMI and VGA. It's currently sold out though, but the 13" model is in stock and on sale $138 with today as the last day for that price. You can find similar models on ebay for around $210. That one only goes to 720p and no IPS or touch. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0V108S5365

The smaller models only need 5v 1A, you could easily power them off lots of batteries out there. I'm tempted, but I'm not going to make any more major purchases until BlackFriday or after. http://www.gechic.com/product_help_en.asp?s=10

GH2 to Macbook for live monitoring - wired options? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7209/gh2-to-macbook-for-live-monitoring-wired-options Mon, 10 Jun 2013 11:11:04 +0000 Social 7209@/talks/discussions Hi all,

I've been looking around for info on how to use my new 2013 macbook pro to show live video primarily, and images if possible, that are being recorded/photographed live from my GH2... essentially using my Macbook as a monitor.

There is a thread on PV that is a couple of years old which I have posted to, but through I'd open this up as a new topic as well, as I'm sure there are people out there in GH2 land who could do with this info as well. Here's a link to the original topic: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1207/gh2-live-streaming-solutions/p1

I'm hoping that in the 2 years since the original thread, the tech options have moved on. My macbook has thunderbolt, which, from experience connecting macbook to tv, works well with hdmi, and as thunderbolt connectivity can be used to transfer data from a hard drive back and forth, it must be a 2 way connection, so theoretically should allow for possible hdmi data being inputed to my mac.

I am relatively new to this and am trying to gather information, as this forum has been so informative in the past, I wanted to ask you guys what you would do in my situation? I would appreciate cheaper options if possible, primarily wired options as from scouring the web, there are issues with data signal interruptions and signal distance on wireless options.... plus wired is, I expect, considerably cheaper!

Can you help?

Thanks, Rob

GH2 Flowmotion Hack HDMI Output for monitoring Camera changes from 720p to 1080i ? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8361/gh2-flowmotion-hack-hdmi-output-for-monitoring-camera-changes-from-720p-to-1080i- Mon, 07 Oct 2013 12:50:46 +0000 vantulpe 8361@/talks/discussions Hi To all, I use the great flowmotion hack with a Pana GH2 but there is a problem, I record from a Octocopter (aerial movies) in 720p and send monitor picture via hdmi output to a monitor down to earth but sometimes the camera record in 1080i and after changing battery right in 720 p how can I solve this bug i used latest version pttools and flowmotion ... I recorded in Manual Movie Mode 720p FH Quality and converted the HDMI Signal to analog SD and send it to an external Monitor the result was 1080i/30 footage on my sd card ... my battery was empty while recording after changing the battery the camera recorded in true 720p/60! Are there any new solutions for this problem? For the problem recording in 720p on SD card while monitoring via HDMI output using analog converter... to external monitor Would be the sanity hack better for 720p ? Any experience in the community?

Greetings from Vienna Lars

Does this problem still exist with the GH3 ?

Greetings from Austria Lars

No replies has nobody any idea?

Perhaps the solution?! I found in the menu of the gh2 the hdmi output setting auto, 1080i and 720p It was on auto..... could changing the mode to 720p solve the problem perhaps.... Answer from "onlocation" There is no way to use the GH2 at 720p while using HDMI monitor. The way we solve the issue is to get a small cheap camera and aim it at the view finder. You can focus the lens on the small camera and focus the view finder, plus use a sun shade (gaffers tape all around) and you can get an ok picture, but it's not great. The best solution is to buy the GH3, one week after we got our we sold our GH2. GH3 is simply another level, if you are doing this seriously then don't even think twice, sell your GH2 while it is still worth something and buy the 3. Good luck.

Or is it just totally random. I'm wondering if the HDMI can cause a current drop under certain conditions.

It has HDMI input. I am guessing the power would need converted to run on a battery in the field. I sponsored at the level of $135 which gave me the option of 13, 15 or 17 inch. I was thinking of I were to use it mounted to a camera rig the 13" would be nice.

Any opinions?

If you are interested the are selling preorders here for $135 http://www.able-hd.com/

GF3 Live HDMI output? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7683/gf3-live-hdmi-output Sun, 04 Aug 2013 05:28:55 +0000 chrisz78 7683@/talks/discussions I have a GF3 which I am using occasionally for transfer of old 8mm and 9.5mm films, rigged together with a projector through a "custom-tinkered" combination of lenses to project the tiny film frame on the GF3 sensor. I find the "pseudo-live" video output very useful because it helps focusing and adjusting the image a lot if you can watch on a full-size monitor. But as you know, the A/V output is switched off the moment I turn video recording on, and on the small GF3 monitor I often won't notice when the film slips slightly out-of-focus due to mechanical problems, or a hair or other bit of debris gets stuck in the picture area during projection. Now I don't have HDMI input facility at hand, so could someone with a HDMI monitor and a GF3 please check if the video output via HDMI stays on during recording? I've googled and used the search function here, but couldn't find anything definitive enough to make me buy a HDMI converter or new monitor for the purpose. If "live HDMI out" depends on the firmware version or on certain hacks being installed, I'd appreciate clear instructions as to what I need. I have little spare time to re-invent the wheel and try out everything available in the hope that something will work.... Thank you!

GH2 to monitor: is there a hack to stop auto change to Interlaced when camera set to progressive? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7278/gh2-to-monitor-is-there-a-hack-to-stop-auto-change-to-interlaced-when-camera-set-to-progressive Mon, 17 Jun 2013 12:42:17 +0000 Social 7278@/talks/discussions Hi all,

I've been tinkering with my camera set up. I wanted to monitor what I was shooting on a bigger screen, and wanted to use my macbook pro retina as the monitor. I bought a blackmagic intensity shuttle, connected it via HDMI to the shuttle and the shuttle to my mac via thunderbolt.

At first I had no picture - the camera was set to 24p cinema mode at FH.... but, in order to get the camera working through Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 capture function (and the blackmagic media express software) I had to change the settings on the software to 1080i 50 - so it looks like both pieces of software think the camera is spitting out 1080i 50 rather than 1080p 24.

As a result, I have 2 questions:

1 - does using an HDMI monitor change the footage captured on the SD card in the camera from 24p 1080p to 50 1080i? If not, then that's fine, I only want to monitor the footage and can cope with a visual change showing on my Mac. If so, then.... we have an issue.... 2 - is there a hack or option in ptools that will keep it at 24 1080p if it does affect the SD card recorded footage? I'm using Flowmotion v2 at the moment.

@Vitaliy_Kiselev - can you, or any of the geniuses on here help?

Many thanks,

Rob

medium (15") FullHD monitor for focus puller http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6443/medium-15-fullhd-monitor-for-focus-puller Tue, 19 Mar 2013 16:31:28 +0000 Psyco 6443@/talks/discussions I was looking for quite some time for a medium size portable monitor with HDMI input and 1920x1080 resolution. I need it for my focus puller to judge focus (using a remote follow focus) on set, especially when doing steady-cam work.

  • The monitor must not be to big, as he will have it right in front of him (some times right on his lap). If the monitor is to big, it would be to bulky and it would be to exhausting for the eyes always looking from side to side.

  • Full HD 1920x1080 is a good thing when judging focus. Using a GH2 with FM2 or Moon, the picture is recorded at a very high level of detail and resolution. Being off focus on the main subject is annoying.

BUT...most of the monitors are either big (>19") or not full HD. Most of the monitors advertised for cameras/DSLRs are even only 1024x600 (which is 16:9 SD resolution, not HD!). Or they are very expensive.

Today I stumbled over this monitor:

http://www.ebay.de/itm/40cm-15-6-LED-FULL-HD-TV-FERNSEHER-DVB-T-PVR-VIDEO-RECORDER-USB-HDMI-220-12V-/380584100436?pt=DE_TV_Martin&hash=item589c948254#ht_13302wt_1141

Which looks quite good for the task I need it for. The biggest downside is probably the 25W power consumption - I will need a big battery mounted to the backside.

What do you think? Any better options?

If it's there, please excuse me for starting a new one and link to the topic.

I like using my camera with a B4 lens and exTele mode set to on. Now I want to use this with my HDMI viewfinder and I remember this used to be possible with the first firmware version. I couldn't find it anywhere in the new one, so I loaded the firmware v1.0 into Ptool 3.65d and checked the 'ExTele check disable' box in the patches for testers. Now, when I connect my GH2 to the HDMI monitor the ITC gets disabled, but when I hit record, it will go back to ETC mode. Unfortunately the camera locks up and the only way to solve this is to remove the battery.

My questions:

  • What can I do to prevent the from locking up. I thought this patch was pretty reliable? I also tried it with Ptool 3.63d and no other patches but the Extele check disable patch, but still the same problem. I want to record in 1080i50 FSH mode.
  • I remember it would stay in ETC mode also with live view, but can't remember how I did it. Any tips?

When using an external monitor during recording, spanning gets interrupted no matter what spanning patch is being used. The GH2 just stops recording.

Accordingly to the last response I got from V. Kiselev in this forum was that it hasn't been fixed. Then, accurate focus is the biggest issue I have been encountering with the GH2, specially for run and gun type of shooting. I'm hoping that the GH3 doesn't have this issue.

Two speakers and headphone output (with good metal socket) to check sound. I don't go to tuner, USB input, SD card player, etc as it is not very important here. To be short, you can check your JPEG files just by inserting SDHC card. But you better not to.

Image quality:

Average for portable devices. I like the colors (only for specific LCD panel used, later ones seems to be worse). Unit has ability to set color temperature (four presets, not VGA it is adjustable very precise) and many other parameters for HDMI input. Menu can be set to be almost transparent and position can be adjusted.

From software standpoint it is not all good. First. HDMI connection must be slightly improved by manufacturer. I suggest to set HDMI format to 720p60 in GH1 menus (as this works fine most of the time). Sometimes GH1 go to 2-10s cycle trying to establish HDMI connection (turn modes wheel to go out of this and try again) on 1080i or auto modes. Same happens with my HD cameras. After all screen flashes it starts to work fine. Second and most important. Unit has small overscan. So, framing is slightly off and also sharpness is not perfect (but ok for focusing). Using VGA it don't have any overscan, so it is firmware related HDMI only thing.

My unit is mounted on telescoping arm.

I really suggest to check much better monitors at

GH2 and the BMD HyperDeck Shuttle Record Problems http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4230/gh2-and-the-bmd-hyperdeck-shuttle-record-problems Mon, 13 Aug 2012 11:01:20 +0000 questech 4230@/talks/discussions Hello All :-)

I have a BMD HyperDeck Shuttle 2 and it records uncompressed and in the DNxHD (220) codec.

I can import, play and edit the files just fine, but there's a major problem that makes the files useless.

Static scenes are fine except they are flat and require color correction to make them aesthetically acceptable.

The main problem is that the files have horrible interlacing problems... and I'll explain.

First of all, it doesn't matter whether I shoot in FSH, HBR, 24p or don't hit the camera record button at all and just record from the cleaned display... the same problem occurs, so it isn't a camera setting (I've spent 2 days experimenting with different cam settings as well).

When panning I get fine interlacing lines. They are annoying and unacceptable in their own right, but it gets worst. Once encoded (as in for distribution) the problem is accentuated. Huge lines appear and and make the video look horrible... it is unusable.

On close inspection of the files in PP CS6 I can see that the file is filled with ghost images, which I thought were a result of duplicate frames that the GH2 has served to the BMD Shuttle 2.

I've read about certain fixes for this and a the color shift issues, but a) most sound too difficult to be used in a practical workflow and at the end of the day, they may not even work.

So I'm here with hat in hand hoping that a discussion might yield some fruit that can help me, and others that are having the same problem or looking to use a Shuttle with their GH2s.

Update...

I said that extra frames were being added, well I read that recording from the GH2's HDMI port added and deleted frames randomly, and that clouded my judgment and made me lean in that direction, but upon closer inspection (I was going to experiment with manually removing the extra frames) I found that there are no extra frames per-say.

The ghosting I described is at the heart of the problem.

When panning each frame appears to be a combination of 2 frames at different times. So depending on the speed of the pan (and the shutter speed - the higher the SS the closer together is the dual images) you get an interlaced image (half of the lines) at one point in time, and another (the other half of the lines) at a later point in time.

Where they overlap, the image is solid, but on either side you have a "ghost" image which when played back you can see through the image where the missing lines are, thereby giving a notched edge effect.

And I haven't even wrapped my head around how I can fix that yet??

Thanks for your interest and feedback!!

Anthony
