The high speed zooms look very interesting. I am curious for the pricing

PR

The SIGMA CORPORATION is pleased to announce that it will enter into the cinema lens market with the release of its SIGMA CINE LENSES, designed specifically for cinematography. In the world of digital film production, there is an increasing demand for higher resolution, and SIGMA’s new lineup of high-performance lenses is compatible with the latest, high-resolution digital cinema cameras. SIGMA has developed its own production system by establishing the required technology for mass production of high-performance lenses for ultra-mega-pixel shooting. The company feels this valuable new lens line could create a fundamental change in digital film production, and provide a new solution for cinematographers.

  • Unbeatable value – the highest optical performance in its class and outstanding compact design
  • Wide range of lenses for professional use
  • Optimized for the latest digital moviemaking technology

For the first phase, SIGMA will release two zoom lenses in Japan and the USA for EF and E mount camera systems. Furthermore, another zoom lens and five prime lenses will be released to the market in sequence from 2017 onward. SIGMA plans to develop additional zoom and prime lenses as well as add support for PL mount camera systems. The latest release information will be sequentially updated on its official website.

High Speed Zoom Line

High Speed Zoom Line offers the constant aperture of T2 throughout the zoom range, and the optical performance is ready for high-resolution shooting such as 6K - 8K. Furthermore, while offering the highest image quality in its class, the High Speed Zoom Line has a compact construction and offers amazing value.

FF Zoom Line

FF Zoom Line is compatible with a full-frame image circle, and the optical performance is ready for high-resolution shooting such as 6K - 8K. It provides a rare option for cinematographers since very few lenses can cater to the requirements of the latest digital cinema cameras' image sensor, which is larger than Super 35, and expand the range of compatible cameras. This is the cinema zoom lens offering the highest image quality and compact design. This lens is not available in PL mount.

FF High Speed Prime Line

The lineup ranges from 20mm to 85mm, and all five lenses are T1.5. They are compatible with full-frame sensors and, while being more compact, can offer superior resolution than other high-end prime sets do. With the five prime lenses from FF High Speed Prime Line, there is no need to change the lighting to shoot a variety of cuts. These lenses bring a consistent level of light to the production and offer greater consistency with regards to the film’s look and color/contrast before it enters post-production.

Each CINE lens model is weatherproof and has luminous paint markings to aid in changing and operating the lens in the dark. It touts a long focus rotation of 180 degrees and is guided by cams for smooth operation and accuracy. The CINE lens design features standardized essentials such as an 82mm front for ND filters* and a 95mm front diameter for matte box use and standard gear positions for accessories like follow focus. They also include a manual linear iris control and electronic mounts that provide vital camera metadata. Each lens is manufactured and inspected in the Sigma factory located in Aizu, Japan.

Availability/Pricing

Availability: toward the end of 2016 (in Japan and USA in the first phase)
Pricing: TBD

Interesting rare and unknown cinematography movies http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7041/interesting-rare-and-unknown-cinematography-movies Wed, 22 May 2013 15:24:59 +0000 lolo 7041@/talks/discussions I have just seen this movie:

Tony Takitani http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420260/

And i was mind blown about how coherent the cinematography was to the drama at hand, everything makes sense, quite a sad story and with an open ending, so perhaps not really appealing to a mass audience, but it has a beautiful cinematography, that proyects what the main characters feels really well, It is alo interesting for the budget filmmakers, as the style is really minimalistic and yet interesting.

Does anyone has other cinematography jewls, that are not really well known?

Steve Yedlin ASC (Last Jedi DoP) - On Resolution and Colour Science http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18555/steve-yedlin-asc-last-jedi-dop-on-resolution-and-colour-science Fri, 22 Dec 2017 12:06:20 +0000 Bernie 18555@/talks/discussions Here is a rich source of information on camera imaging and the importance of the pipeline from Camera to Display . The site belongs to Steve Yedlin, ASC cinematographer who recently shot Star Wars - The Last Jedi. This is a cinematographer with much more access to resources than the average videographer, but the principles he's trying to establish are important and relevant.

He has rigorously compared film and digital acquisition. The results have allowed him to choose the aesthetic properties of digital output and in doing so he dispels common assumptions regarding the superiority of one format over another, that leads to misplaced faith in brand allegiance and marketing in the camera industry.

Here are two videos where he compares formats and then goes into the details of his processing pipeline , before any traditional 'colour grading' is done: http://yedlin.net/ResDemo/#

What are the advantages of young cinematographers today? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16174/what-are-the-advantages-of-young-cinematographers-today Tue, 13 Dec 2016 10:10:31 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 16174@/talks/discussions Article in http://www.diyphotography.net/advantages-young-cinematographers-today/

We can argue whether it’s easier or harder for the young cinematographers today to display their work to the wide audience. No matter which point of view each of us takes, we can agree over one thing – it’s definitely very different today than it was 20 or 30 years ago. In a video by Cooke OpticsTV, some of the world’s most renowned cinematographers discuss the advantages and disadvantages of being a young cinematographer today.

Cooke Optics interviewed Paul Cameron (Westworld, Collateral), Roberto Schaefer (The Kite Runner, Monster’s Ball), Michael Seresin (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Angela’s Ashes) and Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire, Snowden), asking them about the opportunities and drawbacks young cinematographers have today. Considering that they have been in the industry for several decades, it’s very interesting to hear their opinions.

ADVANTAGES

  • You’re young: according to Paul Cameron, the advantage of being young is simply that – you’re young. I believe this means you simply have more energy to make an effort to rise to the top and succeed.

  • Editing tools are more available: another advantage young cinematographers have today is that everything is available. You can make a 4K video directly on your cell phone, transfer it to the computer immediately and do all the necessary editing right after the shooting. A few years ago, Nokia even ran a competition for short movies made by cell phones.

  • Video equipment is more available: the choice of the equipment is also much larger today, and video recording devices are simply available to more people. This means that it’s easier for those with an idea to create something and share it with the world.

  • It’s easier to reach people: if you are cinematographer today, it’s much more probable that you’ll get the message out than it used to be. Even if you don’t reach the wider audience straight away, there are so many channels you can use to display your work, reach people and gain audience. This is one more thing veteran cinematographers didn’t have.

DISADVANTAGES

The main disadvantage is in a way connected to the advantages, and it’s the matter of availability: availability increases competition. While the availability of video equipment and editing tools can be a good thing, at the same time, it can also be a disadvantage. Wider availability means more people can and want to be cinematographers. As Roberto Schaefer points out, everyone thinks they are a cinematographer (photographers, does this sound familiar?). This means that the competition is much bigger, and it may be more difficult to get attention, showcase your work to a wider audience and achieve success.

At the end, the interviewed videographers advise the young ones to work, to study from the professionals and from their own experience, and to do their best. As Paul Cameron suggests – good cinematographers do rise to the top.

Interview shots in documentaries http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15906/interview-shots-in-documentaries Wed, 19 Oct 2016 01:39:04 +0000 inqb8tr 15906@/talks/discussions For people that frequently shoot this kind of footage, it could be useful to share interesting interview shots from documentaries in this topic, discuss them and get inspiration and ideas for our work. Something like a reference database.

Interesting in terms of lighting, composition, and general cinematographic approach - how does it relate to the story, characters, atmosphere

Let me start with some random examples,

Man on Wire (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1155592/

Interview with the main guy in the film is done in very minimalistic way. He emerges from the darkness, just like his story unravels from his memory, presented in very suspenseful manner.

X-ray Audio

This is very good documentary about production and distribution of 'prohibited' records cut onto x-ray sheets in USSR times. Really interesting topic and characters. The film features interviews with people who were involved in that seemingly crazy actions back in the days. Interviews show their passion and determination despite the danger they put themselves into. But they are also very funny and original characters:

This man surrounded with bunch of items that directly correlate to his story:

Or this guy filmed on location that bring us to the atmosphere of back alleys where 'trades' usually took place. I particularly like the light setup of this one:

Just few examples for now, but hopefully this can grow.

The art of shooting on wide lenses: Lubezki http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12533/the-art-of-shooting-on-wide-lenses-lubezki- Thu, 05 Mar 2015 06:43:19 +0000 AlbertZ 12533@/talks/discussions I've found this essay on cinematographydb.com on the cinematography by Lubezki in Birdman. Lubezki, who is famous for his work with Terrence Malick, here uses essentially two primes throughout the film: a 12mm and 16mm on the Alexa (which are 18mm and 24mm on full frame, very very wide). I was impressed with how natural is the look: Lubezki's style is never "highly stylized", despite of the extreme wide angles. The article is rich of BTS, really glad to share it :) http://www.cinematographydb.com/2014/11/cinematography-birdman-emmanuel-lubezki-asc/

This music video was shot with a Sony Fs700 and Samyang lenses.

Check the shots at night, they were all made at 50 fps, without help of any speedbooster, just the combination of the Samyang lenses and the right exposure.

We had no help of any kind of light equipment, because we didn't have the budget... just the street lights. For those who are thinking to buy this camera, I can just say that the Sony Fs700 is really a good deal for what it can deliver. See for yourself. And the grain... was put on purpose on post-production to have that dirty effect.

Philomena' the movie, DP'd by Robbie Ryan= Beautifully shot! http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10004/philomena-the-movie-dpd-by-robbie-ryan-beautifully-shot Sun, 30 Mar 2014 11:11:42 +0000 maranfilms 10004@/talks/discussions Went yesterday to watch this film, I loved the cinematography. I only wish more movies were shot this way. There was no CGI, or ridiculous un-motivated shots to stimulate the dumbed down unappreciative masses. Nope, just good old cinema at it's best, where shot composition, natural lighting, and film stock are used as a tool to tell the story and create a feel unmatched by silly computer generated effects, even though the majority of the film was shot on the Arri Alexa. However, when the s16 made it's appearance, it worked wonderfully well to convey time change and a feeling of saddened loneliness. The acting was also fantastically convincing, there's no silicone injected duck lip plastic people with bleached white Chiclet teeth and a side of Botox, really, It didn't need the Hollywood glamour and all the façade that goes with. The acting, cinematography and script was more than adequate to tell this story. My only critique was the scoring, don't get me wrong, it's not that it was bad, I just feel it didn't convey as much emotion as it could have, of course it's subjective and being that I'm life long musician, I tend to be somewhat critical. Others may disagree. In closing, If you want to kill a couple hrs. and gorge yourself with some cinematic eye candy, it's well worth the price of admission and a box of popcorn.

As script is a bit difficult especially at the end and possibly left over footage, while seemingly a mixture of drama and road movie conventional. It is a very intimate film, very slow with many long still shots, but in a plastic stunningly beautiful, I love the night shots in it, are a delight to behold.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan is the director of it, while cinematography is by Gökhan Tiryaki. It was shot with a Sony F35. Winner of Cannes 2011.

I've never seen any lens produce such a weird "semi-triangular" bokeh. I've seen "Round" bokeh (Canon, Minolta etc), Hexagonal (Nikon), but not this weirdly appealing triangular pattern. Does anybody know which lenses Scorsese used for Taxi Driver?

My cinematography showreel (a lot of GH2 stuff in there). http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2240/my-cinematography-showreel-a-lot-of-gh2-stuff-in-there. Fri, 10 Feb 2012 10:33:30 +0000 Gabel 2240@/talks/discussions I hope I don't get warned for blatant self-advertising, but I just wanted to share my shoowreel here, there's some GH2 stuff in there (some of it hacked, one shot in the HBR mode). Here's a breakdown: First shot, done with HBR mode and Lomo OCT-19 primes 0:26 Driftwood GOP-3 with Nikon AI primes

0:37 HBR with Lomos

0:48 Cbrandin 66mbit with Lomos

0:56 HBR with Lomos

01:02 Cbrandin 66mbit with Lomos

01:03 Driftwood GOP-3 with Nikon AIs

01:11 HBR with Lomos

01:18 Stock AVCHD with Nikon AIs

01:37 Driftwood GOP-3 with Nikon AIs

01:40 Cbrandin 66mbit with Lomos

01:42 HBR with Lomos

01:55 Driftwood GOP-3 with Nikon AIs

02:04 HBR with Lomos

02:14 HBR with Lomos

(sorry for the double spacing, but otherwise it would all just fall behind each other)

This really shows what an amazing camera the GH2 is! Even unhacked it looks amazing (I think what I got with HBR looks the best to me, but that has more to with my work).

There's also some anamorphic stuff in there, done with my generic anamorphic on an AF100 with a Nikon AI 35mm (third shot, you'll recognize the rest)

And if you like, feel free to check in my site or like me on Facebook!
