I'm currently using the reliable 2 patch and it's great - works perfectly with class my 6 cards - huge thanks to Vitaly and lpowell. However, I'd love to get rid of the 50i wrapper. Is there some combination of the max latitude patch and the reliable 2 patch that would let me do that? I saw back in June that lpowell was thinking about it, but there doesn't seem to be any update. Sorry if I've missed something...

Great time to own GH1 and GH2 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/355/great-time-to-own-gh1-and-gh2 Fri, 08 Jul 2011 10:30:35 +0000 stoney 355@/talks/discussions
GH23 as A cam and GH17 as B cam.

Use GH17 for time-lapse. Prolong lifespan of precious GH2 sensor :)

We don't discuss often, but GH2 is a very nice photo camera, too.]]>
VIDEO: Panasonic GH1 - 100Mbps Hack Test http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/175/video-panasonic-gh1-100mbps-hack-test Sat, 04 Jun 2011 03:59:41 +0000 tomb 175@/talks/discussions Thanks for all your hard work Vitaliy!!!

This test was filmed using an "unhackable" Panasonic GH1. The model GH1 I had was "unhackable" until its firmware was recently hacked again by Vitaliy Kiselev. The hack was made available on May 29, 2011, using PTool 3.55d.

The hack profile settings I used for this video allow the camera to record file speeds of up to 100Mbps. This setting is not meant to be used all the time as it may cause the camera to cease recording when filming extremely detailed scenes like foliage. So to test this, I filmed...some foliage.

Most of my foliage shots (and a few shots of my beagles) were under 30 seconds. Some people report that their camera shut down after only 6-10 seconds of filming foliage with the 100Mbps patch. My camera did not give me any problems at all with the 100Mbps patch, though.

I checked out the video MTS clip files with MediaInfo and the "Maximum Overall Bitrate" is listed at 108 Mbps. Keep in mind that this doesn't actually mean that the file actually ever hit 108Mbps.
LPowell explains this :
"The 108Mbps figure that MediaInfo reports is metadata recorded in the file header by the AVCHD encoder. This tells the decoder in advance the maximum bitrate it must be prepared to decode. In practice, I have only rarely seen peak bitrates exceed 100Mbps in test files I've shot with the Max Latitude Patch. The 1-17Mbps readings are running average bitrates, which can range up to 40-50Mbps. The GH1's AVCHD encoder begins each clip with a key frame encoded with a low bitrate which then increases over time, and varies depending on the complexity of the subject matter."

Also - I wanted to test the GH1 with my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L zoom lens. I attached the lens to my GH1 via a $30 Fotodiox EOS-MFT lens adapter.

Note that my copy of the Panasonic GH1 has some banding issues. The serial number on my camera starts with WE0G****, which means it's manufacture date was July 2010. Supposedly, the GH1 can be purchased brand new and with manufacture dates as recent as March 2011. The newer the manufacture date, the less the banding is supposed to be.

The next 2 tests that I will do with my newly hacked GH1 and it's 100Mbps patch are the following:
1. Grass shot, locked down on tripod.
2. Star chart test.
For both of these high-detail tests I will let the camera roll for as long as it will roll. I will also be using a sharp, wider Canon L series lens. My goal is to see how long of a shot I can get before the bitrate goes too high for the camera, buffer or SDHC card to handle.

Also - soon I will be posting some footage with the Canon L Series lenses and my Panasonic GH2. Then we can compare the quality of the hacked GH1, and the unhacked, newer GH2.

Then finally, when Vitaliy hacks the GH2, I'll post footage of the hacked GH2!

EQUIPMENT, Etc:

Camera: Panasonic GH1
Serial: WE0G****
Hacked Firmware: 100Mbps Max Latitude Patch V2
Film Style: "SMOOTH" (-2, -2, 0, 0)

SDHC Card: 32GB Transcend (Class 10)

Lens: Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L
Aperture: 2.8 (because the Canon EOS lens system does NOT have a MANUAL aperture, the aperture has to be set on a Canon EOS camera body...then taken off and attached to the GH1, and used with whatever aperture was set on the EOS body).
Shutter speed: Varies due to having to keep the aperture at 2.8
ISO: 160 exterior shots...between 400-640 indoor shots

CC: FCP 3-Way Color Correction (only used to correct exposure...I didn't have my LCD brightness set proper when recording)]]>

GH1 Using multiple memory cards http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/313/-gh1-using-multiple-memory-cards- Fri, 01 Jul 2011 09:21:48 +0000 DeanL3386 313@/talks/discussions Can the GH1 go faster than 60 fps? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/251/can-the-gh1-go-faster-than-60-fps Sun, 19 Jun 2011 05:46:39 +0000 jefforig 251@/talks/discussions Is it possible to speed up the fps faster than 60 fps in the GH1?

Is there a patch out there I can load?
Anyone have luck with this?

@Lpowell have you experimented with this? I would be interested to know your findings.

Plus, I am not talking about using Twixtor, Optical Flow, or After Effects. I want true in-camera speed. Then I can manipulate later with software.

Thanks.]]>
Manual video using dedicated video shutter http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/236/manual-video-using-dedicated-video-shutter Wed, 15 Jun 2011 21:29:15 +0000 zcream 236@/talks/discussions
Here the shutter does not work as it seems to only activate the shutter button not the video record.

Would Vitaliy consider allowing us to map the shutter button to take video in the manual video mode ?]]>

Any cheap AF zoom lens for GH1? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/170/any-cheap-af-zoom-lens-for-gh1 Thu, 02 Jun 2011 23:39:44 +0000 vishalrana 170@/talks/discussions
Now I gotta find a lens that is cheap, future-proof and hopefully able to keep focus during HD shoots.
I've just started reading a whole lot of stuff about adapters and different kinds of lens - nikon/olympus/tokina/canon FD and my head is spinning already.
So any suggestions for a good cheap lens adapter and a decent zoom lens upto 200/300/400mm?

Thanks in advance and for the great job Vitaliy and the community is doing.]]>
GH1 body only deal http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/144/gh1-body-only-deal Fri, 27 May 2011 09:43:11 +0000 stoney 144@/talks/discussions
GH2 is nice. But I rarely use the touchscreen. ETC was OK only at ISO 400 or lower. HDMI live out is nice but very limited. AGC... still not completely disabled. It has its own FPN issue... the horizontal banding. GH2 is definitely a better photo camera though, and its native 1080p24 is quite nice. When GH13 firmware was available to public, it took a few months to have stable lpowell setup. Frankly... I'll be waiting for lpowell's reliable mode for GH2. It could take months.

If one's main focus is video, $299 GH1 is no brainer. Get it before it goes out of production. I might... get one more soon. Sweeten it with Blackout-Powell Native 24p Patch. Yummy yummy]]>

Bracketing -> MultiExposure "middle level research" Setting in Ptool http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/161/bracketing-multiexposure-middle-level-research-setting-in-ptool- Wed, 01 Jun 2011 23:10:29 +0000 Toronto 161@/talks/discussions
It just says "changes bracketing settings to multiple exposure function", but how is "bracketing" different than "multiple exposure", as in an unhacked GH1 when you use the bracketing, it is taking multiple photos at different exposure levels, so they imply the same thing, so I need a clearer explanation from someone who understands what is actually going on and what is changing by enabling this setting choice.

Also as far as I know the GH1 does not combine the photos taken when bracketing into one hdr image, correct? So why would the note say "interface working but image combining not working"? Does that mean Vitaliy is attempting to turn the bracketing function into an auto hdr photo creating mode? If that could be possible it would be very high on my list as it would be amazing to have that feature instead of using something like photomatix to do the combining of all the multiple exposures taken in the (unhacked) bracketing mode into one hdr jpeg.

Bad 3rd party battery can cause weird behaviour or shutting off. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/152/bad-3rd-party-battery-can-cause-weird-behaviour-or-shutting-off. Mon, 30 May 2011 07:04:45 +0000 Toronto 152@/talks/discussions
This appears to be related to some kind of pressure sensitivity of the battery itself as it is a 3rd party battery, and I was having it shut off randomly off the tripod a couple times too, but I did notice this specific action always produced it shutting off the camera so it may help out those who can't figure out why this is happening, perhaps thinking it is a hacked camera setting, when it may just be how tight your camera is on the tripod. (In other words I could not even have it at normal tightness with the 3rd party battery, which kind of defeats the purpose of a tripod if I wanted to pan it wouldn't pan correctly since the thread was not tight enough into the camera to keep the camera on snug.

Update: I just tried the panasonic battery and could not replicate this problem (I could have the camera as tight as I wanted with the panasonic battery). So it appears only the 3rd party battery I got off ebay (dmw-blb13) has this pressure sensitivity issue. So if you get these 3rd party batteries, you may end up having to use them handheld most of the time so there is no pressure on the battery plate area of the camera.

I am not sure if this problem happend before I installed the 'unhackable' hack or not. I did notice that there was a setting related to 3rd party batteries in the new ptool (can't remember if I checked or unchecked it when making the hacked bin though), but the 3rd party battery was working normally for my 'unhackable' gh1 before I even tried to install ptool for the first time yesterday (I made a one hour recording on it before installing the new ptool), so maybe a setting of some kind could have some relation to this, but I can't know that for sure yet. I do know that only the 3rd party battery is affected either way though, as even after the new hack, my panasonic battery cannot reproduce this error.
