i currently own a macbook pro 15" 2011 edition with: 2.2ghz i7 , 4gb 1333 ddr3 ram , AMD radeon 6750m 512mb graphics card, 500GB TOSHIBA MK5065GSXF sata hard drive.

how can i speed this system up? i am looking at getting 16gb of ram (which this series of macbook pro accepts) and a solid state hard drive of some sort with fast read write speeds i presume?

is there anything i can do on the graphics card front to speed up programs like premier , speed grade, after effects and davinci resolve lite? (i know i cant change mine as its solderd in but can i plug an external one into my system?

also my max resolution on this screen is 1440x900 - not large enough for davinci can someone tell me if there is a way to get an external moniter running from my macbook with high enough resolution to work on davinci? how do i do this?

im running lion 10.7.5 by the way.

ps sorry vitally i know this thread is a bit of a mess , but i simply do not understand computers enough to be able to find the information i need.

thanks in advance everyone

Online free training source, and some other questions? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6193/online-free-training-source-and-some-other-questions Wed, 20 Feb 2013 12:26:20 +0000 TravisBickle 6193@/talks/discussions I am looking for a good free online tutorials for color grading, because the most I saw were made by people who juste crush the blacks and make the yellowish highlights and blue shadows - trying to imitate Transformers? Are there any quality tutorials guides on this subject?

Also do you think that one should start with a simple color grading tool like Magic bullet Colorista/Looks or Color Finesse or move directly to more advance stuff like DaVinci Resolve. Also i heard some criticizm of Adobe Speedgrade, what is your take on that?

Do you need well lit scenes for color grading or can you grade scenes that are lit using only the sun?

8bit color nonsense http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5439/8bit-color-nonsense Mon, 10 Dec 2012 12:40:59 +0000 shian 5439@/talks/discussions Per the discussion that started in the GH3 thread: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/comment/101069#Comment_101069

Where it was stated that shooting flat in 8bit was a terrible idea, and the nonsense we've heard over and over that you can't bring that color back, which everyone who has seen my work knows is just not true.

While it is true you cannot magically turn 8 bit color into 32bit color. Working in a 32bit environment does allow your corrections to enhance your footage rather than deteriorate your footage.

@FilmingArt FCP X, Premiere Pro CS6, Vegas Pro 12, Smoke 2013, are all 32bit

Just go to my vimeo channel to see tons of video's shot using this method on 8bit cameras https://vimeo.com/channels/shianstorm

And then check these threads for why you are catastrophically wrong about "noise and all kinds of other problems." And welcome to the discussion.

Johan Reinhold - Tears From The Start (Music Video made entirely on GH2) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5049/-johan-reinhold-tears-from-the-start-music-video-made-entirely-on-gh2 Wed, 31 Oct 2012 05:47:36 +0000 davidhjlindberg 5049@/talks/discussions Hi creative people!

Warner Music just released my latest music video and I am very proud to mention that I was able to shoot on Red Scarlet but chosen GH2 instead. Some may say I'm stupid but I wanted to show them what a cinematic result that little beast can give us.

Shot with Panasonic GH2, Sedna AQ1 & Apocalypse BOOM (Smooth -2-2-2-2) and Zeiss 50mm 1.8 Shot, directed, edited and graded by me.

Completely edited in Smoke 2012 and graded in DaVinci Resolve 9.

Ultrastudio Express vs Ultrastudio 3d http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4565/ultrastudio-express-vs-ultrastudio-3d Thu, 13 Sep 2012 06:02:07 +0000 mlysbakken 4565@/talks/discussions Does anyone know if there is any major difference between Ultrastudio Express and Ultrastudio 3d, apart from 3d-playback and 4:4:4 capture? I know Ultrastudio 3d makes it possible for a MacBook Pro to perform smoothly with DaVinci Resolve (so that you can grade on the fly), but I haven't found any information regarding the limits of the Ultrastudio Express. Does it boost the real time performance of your NLE's and grading software, or does it just capture and play back?

What should i use to transcode the footage to something that will work with da vinci like quicktime or prores without losing quality?

Thanks

The Final Dance - Touches of Color (2012) - GH2 short film http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3788/the-final-dance-touches-of-color-2012-gh2-short-film Thu, 05 Jul 2012 07:54:32 +0000 davidhjlindberg 3788@/talks/discussions Hi people,

I wanted to share this film with you to get some real critics from you. I'm active on a Swedish forum already and usually put my films over there to get some feedback but I wanted to hear your opinions as well.

The film is a school project I had, and I wanted to make a short film where I could really show my color grading. So even though I directed, edited and made the vfx in this video, I did it almost only to show my grading skills to then have something to show post companies as a portfolio after my graduation, which was a few weeks ago.

What do you think is good, what can I've been doing better?

I was using GH2, Orion v4b, Nostalgic (-2-2-2-2). Lens was Samyang 35mm 1.4.

Software used was After Effects CS5.5, Premiere Pro CS5.5, Twixtor, DaVinci Resolve. Converted all my files to Cineform .MOV before editing.

DaVinci Resolve 8.1.1 Lite, DNxHD and GH-2 footage http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1492/davinci-resolve-8.1.1-lite-dnxhd-and-gh-2-footage Fri, 18 Nov 2011 21:05:56 +0000 disneytoy 1492@/talks/discussions As of yesterday the main handicaps of the lite version were the limit to 2 nodes. This prevented some very essential corrections requiring 3+ notes for tracking or power windows. But now Black Magic has lifted that limitation! So now unlimited nodes, great use of CUDA acceleration. More importantly for us Windows users, DNxHD codec use to require a $500 license. But now is FREE! The fact ProRes as a writing codec is not available to us PC users, the free Avid DNxHD codec becomes an excellent alternative.

With finalcut X loosing its luster with the current upgrade, and the highly touted Resolve coming to Windows, us PC users have much less reason for MAC envy. I do have a Mac I can try Resolve 8.1.1 on at the moment but that computer isn't part of my editing workflow.

Particularly in light of high bit-rate GOP1 hacks such as Driftwood, I'd like to hear back regarding other's workflows getting their MTS files through a Resolve grading and out. I've done some transcoding tests with 5DtoRGB which supports output in 3 flavors of DNxHD. I believe it writes a .mov file. I'm not sure but I think Resolve wants an Avid MXF wrapper. Maybe someone can report back on that. Also, any other workflows to bring our MTS files into Resolve.

For now I will leave a couple links to some good tutorials to get you started. The interface is a bit non-intuitive. But, if you follow along these should get you going.

    Donwnload here:
    http://blackmagic-design.com/support/detail/?sid=3948&pid=11735&os=mac&leg=0

The problem is it doesn´t run on every mac and it´s design for big monitors however if you wish to install it on a 15" go to your terminal and write this:

    defaults write com.blackmagic-design.davinci.Resolve AppleDisplayScaleFactor 0.75

that will launch the aplication 75% smaller, you can change the porcentage to whatever.

    to undo:

    defaults write com.blackmagic-design.davinci.Resolve AppleDisplayScaleFactor 1

    enjoy.
ps. on my new MBP 13" it crashes for not having a propper grafic card. Those apple guy are to blame.]]>
