Sony NEX vs Panasonic G series (GF1,GF2, etc..)

I have a GH1 (hacked), however I'm very interested in a little camera for my travels. Good video quality is important to me. I've seen that you can get old sony nex cameras (sony nex 3 and 5) and 18-55 kit lens for cheap..about 300 $. Both models cannot allow full manual controls in video (you can't set ISO), however videos on vimeo looks pretty good. Of course nex camera and gf1/2 have different sensor , crop factor etc...so a comparison is not "fair", however I would be curious to know what (little) camera you can suggest for video quality: gf2/1 or sony nex 3-5?

I have seen lots of topics dealing with cheapy (and fast) cctv lens, c-mount lenses on Panasonic GH1/2. Vignetting is a serious issue on these lenses, in particular for wide angles; many videomakers on GHx use ETC; However, most of the problems of vignetting seems to be caused by the non-standard size (16/9 crop etc) of GHx-sensor, which is a little wider than standar M4/3; GF2/3 cameras, on the contrary, have standard M4/3 sensor, so these cameras shoud have less vignetting issue... What's your experience with GF1/2 and C-mount?

for example, here you can read an article about wide and fast c-mount lenses..they work better on GF series!

A keen-eyed person on the forum spotted that the GF2 might be able to accept a microphone input via the hot-shoe or the EVF socket

Does anyone here know any more about this?

GF2 is a strange camera in Video mode. Panasonic say in their manual that Flicker Red (Flicker reduction) when set to 1/50 >1/120 in video mode will lock the shutter. I agree from the tests i have done in bright daylight that it does, however it appears SOMETHING is changing when large amounts of light or dark is introduced quickly, it seems to have a trigger point. If you use a manual lens, set aperture, use an ND or VariND and set iso to 100, it appears you can shoot and lock shutter between 1/50 and 1/120.

In dark situations where the camera needs gain, i think the iso will follow a similar pattern, jumping at trigger points, but shutter and iso will be locked at what you set it to unless you pan the camera to a very bright or very dark area, this seems to trigger some change but not enough to correct exposure. Weird. I throw this out there for discussion, as there seems to be conflicting opinions on this and no real explanations on what the camera is doing.

GF2 Still Pictures Hacks?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anybody has been working on hacks for the "Still Pictures" modes of the GF2 (or any of the Panasonic DMC series for that matter), or if anybody would be interested in doing so? Vitality has done some AMAZING work on the video portion of the different cameras, but the truth is I just don't shoot video that much...

I would be very interested in having firmware hacks for Still Pictures, in particular modifed settings for the "Auto (burst) bracketing".

I'd be willing to work on the hacks, but I've never hacked any firmware and I have absolutely no idea where to start. I've coded a little bit in assembly language a while back (and I regularly code in high-level languages), but I wouldn't mind getting back into it if necessary.

Looking forward to a good discussion on the subject... :)

Just noticed that when I check the menu I see all languages, but the version still says 1.1 instead of 0.0.

I just wanted to see if the patch was installed on the camera, but the confirmation mentioned on the next link (should see version 0.0) doesn't seem to be set. http://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh1-hack/gh1-g2-and-gf1-hack-faq

GF2 as good "B" cam for the GH2?

I'm getting geeked out enough taking home movies that I'd love to get a 2nd camera to act as a "B" cam - something so when I edit I have another point of view. My local camera shops have GH2 bodies only, but I don't want to be out another $899 for this.
Out of GH1, GF1, GH2, G3, etc, which one would you recommend that would be the easiest to match footage up with? Being able to record long amounts of time is a plus; my "B" cam could sit on a tripod and get the wider angled shot.

GF2 Hack collecting

GF2 is likely to be the only GF model with a hotshoe and a touchscreen. It has a stereo mic-in and an accessory port for DMW-LVF1 eyepiece, too. It deserves sorta collector's edition, but it's getting dirt cheap right now.

Here's great news for GF2 owners. Vitaliy just needs two GF2 units delivered to him so that he can begin dumping firmware for hacking.

Let's raise money for him. Whoever donating will be helping themselves, too. Hacked GF2 will kick ass!!!

With all attention on GH2 setting development - and an amazing achievement it is - I'm curious whether the latest PTool will enable a hack with the GF2? Or is an earlier version of Ptool appropriate?

After the firmware update, this tiny lens becomes almost stepless on GF3. It will work like 14-140 at 14mm. I hope new GH2 firmware will enable the feature, too.
