GH3 Audio Dropout Issue http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7670/gh3-audio-dropout-issue Fri, 02 Aug 2013 20:01:36 +0000 rubefink 7670@/talks/discussions I'm shooting in FHD 24p with the most recent 1.2 firmware update. I'm losing audio on the ends of my clips. About 24 frames at the back end of a clip and about 4 frames at the front.

I took a screen grab from premiere so you can see how the waveform flatlines. https://www.dropbox.com/s/6f3ehk1dk3v986c/Audio%20Chopped%20off.jpg

This is a quirk that I may be able to work around by recording a second longer than usual but where it causes trouble is when you span a clip. The video is seamless but I do lose about a second of audio in between each clip which can ruin an interview if for some reason I don't have a second recorder set up.

This is at least on my camera.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Two G6 Cameras or One GH3 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7646/two-g6-cameras-or-one-gh3 Wed, 31 Jul 2013 19:19:10 +0000 Mckinise 7646@/talks/discussions I just sold my GH2 and I am going to have about $1500 or so to spend on a camera. I don't need it until early October. I will be using it for a feature length movie. My Options:

1- Two Lumix G6 cameras Now.

2- GH3 now

3- Lumix G6 + Better glass

Things to Ponder:

  • Numerous shorts, First Feature. Easier is better for me at this point.
  • Two G6 cameras will let me shoot scenes a heck of a lot faster.
  • I do most of the visual editing, color correction, color grading (I am okay, but far from great.)
  • I will be lighting for the look I want
  • I will be putting this in a few theaters myself and maybe a couple small festivals.
  • I have a pretty good sound guy, so that side is covered.

I am working on bettering my skills between now and October. Every day I am working with footage and studying. Still, I know this will be a challenge. What do you guys think will work best for my needs?

Expose in the Zone - getting the best image for grading. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3773/expose-in-the-zone-getting-the-best-image-for-grading. Tue, 03 Jul 2012 21:45:46 +0000 shian 3773@/talks/discussions There isn't an "Education" category, but maybe there should be. I would have put this in there instead.

Many people following this thread - http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1937/finding-face-exposure-on-gh2#Item_51 - have heard me talk about the 4 stop (technically 5-stop) "Target Range" (or Target Zone) for DSLRs in which you should expose your scene to get clean images that grade exceptionally well with plenty of detail in the blacks and highlights.

But I've received so many questions about what exactly I mean by "the zone system" that I put this video together to demonstrate what I mean and why.

While I only touch very briefly on the actual Ansel Adams Zone System, which is way more complicated than explained herein, if you light and expose your scene using this "zone" technique, you'll never worry about macro-blocking, noisy blacks, or blown out highlights again.

...And you'll be able to grade the living hell out of the footage.

Low Cost GH3 Rig http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6807/low-cost-gh3-rig Thu, 25 Apr 2013 16:46:37 +0000 Sph1nxster 6807@/talks/discussions After the hot shoe on one of my GH3s broke i started looking into solutions for mounting an LED light on top for our next wedding.

We ended up getting an Opteka X-Grip MK II.

The only modification I had to make to it was to cut off the legs because they interfered with our tripods and buy a 1/4 UNC bolt and cut to size for mounting the quickplate underneath.

All in all it set me back £38 and I'm now able to mount all our other stuff at the side as well which is a big bonus.

It just fits the GH3 with battery grip and if positioned far enough right it can allow for battery changes as well into the grip.

If you are not needing to mount a lot of kit then this works very well and keep everything light weight.

In this post http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7535/gh3-loose-hot-shoe-pictures#Item_1 I show the reason I had to get a cage, and how weak the GH3 hot shoe is, I hope this video helps someone else to make a decision on whether to get this cage or not. 5dtoRGB and GH3 transcoding http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7401/5dtorgb-and-gh3-transcoding Mon, 01 Jul 2013 11:24:08 +0000 mastroiani 7401@/talks/discussions I just purchazed 5dtoRGB Batch version of the software and wanted to transcode some IPB .MOV files form my GH3 camera. I used Full Range Luminance setting (screenshot attached). However, the resulting file is identical to the original .MOV file. I thought I was supposed to get a "flatter" image with some recovered highlights, perhaps? In fact, I might be wrong, but the resulting file has ever so slightly increased contrast. It's almost imperceptible and I might be wrong. I'll try to add screenshots to this posting.

In any case, I don't see any changes in the new transcoded file.

I also ran some MTS files from my hacked GH2 and the results are there! I get flat image from GH2 files, but not from GH3.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you all in advance.

USING a GH3/similar camera from shooting to and through post http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7726/using-a-gh3similar-camera-from-shooting-to-and-through-post Thu, 08 Aug 2013 14:09:04 +0000 rNeil 7726@/talks/discussions I'm looking for practical daily-use patterns, workflows, habits, and all for taking a "reel" of "footage" and working it into final output. General practices and perhaps into specifics at times. Having trouble finding same.

I've been looking all over the web for forums on how to use my cam (which happens to be a GH3, so ... what mostly) AND to do something with it ... and either there are esoteric and pointedly detailed discussions on the technical bits of shooting OR a highly detailed esoteric discussions of say, specific tasks in DV Resolve ... I'm sure at some point I might find interest in this, but it's not helpful now. It's handy to see that say, several here feel the .MOV on the GH3 is great at lower ISO, but the AVCHD better at higher ISO. Practical and handy.

That said, when I get into Premiere Pro and Speedgrade, where I've been totally lost at the settings to actually make the end result meet what my monitor shows ... I'm not finding a lot of help. I've tried (in SG) various settings from "no calibration" to about everything on that long list ... most things chosen in rendering make for an output that is harshly contrasty/saturated and a lot darker ... except for a couple of the gamma/MOV ones that result in a "thin", bright and washed-out final. No one on the SG forum even responds to requests on things like that, and I can't find any info that isn't contradicted by every other article out there.

I'd just love a practical discussion of what settings, practices, and patterns seem to work smoothly and consistently. Not just shooting or just post, but ... when combined ... make for a smooth workflow from planning through delivery. What kind of rendering settings work best for the files created by this camera? What LUT's or protocols or whatever to look for, what to avoid ... clearly, there are some good folks here at doing this stuff.

ANY comments would be so appreciated!

Secondary body for GH3 system http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7531/secondary-body-for-gh3-system Tue, 16 Jul 2013 11:10:18 +0000 larsarus 7531@/talks/discussions I recently had an accident with my GH3 which broke off the front of the internal flash casing (the camera still worked fine except for the flash), and it was time to get it repaired. Repair time could easily become 4-5 weeks they told me, and I am doing some exotic traveling in the mean time so I am looking for a second body to use with all my cool Panasonic m43-lenses that I can bring on this trip.

I do mostly stills, time-lapse, and occasionally some amateur videography at the moment. The second body should therefore be something good wrt stills (they probably all are), and something I could fool around with while the GH3 is primary on time-lapse-assignment, maybe even do a secondary time-lapse sequence (so internal intervalometer would be nice). Video quality should be ok but does not need to be on par with the GH3. The body should also be smaller (and a lot cheaper) than the GH3, since it will be a B-body I want to bring "just in case" in the bag when the GH3 returns, but which will probably often not be used at all. Compatibility with my Metz mecablitz 58 AF-2 for Olympus / Panasonic / Leica is also something I want.

Anyone in a similar situation? Or just with a good suggestion? I am currently leaning towards something Olympus just to get some experience with in-body image stabilisation compared to Panasonic OIS (and to get stabilisation with the manual / adaptor-mounted lenses).

Wilting Flowers, Fading Songs: A Documentary Project about a tribe from the Western Himalayas http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7533/wilting-flowers-fading-songs-a-documentary-project-about-a-tribe-from-the-western-himalayas Tue, 16 Jul 2013 12:23:28 +0000 feonn 7533@/talks/discussions Hi there! In the last 3 years I've been involved in documenting the oral traditions of a very small ethnic community in Ladakh, India near the border with Pakistan. Much of the work was done on self funding until now, but this time not possible :/ so we started an Inidegogo campaign - http://igg.me/at/fadingsongs

They are called "Brokpa" (aka 'Highlander' - a bit neglectful name given by the Ladakhis) and are quiet popular nowadays with tourist because of their aryan origin, Mediterranean features and gorgeous traditional dresses and ornaments. But no one knows a bit about their culture, as they are not documented at all and local government is treating them quiet bad also!

The problem is that they are less than 2000 in population and due to the impact of modernisation and sensitive politic situation with Pakistan and China, all their traditions are very rapidly diminishing... Nowadays they are kept only by a very few members from the older generation with not much hope to be passed to the younger one :( This will very soon lead to an irretrievable loss of identity :/

I saw it myself and that was my biggest motivation for starting this documentary project. The idea is to make at the end a series of short documentaries and bring all of them along with music recordings and research papers online accessible for everyone and to the community as well. We've managed to do much of this work, but still need one more really extensive fieldwork (~50 days on spot or two and a half months the whole trip).

This thread is not really to ask for money (though every $ will be welcome :p) but just to let you know about this. It will be much appreciated if you could spread the word about the campaign, share it etc. As you know campaign fundings depends very much on clicks and activity... so a bowing thanks for every share! - http://igg.me/at/fadingsongs

The above footage was shot in 2011 when we had a 5d mkii and a GH13. It's a quick edit, as much of the footage and audio are still being edited. This year I have a GH3 (really hope for a hack soon) + some minolta md glass and SLR magic 25mm & 12mm and a BMPC if I'm lucky enough to get it before 15th September. The audio will be on a Marantz 661 + NT-4 and NTG-2 with lots of batteries. They don't have electricity yet in those villages, so we had to charge all batteries and laptop on the solar panels of the locals. That was very time consuming and it's another reason we decided to try to raise some more money to cover a generator.

I'm be happy for any feedback, suggestions and support! If you know new budget ways to charge in the field, please let me know!

GH3 Feature film grabs. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7296/gh3-feature-film-grabs. Wed, 19 Jun 2013 10:16:09 +0000 ryancglover 7296@/talks/discussions Hey folks. Just wanted to share some grabs from the first project I've DPed on the GH3. A microbudget feature we shot incredibly fast with a tiny crew at the beginning of June. The film was directed by Adam Christie.

I used the 50Mbps mode and Lomo lenses, mostly a 50mm, which I stopped down to between 5.6 and 8 because our locations were so important to the story.

Compared to my GH2, I really loved the battery life and how the HDMI image doesn't do anything funky when you hit record. The display info always disappearing was frustrating though.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

Thanks for looking!

Looking for a GH3 match Hack http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7515/looking-for-a-gh3-match-hack Sat, 13 Jul 2013 13:54:49 +0000 ftwphoto 7515@/talks/discussions So I've been involved in the hack community since the GH1, but I find there are just way to many things I don't understand anymore. Basically, I do events, and I own 2 GH2s and a GH3, and I would like to normalize my GH2s to match the GH3 in terms of bit rate and color (if possible).

SPANNING is absolutely needed, as I often shoot longer then 1hr.

I would really like the hack to have matching bit rates so- 24H/L 72mbps/50mbps, 30H/L 72mbps/50mbps, and whatever works for 1080i and 720p.

I've heard of GH3onaGH2, but I can't seem to find that hack setting anywhere. Is it called something different now?

Any advice would be great!

Thanks, Quinn

How to shoot Video like an Amateur with the GH3 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7493/how-to-shoot-video-like-an-amateur-with-the-gh3- Thu, 11 Jul 2013 13:58:57 +0000 mpgxsvcd 7493@/talks/discussions I shot the video below last year at the SCS Youth National Climbing Championships with the GH2, 25mm F1.4 lens, and 45mm F1.8 lens with the 2.6x 1080p teleconverter. I really couldn’t hold it still no matter what I did because it didn’t have image stabilization. I had the 14-140mm lens with me as well but the climbing gym was way too dark to use a small aperture lens.

This year I specifically bought the GH3 and 35-100mm F2.8 to shoot the National Championships. I have to remain very mobile at the comp going from climb to climb so a tripod or even a monopod is not really practical. There are usually 5 or 6 rows of people in front of you so it is hard to shoot over them. I usually lift the camera over my head and use the flip-out screen to frame the shot.

I shot the video below entirely hand held with the GH3 and 35-100mm F2.8. About half of the shots were at 100mm and I never had to use the ETC mode. I have a GoPro 3 Black that I leave running for wide angle shots at 4k and 15 FPS or 720p @ 120 FPS. However, the GoPro really isn’t in the Video Quality league that the GH3 is even at Ultra-HD resolutions.

I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the results from a stabilization stand point this year. I had to stabilize a few of the 100mm shots in software but it is clearly better than last year’s results without the in-lens stabilization.

There is also the fact that I had a stake in the game for some of the shots. My son and his teammates made it much further in the competition this year. Therefore, I was shaking like a leaf in those shots.

My son’s final climb starts at 4:11 into the video. Even with the software stabilization it was obvious that I was shaking uncontrollably. Just check the two clips after that on the same climb. They are almost rock solid without any software IS at all. Those clips were taken almost an hour later after my heart rate had a chance to come back down out of the stratosphere.

In the end my son jumped from last place to 3rd in the final round and made the US National Team for the first time. His teammate also won his 4th consecutive National title and will compete at Worlds next month.

Let me know what you think about this video. I didn’t do any color grading at all. This is simply the Scenery color profile essentially straight out of the camera. I used AFF the entire time and I use the touch screen hand held for all of the focus pulls.

I can’t believe how well some of the iPad focus pulls turned out.

Anyone who says that m4/3s focus isn’t fast enough or accurate enough is simply just doing it wrong or they are basing that opinion off of the older cameras. It is the easiest thing to just drag the focus from object to object on the LCD screen. I never use the EVF either. I think the LCD screen is much easier to use.

I also save stills from these videos directly in the cameras playback mode to upload them to facebook for instant sharing. Most people are shocked at how good the quality of the movie stills is. They are also surprised when I have uploaded pictures of their climber before the climber is even done climbing their route.

I shoot the videos in stills mode. Most people assume that you have to use full manual controls or at least shutter priority mode for video to control the shutter speed. However, I use the flicker control setting to fix the shutter speed to 1/120 of a second for the 1080p @ 60 FPS video I shoot. This is also a good way to get around the fact that the GH3 only does 1/125 of a second shutter speed for stills. The flicker control is a true 1/120 of a second shutter duration.

Overall I couldn’t be happier than I am with both the GH3 and the 35-100mm F2.8 lens. I use it in full auto mode for video so I can even hand the camera off to someone else if I need them to shoot some video.

I never intend to sell my videos so I am not a Professional photographer. However, I do want the best quality. With the GH3 + 35-100mm I can get that. However, lately I have been recommending the FZ200 and LX7 to the other climbing parents and they are able to get very similar results for much less money.

The days of needing $10,000 worth of gear to shoot high quality footage are over. The GH3 is better than anything else I have ever shot with for video and it holds its own for stills against the APS-C cameras.

Panasonic GH3 firmware update V1.2 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7470/panasonic-gh3-firmware-update-v1.2 Tue, 09 Jul 2013 10:51:25 +0000 mpgxsvcd 7470@/talks/discussions I couldn't find any other threads on the new GH3 firmware V1.2. If this isn't the correct place to post please move it.

It appears that low light AF is improved. and several new settings are added. I don't fully understand when AF is improved though. Is it when the scene is underexposed or just when you are using a high ISO? I have tried some tests with my v1.1 firmware GH3 but it seems to do an excellent job already without the update.

Has anyone applied the update already. Will applying this update prevent you from using a Hack/Patch that is based off of the v1.1 firmware? If so then I imagine a lot of people won't update right away. I don't intend to hack my GH3 so I will give v1.2 a shot.

http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/index2.html

There is a good explanation of the low light focusing by Andy Westlake at the link below.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/07/09/panasonic-releases-firmware-updates-for-lumix-dmc-gh3-and-g5-mirrorless-cameras

Here are the changes

Ver.1.2

"Low Light AF" is added that makes it possible to set focus on the subject in low-lit situations (-3EV).

"Silent Mode" is added which suppresses electronic shutter, shutter sound, operation sound and flash emission with a single setting.

"Exposure Comp. Reset" is added which resets the setting of exposure compensation to ±0 whenever the camera is turned off or the shooting mode is changed.

Performance of AF is enhanced in use with H-PS14042 and H-PS45175.

Connection problem with Apple Mac computers via Wi-Fi is fixed.

PROJECT SUMMARY:
For 20 years (1993-2013), I got used to go with my girlfriends to New York, and set my love memories on film...
WOMANHATTAN is a film from my point of view as an obsessive director: the obsession of filming my girlfriends in New York, the obsession of magnifying them, the technological obsession of finding the camera shots that best reflected my feelings.
WOMANHATTAN is a trip back in time, before and after 9/11, where I take us to the heart of New York and its urban landscapes, my thoughts on the passing of time, on love and the possibility of being free one day from my obsessions, and living fully the present and my love life. To discover my world here is the teaser :

Calling Brighton & Sussex p-v'ers: BBC South East Today broadcast 'BOAT' - from hacked GH2 & GH3! http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7252/calling-brighton-sussex-p-vers-bbc-south-east-today-broadcast-boat-from-hacked-gh2-gh3 Fri, 14 Jun 2013 14:12:49 +0000 driftwood 7252@/talks/discussions A dear theatre-maker mate of mine recently passed away and his dying wish was for Brighton to have its very own Open Air Theatre (BOAT). The BBC have just broadcast today (check BBC iPlayer later) on South East Today parts of the following Vimeo link (they downloaded the footage from Vimeo :-) )

I made this spur-of-the-moment video (totally unprepared) in his last get together on Brighton & Hove's Lawns near the seafront. And it was great to see the Beeb use parts of it (and that the Panasonic GHx cameras are absolutely fine for broadcast!). Adrian's words are emphatic and amazing for a man in so much pain - he died only a few days later from his disease, pancreatic cancer. He only found out he had it two months ago and I just can't imagine him not being around anymore. He was very brave to the end.

Anyway, I'm mainly calling out to local personal-viewers who are invited to come along and lend support to this Sunday's BOAT fundraiser at Brighton's Dome theatre for a night of comedy. There are still a few tickets left and all proceeds go towards the building of the theatre. If you can't make it, please try and support it or donate via the Facebook link on the Vimeo page. Your help will turn an old and secluded bowling lawn into an amazing open air theatre scheduled for opening next May - and part of the Brighton Festival. Expects lots of classic Shakespeare performances, local theatre, open-air film screenings, and even live streaming events.

If you do make it down to the event - come and say hello to me!

Many thanks,

Nick
