GH2 Hack for intentional glitch art and general video-art destruction? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/24162/gh2-hack-for-intentional-glitch-art-and-general-video-art-destruction Wed, 29 Jul 2020 21:08:08 +0000 lordgord 24162@/talks/discussions I'm curious what video art potential is possible in camera by utilizing the GH2 hack? I've got a lot of life out of my GH2, but my interest in milking the best image out of it are long gone. I never delved into customizing my own hacks, so what parameters could be leveraged to break the image in interesting and beautiful ways? Finding guides is almost impossible do to all the generic ptools tutorials out there.

Sorry if this has been asked before (feel free to close the thread if it's the case), but I was wondering if the existing time limit hack(s) that predate the Sony A7III can be use on this camera or if there is a way to bypass the recording time limit (without resorting to an external recorder) ?

Thanks to answer

GH2 RELOADED http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15127/gh2-reloaded Thu, 26 May 2016 11:42:15 +0000 frullaccia 15127@/talks/discussions Into the Full HD world, our GH2 camera and Panasonic processor have still much to give us. This new hack is based upon my personal Gop 1 development. But almost every single parameter has been adapted to match some original and extreme choices. I made all possible to get a neat and rich picture. It has been a step-by-step hard work. In particular the hbr mode was very difficult to manage. To tell the truth, I didn't touch the 1080i60 and 720p60 modes, which are taken by Apefos' The End patch.
I hope that somebody will find useful and beautiful our new used GH2.

What is the largest sd card a hacked gh2 will support? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14264/what-is-the-largest-sd-card-a-hacked-gh2-will-support Tue, 22 Dec 2015 23:50:32 +0000 cayblood 14264@/talks/discussions I just bought a used GH2 on ebay and am interested in using it to record long talks at conferences--events that could potentially run all day. Ideally I'd like to find a reasonable quality setting that would allow me to save 8 hrs or more worth of 1080p footage without having to switch cards. First of all, what is the largest sd card that the camera will support? Are there specific card models anyone would recommend that will be sure to work? Also, any recommendations on which firmware hack to install on my GH2? I'm new to this.

GH2 Hack most similar to BMPCC quality http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12691/gh2-hack-most-similar-to-bmpcc-quality- Sun, 29 Mar 2015 13:31:23 +0000 Enzo101 12691@/talks/discussions I'll try to make this as short as possible. I already own a BMPCC, but I found it frustrating to use sometimes due to its battery life and the fact that it can't take pictures. So I recently bought a gh2 so I can take pictures and records videos all in one camera, instead of having to carry 2 cameras with me all the time. I'm aware that I can't get the EXACT same quality as the BMPCC, but I wanted to know whats the best hack that gives quality most similar to it and produces the flattest image. I have a 64GB 80mb/s sd card, so storage shouldn't really be a problem.
Thanks

Idea of repeatable focus for GH2/GH3/GH4/etc while using focus-by-wire lenses http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9685/idea-of-repeatable-focus-for-gh2gh3gh4etc-while-using-focus-by-wire-lenses Fri, 21 Feb 2014 18:38:12 +0000 brooklynDev 9685@/talks/discussions The thing I would most want in the world from my gear at the moment is repeatable focus moves for my GH3 and it's nice Panny zoom lenses.

As you may or may not know, Panasonic makes some nice lenses for the Micro Four Thirds system. If you are using a M43 camera like the GH3 and you have use for fancy features like small form factors, good optical image stabilization, and excellent clarity there's a good chance you would want to make use of one or more of the these Panasonic branded Leica infused pieces of glass. One issue with them though: are you a videographer or AC doing precise focus? You are S-O-L. No follow focus for you. No repeatable focus. These lenses use the velocity of your barrel movements in it's algorithm for changing the focus in camera so no two moves are the same. The one and only workaround I have found on the net involves using the distance meter from the camera video output as the basis for tape/stickers: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3344/repeatable-focus-moves-with-focus-by-wire-lenses/p1

With the GH2/GH3 being such useful video cameras, and the GH4 looking like it will be a video freaking monster wouldn't it be GREAT if you could get repeatable focus from the focus-by-wire lenses which make up so much of the M43 system?

I understand that the lens focus is controlled electronically but why couldn't there be a 'repeatable focus' mode where the hardware, to a reasonable range of precision, supported the use of a follow focus and focus marks with consistent moves.

If I were a wealthy individual I'd love to put a software engineer or two on the case and see what could be done. What I have seen done that seems interesting is kickstarter projects crowdsourcing a particular software feature or program. Is it possible there are enough people who want what I want and are willing to throw a few dollars at it? I'd gladly throw some cash into making the lenses I already own more versatile.

Is anyone out there a software engineer with some experience with these systems who would, if the budget was there, be willing to look into solving this issue with focus-by-wire lenses? Are there any other Panasonic camera/lens folk out there who would be willing to throw some money at the promise of repeatable focus for that sweet 12-35mm or even the upcoming Nocticron 42.5mm?

Looking for the best hacks for shooting live video. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9570/looking-for-the-best-hacks-for-shooting-live-video. Sat, 08 Feb 2014 22:02:47 +0000 Ravage 9570@/talks/discussions Good evening everyone. I have had my GH2s for over a year, and have only dabbled with hacks because I am nervous to use them in a live shoot incase something goes wrong, I could loose out on having footage. I typically shoot live Rock bands. This year I will be filming 3 Cruises in April. (Monsters of Rock cruise, Moody Blues Cruise, and Cruise to the edge) I have 3 GH2 cameras (2 I bought new, and 1 I just purchased used) I would like to try one of the hacks that would be best for my type of shoots. Think Concert stage, can be inside with concert lighting and outside poolside or on the beach. I will also be doing a lot of meet and greets and interview stuff. The end result for everything I am shooting is for a DVD / Bluray disk for the People to buy (It will be a few months after the cruise) I have a few different lens, the 14-140 HD Panasonic lens looks the best over all. I did just purchase the 45-175 HD Power lens, I have only gotten to play with it a little, I got it to be more like a video camera with w/t toggle. SO far not to impressed. I also have a Large Canon lens that is modified to work with the camera. It is pretty good but I still need some time with it to use it better. (Canon BCTV lens with Powered w/t) I realize that I could record at much faster data rates that would make it look better but that would cut down on how much I could record. So I would like to keep my record times to allow for a 2 hour show. I already have about 8 of the San Disk Extreme 45MB/s and I have a few 40 and 30 cards as well. I would prefer not to buy anymore at this point. Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated. Dave "Ravage" Stabley

Best hack for GH2 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8491/best-hack-for-gh2 Sun, 20 Oct 2013 22:21:12 +0000 Ezxxx 8491@/talks/discussions Hi, I'm a photographer and just bought a GH2 to practice my video skills. I previously did a couple of jobs as a dop using a 5Diii, a black magic and a C300 and what I'm looking at to get from the GH2 is the maximum quality. I don't need to shoot lengthy segments but I need the best image (especially in dark environment). I know I probably will never get the quality of a ML 5Diii, C300 or BMCC but this is for practice and personal projects. Could anyone suggest a few hacks?

Cheers.

GH_2 PTools problem http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7594/gh_2-ptools-problem- Wed, 24 Jul 2013 18:35:00 +0000 tokyo187 7594@/talks/discussions I am new to this whole process. I have modded only on PC's, never camera's. I have downloaded PTools as prompted. I have also tried several different settings redshift_v4, moon, apocolypse now, just to see if I could get to work. ptools doesn't recognize any of the files for uploading. The only one it does recognize is the -V103 which is supposed to emulate the original firmware. Please help! I think the Sanity 5 patch I bought the GH2 with is corrupted, because In video mode it's stuck in automatic. I can't change the ISO, or anything. Very strange. I find the GH2's firmware rather shoddy to begin with. If there are any really good firmware updates that you would recommend after the ptools issue is fixed, I would very much appreciate that as well.

Thanks!!

I was using a SanDisk Extreme 16gb 45 MB/s class 10 card, and I thought that it was maybe too slow for high bit rate 60p (FlowMotion 2.02). I then bought a SanDisk Extreme Pro 16gb 95MB/s class 10 card and the problem was still here, no improvement what so ever ! I then tried lower bit rate hacks. Here's my course : FlowMotion > CanisMajoris Day PM > SpanMyBitchUp > EosHD Unified 88 Mbit. And I still have the same problem ! Please help and explain this problem !

Thank you.

Flow Motion v2 vs. Moon Trial 5 opinions. Please? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7338/flow-motion-v2-vs.-moon-trial-5-opinions.-please Mon, 24 Jun 2013 16:14:44 +0000 geist878 7338@/talks/discussions Hello,

I'm a film student in my last year and I am doing my senior projects. I have a GH2 that I hacked with the Moon Trail 5 settings after asking some classmates and doing some research. And I am very happy with how my projects are coming out with Moon, but I have this nagging feeling that I didn't do the right thing. Now I've done some more research and a lot of people have been using Flow Motion v2. There doesn't seem to be anything out there directly comparing the two. And because of my ignorance of the terminology used when talking about the hacks, I can't figure it out for myself.

So now I am asking for some opinions about the two hacks compared to one-another. What are they good at? What are they bad at? Which one is the best bet if you want to make films and not do a ton of color grading?

Thanks for reading all that.

Faster FAT32 write speed using new formatter? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5865/faster-fat32-write-speed-using-new-formatter Tue, 22 Jan 2013 05:58:27 +0000 _gl 5865@/talks/discussions I just heard about this utility that formats FAT32 devices (like memory cards) with a better alignment - it's supposed increase write speed: http://reboot.pro/topic/16783-rmprepusb-faster-fat32-access-test-version/ I have no time to test this now, maybe someone wants to check it out.

People are reporting write increases of ~20%, but this is tested on a PC and maybe that won't translate to cameras. Worth comparing with their in-built formatting though, might help with marginal card/hack combinations.

Original Firmware vs Hack (GH2) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4474/original-firmware-vs-hack-gh2 Wed, 05 Sep 2012 11:46:32 +0000 davidhjlindberg 4474@/talks/discussions Maybe there is a thread like this, and if so I apologize and admin can just delete this.

I've started to think about how much difference is there between the original firmware and the hacks we get here. There sure are improvements but it often leads to higher bitrate > larger files > larger disks > less money. So I want to see if the hacks are worth the extra spaces it takes. I'm not skeptic about the hacks I just want to hear others opinions and comparisons.

In this thread it would be nice to see comparisons between the original firmware and different hacks. And yes, some hacks does not only improve the quality right from the camera though some can help you when it comes to grading for example. Maybe we can see grading comparisons of that as well?

So if you got pics or videos with comparisons of the original and some hacks, please use this thread to show that and keep this thread only for discussing these questions.

GH2 Hardware modifications - (not for the faint-hearted) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2555/gh2-hardware-modifications-not-for-the-faint-hearted Sun, 11 Mar 2012 19:48:14 +0000 Roberto 2555@/talks/discussions As GH-2s get used and misused, a number of unrepairable items and units will start to accumulate in repair shops. I was taking a look through the repair manual to see if it would be possible to remove the LVF or the LCD and re-locate it elsewhere; (for me, to the side of the lens as with a shoulder-mounted ENG camera). This would be effectively replicating a bench-testing setup but requiring a separate housing for the viewfinder outside the existing camera body. Extension cables exist, like the Part No RFKZ0477 which connects the EVF further away (on the bench top) to the circuit board , for testing purposes. A similar cable may exist for the LCD screen.

Well, this mod looks at first to be doable by the tech savvy or foolhardy. (!) CARE! viewfinder screens can carry high voltages!! [Edit 18 May] Added picture: for some of us it is highly desirable to have a camera truly on the shoulder with the sensor-plane rotating on the axis of the operator's body. A re-located eyepiece can enable this.

Cost: Longer ribbon cable $60. Electronic work: Zero, except perhaps encasing the cable in shielding and insulation. Main skills needed: Design, care with tiny screws, safety, maybe cutting & bending plastic, adhesives.

GF2 Still Pictures Hacks? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2700/gf2-still-pictures-hacks Mon, 26 Mar 2012 21:03:02 +0000 sugarandspam 2700@/talks/discussions Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anybody has been working on hacks for the "Still Pictures" modes of the GF2 (or any of the Panasonic DMC series for that matter), or if anybody would be interested in doing so? Vitality has done some AMAZING work on the video portion of the different cameras, but the truth is I just don't shoot video that much...

I would be very interested in having firmware hacks for Still Pictures, in particular modifed settings for the "Auto (burst) bracketing".

I'd be willing to work on the hacks, but I've never hacked any firmware and I have absolutely no idea where to start. I've coded a little bit in assembly language a while back (and I regularly code in high-level languages), but I wouldn't mind getting back into it if necessary.

Looking forward to a good discussion on the subject... :)
