for nostalgic reasons, I want to produce a video with my beloved original BMPCC. Therefore I want to pair the camera with a JuicedLink BMC388 preamp. However, the manufacturer doesn't exist anymore and neither do the instructional videos on youtube. There are some tweaks that need to be done in order to make the BMPCC and BMC388 work flawlessly together. Audio meter calibration, input volume...

As all the manuals and instructional videos have vanished from the internet, maybe there's someone on this forum who is familiar with the procedure and can provide me with a short instruction?

I appreciate it! Thank you.

Between the BMPCC 4K and the Zcam E2 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/22339/between-the-bmpcc-4k-and-the-zcam-e2 Mon, 29 Jul 2019 00:56:14 +0000 Duly_noted 22339@/talks/discussions Later this month I am coming into a pretty nice payday and I am debating between picking up one of these two cameras. Currently I have an Olympus Em5 Mark II I shoot with handheld. I am generally happy with the em5 II and find it easy to use. However grading the footage isn't easy and the 8 bit 1080p video isn't the greatest. I want to use the cameras as I get into doing professional video work. Run and gun, wedding, corporate events, interviews, documentary, and short films. I actually work as an actor and know several directors here in Shanghai so in the future I would possibly have the opportunity to work with them as a cameraman, focus puller, or DP. Having my own camera, lenses, and rig to bring to a low budget short film would be very beneficial to me.

The Pocket 4k and the Zcam attract me for similar reasons.

4k Video up to 60p (160 for the zcam) Much higher dynamic range than my Em5 Mark II Options for recording to an external ssd Much better lowlight capabilities than my Em5 Lots of rigging options

I plan to rig either one with a handheld rig. So cage, monitor, handle and battery and get them up to a size that would be suitable for handheld shooting and could be quickly throw onto a tripod, or be reworked into a shoulder rig. I currently use 2 of the voigtlanders and will be focusing manually for everything so their AF abilities don't matter at all.

As far as I can tell the bmpcc 4k advantages are 12 bit raw up to 40k 60p bRAW 12:1 compression is small enough to go on standard sd cards and the quality is good enough for my uses. An SD card slot. Comes with the full version of Davinci 10,050 Chinese RMB

Bmpcc 4k cons battery life is terrible and needs an external to work for any period of time strange form factor 1080p raw and 1080p prores 61-120 fps is windowed at a 3.8x crop factor

and the Zcam 4k up to 120 with no crop and 160 with a slight crop Takes sony batteries which are cheap and easy to find No fans and block shape for easy modularity Can use phone or tablet as monitor with a usb C cable Supposedly more dynamic range than the bmpcc 4k but I haven't seen this demonstrated anywhere.

Cons- 15,000 Chinese rmb video is all 10 bit and no raw available yet (I know a firmware is in the works to introduce raw) No Sd card recording option No built in screen, so any setup needs either a monitor or a phone/tablet monitor.

I'm about to make about 22,000 rmb working on a documentary next week. Combined with my normal pay It would be enough for me to buy and rig out a BMPCC 4K with a monitor, cage, and battery. But the zcam is also really tempting with its 120p 4k mode. I think the black magic files would be more flexible and easier to edit and it also comes with davinci too!

For the same price as the Zcam body only I could probably buy the Bmpcc 4k, build a handheld rig with external power and a monitor and have enough left over to pick up a gimbal (second hand at least if not new). Is that the way to go? Or is the Zcam the way most people would lean?

The BMPCC can shoot infrared http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13185/the-bmpcc-can-shoot-infrared Tue, 16 Jun 2015 13:09:47 +0000 jamming629 13185@/talks/discussions Hello everyone. I just want to share that the black magic pocket cinema camera is capable of shooting in infrared. The IR cut filter on the camera is pretty weak and I was able to shoot in broad daylight with an 89B filter attached to several lenses (Sigma 18-35mm f1.8; Panasonic 14-42mm OS kit lens wide open). You can use 360 shutter angle and shoot even at ASA 200 depending on the scenery. Please see below for a few sample shots (beginning at 3:21). I plan to do more shooting in the future, but the IR looks great when converted to BW.

BMCC / BMPCC BozBMDFilm to Rec709 LUT http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16392/bmcc-bmpcc-bozbmdfilm-to-rec709-lut Wed, 01 Feb 2017 06:01:05 +0000 Bozzie 16392@/talks/discussions [Original RAW video by John Brawley DP]

Not to be confused with a ‘Stylized Look LUT’ – I created the BozBMDFilm_to_Rec709 Utility LUT out of a need to make my own color grading life easier when dealing with the Blackmagic BMCC / BMPCC Cinema Camera Film LOG and RAW files. And now I'm making it available to you.

Download Page: https://bulentozdemirfilms.wordpress.com/downloads/bmcc-bmpcc-bozbmdfilm-to-rec709-lut/

The LUT brings out the contrast and color values captured by the BMCC / BMPCC in Film or RAW mode and strives to preserve highlight and shadow detail [more examples can be found on the download page]

Though it's not free, I think the small asking price of £3.00GBP (approx $3.80USD) is enough to take a leap of faith on. Made a difference to my work flow as I’m sure it will with yours :)

The lubricant in the helicals has turned to non-lubricating goo and the movement is very stiff and sluggish. I want to have it cleaned/overhauled and modified so that it is parfocal on the BMPCC throughout its zoom range.

Three names come to mind to bring this lens production ready: Bernie O'Doherty in New York Edward Koehler in Germany Les Bosher in Wales.

Does anyone have other recommendations for engineers who can do this work?

BMD Pocket Cinema Camera Stereoscopic Collaboration http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10902/bmd-pocket-cinema-camera-stereoscopic-collaboration Mon, 28 Jul 2014 06:34:39 +0000 _gl 10902@/talks/discussions After the success of our old Panny GH Collaboration, let's see if we can sync two BMD Pocket Cinema Camera (BMPCC) for stereoscopic 3D. I've got two on backorder (ETA 2 weeks), so I'll be able to run sync tests. If you're interested in shooting quality 3D on the Pocket or have one to try stuff on, join in!

The Pocket is only $500 USD / £390 UKP this summer (very limited availability, buy now!) .

Frame Sync is the big problem:

Syncing two cams for 3D cannot be done in post - they need to be synced at the pixel level, ie. each camera should begin each frame at exactly the same time. In other words, this is a fractional-frame problem; but you can only correct whole frames in post (not counting pixel interpolators like Twixtor which can cause unacceptable artifacts in 3D).

Pro cameras are synced with 'Genlock' - basically a connection between the two cameras that tightly synchronises frame capture. Without this, the cameras have a random gap between frame starts, anywhere up to 1/2 frame. So if you shoot 24p, the cameras will be randomly out up to 1/48th of a second, and you have no way to predict what that error will be at any given time. In 3D this is catastrophic, at least if there is any significant motion in the frame. The delay pushes moving objects forwards or backwards in 3D, and can also cause a weird shimmering effect. And forget high motion which looks awful.

Solutions:

1) hardware mod: do true genlocking by linking the cameras' capture timers or master clocks somehow at the circuit board level). This is perfect, but tricky/risky and requires skill and experience.

2) Simul-power workaround (this is what we use on the Panny GHs, and works on many others): you power-up both cameras at exactly the same time (usually with external power and a dual-switch or a custom circuit). Many cameras synchronize their frame capture from a global running clock, which is initialised at boot and never changes. So it doesn't actually matter when you trigger record - the first frame capture is always locked to that clock (ie. it waits for the next frame 'slot' before starting recording). By simul-powering the bodies, those clocks start in sync on both bodies and frames are synced.

we don't know if this works on the Pocket yet.

Downside: as no two digital clocks run at exactly the same speed, the bodies slowly drift out of sync. How fast depends on how closely matched the bodies are - people usually try to get consecutive serial nos., hoping that the eletronics components are likely from the same batch and so a close match. My badly matched (2 month apart) GH2's are good for about 4-5 mins before the drift becomes bad. Apparently some drift far less. So you have to keep power-cycling.

Problem: The Pocket only powers up when a button is pressed ('soft' power). It needs to power instantly as soon as external juice is on (one idea, permanently tape the power button down - does it work?).

3) LANC. The Pocket apparently responds to the LANC 'record' command (but not power cmds). If we're really lucky and this resets the frame capture timers (unlikely), it might be enough.

4) Firmware:

If the capture timers are NOT reset by capture start, BMD could add this to a firmware update. Then LANC-initiated record would always start in sync (subject to gradual drift) - much nicer than having to power-cycle all the time. This might be super-easy for BMD to do.

Of course some kind of true hardware sync option (maybe via the USB or LANC ports) would be best! BMD could probably do it if they wanted to - contact them if you want this: http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/support (without demand it's unlikely to happen):

Exposure / Zoom sync:

Frame sync is the most important, but it would also be much nicer if exposure (iris, ISO, shutter-speed), focus etc settings could also be synchronised, ideally in real-time (one body acts as master, one as slave). Firmware or LANC command additions could do this.

With the pocket's small size, ultra-light and compact SBS (side-by-side) 3D rigs are possible. With 'body stacking', you can even get the lenses as close as around 70mm! With Speedboosters and fast lenses you can do lowlight and shoot wide (my target), and you have 10bit ProRes and 12bit RAW. Let's make it happen!

Here's a link to where he discuses the basic design and shows examples of focal lengths with various medium format lenses:

It's basically a box with a medium format mount on the front and some ground glass and a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera inside. This is a gross oversimplification of the design, but those are the broad strokes. It also has 6 stops of internal ND. Although the camera is not capturing as many pixels as some of the higher budget large sensor offerings, I find the larger format visually pleasing.

Another link to some colored footage:

Since it's being captured with Cinema DNG format, you should be able to get the image exactly how you want it.

Camera with good DR and high framerates for slowmo? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13032/camera-with-good-dr-and-high-framerates-for-slowmo Fri, 22 May 2015 12:57:40 +0000 Psyco 13032@/talks/discussions Hi, I need a camera that can match my BMPCC shots and can capture at 100fps+. As the shots are bathing in sunlight with deep shadows under a tree, I need a camera with a high dynamic range (on the level of the BMPCC). Oh, and I don't have a Hollywood budget ;-)

1) What cameras can do both, fast fps and high DR?

2) Is there someone with such a camera in the Weilheim/Munich (Germany) area willing to help me out with his camera, lenses and technical knowledge (1-2 afternoons, arround sunset)?

I think one possible camera would be the Sony FS-700, but its expensive and even renting it is not cheap (as I have no experience with it, I will need additional time to learn its setups). Any thoughts on that one?

The GH4 can do 96fps, which is just enough (and I could use my m4/3 lenses) - but what about its DR?
