I have been looking for an combo EVF/monitor. The SmallHD 502 and Sidefinder was the functionality I was hoping for, but the price had put me off. Then I stumbled upon the SpectraHD 4 which seems like a potential alternative. The current price is $717.69 (it was $706.29) new on ebay (or $749 from F&V/Adorama/Amazon) with the loupe - http://www.ebay.com/itm/371278169162?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Specifications:

4.3" LCD Display with 1280x720px Resolution with 170-degree Viewing Angle. HDMI to SDI Conversion. Waveform, Histogram, Vectorscope, False Color, Zebra Overlays, Pixel to Pixel, Focus Peaking, Frame Guides, Audio Meters, Timecode and DSLR Scale. 1/4"-20 and Arri Rosette Mounting Options. Multiple Power Options: Sony NP-F, DC2.5mm, Mini-XLR. Only thing that seems to be missing is a LUT.

Review:

This was $1299 announced at NAB 2014, so it seems like a great value at $749 or less...

Anyone using one of the these?

Thanks!

Mark

Today I get a video for the review with BMPCC and 3.5 inch EVF, new version to support BMPCC, HDMI input & output, with very

nice price.

The video is as below.

Is there anyone have this EVF? How about it working with BMPCC? Or someone have other monitors from this brand?? Thanks.

GH3 (GH4 too?) OEM eyecup http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9679/gh3-gh4-too-oem-eyecup Thu, 20 Feb 2014 22:19:24 +0000 debuys 9679@/talks/discussions I lost my GH3's EVF eyecup. I modified an aftermarket Hoodman Nikon D300 eyecup to fit and it's great but it obstructs the LCD's movement and extends above the hotshoe. I wanted to replace the original eyecup and had a hell of a time finding even just the part number on the web. I called Panasonic's warranty number and learned that the eyecup falling off would be covered under warranty. I was told to pack the camera up and send it in to a repair center where they would replace the eyecup. My only expense would be shipping it to them. I started a claim and got a case number but I asked to be transferred to the parts department. I wanted to see if I could find the part and compare the cost of shipping in my camera to buying a tiny part.

Panasonic USA's tech support, repair and parts department didn't have a diagram or an obvious part name to help me order the right part. I was patient and eventually I was put in contact with a manager who had worked in multiple departments and was familiar with the "DMC-GH3". She found the part number and took the order over the phone. It arrived in about 5 business days.

Since it was such an an unusual, inexplicably time consuming affair I thought I should share the information.

The part number is VYK6B43

The Panasonic USA parts telephone number is 1-800-833-9626. Other regions have a different number. It can also order via internet.

My cost including shipping was $16.75 US

GH2 Smudge in EVF. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13338/gh2-smudge-in-evf.- Tue, 07 Jul 2015 07:31:38 +0000 Italianshox 13338@/talks/discussions I picked up my GH2 today, I have had it for about a week. When looking inside the EVF, I saw a brown smudge. It is quite small ( covers about 50 pixels). At first I thought it was just on the outside, so I cleaned the glass. but that did not fix anything. As you can see in the image, the smudge is located in bottom right.

There is also a weird parallax effect with the smudge. Ie if the angle of the eye is not perfectly perpendicular to the glass, 2 smudges appear, 1 infront of the other (that is why there appear to be 2 smudges in the photo) .

How do i get rid of this? Is it a common problem?

Thanks for all of your help.

Eyecup for EVF. $5.40 only. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/194/eyecup-for-evf.-5.40-only. Wed, 08 Jun 2011 00:59:12 +0000 stoney 194@/talks/discussions eyecup. This looked... ghetto. Occasionally it pops up a bit on top as u can see on the 3rd picture. One finger to push it back. $5.40... what do u expect? I can see everything. No light leaking. LCD flips back and forth easily. No more nose grease all over on the back of LCD screen. It doesn't invalidate warranty. Hot shoe intact. But what if it breaks? Always have extra rubbers. What if there's no rubber? No worry. Back to EVF rabbit hole. That's all. Large eyecup is quite annoying for photography, but it's so nice for videography.

EVF for small shoulder-rig http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12209/evf-for-small-shoulder-rig Mon, 19 Jan 2015 12:42:16 +0000 Gamer_s 12209@/talks/discussions I'm building a small shoulder-rig for my GH4. As I want to have most of the weight on the shoulder, the built in LCD and EVF end up too far back to be used, so I need an EVF. Any input on what to look for and what to watch out for? The upcoming Zacuto OLED viewfinder looks nice, but makes little sense buying a viewfinder more expensive than the whole rest of the rig... So what other alternatives are there on the market and how do they compare?

thanks, Simon

It almost makes the EVF usable.

$50 (3G)HD-SDI to HDMI converter (quick review) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9245/50-3ghd-sdi-to-hdmi-converter-quick-review Thu, 02 Jan 2014 09:14:27 +0000 hempo22 9245@/talks/discussions Just thought I would give a quick "review" of an SDI to HDMI converter that just arrived. And by review I mean: List my equipment and say if it works or not with that combination. I couldn't find anything on this particular el cheapo one when scanning the forums so here we go!

It came without a box, just a padded envelope. The converter and the power supply was wrapped in plastic. The power had an american socket and and type f adapter (just what we use in Sweden). Input voltage is 5-12v.

According to the eBay seller I ordered from (and the manual that came with it) it said to support the following input/output resolutions:

  • 480i, 576i, 720p, 1080i @ 50/59,94/60
  • 1080p @ 23,98/24/25/29,97/30/50/59,94/60

On the BMCC 2.5K MFT + Zacuto EVF 1080i50/60 worked fine, so did 1080p25/29,97/30. 23,98 and 24p did not. I got "unsupported format" on the Zacuto display (latest firmware).

No big deal for me since I'm shooting 25p, but people who need an adapter and shoot 24p to use with their Zacutos, beware.

EDIT: 23.98 and 24p works on the converter. Hooked it up to my Samsung TV and sure enough, I get an image. Which is weird since the Zacuto manual states 1080p24. Time to contact them.

I can also add that audio passes trough and I get metering on the EVF.

For the money I'm not gonna complain and this will do till I can afford an Alphatron or whatever comes out this year that I will settle on. It's light and will stick easily on your rig with some velcro.

Idea of a new design for viewfinders/displayloupes... opinions? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8842/idea-of-a-new-design-for-viewfindersdisplayloupes...-opinions Thu, 21 Nov 2013 04:51:16 +0000 Illusionist_Films 8842@/talks/discussions What I've ever really been missing in present cameras is a proper viewfinder: I'm talking about the sort of angled viewfinder cameras like Aaton XTR or Arri Alexa are equipped with, where you're able to have the camera on one of your sides when looking through. The only thing nowadays digital cameras are most probably equipped with is a display. I know there are a lot of solutions like display loupes or EVF's, but I don't think any of them being comfortable. I don't like the idea of adding more bulk to the camera with an EVF, as you're not solely adding the EVF but also a proper mounting solution, powering and have the hdmi/sdi cables hanging around (not to mention that good EVF's are pretty expensive and most people already use a monitor which adds enough bulk and cables etc..). So go to the display loupe way? Well, I think most display loupes available are absolutely unflexible as you've to position the camera right in front of your eyes. That's neither convenient nor always possible, depending on tripod, rig or other accessories. The only design I liked was that of the Varavon Loupe EX for GH1/2 (even though i never owned one) as it used the flexibility of the flip- and rotateable display. But again the mobility of the viewfinder depended on the display. So what about cameras with a fixed display like BMPCC? I've come up with the idea for a fully rotateable display loupe using mirrors or prisms inside to work like a kind of magnificating periscope. As I don't have the manual abilities nor the knowledge to built something like this I thought I'd share my thoughts here. I've attached a rough schematic diagramm to visualize it. I know the market for this would be marginal but do you believe this to be useful? Probably theres something similar to this already existing and I just don't know it? I'd like to hear some opinions, suggestions... if someone has the mechanical skills to built this or wants to refine/improve the idea... feel free to do it ;)

Here is the review...

http://www.eoshd.com/content/3500/zacuto-evf-flip-review

In summary:

Image quality – superb resolution, accurate colour and smooth tonal range
Helps manual focus even when used as a monitor, good as small portable field monitor as well as EVF
Comes with an articulated Giottos ball-joint, so for DSLRs without an articulated screen (like the 5DMkII and 7D) it’s a big step up
Clearly visible live-view in really strong sunlight when used as an EVF
Can be offset on a shoulder rig in front of your eye, improving the balance of your rig
Lovely big eyecup and comfortable to use

Also now thanks to Vitaliy we can use ExTele mode via HDMI and have full monitoring for the first time with c-mount lenses in 1:1 crop mode!]]>
Does GH2 go to sleep when no displays are in use? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/590/does-gh2-go-to-sleep-when-no-displays-are-in-use Thu, 04 Aug 2011 20:01:00 +0000 jimtreats 590@/talks/discussions
Hard to know, to my knowledge the manual doesn't mention anything of the sort. It'd be a nice thing to have though, one step closer to that walk around all day with a dSLR switched on and no significant battery drain. But then again with their pentaprisms SLRs have it easy in this regard.
