Microphone for reference audio http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8245/microphone-for-reference-audio Thu, 26 Sep 2013 10:34:52 +0000 Mckinise 8245@/talks/discussions I will be booming sound and occasionally using lavaliers for my next project. I have a clapper board for syncing, but I also use plural eyes. I need a low noise microphone that will allow me to get strong reference audio. None of the scenes will be going over 4 minutes of continuous shooting. They will be a mixture of interior and exterior locations.

The microphone will be mounted on the camera rig/cage above the camera and plugged either directly into the camera or into a fiio pre-amp then the camera body. I am really hoping to avoid latency issues, so please keep that in mind. I am seeking microphone and cable suggestions as well as your preferred options for that setup.

Options:

  1. Microphone plugged into Camera
  2. Microphone plugged into Pre-amp then camera.
  3. External recorder (Zoom H1/Tascam DR-05) used as a line pass through.
  4. Your ideas.

Expose in the Zone - getting the best image for grading. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3773/expose-in-the-zone-getting-the-best-image-for-grading. Tue, 03 Jul 2012 21:45:46 +0000 shian 3773@/talks/discussions There isn't an "Education" category, but maybe there should be. I would have put this in there instead.

Many people following this thread - http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1937/finding-face-exposure-on-gh2#Item_51 - have heard me talk about the 4 stop (technically 5-stop) "Target Range" (or Target Zone) for DSLRs in which you should expose your scene to get clean images that grade exceptionally well with plenty of detail in the blacks and highlights.

But I've received so many questions about what exactly I mean by "the zone system" that I put this video together to demonstrate what I mean and why.

While I only touch very briefly on the actual Ansel Adams Zone System, which is way more complicated than explained herein, if you light and expose your scene using this "zone" technique, you'll never worry about macro-blocking, noisy blacks, or blown out highlights again.

...And you'll be able to grade the living hell out of the footage.

GH3 Cage http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7643/gh3-cage Wed, 31 Jul 2013 15:17:01 +0000 djhessler 7643@/talks/discussions Hey guys, I wanted to show you guys how the Wooden Cage works with the GH3, I did forget to point out 2 important features on the cage because I wont be using them, one is the fact that it comes with a small plate that can help prevent your camera from slipping if you use a follow focus and the 2nd one is that you can also use the hotshoe as another point to tighten or secure the camera. In this post http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7535/gh3-loose-hot-shoe-pictures#Item_1 I show the reason I had to get a cage, and how weak the GH3 hot shoe is, I hope this video helps someone else to make a decision on whether to get this cage or not. GH_2 PTools problem http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7594/gh_2-ptools-problem- Wed, 24 Jul 2013 18:35:00 +0000 tokyo187 7594@/talks/discussions I am new to this whole process. I have modded only on PC's, never camera's. I have downloaded PTools as prompted. I have also tried several different settings redshift_v4, moon, apocolypse now, just to see if I could get to work. ptools doesn't recognize any of the files for uploading. The only one it does recognize is the -V103 which is supposed to emulate the original firmware. Please help! I think the Sanity 5 patch I bought the GH2 with is corrupted, because In video mode it's stuck in automatic. I can't change the ISO, or anything. Very strange. I find the GH2's firmware rather shoddy to begin with. If there are any really good firmware updates that you would recommend after the ptools issue is fixed, I would very much appreciate that as well.

Thanks!!

The stage of DSLR cameras in the future http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6662/the-stage-of-dslr-cameras-in-the-future Wed, 10 Apr 2013 16:13:48 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 6662@/talks/discussions This thread isnt for talk or praise the quality of the Pocket Camera that are already well known and there are two thread of it, its for analyze and maybe a little speculate because I havent a crystal ball and dont know anyone who works within the industry film or camera makers to speak firmly of things to come.

Some time ago I've been thinking that one day they will see cameras with dreamy benefits available to our pockets and BMC has taken the first big step.

After impact caused by Pocket Camera at NAB seems as if all DSLR cameras literally stay in the past, the film market and videographic intermediate, semi-pro and professional low budget now has a gear of very low cost, then I wonder how that argument would have for example someone who wants today to buy a 5D MKIII about U$3000 for videos and films when for a third of the cost you have a body that offers RAW with 13 EVF of DR. Who less would suffer possibly are cameras under US$1,000 where the user amateur looking a camera for photo and with video to record the dog pacing on the garden, the family eating BBQ, an afternoon at the beach or something without more pretense, but I dont know if that market segment is sufficient for these traditional manufacturers.

I assume that traditional manufacturers must have a headache because they did not expect this movement. Anybody what will buy a camera for video a film low cost will prefer a DSLR digital -regardless the record format- to a camera to record in RAW?

BMC's movement beneficent the market because it will be forced to Sony, Panasonic, Canon and Nikon to compete with similar or better gear features, that or leave the market for inematographers and filmakers low budget because they havent argument to compete equal now.

PS, sorry for my poor english.

FS: Fostex DC-R302 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6866/fs-fostex-dc-r302 Wed, 01 May 2013 17:53:43 +0000 MattRobertson7 6866@/talks/discussions Selling my Fostex DC-R302 audio mixer/recorder. Simply the best DSLR audio solution in my mind. 3channel XLR 48v phantom powered, with GREAT preamps (the best i've heard of any recorder in this class), records to SD cards, uses AA batteries (so if you run out of charge you can just pop em out in the middle of a shoot with fresh batteries), and has all the features you could possibly need.

I used this when I had my Gh2, but have moved to a Canon C100 these days, so don't have much of a need for it. I am tempted to keep it and feed the signal into the c100 when recording audio, but i would rather have the cash free. The preamps on this are definitely better than the c100 ones.

I am selling for $785+15 shipping to CONUS/Canada. I can ship international, but please contact me beforehand so I can get a quote of how much shipping would be.

There is a fair amount of wear on the unit, the finish seems to chip fairly easily, but it is made out of a really solid metal type finish, not plastic like a zoom h4n, so this thing can take a serious beating and never flinch.

Everything is fully functional, and works like a charm. Here are some pictures of the unit:

EDIT: Also, I have 100% ratings on eBay you can find my feedback at mattrobertson7

Problem with TASCAM DR-100 work with 5D2 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5370/problem-with-tascam-dr-100-work-with-5d2 Tue, 04 Dec 2012 02:53:02 +0000 Shome 5370@/talks/discussions Before I ask my question, I did look into a lot post here. But still I found my problem it's like a bug in my 5D2.

I try to find a good solution for sound in my 5D, just for some normal interview( could be in the studio and any place clients are). Before I used HDV to get some sound, 5Dget image, and sync in post with pluraleyes. But I found a lot people do get better solution. Now I try to learn it.

So what I'm trying to do is just get the quality sound directly into my 5D2, without post work with pluraleyes. My buddies are: TASCAM DR-100, SONY UWP-V1(Radio mic),Audio Technica AT897, also got Rode NTG-1(but this one no AA power supply). 5D2(hacked with Magic Lantern 2.3)

First, I try sony radio mic directly plugin to 5D, it's reasonable sound for event interview stuff, but definite not really good quality, as 5D doesn't have good sound handling ability( I guess).

Then I get this TASCAM thing.(A lot people use H4n, i guess similar thing). Tascam has 2 XLR input, So I use sony radio mic and AT897 (both powered by themselves). My tascam get decent sound these two mic. I used tascam's 3.5 line output, send the sound to 5D's 3.5 mic input. monitor the 5D's sound through AV mount. (wiki ML says we will need a RCA-3.5 adapter, i didn't see that before so i just plugin my 3.5 headphone in to that AV end, it works, I did get the sound there, amazing! ) It worked for a while but I don't when it suddenly just can only get one track, only left channel, there is no infos came into right channel. No matter what i try on all the settings in the ML menu, I can't get that right channel back...

Can anyone help me figure this out?

Rig Recommendations http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4878/rig-recommendations Fri, 12 Oct 2012 20:19:59 +0000 Tyler_Bailey 4878@/talks/discussions I've been looking at a lot of rigs recently because a recent job has required me to upgrade from pulling focus from my barrel and going straight hand-held. My budget isn't low nor is it too high (something like $300-$500) and I want something that is sturdy and will last me a while. I'm not too concerned about a matte box but if it comes in a bundle, that's fine.

I'm looking for a sturdy and somewhat weighted shoulder rig with versatility in regards to being attached and removed quickly from a tripod and room for attaching other accessories such as a follow focus, on-board monitor and perhaps hdmi splitter or maybe a microphone on an articulating arm.

I've worked with Jag-35 and I'm almost tempted to get a field runner they have for almost $500 but maybe there's something better I can work with that is more sturdy and reliable.

I'm asking $400 for everything. I'll ship here in the U.S. at no charge but overseas I'd have to have that covered by the buyer. Seems these are still retailing for $500, so I feel this is a good deal.

VizTools reveals HandiZoom: Convert Canon DSLRs in a camcorder http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2852/viztools-reveals-handizoom-convert-canon-dslrs-in-a-camcorder Fri, 13 Apr 2012 09:49:25 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 2852@/talks/discussions But only for Canon. :(

Wanna shoot really serious video of the sidewalk on your DSLR, but can't get along with those dicey standard controls? Then maybe VizTools has a solution -- or at least a working prototype it's readying for NAB. The HandiZoom can be operated with only one hand and does motorized zoom with adjustable speed settings, as well as various other primary controls. It hooks up to compatible Canon DSLRs using USB and a rail system, with the aim of making the camera feel more like a traditional news shooter. Check out the video after the break, and then maybe throw down a few more pennies to pair it with one of these.

The rental house where I am interning just picked up a "Lockit Buddy", and I was just wondering if anyone else is using these or is aware of their capabilities. Its basically a small box that takes in timecode and sends that to your camera's audio track, essentially enabling proper dual-system timecode synched audio on DSLR type cameras that otherwise would not have timecode. OF course you must edit in a software that supports audio timecode, but the site lists Avid and FCP both as software that have this ability. I'll be testing this nifty little thing out in the near future, so I'll re port back when I've used it ia bit more, but I just thought it sounded like something very useful.
