I just got a used GF2 for some DIY projects and want try my luck in firmware manipulation. I want to start with some simple string changes or hiding GUI elements. Is this somehow possible with ptool and if not where whould I learn how to do this? The "Developer stuff" in the faq looks like a good start but I can't access any links in that section.

I just did 2x on some basic settings, AQ4, and default GOP 15. The video bitrate was set up 32Mbps, and the result was 33Mbps.

Hopefully we can start polishing it.

GX1's wrting speed is lower than GF2 with a same card http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16227/gx1s-wrting-speed-is-lower-than-gf2-with-a-same-card Sat, 24 Dec 2016 09:14:46 +0000 Mitchell718 16227@/talks/discussions Hi everyone, Merry Christmas!!

I owned a GF2 since 2012 and bought a used GX1 recently for video shooting.

I hacked my GF2 with settings with over 100 Mbps in MP4 and the gear worked well with my Sandisk 45m/s card (U-1) Then I hacked the GX1 with the same setting (for example, driftwood's MOON T9) and used the same Sandisk 45 m/s card. Surprisingly GX1 always showed writing error due to card speed, which never happened with my GF2! I tried several lower mbps settings at around 60-70 mbps with my GX1, no writing error came up, but the video became very unsmooth when played in my computer. The unsmooth playback is obviously caused by the insufficient writing speed during recording.

Quite confused that GX1, a camera supporting SDXC U1 card, could have insufficient wrting speed problem which never happens with GF2, an older model without SDXC card support.

I know GX1 is not a gear metioned often here, but I still would like to know any GX1 owner or any expert ( like @Vitality_Kiselev or @Driftwood :)) could help with it.

BTW, this is my first post and I would like to take the chance to thank every setting provider like @Vitality_Kiselev , @Driftwood for bringing my GF2 to a new level of videography. I have so much fun with it!!!

Thank you!

My question is: how do the hacked G-series cameras compare in terms of the best stable video quality available? I'm guessing, based on what I've read, that it's something like this:

GH2 > GH1 > GF2 > G2 > GF1.

Is that correct?

GF2 Patch wont exceed 1.1 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5721/gf2-patch-wont-exceed-1.1 Wed, 09 Jan 2013 06:14:30 +0000 Rails 5721@/talks/discussions Hi a newbie here trying to apply the PTool patch to my GF2. Followed all instructions and things go fine until I get to the 'Body version up' screen on my camera. Despite changing the new patched .bin filename to GF2__V12.bin and putting it in the SD root directory Version>>>1.1 is the only option showing. After selecting 'Yes' the menu obviously says 'Version up ongoing' but I am left with the standard 1.1 firmware.

I have formatted the SD before and afterwards and have tried every option I can think of (downloaded new PTools, used a variety of different digits V20 etc) and no closer after several nights of trying to figure this out

Im using an 16 gb Sandisk SDHC class 10 card

I have searched high and low for anyone with a similar GF2 issue in these forums to no avail. Apologies in advance if I have posted this in the wrong place. But any help or direction would be much appreciated!

GH1, GF1, G2: Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch - Version 2 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/223/gh1-gf1-g2-fast-action-3-frame-gop-patch-version-2- Mon, 13 Jun 2011 03:15:10 +0000 LPowell 223@/talks/discussions
As you may have heard, the latest version of PTool 3.56d liberates all previously unhackable versions of not only the GH1, but the GF1 as well as previously hackable G2 cameras. (Unfortunately, the newest G2 models can no longer be hacked.) In addition, PTool now provides a variety of new patches that I've been able to incorporate into the Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch, making it more versatile than ever.

To make use of these new features, download PTool 3.56d from the following link:

https://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-hack/ptool-software

The Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch is ideally suited for the GF1 and G2 cameras' hardware capabilities. The NTSC version of these cameras produces native 720p30 video streams in both AVCHD SH mode and in MJPEG HD mode. This patch boosts the peak bitrate of both video modes to over 50Mbps and in SH mode uses a remarkably short 3-frame GOP-size, recording 10 key frames per second. (This 3-frame GOP is used in PAL AVCHD SH mode as well, recording at 720p25.) Using such a high density of key frames enables the Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch to maintain excellent image quality while tracking rapid moving objects.

In addition, all GF1 and G2 may now be freely switched between NTSC and PAL video modes, all available user interface languages, and may use third party batteries.

For version 2 of the Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch, I've prepared a choice of two INI settings files that differ only in the settings for the MJPEG 30p modes:

* For use with standard lenses, the standard patch will produce two types of MJPEG videos:

HD mode: 1280x720 HD videos with peak bitrates up to around 60Mbps (in 4:2:2 color on the GF1).
VGA mode: 960x720 iPad-compatible videos, with peak bitrates up to 30Mbps.

* For use with anamorphic lenses, the anamorphic patch supports two different squeeze ratios:

HD mode: 1920x810 videos optimized for 1.33X anamorphic adapters, with peak bitrates up to around 60Mbps.
VGA mode: 1920x720 videos optimized for 2X anamorphic adapters, with peak bitrates up to around 50Mbps.]]>

Now that I've got an extra GF2 (also drewnet v6 installed), I want to combine footage of both the camera's. I'm thinking about using 720 25p on both camera's to do so (unless someone has a better idea). But I'm also in the middle of a bigger 1080 24p project on the GH2. When I change the GH2 from NTSC output to PAL, does this influence the 1080 24p footage in any way?

So the "ideal" or so-called "cinematic" shutter speed for video would be 1\60 or 1\50 but not 1\120 or 1\100? Thanks in advance for your answers. It's just so confusing - why have they made 60\50 fps recording while in fact it's just doubling the initial framerate without actually having an option for 1\2 slow motion?

All going well until yesterday night.

ISSUE DESCRIPTION: When switching on the GF2, within <1sec an error message appears "Schalten Sie die Kamera aus und und wieder ein" = "Switch camera off and on again".

WHAT I HAVE DONE SO FAR: I have switched the camera off/on multiple times. I have removed the (still fully loaded) battery. I have removed battery + SD card. I have removed the lens. I have tried with another lens. I have tried with another SD card. I have tried with another battery (fully loaded). Not successful. Still the very same error message comes up.

WHAT DOES WORK: The connection to the PC/Mac via USB still works, I can access the SD card.

SIDE NOTE: I wanted to change the firmware to the original GF2_V11.bin or any other; but the camera does not access at all the SD card allowing me to change the firmware. The error message comes up within <1sec.

QUESTIONS: => Is there any knowledge how to overcome this error message? => Is there any hidden trick like pressing a button when being switched on to factory reset the GF2?

Many thanks, Torsten

What does the My colour mode do when filming? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6496/what-does-the-my-colour-mode-do-when-filming Mon, 25 Mar 2013 08:23:02 +0000 KluddKalle 6496@/talks/discussions Hi!

I've searched for answers but came up with nothing, if there is an answer please point me in the right direction and close this thread. Forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong category.

I'm using the GF2 (hacked) for filming with old vintage lenses. I mainly use a Canon FD 50 mm 1,4 and a Canon FD 28 mm f2,8. When I try to shoot wide open the image gets all blown out (of course) and a ND-filter would help me with that. But when I shoot in any of the My colour modes the image is fine.

So what does the My colour mode (except the obvious effects) do that I can't do in manual mode? I know there's no manual controls when recording video so does it really matter what mode I shoot in? I'm thinking that the custom My colour mode (without changing any settings to the colour) is cheaper than a variable ND-filter, if the mode doesn't do something wierd with my video...

Panasonic GF2 video output during recording? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5372/panasonic-gf2-video-output-during-recording Tue, 04 Dec 2012 11:01:18 +0000 Igor_van_Airde 5372@/talks/discussions Hello,

I got a Panasonic GF2 and have some trouble with the analog video output. I want to use the output to preview video during recording. I already found that you can enable the live output by pressing Q.MENU for some seconds. This works fine for capturing stilts, but if you start recording a video, the output shows only black as long as you record the video. After stopping recording, you have normal output again.

I think this is just a firmware restriction that can be removed! Any suggestions?

And I really need the analog output all the time, because I want to operate the camera remotecontrolled and get the preview via an analog video transmitter.

I like very much old fast lenses like c-mount tamron 4-12 zooms, pentax 6-41, it would be great to use them (they're very cheap, you know) on GF2, however most of the demos I've found on the net are GH2-specific,and I don't know what are ETC drawbacks. A x3.2 could be too "extreme" in terms of video quality? It would be a good idea to use a c-mount 4-12 tamron f 1.0 on a GF2 x3.2 ETc (24-72mm!!) or video quality would be worse than a common kit lens panasonic 14-42 f3.5?

Hacked GH1, GF1, or GF2 for a student filmmaker? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5694/hacked-gh1-gf1-or-gf2-for-a-student-filmmaker Mon, 07 Jan 2013 10:57:06 +0000 IronFilm 5694@/talks/discussions Based on my research the GH2 offers by far the best bang for your buck in terms of video performance (although maybe the GH3 will take its place latter this year once its price has eased off a little), however for me even the GH2 is just outside my personal budget.

Currently I have an older Nikon DSLR which lacks video, as next month I'm starting a year long film course I have a need for a new camera which does video well (also will be using it for various personal projects too: short films, music videos, web series, etc.. and hopefully even a paying job or two).

It seems to me at first the obvious choice would be the previous model from the GH2 so thus get the GH1 secondhand on eBay, but the GF1 & GF2 also appear to be attractive options?

Made a comparison of what I know so far about GF1/GF2 vs GH1.

Pros:

a) does "comparable" video to the GH1 (I think it is the same? But struggling to find this out for sure)

b) goes for about half the price as the GH1 on eBay, which is a very compelling point for me at the moment (oddly the GF2 & GF1 are both going for about the same price on eBay??)

c) is exactly the same system and brand as the GH series, thus my future acquired knowledge/lenses/accessories will be very easily transferable when I get a GH2 or GH3 (or GH4? haha)

d) smaller bodies, for extra stealth should I wish for it as they're almost nearing compact size

e) the GF1 & GF2 are also hacked (thanks @Vitaliy_Kiselev! I'm amazed by how much you've contributed to this field)

f) the GF2 uses the same spare batteries as the GH2 (although I think the GF2 does not have the same degree of manual control in video as the GF1 has?)

Cons:

a) lacks a view finder

b) lacks an adjustable rear screen

Any extra advice or information about a hacked GH1 vs GF2 vs GF1 would be appreciated, thanks :-)

I am "studying" Ozu's films realized using only a 50mm; many people believe it's necessary to get a 25 mm on GH2 (due to crop factor) in order to emulate Ozu's look , however I've found this discussion on the net:

50 in academy ratio is actually what a 50 on a GH2 would give... Or almost. A GH2 is the same size as academy matted to 1.78:1 (so horizontally and DoF characteristics are the same, but different vertically). Speaking of which... Hitchcock used a 50 almost exclusively in the 50s and 60s, so a 50 on a GH2 is more or less identical to what you'd get in Psycho.

I feel a bit confused...should I get a 50mm or a 25 mm?

GF2 or G2 - please advise a newbie :) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2528/gf2-or-g2-please-advise-a-newbie- Thu, 08 Mar 2012 11:37:11 +0000 spk 2528@/talks/discussions I don't yet own a G-series camera, but I've enjoyed using friends' G1 and G2 cameras for shooting stills: I like the size & the mirrorless system & the results. For my next camera, I intend to get a G-series, but because I also want to use it for video, I won't get a G1. Having a touch screen is important for me, so I won't get a GF1.

My budget is too small for anything except a GF2 or G2. I am in the UK, so will probably be restricted to buying European models. If I buy a new G2, my friend who has an old G2 may be willing to swap it for my new one because he doesn't care about being able to hack his camera. If I get a GF2, I'd probably be on the lookout for a secondhand EVF or other compact solution (angled screen loupe?) to let me frame shots from angles that don't let me see the camera's back.

I hope to be able to do most of my work with the camera without having to own more than one compatible zoom lens (with stabilisation) and one compatible prime lens.

I care more about flexibility & convenience than about whether the camera gives 1080p/1080i. For instance: - ability to use 3rd party batteries - not having a video length limit - low light performance, especially in video mode - ability to get "film-like" video (other than by using low DOF & other such cinematographic techniques), e.g. anamorphic video. - manual control options - ease with which settings can be changed, including transition from video mode to stills mode and back again - ability to frame shots from above rather than behind the camera, using an inexpensive (<£100) add-on if necessary.

On each of these counts, how do the (hacked) GF2 and G2 compare?

I've googled extensively before asking the above, but I'm still uncertain. Please feel free to post relevant links instead of answering my question directly :)
