An exceptional price/quality ratio PC screen!

4 important specifications cached my attention:

  • IPS screen with wide viewing angle
  • 100% sRGB color gamut spectrum coverage
  • Flicker free
  • Blue light filter

Out of the box the screen came well calibrated, with a small Delta-E variation of color. After a manual calibration, it approaches perfection (except for the typical brighter black of IPS screens).

The "Flicker Free" and "Blue Light Filter" functions are very important for the eyes, especially for long working periods of time in front of the computer. I did not encounter problems related to ghosting or clouding, the image uniformity of my sample being impeccable. It doesn’t make much sense to comment much about IPS technology, whoever is interested in image editing, knows why to choose an IPS screen in favor of other technologies on the market.

The screen is elegant, with thin edges on the side and top and the construction is made of good quality plastic. The foot is made of metal and offers an inclination from -5 to 20 degrees.

In conclusion, for my needs (image editing) it’s an excellent screen at a very decent price. I recommend it with confidence!

Citrix Podio start paywall and lockdown of free accounts http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21160/citrix-podio-start-paywall-and-lockdown-of-free-accounts Wed, 19 Dec 2018 07:53:06 +0000 RoadsidePicnic 21160@/talks/discussions Project management and collaboration app Podio just announced they will place a paywall on free accounts starting January 3.

Formerly, the app had a limit on free "Organizations" of five people and some integration functionality.

The new paywall will put a limit of 500 "items" on free orgs across any workspace or module, after what the accounts will enter in edit only mode and effectively locked out of data in 30 days.

The rule will apply to new accounts from January 3 and existing accounts from January 19, as per email notice.

For anyone interested my experience is that Dfine is all around an excellent denoiser, newest topaz DN6 probably the best (also more time consuming) close followed by noiseware. Silvereffex is nice too, silkier than almighty tonality street dog. Sharpener Pro is also alright, mix (lighten and darken layers) to lessen effect, good clarity, you can configure it (well all of them) to go into new layer with mask (plink!) quick stuff. Color Effex has a ton of options and the legendary U-points (glub glub), useful if you invest some time, explore the myriad effects and combinations and end up creating some recipes, like sardines stuffed with mozzarella and heroin; used to be my post digi-darkroom, today's alien. Analog effex's also fun, for crazier moods. Skip Vivezza and specially HDR Effex, very bad. This suite used to be hundreds of petrodolars, probably google decided on dumping it (not cost effective) and thus the grandiloquence gest (prrrfff), enjoy =)

Mind you some things: when you save the image in standalone mode it will overwrite the original, so better make a copy beforehand. In Dfine the more manual noise's patches you select the better the results, BIG difference, it's also worth tweaking the advanced controls. Whenever I say u-point I mean control points, I'm used that way; these points behave a bit like add or/and subtract circular gradients' masks (with selectable ratio/size and transparency/power) but they also are very sensitive to where they're placed, a bit like a spot light (mimicking a 3D behaviour) within the confinement of a 2 space. When you save a recipe, U-points are not saved with it... basically there's no way of creating a U-point "memory". You can export your recipes and backed them up, shared them, etc. Also U-points behave differently depending on filter, e.g. in Pro-contrast the effect is not activated unless you create either "+" or "-" u-points. I found to be useful to mark the favourite effects (yellow star) so they're easier to locate. If there is something you'd like to apply to a video, you can save a recipe (as long as there are no vignetes, sharpening, etc. only luma and chroma tweaks without masks), convert Davinci's base trim_lut0.dpx to png or tif, apply your recipe and then create an timeline with the file and extract the grade's LUT in Resolve =)

41 free presets for PVs

Finally, attached are 41 presets - the ones managed to find - I created on CE long time ago; plus a couple charts for testing. You've got to understand that many of them were developed working on some specific look/batch/context/experience, plenty of times directly with unrefined (no time to cut baby's nails man?!!) base image, sometimes darker, sometimes brighter, more constrasty, more bland, etc. etc. Most if not all are meant to be used together with U-points, otherwise pretty useless; for instance I recurred a lot to the glow effect, but the reality was that more often than not with just u-points to very specific areas, as I mentioned before it's silly but there's no way to save those u-points. Hierarchy of effects' stack can also be changed and thus plenty more variations are possible.

To import the presets, see here - http://flypapertextures.com/installing-nik-presets/ - they'll live in /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/Google/Color\ Efex\ Pro\ 4/ImportedPresets folder on a mac. CE has a semi-hidden history tab too.

Mac free apps, tips and tricks http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11519/mac-free-apps-tips-and-tricks Wed, 08 Oct 2014 16:05:20 +0000 maxr 11519@/talks/discussions Hey pips =)

I put together some stuff that either workarounds some of mac OS problems/limitations or makes specific tasks easier.
Your most welcome to add your own

01 Afloat

I wanted DigitalColor Meter to remain on top of all windows as is very anoying to have to call for the app to see/copy values.
This is the solution I found: afloat • case you want to I attached SIMBIL 0.9.9 and this Afloat direct download link HERE should work. BIG thanks to Chris Van Patten

image

See in the screen grab below how DCM it is not active as safari was selected and yet it remains floating on top, like a good girl ;-)

image

It works with many (not all) applications including finder itself, below's another example
FYI with multi-window apps, i.e stickies, IF you decide to pin one window to the desktop, you'll have to circle through (finder then stickies) to then select window from the menu, be sure that the correct sticky is selected and then adjust effects, that'll make dialog desapear. Have a look at guide that comes with afloat installer as there are shortcuts for almost everything. The "Make this window an overlay" (clicks fall through) and "Make it opaque while I'm working with it" options are also useful

It is free, BIG BIG THANKS to Selur from here =)
It is very fast, resourceful (picture below shows its guts), multiformat ( x264, x265, Xvid, VP9, proRES / mov, mkv, mp4, avi, etc.), quite simple to use and navigate and yet it has almost all important options for audio and video conversion (including adding TC). Selur just updated the program today with, among many other improvements and tweaks, a max resolution of 16384x16384 so now you'ld be able to convert alexa 6.5K files :P

Now, if you like it and use it, maybe you could spare some change so the guy can buy flowers #1 to his girlfriend =)

If you are a dye hard freedom-to-the-flowers supporter, change that for condoms

FHD SOC frame grab fresh from today
image Hybrid to proRES422 (my own tweakings) FHD frame grab

Another 1:1 crop. SOC and passed through conversion only, absolutely no grade or other tweak outside hybrid and karl's ffmpeg downscale script!

A little stress workflow test with a mix of hybrid and Karl's 4k to FHD script conversions.
BTW I asked Selur - with @Karl 's permission and approval, thanks man! - if he would consider implementing Karl's script. He's probably thinking about it or writing poetry for his beloved one, you never know ,-)

Here's a general feature list:

New teleprompter software - beta invites (free) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17370/new-teleprompter-software-beta-invites-free Wed, 19 Jul 2017 09:41:01 +0000 easyprompter 17370@/talks/discussions Hey everyone, about 8 years ago, I launched EasyPrompter - an online teleprompter/autocue. What was first a DYI solution to the problem of "all the prompter software out there sucks" quickly became a very popular web-based teleprompter tool. It's been way over-due for an upgrade and I'm happy to tell you all that the upgrade is nearly ready.

There are a couple features I wanted to highlight as I think they're pretty great, especially on something you run in a web browser

  • Rich text editing
  • Mirroring (horizontal and vertical)
  • Dual-screen capable - this gives you the ability to have an operator and a talent screen
  • Configurable shortcuts (keyboard / control surface / presentation remote)
  • Save unlimited scripts in the cloud
  • Access on any device - web, tablet or smartphone
  • Fully offline capable - once you load it, you can run it in the field without an internet connection

These are just some and more features will come as more people tell me what they need. I want this to be the best web-based teleprompter solution out there and you can help make that happen!

You can sign up for the beta right now which will give you at least 90 days access to the full EasyPrompter Pro in exchange for your feedback.

You can sign up at https://www.easyprompter.com/beta

Thank you!

If you're like Vitaliy you'll probably have some sort of collection of scanned grain, flares, leaks, wipes, transitions, layers' skulls, effects and so on. Though not in every an each project, these resources, can be handy in some situations.

Projection Films has a nice set of these in FHD and 4K flavours. Many ( the ones in the folders) are FHD proRes. The files are licensed by Tim Clague under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0

It takes quite some time to download ALL of them. I left a 4.77GB zip file at mega ( use any browser but safari) case you don't want to go through the hassle. If you find them usefull consider donating to Tim >> http://projectorfilms.blogspot.pt/p/free-hd-downloads.html http://projectorfilms.blogspot.pt/p/free-4k-light-leaks.html

Music for free use http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2585/music-for-free-use Thu, 15 Mar 2012 05:49:34 +0000 liquidify 2585@/talks/discussions Not sure if this is a good category for this idea, but the concept is to create a place where musicians can offer recordings for free use in people's motion pictures.

I have many recorded songs that I would love for people to use. In addition, I am not opposed to writing and recording music specifically about a topic someone would request or specifically to suit a certain artistic feel. Most likely most people will simply post music here that people can apply to their movies as they see fit.

I would suggest that anyone who uses songs posted here should give credit to the artist, and that if the motion picture that uses these songs should happen to blow up and make a bunch of money, then there should be some reasonable expectation that a deal should be worked out between musician and movie maker.

I am also not clear as to what the best storage method should be for songs. Nearly all the songs I have recorded are in .wav format and would require a fair amount of space to store. It would also be nice to find a place to store .mp3's of the tracks so that people can listen to them and decide if they want to use the .wav.

Also, this topic can be used as a place to discuss best audio formats for motion picture. I almost feel like this should be a category because there are many sub topics I could see branch off.

Note 1. Bandcamp provides a HTML code that supposedly creates a player. The player does not seem to function on this site. Bandcamp does allow for high quality .wav storage and download, and allows you to set it up so that people can download for free, or name what they want to pay which includes 0.

Thanks to @czarek for heads up on this "thing" called Natron.
Actually in version 1.2.1 and beta v2, it comes bundled with lots of useful plugins and features and there's some more you can throw in for free, like the TuttleOFXs. If you're doing frequent or/and complex composite work and want a FREE node based workflow solution, check this baby out, it's a clone of Nuke... for more adventurous, less purchasing power people with loads of work :P

It is not by any means my "area", so other people can take over the thread and give better and knowledgeable answers and advice.
I can only say that I'm really enjoying the experience, cheers =)

So Assimilate has released this free player called Scratch Play for both PC and mac and I must say it is really a mighty and useful one.

FORMATS natively supported

and PLAYBACK

AUDIO abilities

COLOR, now here's where starts to shine

MONITORING

and best for last EXPORT

Cutting long tables short, or not, you can watch (and listen) footage of almost everything, with metadata and SCOPES, LUTs and whatnot. You can compare between 2 clips, same clip at different time, sizes, with different colour settings/grades applied, different color spaces, LUTs, source mode mapping (Lin to Log, viceversa and Lin/sRGB, Log/Filmm Rec 709, Wide Gamut, etc. you can even load yours), 8, 10 and 16 bitdeph, different frame rate/speed (from 0.1 to 199), with different frame size or aspect, offset, with guidelines (2:35, 1:85, etc.), crop marks, color full range and gamma, timecode and 3D baby jesus snorting coke LUT if that's your thing. Here's another cool feature: you can export your LUTs. You can visualize RGB channels plus luminance or alpha only. It supports dual monitoring, makes fullscreen either in single or compare clip mode, you can completely fade borders, guides, etc. Scopes can be transparent or solid, has dedicate snapshot button, a magnifier... for sorting buggers :P and pressing tab (on mac) hides panels.

Now the "drawbacks" it is free with little stupid adds, you'll need a fairly decent powerhourse for all-in smooth performance, you may, just may like it.

Free Urban/Industrial Textures in 16MP RAW http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3526/free-urbanindustrial-textures-in-16mp-raw Sat, 09 Jun 2012 18:03:25 +0000 Pechente 3526@/talks/discussions I spent a bit of time photographing some textures and wanna share them. They're neither professionally recorded nor digitally further processed. So most of the stuff comes straight out of the camera. That's why I'm offering this both as JPG and RAW. Feel free to share it.

Below you can find some scaled down example shots of what you can expect from this collection:

DaVinci Resolve 8.1.1 Lite, DNxHD and GH-2 footage http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1492/davinci-resolve-8.1.1-lite-dnxhd-and-gh-2-footage Fri, 18 Nov 2011 21:05:56 +0000 disneytoy 1492@/talks/discussions As of yesterday the main handicaps of the lite version were the limit to 2 nodes. This prevented some very essential corrections requiring 3+ notes for tracking or power windows. But now Black Magic has lifted that limitation! So now unlimited nodes, great use of CUDA acceleration. More importantly for us Windows users, DNxHD codec use to require a $500 license. But now is FREE! The fact ProRes as a writing codec is not available to us PC users, the free Avid DNxHD codec becomes an excellent alternative.

With finalcut X loosing its luster with the current upgrade, and the highly touted Resolve coming to Windows, us PC users have much less reason for MAC envy. I do have a Mac I can try Resolve 8.1.1 on at the moment but that computer isn't part of my editing workflow.

Particularly in light of high bit-rate GOP1 hacks such as Driftwood, I'd like to hear back regarding other's workflows getting their MTS files through a Resolve grading and out. I've done some transcoding tests with 5DtoRGB which supports output in 3 flavors of DNxHD. I believe it writes a .mov file. I'm not sure but I think Resolve wants an Avid MXF wrapper. Maybe someone can report back on that. Also, any other workflows to bring our MTS files into Resolve.

For now I will leave a couple links to some good tutorials to get you started. The interface is a bit non-intuitive. But, if you follow along these should get you going.

I had so much fun with this! MIDI-mappable controls (as well as computer keyboard). Check it out:

"SooperLooper is a live looping sampler capable of immediate loop recording, overdubbing, multiplying, reversing and more. It allows for multiple simultaneous multi-channel loops limited only by your computer's available memory."

P.S. it's not me playing ;)
