Works very well on the Blackmagic Pocket. With 800g, it's lightweight enough to be used on the camera without additional lens support. Optically, it's better than for example Canon's V6/V7 zooms.

Since the Pocket has been available, this lens is very sought-after, and there are even Ebay offers for $1000. So it wasn't easy for me to figure out its fair and realistic market value.

$50 (3G)HD-SDI to HDMI converter (quick review) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9245/50-3ghd-sdi-to-hdmi-converter-quick-review Thu, 02 Jan 2014 09:14:27 +0000 hempo22 9245@/talks/discussions Just thought I would give a quick "review" of an SDI to HDMI converter that just arrived. And by review I mean: List my equipment and say if it works or not with that combination. I couldn't find anything on this particular el cheapo one when scanning the forums so here we go!

It came without a box, just a padded envelope. The converter and the power supply was wrapped in plastic. The power had an american socket and and type f adapter (just what we use in Sweden). Input voltage is 5-12v.

According to the eBay seller I ordered from (and the manual that came with it) it said to support the following input/output resolutions:

  • 480i, 576i, 720p, 1080i @ 50/59,94/60
  • 1080p @ 23,98/24/25/29,97/30/50/59,94/60

On the BMCC 2.5K MFT + Zacuto EVF 1080i50/60 worked fine, so did 1080p25/29,97/30. 23,98 and 24p did not. I got "unsupported format" on the Zacuto display (latest firmware).

No big deal for me since I'm shooting 25p, but people who need an adapter and shoot 24p to use with their Zacutos, beware.

EDIT: 23.98 and 24p works on the converter. Hooked it up to my Samsung TV and sure enough, I get an image. Which is weird since the Zacuto manual states 1080p24. Time to contact them.

I can also add that audio passes trough and I get metering on the EVF.

For the money I'm not gonna complain and this will do till I can afford an Alphatron or whatever comes out this year that I will settle on. It's light and will stick easily on your rig with some velcro.

MagicWand wireless remote for BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera et al... http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8736/magicwand-wireless-remote-for-blackmagic-pocket-cinema-camera-et-al... Mon, 11 Nov 2013 02:22:00 +0000 DocoDocoMan 8736@/talks/discussions Hi Folks,

I knocked up a quick, rough and ready Proof of Concept demo video of my project "MagicWand" wireless remote for the BMPCC and it is now available on Vimeo:

The plan is to build an Android App with other platforms to follow if there is sufficient interest.

So far AutoFocus, FocusNear, FocusFar, AutoIris, IrisOpen, IrisClose and Record Start/Stop are function over the wireless link.

Zoom is also planned, I just need a lens to test with. Anyone got a spare of the new Panasonic 14-42mm power zoom?

I can't see why it wont work with the other BMD cameras as well, I just don't have the means to test these yet.

Regards,

Andy.

BMCC, C100, or FS100 - Camera Advice http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7869/bmcc-c100-or-fs100-camera-advice Fri, 23 Aug 2013 09:44:11 +0000 rygenova 7869@/talks/discussions I've had the Black Magic Cinema Camera (EF version) since April, coming from a hacked GH2. I kind of jumped on the BMCC fanboy bandwagon and jumped into the camera without really studying other options at the time. It's capable of some pretty great images, but overall, I just don't like the camera. It stinks for any type of handheld shooting, the crop factor is a pain to deal with, pretty much every hard drive I own is full of RAW footage even though I try to delete what I'm not using, and it takes a ton of time just to grade a shot to get it to look "normal" and sync audio from my external recorder. No built in ND's (coupled with a native ISO of 800), lack of changeable battery, and poor audio with no audio meters is annoying as well. Like I said, the image quality can be great, but it is just no fun to shoot with and there is so much not to like about the camera. Sometimes I like to just pick up my camera and shoot something, but with the BMCC, this is really impractical.

I'm not a professional, just an amateur/enthusiast obsessed with great video quality. I'm primarily looking for something that has a large sensor and can produce sharp, detailed images with minimal noise. I'd like something good for narrative with the bonus of having something I can run and gun with if I want to. I can hold my own with basic color grading, but I'm by no means highly skilled at it, so I feel I wouldn't lose too much if I no longer had RAW.

I've narrowed my options to either selling the BMCC and buying a C100 or FS100, or sucking it up and keeping the BMCC. As for price I feel they are all somewhat similar. If I keep the BMCC I need to still buy ND's, a battery solution, a better rig for handheld, a wider lens, and probably some type of storage array for all this footage I'm amassing. For the FS100 I'd need to add the Speed Booster and ND's to get it up to the C100 configuration.

For the C100, I'd probably pick up an Atomos recorder at some point in the future. For the FS100 I'd be shooting only with the Speed Booster as I have only EF glass.

From what I've read it seems like the C100 should be an easy choice over the FS100, but I feel like the FS100 looks much more cinematic (maybe it's just that I've stumbled upon videos made by FS100 users with better skills than the C100 users? Or maybe it's just because the FS100 has been out longer?). Honestly all of these very cinematic pieces shot with the FS100 are pretty much the only reason it's on my radar as otherwise I believe the C100 to be superior.

Any advice from people who have shot with either camera would be much appreciated. Is the C100 just as good or better than the FS100 when it comes to image quality?

C100 Concerns: -Possibly not as cinematic as the FS100

FS100 Concerns: -Would only be shooting with the Speed Booster (bugs/issues/etc. with this?) -It's a couple year old camera, so I'd probably be disappointed if Sony released a replacement shortly after I bought one -No ND's -Form factor not as much to my liking as the C100

Blackmagic Cinema Camera now US$1,995 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7668/blackmagic-cinema-camera-now-us1995 Fri, 02 Aug 2013 09:34:24 +0000 inviev 7668@/talks/discussions

We have worked very hard over the last year to be able to build the Blackmagic Cinema Camera at a lower cost so we can reduce the price and allow access to digital filming to a wide range of cinematographers and photographers.

We have done it and from today the Blackmagic Cinema Camera EF and MFT models will be reduced in price to US$1,995. This is very exciting and is one of the proudest moments of my life to be able to do this!

I think people will be able to use the savings to invest in some exciting lenses and rigs to really boost the creative possibilities. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is a fantastic design that's now well proven. The advantage of the 2.5K sensor is it has enough resolution to eliminate the bayer resolution loss of a HD sensor, but when shooting RAW it produces files that are too not to big to store and work with easily. It's a fantastic solution.

All orders placed that have not yet been filled, can be reduced to the new lower price."

GH2 to monitor: is there a hack to stop auto change to Interlaced when camera set to progressive? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7278/gh2-to-monitor-is-there-a-hack-to-stop-auto-change-to-interlaced-when-camera-set-to-progressive Mon, 17 Jun 2013 12:42:17 +0000 Social 7278@/talks/discussions Hi all,

I've been tinkering with my camera set up. I wanted to monitor what I was shooting on a bigger screen, and wanted to use my macbook pro retina as the monitor. I bought a blackmagic intensity shuttle, connected it via HDMI to the shuttle and the shuttle to my mac via thunderbolt.

At first I had no picture - the camera was set to 24p cinema mode at FH.... but, in order to get the camera working through Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 capture function (and the blackmagic media express software) I had to change the settings on the software to 1080i 50 - so it looks like both pieces of software think the camera is spitting out 1080i 50 rather than 1080p 24.

As a result, I have 2 questions:

1 - does using an HDMI monitor change the footage captured on the SD card in the camera from 24p 1080p to 50 1080i? If not, then that's fine, I only want to monitor the footage and can cope with a visual change showing on my Mac. If so, then.... we have an issue.... 2 - is there a hack or option in ptools that will keep it at 24 1080p if it does affect the SD card recorded footage? I'm using Flowmotion v2 at the moment.

@Vitaliy_Kiselev - can you, or any of the geniuses on here help?

Many thanks,

Rob

Will the BMPCC + Lumix 12-35 be an adequate kit? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7005/will-the-bmpcc-lumix-12-35-be-an-adequate-kit Sun, 19 May 2013 14:03:58 +0000 theconformist 7005@/talks/discussions Pros and cons? My biggest fear is the lens itself seems to produce very "video-ish" quality, but I suspect under the right conditions (controlled environment, proper lighting) it may be able to achieve a more cinematic image... The lack of cine-lens features, and in fact the inclusion of "anti" cine features like focus by wire and electronic aperture are problematic but not deal breakers... I don't really mind that the lens isn't that fast - I don't care for very shallow DOF, though low-light shooting may be an issue... I just particularly like the fact that this lens would cover pretty much all the focal lengths useful on the BMPCC. What do you guys think?

  1. No XLRs (despite audio inputs are balanced)
  2. No phantom power on audio input. Not good for condenser mikes.
  3. 30fps maximum only, many like 60fps now, and 120fps becomes new standard for pro cameras already
  4. Uncompressed only option for RAW requiring big investments
  5. SSD connectors are completely unsuitable for frequent insertion
  6. Long and complicated RAW workflow
  7. Required investments in backup solutions due to big file sizes
  8. Absent HDMI connection, so you need to buy new and much more costly monitor or EVF.

Consolidated Specs for Cinema Cameras with RAW http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5270/consolidated-specs-for-cinema-cameras-with-raw Thu, 22 Nov 2012 05:29:39 +0000 thepalalias 5270@/talks/discussions I went through the list of topics in Raw Cameras and did not see a list like this, so since I had been compiling some for the blog I posted today at http://www.pasadenapulse.net, I thought I would put them here so that others can add to it (and correct any errors that are statistically likely to have been added. :)

These cameras all have (or are slated to have soon) RAW recording capability in some form.

Max Horizontal Resolution

  • BMCC: 2.4K
  • Arri Alexa: 2.88K max horizontal resolution.
  • Sony FS-700: 4K expandable with 1.92K at release.
  • Sony F55: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2160).
  • Canon C500: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2960 RAW max).
  • Sony F65: Greater than 4K.*

  • Red Scarlet: 5K max horizontal resolution (but 4K max horizontal resolution at 24/25/30P).
  • Red Epic: 5K max horizontal resolution.
  • Red Dragon: 6K max horizontal resolution. Unreleased.

*As for the Sony F65, I don't want to get into that can of worms. With it's 20MP sensor, let's just say "easily 4K, probably more in the future" but not get too far into it other than to say that the current recording format is 4K.

Cameras with Global Shutter

  • Sony F55

Max Framerates at 4K and Highest Resolution (with the color depth recorded)

  • BMCC: Cannot do 4K. Max 30P 12-bit log at 2.5K.

  • Red Dragon: Unknown 4K (expected to meet or exceed Red Epic at all framerates but guaranteed 120P at 5K). At least 85P 16-bit at 6K. Unreleased.

Native DR

  • Sony FS-700: Untested in RAW.
  • Red One (not MX): 11.3 stops official.
  • Canon C500: 12 stops official. (Though the highlight roll-off has been garnering praise)
  • BMCC: 13 stops official.
  • Red MX (as used in MX/Scarlet/Epic): 13.5 official. (Some sources measured at under 12 but I'm not invested in one measurement over the other).
  • Arri Alexa: 14 stops official.
  • Sony F55: 14 stops official.
  • Sony F65: 14 stops official.
  • Red Dragon: Over 15 stops official. Unreleased.

And of course, the Red Scarlet, Epic (and upcoming Dragon) support the HDRx mode that some people like and others do not, which is officially specified as increasing dynamic range to 18 stops (with a lot of caveats to go along with it).
