Adobe? Black magic?

For the rest of the January 2015 there is 30% off sale in their online store, so if you are on a PC and need DNxHD or ProRes it could be a good time to buy...

There were problems with the version 1 of the codecs but at the moment I am running the version 2 of the codecs successfully.

Automated Avid, ProRes & LW format conversions - auto file renaming tools http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2486/automated-avid-prores-lw-format-conversions-auto-file-renaming-tools Sun, 04 Mar 2012 22:48:16 +0000 notrons 2486@/talks/discussions I'm looking for people who are interested in automated .mts file conversions to ProRes and Avid DNxHD 4:2:2 formats, or for import into Lightworks, to test my new DSLR Post Prep Utility Windows application. The program is designed to automate the process of creating either and or both HQ and proxy conversions on demand, automatically by watched folder, or can be scheduled for off-hours. It uses the ffmpeg engine for all of the conversions (which run in their own minimized windows). When in watched directory mode it can also be minimized to the system tray where it continues to provide notifications and watch for new files. The following conversions are currently supported;

HQ Formats - 4:2:2

Uncompressed 4:2:2 10bit (working with LW)
ProRes 4:2:2 YUV 10bit 176Mbs HQ
DNxHD 4:2:2 YUV 10bit 176Mbs HQ
MPEG4 Wrapper for Lightworks
MPEG-2 4:2:2 I-Frame w/ M701 tag (for Lightworks only)
MPEG-2 4:2:2 I-Frame (w/out M701 tag)

Proxy formats

ProRes 4:2:2 YUV 10bit 36Mbs
DNxHD 4:2:2 YUV 10bit 36Mbs 1080P 24
DNxHD 4:2:2 YUV 10bit 60Mbs 720P 24
DNxHD 4:2:2 YUV 10bit 145Mbs 720P 60
DNxHD 4:2:2 YUV 10bit 115Mbs 720P 50

DNxHD and ProRes HQ conversions seem nearly identical, but I think ProRes is a little better quality as a proxy format. DNxHD renders much faster than ProRes. I have a beefy workstation with Matrox hardware and it can handle all of the usable formats pretty easily but I would love to hear about how they work out for others. Please give it a try and let me know about the experience!

Check out http://hdcinematics.com/NewWeb/tools.html for more info. Also available are tools that add custom prefixes and timestamps to files on a directory-wide basis - to help keep clips uniquely named and organized (ExtensionCord). You might want to grab the Matrox and Avid codecs while you're there and download a copy of HD-MINI to audition clips on demand.

With this utility you can select a different flavor of HQ codec from proxy codec and have both conversions done automatically and off-hours. If you use ExtensionCord to add a prefix and (file creation) timestamp to your files before converting, you can edit with the proxies and then offline / link to the HQ clips of exactly the same name at render time.

I hope you can find some use for these ...; )

Cheers!

Premiere Pro CS6 reducing resolution of all exported video http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9353/premiere-pro-cs6-reducing-resolution-of-all-exported-video Wed, 15 Jan 2014 00:52:58 +0000 IVIaverick52 9353@/talks/discussions So this is the first I've seen this happen and I can't find any info online. Basically when I export a project in premiere I get severe aliasing and overall reduced resolution, no matter what setting. Exporting 1080p in MP4, DNxHD, uncompressed AVI all give the same results, resolution that's closer to 720p than 1080p. The odd thing is I've compared the out of camera MTS files (and even the DNxHD converted files used in the project) to the outputted files from Premiere, and they look totally normal. I'm using a GH2 with Drewnet T9 and it's been great but this is really stumping me.

My current workflow is: MTS files into AE > converted to 2.33 aspect ratio (1920x824) DNxHD format > footage imported and edited within Premiere Pro > exported as 175 bit DNxHD 1920x1080 master file. Note that the 2.33 conversion is strictly letterboxing via composition settings in AE and not altering the pixel dimensions (as those 1920x824 files don't show the pixilation).

One thing I noticed was that when I expand the video feed in Premiere it shows the pixilation that's outputted in the final format, but I wrote that off as simply being reduced resolution for real time playback that wouldn't translate to the final video. Also the preview remains pixilated even with no effects applied (only effects on clips are quick color corrector, Neat Video, and shadows/highlights).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I've included a still of the 175 bit DNxHD final video, and a matching frame of the original MTS file straight from the camera. Ignore the top and bottom margins, but look at the high contrast lines like on the Marshal logo, and the metal frame of the B-52 amp below it.

Edit: Rewrap DNxHD MXF files to Quicktime files solved via firmware update. New problem now tho. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2216/edit-rewrap-dnxhd-mxf-files-to-quicktime-files-solved-via-firmware-update.-new-problem-now-tho. Tue, 07 Feb 2012 14:20:19 +0000 Brian202020 2216@/talks/discussions The new Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 records DNxHD files in the MXF wrapper. These files can only be read by Avid's NLE. If these file could be rewrapped into a quicktime wrapper then other NLE's would be able to read the files. Many people on many forums are trying to find a solution to this. I want to start this thread here to get more people joining the cause. The Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 is a great buy at an amazing price, and if we could get the files rewrapped or transcoded cheaply it would be huge.

Has anyone done this successfully? Or at least have any good idea's on how to do this?

Using ffmbc (FFmpeg for broadcast) for AVCHD rewrapping & conversion http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2169/using-ffmbc-ffmpeg-for-broadcast-for-avchd-rewrapping-conversion Wed, 01 Feb 2012 18:58:05 +0000 Nityananda_SCSMath 2169@/talks/discussions Hi. I am on a mac and I want to rewrap my spaned .MTS files into single .mov files, and sometimes I want to convert my .mts files into DNxHD and Prores. I have different issues with Clipwrap and 5DtoRGB and want to use ffmbc (FFmpeg designed for video broadcast users) but I have to admit I find the installation and use confusing.

Can somebody please post here how to download, configure, compile, and use within the terminal ffmbc to rewrap MTS files and convert to Prores/DNxHD? I am personally interested in Mac OS X but others may need this for windows also.

Thanks so much!!!

Hyperdeck shuttle 2 problem. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3027/hyperdeck-shuttle-2-problem. Fri, 27 Apr 2012 04:37:08 +0000 robbin 3027@/talks/discussions Hi all. Anyone here who have the hyperdeck shuttle 1 or 2 and are on a pc with window? I cant get the damned files to playback on my computer. Tried uncompressed and dnxhd mov files. If i export a gh2 clip to dnxhd i can play it back fine but the files of the shuttle i can not. When i connect the shuttle directly to monitor the files play back fine. Must be some install problem in windows and quicktime.

Render time, response time...some findings (Cineform, Avid, mts) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2511/render-time-response-time...some-findings-cineform-avid-mts Tue, 06 Mar 2012 21:28:27 +0000 JackBayer 2511@/talks/discussions Hey,

today I´ve tried some different codecs after I downloaded hdcinematics' DSLR Post Prep Utility and here are my findings among Cineform HD (which I normaly convert to), Avid DNxHD and just mts. I usually transcode to CF, because Premiere Pro has a hard time to decode avchd on the fly, when it´s getting serious (multiple streams...).

In Premiere Pro the response time to dragging the time indicator along the timeline was worlds better in both CFHD and DNxHD. Between the latter two I couldn´t really make out great differences here.

So I went into After Effects to check the same thing there. Here I got no mentionable timely difference in response time to my wild dragging of the current time indicator. Even the mts performed equally, compared to CFHD and Avid.

BUT: The adpative resolution came down to 1/4 on both CFHD and mts. On DNxHD it stayed on full and then eventually came down to 1/2 while maintaining a great response time. I didn´t expect that.

Tomorrow I will redo my rendering tests, my preliminary results just don´t make sense right now.

DaVinci Resolve 8.1.1 Lite, DNxHD and GH-2 footage http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1492/davinci-resolve-8.1.1-lite-dnxhd-and-gh-2-footage Fri, 18 Nov 2011 21:05:56 +0000 disneytoy 1492@/talks/discussions As of yesterday the main handicaps of the lite version were the limit to 2 nodes. This prevented some very essential corrections requiring 3+ notes for tracking or power windows. But now Black Magic has lifted that limitation! So now unlimited nodes, great use of CUDA acceleration. More importantly for us Windows users, DNxHD codec use to require a $500 license. But now is FREE! The fact ProRes as a writing codec is not available to us PC users, the free Avid DNxHD codec becomes an excellent alternative.

With finalcut X loosing its luster with the current upgrade, and the highly touted Resolve coming to Windows, us PC users have much less reason for MAC envy. I do have a Mac I can try Resolve 8.1.1 on at the moment but that computer isn't part of my editing workflow.

Particularly in light of high bit-rate GOP1 hacks such as Driftwood, I'd like to hear back regarding other's workflows getting their MTS files through a Resolve grading and out. I've done some transcoding tests with 5DtoRGB which supports output in 3 flavors of DNxHD. I believe it writes a .mov file. I'm not sure but I think Resolve wants an Avid MXF wrapper. Maybe someone can report back on that. Also, any other workflows to bring our MTS files into Resolve.

For now I will leave a couple links to some good tutorials to get you started. The interface is a bit non-intuitive. But, if you follow along these should get you going.

Editing Codec : Prores/DNxHD/Aquamotion/seaQuake/etc. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2098/editing-codec-proresdnxhdaquamotionseaquakeetc. Tue, 24 Jan 2012 00:35:40 +0000 Nityananda_SCSMath 2098@/talks/discussions I would like this thread to be a discussion of what is the appropriate required "flavor" or bitrate of an editing codec for a certain hack.

For instance, I am recording using the 100Mbps Aquamotion v2 hack, and I want to transcode to normal Prores 422, which is about 115Mbps for 1080p24. I don't want to transcode to HQ (220Mbps) or 4444 (330Mbps) if I don't have to. But am I losing quality? How much? I would rather have my file sizes be nearly half and have 98% of the quality of the hack, but I wouldn't make that sacrifice if I'm only getting 70% of the hack's capable quality. So some input from those who are more knowledgeable would be good.

Is this correct?

Aquamotion v2 100Mbps -> Appropriate Editing Codec -> Prores 422 or DNxHD 145

seaQuake 176mbs -> Appropriate Editing Codec -> Prores 422 HQ or DNxHD 220

Of course this thread should be an open discussion of different hacks and editing codecs not just relevant to me as the "Original Poster," I'm just starting things off.

-Chris
