Glidecam Model for GH2 with Light Lenses

I’m looking into getting a Glidecam and need some advice regarding choosing the right model in regards to the payload.

I currently have a Zhiyun Crane V2 that I use with my GH2 and it supports a payload of 0.8 to 3.9 lbs. The lightest setup I use on it (GH2+20mm f/1.7 version 1) is around 1.2 lbs while the heavier ones go up to right around 3.9 lbs.

The problem is that I’m recovering from some health problems and an upcoming surgery next week that make walking in the way meant to reduce vertical jitter easier said than done. Thus, I’m looking at a Glidecam in the hopes of getting more of a swaying up and down than the abrupt jerks I have with my motorized gimbal.

The Glidcam HD-1000 has been advertised as handling a payload from 1.5 lbs to 3 lbs. The Glidecam HD-2000 has been advertised as handling 2-6 lbs. The HD-4000 advertises 4-10 lbs. None of these seems (at least on paper) to be able to cover the full range I use.

To make things even more complicated, I am considering combining the Crane V2 and Glidecam in the DIY Trinity knockoff approach that Momentum Productions popularized - which would mean needing a minimum payload of 3.6 lbs supported for the Glidecam.

My question is, has anyone had experience with different Glidecam on a GH2? Can any of them handle a setup as light as the GH2+pancake even though on paper it would be too light? Is using too light a weight or too heavy a weight more of a problem?

Hi all! I am selling my Glidecam HD 1000, as I'm focusing more on still photography these days and don't really have a use for it. Great condition with an extra top plate with a Manfrotto quick release adaptor (577) on it, which makes it easier to swap out cameras. Located in the EU (Netherlands) and I'm happy to pack it up and ship to you (signed-for only). Not sure if I still have the box, but I know the manual is kicking around here somewhere.

Steadicams vs 3 Axis Gimbals

Since the more expensive of the former, such as Blackbird, are comparable cost to cheaper part assembled CAME units. Is it safe to say the older fly-cam/glide-cam type devices have proven inferior to 'active' 3 axis gimbals? In considering purchasing stabilisation for m43rds GH4, where Im shooting quite short takes around 8 seconds of pans and very short track and travels, have 3 axis gimbals made a Fait accompli of older designs?

Hi everyone! I've been away for awhile - shooting commercial work with my newly acquired Sony CineAlta F3 on multiple projects since last Spring. Then I had the opportunity to shoot a couple of weddings this past August with our trusty light workhorse GH2's and wanted to share the incredible images still possible from this now almost forgotten discarded non 4K camera. Ha ha! IMO the image coming off the GH2 sensor is still pretty special. Shot with Lpowells completely stable flowmotion 2 settings on all cameras, this footage has very little colour correction, some adjusted exposure stuff, and no noise reduction applied. I used Pentax SMC Takumar glass for everything accept the steadicam shots (SLR Magic 12mm). Speedbooster on just one of the 4 cameras. Post was done in FCPX. We have many camera options at our disposal today - and I'm a huge fan of finding something that works for you and sticking with it to maximize it's potential regardless of whatever new toy comes out. I want to encourage everyone - that you can do your best work with what you already have! Just get out there and shoot, have fun, be respectful of others, and enjoy the journey. Cheers! Paul.

My GH2's continue to get used in the most demanding of environments. I shot this corporate piece using GH2's in minus 20 weather in Edmonton, Canada back in November. Not a single card error or power issue, using Flowmotion 2.02. Cameras were rock solid. The weather made the grease in the takumar lens barrels pretty sluggish but everything held up great for the exterior shots. I continue to use a full minus green gel fixed against the sensor and manually WB for superb balanced colors with zero green cast for all interior and exterior conditions. I used a Kessler pocket dolly for slides and an hd400 glidecam for upping the production value. Lift shots we're from a 60ft Genie we hired out. Interviews were shot with 50mm and 35mm (with speedbooster). Interior interview lighting was with a 1k to a 5x3 bounce and a couple of Lowell pro kickers for hair and background lighting. Edited and coloured in the much improved FCPX 10.1

Best lens for stabiliser / glidecam / steadycam

Hi,

I've recently fallen in love with glidecam shots and want to shoot with it more :). I have shoot this vid (my second time using glidecam)

with glidecam hd-1000, gh2 and 20mm f1.7.

And here are my findings:

Love small weight of full set. Allows you to hold frame for long time.
Love low light performance of this lens.
I'm happy with focal lenght however never had oportunity to try wider angle. Common opinion is that they come out even better with stabiliser (however I'm quite happy with framing on this ocasion).
Didn't like slow AF I was loosing focus often and it took time to refocus (however that time I had "continuus AF" turned on, now I'll be refocusing on press of remote shutter).

Minding above criteria would you recomend an "ultimate" lens to work with stabiliser / glidecam ?

GH2 - Keep Calm & Pumpkin On

This was a fun two hour shoot with two GH2's. Shot using Super Takumar lenses 20mm, 35mm, 50mm macro, 135mm, and the SLR Magic 12mm. I was able to scout the location the day before and had lots of ideas for the promo. It is often a challenge working with kids, but I quite enjoy it when things go right..ha ha. Even though I'm starting to butt up against the GH2's camera limitations I love it...and I've still gotta wait quite awhile before I get Amira : ) -Shot using Flowmotion 2.02, smooth, all -2, no filters, monopod, glidecam 4000.

shot 95% of this in 2 days just to do a little more testing of the weight of the BMCC on a Glidecam HD2000 and a 12ft CobraCrane. I didn't put a whole lot of time into grading, and this isn't a video showing off DR, raw ability or flaws, just simple "FLoATing BMCC" video. If you notice I purposely shot on some rough terrain to see if any jello would pop up but It did fine.

Shot using Lpowell FM 2.02 80% slomo 24H - Thanks for this great work! I have many reasons to stick with my GH2, warts and all. Like great great images thanks to the wizardry of lpowell, cbrandin, driftwood, vitaliy. So much hard work...much appreciated. This is a field test of the 80% 24H in it's usefullness for some telephoto glide ideas I have for an upcoming wedding this October. Shot on a 35mm Takumar f4 1/250 Standard -2-2-2-2. SLR Magic 12mm - MUST.HAVE.HOOD!

Desperately seeking advice for a hood option for this lens. Searches yield no results, other than I need a 58-77mm step up ring to do this without vignetting. I can't be alone in this issue! I am constantly battling flares and lighting artifacts whenever the sun hits it. This is my glidecam lens and its becoming very problematic to shoot with. For instance, my T2i glidecam setup had a 17-50mm and has zero issues with flares. Is this more than a hood issue, could it be a lens coating issue?

Glidecam HD-4000 stabilizer usage with HDSLRs

im borrowing a gh2 and fs-100 for a project where i need a stabilizer that can handle the individual weight of both cams. will be using a longer zeiss lense so gh2 set up is a bit heavier than the typical stock setup. should i get a lighter rig for them (hd2ooo) or something like the hd4ooo? the gh2 config weighs in @ 3.5lbs (lens + base plate w/camera). anyone used the hd4000 extensively with smaller dslrs? if so, please share your experiences. thanks
